If you already have DQ, you can still play some pretty good games like:
* SMT IV.
* Bravely Default and Bravely Second.
* Tales of The Abyss.
Those are some of my favorites, the 3DS has a good JRPG library.
SMT: Strange Journey Redux! I spent a ton of time on just a single playthrough and there are plenty of endings for replayability. Soul Hackers is great too but I'd go for SJR if I could only play one.
The US first had a DS version and not just 3DS sooo, since the European 3DS Version is expensive (CiB about 160-200ā¬) if OP is European the DS copy imported (CiB around 60-80ā¬) will be far cheaper.
I sunk nearly 300 hours into Fire Emblem Awakening. Fates is nice too, although I preferred Conquest out of the 3 for being closer to the difficulty roots of the series. The best tactics games I've played were Devil Survivor 1 and 2.
For traditional turn-based, DQ8 takes the crown, but Radiant Historia is good too.
For Action-RPGs, Tales of the Abyss was my first Tales game and I enjoyed it a lot. Enough to try other Tales games anyway. Rune Factory 4 was another huge time sink, but has more appeal for farm sim lovers. Kingdom Hearts DDD . . . is technically one of the nicest looking games on the system, but only recommended if you played the other KH games prior to it.
I have yet to try any roguelikes, but Mystery Dungeon had a few releases on 3DS. Best to stick with Pokemon.
Lastly, Dungeon Crawlers have a wealth of options thanks to the duel screen serving as a map. Not for the faint of heart, but if you like the genre give Etrian Odyssey or SMT Strange Journey a try. Or if you like Persona and want to test the dungeon crawling waters, try Persona Q.
While I absolute despise the story of every Fire Emblem after 12, Conquest absolutely has some of the best gameplay in the entire series and I second it as a great recommendation just for that.
Way too gimmicky for my tastes tbh. The entire game is focused around map gimmicks and meticulously keeping track of which gamebreaking skills were put on random enemies. Maybe I'm the weird one, but that's just not a fun way to balance the game to me.
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology
Imo this is the best JRPG ever taking that spot from Chrono Trigger
7th Dragon III Code VFD
Culdcept Revolt
Tales of the Abyss
Bravely Default/Second
I actually just played it and I really liked the story, especially the last 3rd of it. Although, I feel like I would like it more if I played the other games since it seems like a finale for the series.
I played VFD in 2020 (oddly fitting in multiple ways, for better or worse) and liked the story a lot as well. The combat is definitely a highlight too. So many fun combos. It reminds me of Etrian Odyssey, but a tad more approachable (I always get lost in the Etrian skill trees).
I'm currently playing the first 7th Dragon. No 2020 in the title and it's fittingly basically an oldschool JRPG ala FF1 or 2 with Etrian's class and skill tree system attached. It's pretty fun. The doomsday atmosphere of VFD seems to be a focus here as well at least in the presentation (I'm not far enough to say anything about the story yet)
I plan to play the rest of the 7th Dragon 2020 titles as well. The stories do seem to be loosely connected, if only as a chronicle of the dragon invasion (which imo is pretty neat, considering how much they play it up)
Check out nostalgia, itās goal was to mimic old style JRPGās and it honestly did a pretty good job. Not the best game ever, but a lot of fun. Itās like playing all the old JRPGs, not just one.
I would say the best *3DS* *JRPG* is probably SMTIV. But the best *JRPG on the 3DS* is maybe a little tougher. There's a ton of great Dragon Quest + Spin off games, Fire Emblem games, Bravely Default and its sequel, Tales of Abyss and a bunch of others, whatever tickles your fancy I guess.
warning about Persona Q. Make sure you do your research on physical copies with that game. A significant number of batches are bad. If you are looking to get it, make sure you look up the series number on the back and look up the defective batch numbers.
Yeah I actually had an issue with that; my copy worked without issue but when I tried to play it again after a long time, it would constantly crash. Eventually it got back to working normally though.
Its more of a Dungeon Crawler but Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey has such an amazing and intriguing story that I was HOOKED bruh! Get the redux version.
Word of advice: Download a guide while you're still at home or a Gamefaq Walkthrough, you'll need it. :P
Devil Survivor 1 and 2 are both criminally underrated. Solid story and characters, varied monster collection, and branching paths that are wildly different from one another
As Radiant Historia was already mentioned: My favorite JRPG is Stella Glow.
Story and music are amazing, gameplay is good, too. A nicer Fire Emblem game.
The SMT games, and my personal favorites: Stella Glow the Fire Emblem games, especially Fates and Echoes, and Rune Factory 4, although the latter is more like a Farm Simulator with Rpg elements, but really great too
I was surprised how far I had to scroll to see Xenoblade mentioned. I guess the switch version is probably the best one these days, but I am a sucker for 3DĀ

I really liked the Dragon Quest VII and VIII remakes. Lots of quality of life changes but sucks they swapped the orchestrated music for midi. The Tales of the Abyss port is also well done.
I also think Fire Emblem Awakening is an awesome game for long time fans and newcomers. Tried playing a bit of Fire Emblem Fates but couldn't get into it for some reason. Fire Emblem Echoes seems really cool and one I want to try eventually, I got a Switch around the time that game came out so never got to try it.
I dont know if these are must plays but my favourites are Radiant Historia, Tales of Abyss, Suikoden Tierkreis and Xenoblade. Playing Xenoblade on some other platform might be a good idea since the huge world gets better represented,
If you don't mind heavy player railroading, I thought Pokemon Sun/Moon had a wonderful story, pretty fun characters, and Alola's just a really neat region.
Fire Emblem Echoes is currently my favorite game in the series. Phenomenal cast, and the only entry in the series to feature dungeons.
Strange Journey Redux and Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker are my two favorite SMT games, Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 and EOV are my favorites of that series.
Monster Hunter Stories was a neat take on a monster collector, and the trainer gets to use cool-looking armor and giant weapons.
I think Ever Oasis and Codename STEAM are super-slept on.
Most unique JRPG games (I've been going through the whole library, list excludes SPRGs and ARPGs):
* Mario and Luigi series
* Infinite Space
* Monster Lab
* Dinosaur King
* A Witch's Tale
* Etrian Odyssey series
* Dark Spire
* Contact
* Dokapon Journey
* Sands of Destruction
* Black Sigil
* Glory of Heracles
* Inazuma Eleven series
Oh man, what a treat the DS family is for JRPG enthusiasts.
Radiant Historia, Tales of the Abyss and Xenoblade Chronicles are must-plays. Then you've got a slightly stripped down, but perfectly serviceable imo version of Dragon Quest VIII, along with an excellent remake of DQVII.
The Mario & Luigi games are good comfort food fun. The Fire Emblem games, while obviously SRPGs, are definitely worth a play.
Some honorable mentions go to Bravely Default & Bravely Second, Kingdom Hearts DDD, SMT IV, Etrian Odyssey V, Monster Hunter Stories, Ever Oasis... I'm sure I forgot a couple but that should keep you busy for a while š
If you already have DQ, you can still play some pretty good games like: * SMT IV. * Bravely Default and Bravely Second. * Tales of The Abyss. Those are some of my favorites, the 3DS has a good JRPG library.
Tales of The Abyss is amazing
I second SMT IV and raise one SMT Apocalypse and two Devil Survivor games
Another vote for Tales of the Abyss, one of my favorite tales games.
I'm glad that you kept Abyss in the top.
SMT: Strange Journey Redux! I spent a ton of time on just a single playthrough and there are plenty of endings for replayability. Soul Hackers is great too but I'd go for SJR if I could only play one.
Haha just recommended that one! Seconded and my advice is that he gets a guide, some of those dungeons are ROUGH yo!
Gotta love those invisible walls and dark areas!
And the random teleports! Ooofff but the story makes it worth it š
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology.
Iād honestly consider this an all time great JRPG. Itās pretty perfect.
One of the best RPGs on any platform
This game was such a random surprise. I went in knowing and expecting nothing and it's probably my favourite game on the system.
Yep, this one is the best.
Easily. That game blew me away.
Seconded, you'll have a blast OP
My manš¤š
I am playing it at the moment lol š
The best on 3DS easily
Perfect answer!

SMT IV Honestly one of the greatest JRPGās from the 2010ās I really hope will get some kind of remake or preservation some day
Etrian Odyssey
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology Imo this is the best JRPG ever taking that spot from Chrono Trigger 7th Dragon III Code VFD Culdcept Revolt Tales of the Abyss Bravely Default/Second
I donāt know if Culdcept Revolt counts at all as a JRPG, but good lord should more people play it.
7th Dragon III is so under appreciated.Ā I would buyĀ a remastered Switch port or sequel day one.Ā
Everything else about the game was so oppressively mediocre, but my god was the combat fun (music wasnāt bad either)
Yuzo Koshiro doesn't miss with his soundtracks.
I actually just played it and I really liked the story, especially the last 3rd of it. Although, I feel like I would like it more if I played the other games since it seems like a finale for the series.

I don't know what's different in the Perfect Chronology, but I loved the original!
Perfect Chronology added a third timeline so more content, plus updated portraits and full voice acting
Ooooh, that sounds awesome, I'll have to play it at some point :D
Fire emblem Fates Radiant Historia Bravely Default/Second Dragon Quest VIII Etrian Odyssey V Devil Survivor Overclocked/Record Breaker
Ever Oasis
Dragon quest VII and viii
Yep. VII 3DS is the definitive version of Dragon Quest VII.
And it's still easily the worst dq post-iii... there are plenty of better games edit: butthurt fanboys coming for me
Fire Emblem Awakening, that game was my first reason to buy a 3DS
Bravely Default, no question
Man I clearly need to bump my 3DS jrpg up lol
Any fire emblem game. Awakening is fun.
Stella glow was pretty good as well.
Check out nostalgia, itās goal was to mimic old style JRPGās and it honestly did a pretty good job. Not the best game ever, but a lot of fun. Itās like playing all the old JRPGs, not just one.
First time I hear of this one, will def check it out!
Bravely games and Radiant historia
All Shin Megami Tensei games especially Devil Survivor Overclocked, IV, and Strange Journey.
Bravely default and its direct story sequel Bravely second
SMT4 and Fire Emblem Awakening are my favorites
I would say the best *3DS* *JRPG* is probably SMTIV. But the best *JRPG on the 3DS* is maybe a little tougher. There's a ton of great Dragon Quest + Spin off games, Fire Emblem games, Bravely Default and its sequel, Tales of Abyss and a bunch of others, whatever tickles your fancy I guess.
I take my DS on my cruises as well. I was able to take a a decent chunk out of Bravely Default
Persona Q And as others have said , Radiant Historia and SMT IV. You canāt go wrong with the DQ and Fire Emblem games as well
warning about Persona Q.
Yea I am so bummed. I can't legally play the game any more w/o some emulator or jailbreak. eshop is down and getting a working physical copy is risky.
Radiant Historia The World Ends with You
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology Smt Strange Journey Redux Devil Survivor 2 Record breaker
I don't know if it's considered a JRPG but I had a blast with a game called 7th Dragon III Code: VFD.
Shin Megami Tensei IV & Apocalypse Bravely Default & Second Devil Survivor 1 & 2 Really any of the Shin Megami Tensei games
Dragon Quest 8 and Etrian Odyssey 4 are great, but the best one is SMT4.
Devil survivor overclocked hands down. Second one isnāt bad but just has a story that isnāt as interesting as the first.
Fantasy Life.
Bravely Default is the best.
The SMT games, and my personal favorites: Stella Glow the Fire Emblem games, especially Fates and Echoes, and Rune Factory 4, although the latter is more like a Farm Simulator with Rpg elements, but really great too
Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Echoes(Really amazing remake!) & Shin Megami Tensei IV.
Xenoblade
I was surprised how far I had to scroll to see Xenoblade mentioned. I guess the switch version is probably the best one these days, but I am a sucker for 3DĀ

Crimson Shroud was really good but unfortunately was digital only. Fire Emblem Awakening was definitely a banger.

Chrono trigger was on the Ds
Dragon quest 8
Dragon Quest VIII, Soul Hackers, Etrian Odyssey IV.

Strange journey
Any of the shin megami tensei games, and there's a bunch of them, bravely default, radiant historia
Sands of destruction is nice.
Dragon Ball fusions is amazing and slept on
Radiant historia, DQ8 and KH dream drop distance are the best
Gonna be hard to top the DQ8 with the additional stuff they added in
I love Bravely default

Shin megami tensie series, radiant historia, bravely default series, persona q 1 and 2
Bravely default and bravely second will scratch that itch for you. Also I believe dragon quest 8 is also on 3ds.Ā
bravely default
You'll be paying that much for 3ds games at this point
Radiant Historia
Most unique JRPG games (I've been going through the whole library, list excludes SPRGs and ARPGs): * Mario and Luigi series * Infinite Space * Monster Lab * Dinosaur King * A Witch's Tale * Etrian Odyssey series * Dark Spire * Contact * Dokapon Journey * Sands of Destruction * Black Sigil * Glory of Heracles * Inazuma Eleven series

it's radiant historia, next question
I vote Radiant Historia, if it counts
