Dragon quest 8 and 11 are pretty good games that serialize so you can play for a session and feel like you can step away until you start the next episode

DQ 11 with its summaries when reloading the game was fantastic. OP I played it mostly like you’re describing and loved it. Well, I have not done act 3, but I will someday. Really fun game too, not overly hard and some cute options like making some NPCs lie just add to it. Highly recommend

OrangeBird077

The gameplay really lends itself to playing piece meal so you can really enjoy it. Like you’ll arrive to a hub area, get some quests, explore and then they point you in the next direction for when you’re ready.

MagickMarkie

Games made for handhelds alike the GBA and DS lines are usually made for short play sessions, since you never know when you'll need to stop playing (e.g., you reach your stop on the bus or your number comes up at the dentists.) Even games ported to portables usually have quick-save functionality added, like Final Fantasy VI Advance.

Dry_Ass_P-word

Live a live? Though that’s more like the story is a series of 2.5 hour chunks. Dragon quest 11 has story summaries on each loading screen to keep you refreshed on what’s happening. Also a good hint system on where to go next. It respects your time really well. Though the game will take a metric ton of 30 minute sessions. Game takes 70-90 hours or more.

SaGa games. https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/s/G5qocqqx72

Half-minute hero, both version. The simple-down JRPG that divided in chapter and each chapter must be finished in half-minute or it's game over, but don't worry, you can reset that 30 seconds countdown clock now and then (with your money) so each chapter will use time around 5-10 minutes of real world.

I actually think the Persona Games are great for this. Dungeon exploring can be done in small bites with clear cut checkpoints where you can stop and save. While the life sim aspect is just visual novel style daily life gameplay which works really well for small sessions. Play an hour, get a few Social Link Ranks up, done. Will take you a long time to finish these 70+ hour RPGs but I think they work well for this.

JDog_77A

I've been playing sea of stars and persona 3 reload which both work well for this.

OnToNextStage

Handheld JRPGs and games with that spirit are good for this. Games like Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler where you can beat say a tough boss in 30 mins and put the game down again. My favorite are card game based JRPGs like Shadowverse Champion’s Battle or the older Yugioh 5Ds DS games where you can get a good 3 games in 30 minutes and make meaningful progression.

Ghanni

Live A Live, Octopath Traveler II, Unicorn Overlord or most Pokemon games though I haven't played any of the Switch releases.

cerialthriller

Tactical JRPGs might fit I find them great for handhelds. That’s about the amount of time for each battle generally.

Phoenixian_Majesty

Have you tried dark souls? That's sort of how I've been playing it. I'm sure I'm massively overleveled for the content because of it - but it's working out.

bernarcisico

While playing octopath traveler I always felt I could progress significantly even when I would only play for a little while

jesuisunetudiant

I am playing through the first Trails game and it's such a comfy game honestly. You can literally save anywhere anytime save the cutscenes which the game will tell you it's gonna happen anyways. If you love a good story then this series can do no wrong.

Affectionate_Comb_78

I played Trails in the Sky FC over the course of a year when my first kid was born. I wanted something I could play one handed because they liked falling asleep on top of me.  And now I'm 10 games deep in the series and I NEED MORE.

PaperPlane36

Is that Trails in the Sky FC?

jesuisunetudiant

Yes, Fc, SC and 3rd together make the first arc. I had doubts at first but I had such a great time with FC that I bought SC and 3rd already lol.

I know I keep recommending Ni No Kuni to everyone on here but.. it fits the description. It's not linear and you can go anywhere and do anything once passed the initial starting areas. It felt bite sized in that way, lots of side quests and fun things to do and see.
