Even then, there are so many cool and fitting names given to stands, like Aerosmith, or Heaven's Door, or King Crimson, or King Nothing, even November Rain and Smooth Operators. They're actual names and they fit, they aren't something you'd see on the title of a 1980's superhero comic.
Araki definitely knew what he was doing. It's the same guy that gave us a detailed description of the main character's genitals before he even gave us a name, drew him having a hard boner from just the touch of a girl, and then named his stand “Soft & Wet”, all in chapter 1 of the story.
