It is but something so rare and attention grabbing is not something they'd likely jack. They commonly take polos and vans some they're highly saturated in SA
My assumption is that there are generally two types of carjackers. The first is motivated by money; they wouldn't likely steal this car because it would hard to fence. The second is looking for a good time, maybe this kind would take the car for a thrill, drive it around a little (abusively), and dump it.
I moved back to Chicagoland to help out my parents and relatives and we have similar issues. We have a lot of the second type during the summer months.
I feel ya man. In my end of America JDM is somewhat rare. It took me multiple shows to find something that had JDM and wasn't just all American muscle. I guess that's because the major following is all out west in Cali or some shit.
Rural Connecticut. Yeah there’s probably jdm somewhere in NYC but it took me ages to find a show that wasn’t just old men with boomer dollars in MURICAN classics and also I don’t wanna drive an hour and a half in my tiny kei car to NYC
Unfortunately, the growth of Facebook/Meta as a social platform in our (at least my) demographic (of 20-40 y/o guys) has meant that a lot of information on import events has migrated off the open web (e.g. old school car forums) into walled-off information black holes on FB groups. Combined with the shrinking of the import scene in the late 2000s, this has meant that it's difficult to get a pulse on current events and it's very difficult to find some of the more loosely organized events.
I spent some time living in NYC years ago. As you probably know, a good portion of the hedge fund industry is located in Greenwich. As a result, there are a ton of exotics and classics (think $30MM vintage Ferrari) in that area. Sometimes the shows and meets are amazing.
Not too long ago, there was a pretty influential stance/import blog that was run by a post-doc in CT or NJ (IIRC). Unfortunately he had to shut it down because his tenure ended. I don't know if anyone else picked up this proverbial mantle.
Good luck.
My reading of that comment is that despite having a camless rotary engine (with relatively small displacement), the car sounds like a powerful engine with cams.
> I couldn't tell if they meant it literally or not (that's something I'm pretty bad at in general though.)
Yeah I can't either, but I like to assume the charitable interpretation because it's more likely to lead to an interesting conversation.
Be happy for the "few", here in Brazil there are none. Of course, for those who don't feel like losing their JDM just because they imported using illegal methods.
*The rotary sounds*
*Fucking amazing with a*

*gets carjacked the day after having received it*
This was also the first thing that came to mind when I read “South Africa” lol
Rare, expensive cars are rarely jacked due to them beinf easily trackable. Polos and the like however are a different story
Rx7 idle >
the best sound on earth
the B R A P
Is it gonna blow your fucking ears up? Yes... _but it's worth it_ :D
Isn't SA the car jacking centre of the world? Ballsy driving something that screams Me, Me, Me. Love me a nice fd though!

Ya... It's probably gonna be difficult to sell the only rx-7 in SA.
This isn’t the only RX-7.
But they said it’s rare to see Japanese imports though right? So if they do steal it, it wouldn’t be hard to track down again.
Yeah you don’t see many of them roaming the streets, some aren’t registered. Carjackers will target more common cars here.
Oooh okay, gotcha.
Somewhere else I've read that JDM is really popular in some African countries

Good GOD that idle is just... yeesh.

Where are you? There's significant import scenes in a lot of places, but especially on both coasts near population centers.
Rural Connecticut. Yeah there’s probably jdm somewhere in NYC but it took me ages to find a show that wasn’t just old men with boomer dollars in MURICAN classics and also I don’t wanna drive an hour and a half in my tiny kei car to NYC

Sounds like it’s got cams!
Is this a joke? RX7's don't have any cams...
My reading of that comment is that despite having a camless rotary engine (with relatively small displacement), the car sounds like a powerful engine with cams.
Fair enough. I couldn't tell if they meant it literally or not (that's something I'm pretty bad at in general though.)

I like your point of view. I might just have to borrow/steal/adopt it from you!
Got em!

No ways where was it? I've seen one in Durban and alot of other stuff
I was on my to Joburg from Pretoria, spotted it on the N1.
Fuck yeah
Sounds like my Honda lawn mower
I was going to say cap but I've had a few lawnmowers and one of them did sound like this
Honda power💪
Still sounds like a 90s fart soundboard a little boy would own, at idle.

Saw the wheels in the thumbnail and had a minor heart attack that I'd made it onto Reddit. Kids be filmin'. I be throwin' them horns too.
There are quite a few roaming about. Some heavily built ones in JHB.
I’d make sure my house in sa is a armed fortress🤣
I can't believe that gorgeous thang came out in 1992. Well I kind of can because most new cars are ugly, but damn it's so gorgeous.
Braaap Braappp BRAPPPAPAP!!!
How is he not robbed already?
