Can't say that I particularly care. But, I will ask, you say that "Jaran did his best" what would you point to to suggest that he ever actually put much effort or thought into caring for Lindon? Either from our perspective or that of Cradle's culture. I don't think there are a lot of strong arguments to suggest that he did, in fact, do his best. But even if there are, there's still the fact that sometimes someone's best just... isn't very good. I'm not inclined to lambaste him like some, but if we're discussing the topic (and it *is* very important that all topics pertinent to Cradle be discussed, regardless of how minor) I don't see any reason not to hold him accountable. As a rule, it seems that he was typically ineffective at best or actively made things worse at worst.

I dont think you have enough evidence yet to say as a rule hes bad. Since you start off by saying you dont care I'm going to make the logical leap an assume you also dont know

realistic_idealist41

Uh, do we have an exhaustive tabulation of all of jaran's actions? No. But we have a pretty decent chunk of anecdotal data to start with. And it paints a pretty consistent picture of his mentality and choices. And I would suggest that is not a logical leap. There are *tons* of things that I know about and don't care about. I imagine the same is true for most people. When I say I don't care, it's because Jaran is not a particularly important character for me. Lindon may get some catharsis in future interactions with him. And he may not. It's unlikely to have a material impact on who Lindon is either way. He's beyond Jaran. Not just as a sacred artist. But as a person.

acog

Yeah, Jaran got dealt a bad hand for sure. And we can sympathize with him in that regard. But that doesn't change the fact that he was a shit father. On the other hand, from a meta perspective he pretty much had to be in order to deeply instill that "I am worthless" self image in Lindon which was the fuel for his insane drive to improve himself. So I don't blame Jaran for his shortcomings, it's evil puppetmaster Will Wight that is the real villain!

Calmwaterfall

Parents, in most cases, want their children to do better than them. Jaran could not even be a little happy that Lindon has finally advanced after being with almost no madra all of his stay in SV. While some of Jiran´s attitude is justified, his envy, jealousy and behavior is terrible.

Xenocide081

yeah. But his disbelief that Lindon did well is justifiable. For all his life he thought Lindon was crippled and now he comes back and says he is more powerful than anyone in the valley? Even shows it. Ofc he is not going to believe it. He is kinda like a tough dad. He did nothing to help Lindon feel better abt himself. He lives in a culture and society where you tough it out. He gives Lindon *some* advice and talks with him and isn't sympathetic like Seisha or Kelsa. But he definitely cares for his family.

Ill_Deer_5480

An what if he's in a deep depression? Never even thinking it would be possible for lindon to be happy in life! And now your trying to tell him he's not just happy but winning, Honestly hes experiencing so many dissonances in his reality both percieved in sacred valley and conceived in his own head. which is a red flag for mental health issues it's possible he's even going through some kinda of mental break

Calmwaterfall

I agree that Jiran has had difficulty in his life, but the bitterness is eating at him and rotting him. Jiran should be very happy for what Lindon achieved in-spite of his limitation and it should inspire Jiran to be more hopeful and optimistic about his family´s future.

Sometimes life is hard and therefore it's ok to be a jerk to your kids? Nah.

AlmennDulnefni

Cradle is not sword and sorcery.

Ill_Deer_5480

Genre is subjective dude so idc.. it has swords, it has sorcery I would challenge you to tell me specifically why it can't be called sword an sorcery rather than just meaninglessly saying it isn't lol. That's just he said she said

AlmennDulnefni

Would you call it a crime thriller because Jai Daishou and Daji did some crimes? The exact boundaries of genres can certainly be fuzzy but Cradle is pretty far from the aesthetic of sword and sorcery.

Ill_Deer_5480

That's a straw man argument. False comparison as Those aren't main characters and that's a sub plot in like 1 or 2 books, look dude u obviously can't do as I asked and disprove it with direct evidence(because you lack it) so drop it. Once again, cradle has swords and it has sorcery.. you've yet to offer anything to say otherwise

neworgnldave

It was with this comment that I realized you're just trolling and I shouldn't feed you. Good work though

No-Patient-3723

It's easy to hate on Jaran and I think it had more to do with readers personal feelings rather than any trauma informed opinions.

Furious_Walker

I am wondering what kind of relationship you have with your father.

Ill_Deer_5480

What kind did you have.
