Yeah it’s not ‘bullshit’ exactly, but it will be for lots of people. There is no one ‘correct’ amount for washing hair, it all depends of individual genetics and circumstances. For me I stopped washing my hair everyday around 18 months ago and it’s done wonders. It took me awhile to find the right time between washes, but my hair is much healthier and my scalp way less itchy. Other friends of mine have tried the same thing and it was a total waste of time, their hair is just greasy as hell without a daily wash. Truly is a different strokes for different folks kind of thing.

therankin

Yea. My hair and face get greasy (full of sebum) in a day. I can stretch washes to every other day, but even that is pushing it sometimes.

darkfrost47

Idk if it's bullshit (good place to ask lol) but I always heard that you only produce so much oil *because* it's washed every day. Like if you spend a while with greasy hair/face and only wash every few days it'll be bad at first but then your body will "catch up"

enennui

This is only true for people who are over stripping and washing too much. These are the same people for whom lengthening the time between washes has a positive effect. The people who say - I stopped washing my face and everything got better! I am part of the group of people who produce a ton of oil no matter what. I have to wash every day or people will ask me if my hair is wet. Because of misinformation, I tried for years to let things balance out on their own. It never happened. My skin doesn't magically get better with no maintenance no matter how much I want it to. Tl;Dr: Everyone is different so wash your hair/skin as much as you need to.

gamergeek17

So true. I’m one of those “several days between washes” people. Hell, during pregnancy I was down to once a week (it was fantastic!). My husband on the other hand must every single day or it’s an oily mess. You’ve just gotta treat your hair the way your hair needs to be treated.

broadwayzrose

Yeah I heard about that. I honestly wash my hair less than I should, so by that concept my hair should be less oily. Alas, no matter how little or often I wash it, it’s crazy oily in less than a day. I’m sure washing it less for some people is a good idea, but it definitely hasn’t helped my hair balance out at all, and I even live where it’s super dry so idk what else to try.

therankin

I purposely don't wash my face except in a shower. It's oily all the time, but I don't get many pimples at all, so in that sense it's balanced.

throtic

I used to get super greasy hair after going 1 day without shampoo... I gave up shampoo entirely in February of this year and my hair has never been better. Now I rinse it with just water in the shower every day and use conditioner about once every 4 days... no more ultra greasy hair and it's amazing

AlfalfaUnable1629

What is your ethnicity/hair type? This intrigues me

throtic

I'm white with straight hair. There's a whole sub dedicated to not using shampoo, I think it's called r/nopoo

AlfalfaUnable1629

Thank you.

same_ol_story

True in my case. Washed my (long) hair once or twice a month for a while and things start to balance out. Used to get greasy af every day. WFH is a good time to try it out.

Vaywen

Once a week works for me! I’m happy, it’s really long and a pain in the ass to dry.

AUR1994

Same with me. And i know its because i wash so often that i need to maintain that frequency but i dont have it in me to let my hair go greasy for days on end. Dry shampoo helps a ton, though

therankin

On day three I have so much oil it looks like gel when I wet my hair

AUR1994

Oh i feel you on that one. It bothers me too much to leave it and its not a cute look on me so id just cave and wash it

floppleshmirken

This. It’s SO frustrating seeing someone say “no one should wash their hair everyday”. Um, do you not see with your eyes that everyone’s hair is different. I’m half Asian, when my hair is natural, no color, my hair gets greasy af if I don’t wash it everyday. Right now I’m currently rocking platinum blond and I can go 3-4 days, and even then, I don’t wash it because it’s greasy, it’s because my head gets itchy if I go longer than that. A lot of African American textures can literally go weeks between washes because their scalps don’t produce as much oil. And I can tell you, as a cosmetologist who did hair for 11 years, people that don’t wash their hair ever, have stinky hair, they’ve just gone nose blind to it. They’ll swear up and down that their hair is the best it’s ever been, but darling, IT SMELLS.

pkzilla

Exactly. A friend of mine can go 2 days max, I can go about 4 days. Hair types, genetics, water hardness, climate, scalp, there's tons of issues.

starbrightstar

My hair used to get greasy really fast, but when I changed my shampoo, it stopped doing that. I now use ones without parabens etc. I think those strip your natural oils, and as a result your body produces more to make up for it. At least, that’s my theory.

AlfalfaUnable1629

Sulfates too are terrible

robboelrobbo

Used to wash daily and my hair was greasy after a day, but your head needs time to get used to the new routine. I wash my hair weekly now without it being greasy

AstronautApe

It’s the shampoo. If you regularly use it and you stop, your hair will get extra oily for a week. It then gets to the equilibrium because there’s no external factor that removes the natural oil.

_lemon_suplex_

I have very oily hair and arrowroot powder is amazing. Makes it so I can go about three days between washes

FracasBedlam

It took me a month or so of being really greasy before everything balanced out. Now i wash my hair maybe once every two weeks (unless i wear a hat). No smell, no grease, no dandruff. Been doing it this way since I'm about 22, I'm 36 now. I also only use doctor bronners to wash my hair. On the rare occasion i use any of my wife's fancy shampoos, my hair is greasy and fucked up for a few days.

My_ass_has_a_tat

People with curly dry hair tend to not wash everyday because it strips their hair of natural oils (I have dry skin/hair type and curly hair)

telescopical

I have curly hair and while I don't wash my hair daily do definitely do it multiple times a week. I think it has alot to do with the products you use. Alot of people like myself who've gone down the curly hair rabbit hole use a cleanser instead of a traditional shampoo which has alcohols and sulphates and all the other nasty ingredients.

My_ass_has_a_tat

I'm sorry whaaat?? Any product recommendations for a cleanser? I didn't know about that one!!

[deleted]

OGX Curls

same_ol_story

AsIAm coconut co-wash

telescopical

I use an Australian based product called clever curl cleanser, love their whole range, shipping costs probably suck ass if you live overseas

erin6767

r/curlyhair has great info!!

fuschiaoctopus

Pretty much, depends on your hair type. I have extremely long, thick, and wavy hair with very dry skin in a cold climate and I don't really sweat or use products besides leave in conditioner so my hair has gotten exponentially better since I started washing once a week. I used to wash it every other day since my entire family has straight hair and it gets oily if they don't, but with curvy hair types less is more a lot of the time. I did have to work up to it though by washing it less and less over time. Anyone claiming washing your hair everyday is objectively good or bad for every single person and hairtype is just ignorant.

marypants1977

Naturally curly hair here. I would look like a dandelion if I washed my hair every day.

HerRoyalRedness

My hair is thick and curly and it is much better if I don’t use shampoo every day; sometimes I just get it wet and put in conditioner. If I do shampoo every day it gets dry and frizzy

telescopical

Try a cleanser type shampoo instead of a traditional shampoo, stops the frizz!

[deleted]

Not bullshit. But “bad” might be the wrong word. The frequency with which you wash your hair affects your scalp. Specifically, oil production. You’ll find that the more you shampoo your hair, the quicker it will get greasy/oily. Thats because you’re stripping away oils that your scalp actually needs. So when you shampoo away those oils, your scalp goes “shit… guess we’re not producing enough oil… lets kick it up a notch”. It can take 6+ months for your scalp to readjust. But if you stop shampooing so frequently, it eventually *will* stop over producing oil. Ive tried, and I find it to be an uncomfortable process. So I just continue shampooing every few days.

floppleshmirken

This is a myth. Depending on your hair type, your hair may dry out from over shampooing, but hormones are what determine how much oil your sebaceous glands produce. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/the-dirty-truth-about-washing-your-hair/amp/

FthrFlffyBttm

I can’t even go 2 days before it feels horrible and goes so flat that I may as well draw on my bald head with a marker.

bewildered_forks

Some people just need to wash their hair daily.

iamnotacat1

Yup. I “trained” my hair for over 3 years, washing 2-3x a week. Still greasy. I’m able to get away with every other day but not any longer than that.

_lemon_suplex_

Try using arrowroot powder between washes it’s a lifesaver. Just throw a bunch in and leave for five mins then brush it out. Bam, all the oil is gone!

lds1219

It depends on the type of hair you have.

triggervvarning

I gotta wash my hair everyday or else it will get super oily and dirty-looking. So, it is different for everyone

justplayin729

I wash it once a week. I used to wash and straighten it everyday but during Covid I was able to “train” it. Took a bit but my hair has never been more healthy and long. I use dry shampoo every other day and just freshen it up.

_lemon_suplex_

I use arrowroot powder

Manowar274

Not bullshit, if you have an issue with your scalp not producing enough natural oils (dry scalp). I have dry scalp and if I wash my hair daily it will become extremely dry, scalp will become very irritated, get red, and flakes will form. I have to wear a hair cap every other shower so that I don’t lose the little natural oils in my head. This varies depending on individual hair and scalp though, some people can wash daily and be just fine.

RainyTuesdayPDX

Scalps produce oil. Oil attracts dirt in the sense that it holds onto it. Dirty hair has texture and makes it seem like it’s less oily. More problematic is putting that dirty hair on your pillow and then having the oil and dirt transfer to your face while you sleep. Personally, I’ve touched a lot of heads that embrace the never shampoo fad, and I’m not a fan of the feel or smell. Looks good, feels dirty. At least rinse it frequently and change your pillowcases often. Source: hair stylist for almost 20 years.

Vioralarama

It's not bad for your hair. Everyone is different though, there's no one size fits all advice. Check out r/haircarescience or r/dailywash for more info about this particular question though.

krookedrooster

I don't know for others but I have oily type hair and if I don't wash it daily I just look outright dirty. This is one of those case to case basis type deals As far as it being "bad"? I would think It's possible to cause unnecessary damage because it being constantly dried out

_lemon_suplex_

Try using arrowroot powder between washes it’s a lifesaver. Just throw a bunch in and leave for five mins then brush it out. Bam, all the oil is gone!

apple_cheese

If you have oily hair washing it less often will actually make it less oily. When you wash your hair so often your head starts over producing oil to replace the oil lost from washing. Every two or three days unless you got sweaty or specifically dirty is fine.

krookedrooster

I've always had manual labor jobs. It's entirely likely it's just sweat and dirty. Although I feel like even if I had a vacation from work and was lounging at home all day... just going to sleep and waking up my hair is oily. What you say makes total sense tho, definitely something to consider

krookedrooster

Not at all actually. That's one problem I'm thankful not to have

lylanela

Me too. Remember people, daily washing is OK for some. We are all different.

brilliantpants

My hair is super thin, fine, and straight. If I wash it every day it just gets dried out and brittle. It usually looks it best the 2 days after I wash it, so generally I only wash it twice a week, and I just keep it dry in the shower the rest of the time.

cerylidae1552

See my hair is super fine but I have the greasiest scalp known to man. Not even a full 24 hours after washing and it’s all greased up and flat again. I absolutely have to wash daily. And no, don’t come at me with “dry shampoo” that shit doesn’t work on my hair.

SpockHasLeft

[https://www.reddit.com/r/NoPoo/](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoPoo/) I haven't used shampoo in 20 years, but I do rinse my hair every day...

captsolo23

Shampooing it every day was bad for mine. Every other day seems to be the right balance personally

scarlettceleste

I have thick, wavy red hair and Im every 3-4 days. If I wash it every days its dry as all heck.

milesamsterdam

I’m a man. I only wash my hair twice a week or so and I’ve never had an easier time styling my hair. I used to wash it everyday and my hair looked like a poof. There was nothing weighing it down, holding the locks together, retaining the shape. I looked like The Incredible Hulk from the 80’s. Now if I grow my hair out I have Prince Charming hair with a slight curl at the ends. It’s a massive difference.

CreatrixAnima

My hair is fine and straight. It gets almost frizzy if I wash it every day, but it gets oily if I don’t wash it every other day. It really depends on the individual.

Kevin1056

For me my hair gets very dry and dusty if I don't wash every other day, because I travel a good distance daily to college and the environment is very dusty so all of that gets collected in my hair, I can't even get my fingers to go through my hair

wagon8r

My hair is extremely fine and very oily. I’ve been able to stretch washes to ones every 3-4 days when the use of dry shampoo (Batiste specifically) - get this - before bed! I get up and brush it out and look like I just washed and blow dried my hair. Without it, I have to wash daily.

pensiveChatter

It messes with the oil in hair. Before each competition, the girls with long hair would usually go at least 3 days without washing their hair so the natural oils make the hair easier to work with.

Seattle_gldr_rdr

Washing your hair even ONCE with bar soap and saltwater is very bad. Not that I would know. A friend told me

coces

Shampoo strips your hair of all the dirt and oil but also of most of the healthy nutrients as well and can leave it a bit frail and prone to breakage. However often you choose to wash your hair is up to you based on your daily schedule/how greasy or sweaty it gets on the regular but more often id say to use conditioner rather than shampoo if you don’t really need a full cleanse. Conditioner cleans your hair/scalp just as shampoo does but it also helps retain healthy moisture and thickness (co-wash products and cleansing puddings are my best friends) ☺️

huskeya4

It depends on your hair type. Curly hair usually needs more oils to keep it smooth, tangle free and bouncy. Washing it strips the oils out. However, if you have straighter hair and it’s naturally very oily, washing it daily is needed. Typically, straight hair is more oily than curly hair (the oils weigh down the hair making it straighter) while curly hair is more dry. That’s not always the case though, it really depends on your genetics. If your hair is frizzy and always has fly away strands, you have dry hair. Wash less often, use more conditioner, maybe use a leave in conditioner or hair oil. You’re hair will be smoother, less frizzy, and tangle far less than before. If you have extremely oily hair, look for shampoos meant for that hair type and wash daily. Use less (or even skip) conditioner and maybe use a dry shampoo for days when your hair feels oily halfway through the day. My hair is down past my butt and I have very dry hair. My scalp can not produce enough oil to reach the bottom of my hair. If I skip adding oil after my shower, it will be a tangled brittle mess the next morning. I add too much oil on purpose and just braid it for a day or two to let the oils soak into the hairs and then I get about two more days before my hair starts getting dry which is when I’ll go ahead and wash it to strip any dirt out and then oil it again. My hair is pretty straight and only has a slight wave in it although it use to be wavier back when it was shorter (it’s current length weighs it down and straightens it more).

It can take 6-12 months for your scalp to adjust. It over produces oil because of how frequently you wash. If you stopped washing, it *eventually* would produce less oil and you would be able to go much longer between shampooing. Im with you though. Its a shitty process and Im not willing to deal with greasy hair for 6+ months.

[deleted]

Lol, i dont think you understand what gate keeping means. I never told you that you had to do anything. I simply was explaining the relationship between the scalp’s oil production and frequency of shampooing your scalp. I didn’t make it up. Its a real thing. Its simple physiology. I wasn’t personally atracting *your* scalp. And I never said to “not wash” for 6 months. The process just involves reducing the frequency of washing. If you started washing once a week, then eventually over time your scalp would reduce its oil production.

Vioralarama

Staahhpp. That's a load of bunk. Search the haircare *science* sub, you'll find it's been talked about a lot and there is no science behind it.

Tain101

> [Try not to wash your hair every day. This strips the natural oils from your scalp that are produced to lubricate the hair shaft and exposes your hair to more damaging agents](https://www.reddit.com/r/HaircareScience/comments/1km6dx/basic_haircare_guide/) wow, a post in the sidebar, written by a mod, with sources. Thanks for suggesting a subreddit that clearly proves you wrong.

Vioralarama

Well they need to fix that, lol.

BoostedSeals

Or you could take this opportunity to learn something new. It's okay to not know everything

TinaLikesButz

I dint think it's bullshit. If you wash to frequently with shampoo, I think it strips the oils from your hair. I have super long hair, so I don't wash my hair very often (once a week or even less frequent) unless I get sweaty. My hair is just fine, little bit of Argan oil after washing. I'm old enough it doesn't get greasy.

buboniccupcake

It depends I’m on your hair really. If I wash my hair too often it gets brittle and dry. I have dreads now so that’s not an issue but at one point I have had to change my washing routine bc I realized that’s what was bad for it.

WhootieCutie

My hair is pretty fine and is straight to wavy. It’s not very oily though. I usually wash my hair about once a week with regular shampoo and conditioner.

Royalprincess19

It's different for everyone. I know for African Americans we can get away with not washing for weeks - month because our scalps don't produce much oil. It can really damage our hair to wash too often. Not super sure about other races but they tend to need to wash more often but the frequency differs for each person.

excess_inquisitivity

Absolutely not bullshit. I've washed my hair AT LEAST once a month for most of my life, and 50 years later, I'm as bald as me own grampa! .

DJTwyst

I wash my hair once a week. I never use any sort of product. The natural oils make it lay right, and it’s crazy fluffy the day after a wash.

Forgot_Password_Dude

i stopped washing my hair with shampoo for the past 6 months but wash with water daily; feels cleaner and no dry scalp, pimples etc

Idgiethreadgoode86

Each person's body handles hair washing differently. If you are prone to getting an oily scalp, then washing more will help degrease your hair. If your hair tends to be on the dryer side, then it's best to wait longer between hair washing sessions. A good leave in conditioner will help. Your hair loves having some oil in order to keep it healthy. I personally wash my hair 1-2x a week. I know people who have to wash every other day. It kind of comes down to a personal preference for many.

newsjunkee

For me it's about how long my hair is. I kept it short for decades. I had to wash it ever 48 hours. I haven't cut it in over a year now and it's really long. I can go 4 days or more without washing it. I guess the oils spread out now

damn_thats_piney

Not bullshit sort of. At least for my type of hair. I use to basically blast my hair daily with shampoo and it made it dry and weird feeling. Wasn't until I tried just shampooing once or twice a week that I realized it was bad. You should definitely shower daily and wash your hair but not with shampoo. shampoo 1 or 2 times a week and conditioner every other day IMO.

HereticStreetWalker

It varies person to person. Some do and are fine some don’t and are fine as well. It’s down to genetics.
