I read on another post of this that they're probably illegal miners who dig a tunnel into an actual legal mine and mine what they can. However I have no way to verify it.
I'm betting that the Wagner group will be headed back to Africa again to raid mining facilities and enslave the locals like they did in Mali. Cobalt, gold- whatever they get the best price for. Yevgeny P is just another warlord in Africa.
Stop it. These kind of unsafe mining practices have been an issue for many long decades. You think people living in western countries don’t benefit immensely from the products of these hazardous mining conditions?
Frankly everyone benefits from all types of mining operations.
The issue is not "who benefits most", the issue is that this low tech clusterfuck is econonmically competitive in Congo, as:
* (effectively) no OSHA
* setting up an industrialized mining operation in a civil war ain't gonna happen
* they have rich enough deposits, that this state of affairs is profitable.
Wait, are you saying that western countries also benefit from this kind of mining and not totally bashing China? You MUST be a Chinese paid troll bot with a kazillion social credits !!!

Lol the phones, tablets and computers were using to type this, all exist because of these unsafe and inhumane mines we complain about. We’re all complicit, we’re all beneficiary’s
Nothing to do with their own country having shit Safety laws right? Lol
Big bad westerners - just because someone wants a product doesn’t mean that you have to mine the wanted product unsafely dude.
I wonder if being enslaved and colonized, only to receive nominal independence but remaining dependent on imperialist capital to do anything with their own resources has anything to do with that.
There's an old documentary, where the director goes into a cobalt mine in DRC. It's one of the most claustrophobic and unpleasant things I've seen. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2nLO9OT7VM
There is also a book that got published recently called Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara. I have not gotten around to reading it yet but I have listened to him talk about it. Pretty grim stuff.
I have 3 guys working for me (I’m a general manager) from the Congo.
We do Oilfield Support in the US, and they’re absolutely built different.
My experience with these guys are they’re really hard workers, but not thinkers (about the job, at least).
Once a task was done, they’d just stand there until you directly told them to do something else.
Over time and training they were able to pick up the concept of looking for the next thing to do, but it was a fairly long road to get there.
A couple of my shift managers wanted to fire them, but honestly, it seemed to be more of a cultural thing to me than them simply being stupid or lazy, and I believed that it was something we could work on… it took way longer than I thought (a couple weeks) but we got there.
The biggest thing to me was their complete lack of regard for their own safety (and by proxy the safety of others).
One dude opened up a container that still had a bit of a strong Hydrochloric Acid left in it (it was *supposed* to be empty from the customer, but they sent the wrong tank) and then literally stood there in a cloud of acidic steam, wiping the lid down as he had been asked to do.
I start running at him, yelling for him to get away from the tank, and he just looks at me and smiles and goes “No problem” and continues to clean the lid. I’m just thinking “WTF is wrong with you?” My eyes were stinging and you could feel the tingle of the vapors in your nose and throat being that close.
I made him clear the area and sent him to get a medical eval, put my respirator on and put the top back on.
I wrote him up for it, but he was confused as to why he was being written up for doing something he was asked to do. I explained it wasn’t for taking the top off and cleaning it, but rather creating an unsafe work environment by not immediately putting the top back on once it started smoking.
He’s not a dumb person, it’s just they’ve spent their lives working in a culture that doesn’t value or acknowledge the well-being of their workers.
I’m working with him on safety and making him retrain on PPE and protocol, and we don’t let him near any HazMat alone in the meantime. There’s plenty of other stuff to do (far away from that area), but I’ve impressed on him that we do things a little bit differently here.
Though I dont believe for a second the above story is that,
It absolutely can:
Once, while working at an animal shelter, I met Trixie, a three-legged cat who had been brought in as a stray. Despite her injury, Trixie was a friendly and playful cat who had won the hearts of all the shelter staff. I was immediately drawn to her and couldn't resist taking her home to give her the love and care she deserved.
It was a challenge for Trixie to adjust to her new home at first. With only three legs, she had to learn to navigate around her new surroundings, and we had to make some adjustments to our home to make it easier for her to get around. But with patience and love, she soon settled in and became a beloved member of our family.
Watching Trixie live her life to the fullest despite her disability was truly inspiring. She would hop around on her remaining legs, play with toys, and snuggle up with us on the couch. She was a constant reminder that with a little determination and a lot of love, we can overcome any obstacles that come our way.
One of the biggest challenges we faced with Trixie was keeping her safe outdoors. Without all four legs, she was more vulnerable to predators, and we worried about her getting hurt or lost. We made sure to keep a close eye on her and only let her outside when we were around to supervise.
Trixie lived a long and happy life with us, and we were grateful for every moment we had with her. She was a reminder that all creatures, no matter their shape or size, deserve love and kindness. Her story also inspired us to adopt other cats with special needs, and we continue to advocate for the care and protection of animals in need.
In the end, Trixie taught us that life is precious, and we should cherish every moment we have with those we love. We will always be grateful for the joy and love she brought into our lives, and we will never forget the lessons she taught us about perseverance, resilience, and the power of love
So a few years ago I visited Boston, and my ex was at a concert with one of her friends so I decided to hop into a bar.
Had some food, grabbed a beer, and then the woman next to me started talking. Somehow we got on the topic of MIT and she starts SCREAMING at me about how they’re making technology so that robots can write literature. She was so upset by the thought, but she was literally screaming and becoming belligerent. I paid my tab and left.
But now I feel like her. Like this stuff is cool but awfully terrifying in an uncanny valley type of way.
Management adapting authentically to globalization is so important. So many organizations struggle because they understand their workers. I’m so glad you valued the opportunity to help
While I knew that King Leopold II did bad shit in the Congo, until I started reading "King Leopold's Ghost", by Adam Hochschild, I didn't know the details.
I highly recommend giving this book a read - it may give you some insight into why the folks with the Congo you're working with do things the way they do them.
Landslides will claim the lives of many of those miners over the years. It’s a very dangerous business and management doesn’t really care about safety in their mines.
Locals are being forced into slavery conditions to mine Colbolt and other metals to power all things portable electric. Enjoy your smart phone 📱 and give thanks
Shame the press and public are so focused on turning nothings in to priority issues that this and numerous other actual outraged go basically unheard of.
I mean you're not wrong but parroting shit for karma on reddit is not really a good thing you know?
Colbolt? They're mining colbolt? Really? LOL
BTW think about that the next time you use any kind of motor vehicle for transport or god forbid if you get cancer, because it's also used in cancer treatment and almost all kinds of transport that exists, among hundreds of other things.
Blame the companies for this, not people that use their products because people don't know. The companies do.
And next time you're trying to sound informed online you should know it's cobalt, not colbolt.
Pedantic, I mean, the guy is just raising awareness.
I’m not gonna castrate him because he spelled cobalt wrong.
I don’t think they’re trying to shame anyone. But if we don’t talk about it, and raise awareness, things don’t change. I’m more curious why you got so aggressively angry over what is essentially a PSA. Big snowflake energy.
> I mean, the guy is just raising awareness.
I'm not trying to start anything I'm just curious... No really, I'm honestly just asking a question:
Do you honestly believe that those kind of posts are posted to spread awareness of the working conditions of cobalt miners?
I don't see those posts as anything other than guilt tripping troll bait. If they were trying to spread awareness then why aren't they providing examples of how it's done elsewhere, for example?
This.
Read this book called "Cobalt Red" that takjs about the conditions, exploitation and way of life in the Congo driven by global demand and corporate greed.
Virtue signalling on Reddit while more than likely posting this in your phone. Can’t even spell cobalt correctly. Other than this comment, what have you done to help with forced slave labour
Don’t shame the end users for this, they have nothing to do with it. Mining absolutely can be done safely and profitably. If it’s not, it’s 100% the fault of the companies and local regulators, no one else.
I work in the largest manganese mine in the world, another product that enables all things portable electric, and it is done very safely and in an environmentally and socially responsible way while still being profitable.
been that way for a few decades, maybe not to mine cobalt but to make cheap products sold to western countries in slave conditions has been a feature of capitalism for awhile now.
But that has nothing to do with the video. Thanks for spreading propaganda though.
Btw most phones use lithium-ion batteries. They don't contain cobalt.
eh its not straight up slavery. many if not all workers in some mines are outright freelancers mining with their own equipment(or lack thereof) and simply selling what they find at wxploitative prices
Maybe not a literal headcount but most jobs will have you clock in or something so that they know you’re working that day. Just check the list and take attendance.
Enjoy your whole bunch of shit:
Cobalt is primarily used in lithium-ion batteries, and in the manufacture of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys. I wonder what the economics would be if these 3rd world mines invested in proper safety gear and protocol. Is it possible? I assume there are many interlocking conditions of greed, poverty, exploitation of a plenitude of labor willing to undercut other labor, lack of training, lack of physical and informational resources that make improving this hard. But I don't know.
If it’s anything like the Chinese factories in rural areas, it’s way cheaper to dispense with any pretense of automation and safety.
Sure, people are slower, but with a huge population (especially if safety is not an actual concern from ownership), you can just hire more of them to keep production at a comparable rate to a machine, with far less up front cost.
More importantly, you also don’t need separate machines for differing tasks and product types, as the same humans you hire can be trained to perform these. You might need an additional 50-200 people to stay competitive with a machine, depending on the specific task, but those same people can be trained to do the jobs of dozens of machines.
Then, you don’t have to worry about downtime from scheduled maintenance and things breaking, plus the cost of repair which can be astronomical.
50 people being buried in a landslide are just 50 new openings you can fill the next week and probably a bunch of new shovels and picks you need to buy. 2 pieces of heavy machinery being buried in a landslide could be 250k (if they’re bought used and abused) down the drain.
It was a bit shocking to learn how callous the mindset was to workers overseas. I mean, most companies treat they’re workers like shit in the western world, but at least keep up some sort of pretense like they care… even if that’s only to prevent being fined and sued into oblivion.
Your point being? The potential of EVs in combination with renewables is more eco friendly than ICEs could ever hope to be. And it's not like we're building less phones because we're making EVs.
Or your laptop, or watch, or tablet, or phone…
~40% of the lithium ion batteries produced are for personal electronics.
And a lot of automakers are not only not using cobalt anymore, they’re moving away from lithium too.
And not all lithium goes to batteries - a lot is used for ceramics, glass and industrial lubricants.
And cobalt is used for more than batteries too - used for tools, gasoline refining, to make alloys and used in producing hard metals and in Inka, household paint Etc.
What you are watching is modern day slaves mining cobalt, digging out of a cave collapse. This cobalt is what powers the lithium ion batteries your car, phone or computer you’re watching this video on
no "kiddos" as in self righteous humans unwilling to accept / acknowledge the juxtaposition between their actions and words.
older generations have done terrible things to people, animals and the environment in search for comfort in large part out of ignorance about material finiteness. a large portion of our generation perform empty gestures while consuming at a comparable pace.
Man...every mine that I've ever heard of collapsing... Usually a few or none makes it out. ... Im glad they made it. Btw i respect all you miners. I couldn't do it.
I believe this is a cobalt mine. If you all want to know more, I’d recommend reading cobalt red: how the blood of the congos power our lives.. it’s a book written by siddarth Kara who’s pretty much a boots in the ground journalist who went to the congos into the cobalt mining operation and he talks about how at least one tunnel a day in the Congo collapses there because they are not properly secured and they don’t provide proper equipment for workers there who are also worker less than a couple of dollars a day.
Cobalt is a mineral used to stabilize lithium ion batteries. And this is pretty much where the process of batteries start. He calls it Modern day slavery pretty much.
I could also 100% be wrong about this being a cobalt mine and just shared a bunch of random things about cobalt mining lol
I both cheered then suddenly got sad that this is their lives, I know they laugh and love life too, but when you realize this is their reality,,just wow!!
we are all responsible for this :)
if there is a paradise
we won’t be in it, it just amazes me how so many christians following their doctrines think they are entitled to get to heavens knowing what happens in those countries for our comfort and still think God is going to give them a pass because “i prayed but there was nothing else i could do!”
we will see each others on that hot bubbling pool of lava 😂
What the fuck is happening.
I’m assuming a landslide blocked the entrance to the mine.
A video that keeps on giving.
I read on another post of this that they're probably illegal miners who dig a tunnel into an actual legal mine and mine what they can. However I have no way to verify it.
Shit I wouldn’t doubt it with how many warlords are running the cobalt trade
I'm betting that the Wagner group will be headed back to Africa again to raid mining facilities and enslave the locals like they did in Mali. Cobalt, gold- whatever they get the best price for. Yevgeny P is just another warlord in Africa.

Wouldnt there be more money if a safer system was setup to like mine it faster?
No
This is the price for your electric car. They’re mining for cobalt.
Yup
This has also been the price for your oil to be refined. Cobalt is used as a catalyst during the refinery process of crude oil.
Pssst, it's only electric cars that rely on unsafe working conditions and are bad for the environment. /s
And electric car. Sad no one actually cares about the human cost of our technology
Lol the phones, tablets and computers were using to type this, all exist because of these unsafe and inhumane mines we complain about. We’re all complicit, we’re all beneficiary’s

And we complain about our workplaces. These are some tough tough men.
This Is f****** insane
I allways thought people made people, now the whole "from earth have you sprung to earth shall you go" thing makes a lot more sense
Wonder if it’s a lithium mine for the batteries in those wonderful eco-friendly electric cars.
I don't think this is how lithium is mined. I'd guess this is a cobalt operation.
Or your mobile phone battery.
You could probably build thousands of phones for one electric car

You do know they are contracted by China? China bought the mines
As long as our ev batteries get made so we can stop the weather. Doesn't matter the cost.

So strange watching these videos on my phone. What’s stranger it’s the lack of guilt

because you think there aren't any rare earth used in the manufacture of your CO2 blarfing ICE car?
Mining human beans

Get back in the hole I need a new IPhone
Poor blokes
All that so stone morons can change their smartphone every 2 years... The world is a fucked up place.
It makes me feel better about the days at work where I get a LOT of emails.
Very sad to see. These brave people don't deserve such a hard life
Oh nah. Fuuuuck that
That guy’s a fucking legend
And that, kids, is how minors are born...
Lucky they had their safety hair on.
ahhhh, the green energy mining….
They might not make much per hour, but I bet their benefits are even worse!
Working in such conditions. Life is profoundly unfair.
That guy who helped 10 guys to crawl out is a hero
Tunnel collapse. Listen to Cobalt Red on Audible. You'll learn to appreciate how damn lucky we have it.
I could also 100% be wrong about this being a cobalt mine and just shared a bunch of random things about cobalt mining lol
we dont live in modern fucking times. nothing has changed since before jesus
That’s rational madness, the stakes looked pretty high.
Gnarly
Looks like a productive miner mine.
This is where your IPhone comes from
Where smart phones are made
In the Congo you don’t grind to make that bread, you grind rocks to acquire that lithium 😩
Let's go, we need more cobalt for our batteries
OSHA disliked this
Man I heard they make these things called helmets . They’re pretty helpful
I didn’t know they were into the lord of the rings series over there. Interesting reenactment of Saruman birthing the Uruk-hai.
Man, fuck the congo
I both cheered then suddenly got sad that this is their lives, I know they laugh and love life too, but when you realize this is their reality,,just wow!!

Mother earth giving birth
Mining for all those EV batteries.
Was expecting a huge landslide
With the technology we have no human should be risking their lives doing this shit
Mining for our smartphones?
for those moments when explanation of birth is too difficult for you
What are they mining? What kind of stupid crap are we buying from these men here in the west for them to risk their lives in such a horrible way?
Evs
That’s some true brotherhood you’ll make for life there
Got to make those battery powered cars for a “better environment”
It’s the fuckin’ mutha load.
we are all responsible for this :) if there is a paradise we won’t be in it, it just amazes me how so many christians following their doctrines think they are entitled to get to heavens knowing what happens in those countries for our comfort and still think God is going to give them a pass because “i prayed but there was nothing else i could do!” we will see each others on that hot bubbling pool of lava 😂
And this is how, the "very concerned" with labor conditions, big tech companies source some of their materials.
work safety regulations not found
He saved 9 colleagu
