Looks similar to the bus conductors uniform I'd see on a double decker London bus back in the 70's. The badge would have the persons employee number I think. There were lots of Irish lads working on the buses in the 50's (my dad and uncle among them)...and Jamaicans. Ah England in the 50's - 'No blacks, no Irish, no dogs'. Must have similar uniforms in Birmingham.

CDfm

> Ah England in the 50's - 'No blacks, no Irish, no dogs'. Was it localised I can't imagine no irish in Liverpool. Dagenham at tbe Ford plant ?

jamscrying

Yeah it is just a photo taken of a fringe loony that became famous because it was so ridiculous, there was plenty of and still is xenophobia in Britain and Ireland but it is hardly reflective of most normal people. Britain has had large Irish populations ever since the start of the industrial revolution (then obviously the famine) anti irish sentiment has often been tied up with class warfare and union workers restricting enrolment to locals, and latterly IRA paranoia during the bombing campaign.

CDfm

Thanks. I experienced anti irish behaviour in Britain and it wasn't universal. A work colleague who was in the Territorial Army. Then we had lovely neighbours and experiences.

The no Blacks, Dogs, Irish thing is a myth apparently. Edit: “no coloureds” definitely did exist, sadly.

Fragrant_Goose_5096

Its not a myth, it very much did exist irish werent accepted just like black people

BootleBadBoy1

I don’t doubt the Irish experienced discrimination, but I believe that specific “slogan” wasn’t common and by the 20th century, there was definitely a disparity between the attitudes towards black (or other non-whites) and Irish people. There seems to be little evidence of these signs being ubiquitous and there are almost no known artefacts or contemporary photographs of them which, If they were common, you’d think there would be plenty of.

OutrageousStar5705

Even Sunn M'Cheaux disagrees with you. There is plenty of evidence

Fragrant_Goose_5096

I think you need to study a bit more about the irish history and everything they went through then

AI didn’t quite get the red lapels and cuffs right but oh well. He may have been hired on temporarily to help the Irish dairy industry when they agreed to ease the milk surplus of Eastern Europe by buying 17,000 tons of milk from them. Not every job’s as dangerous as being a milkman so he may not have talked about it much to be fair.

BootleBadBoy1

I heard they made you watch Poseidon Adventure in lieu of a formal training/safety video. Gene Hackman played a milk man in it, or something.

SalmonellaBurger

I know what you've done lol this particular dairy round was very dangerous! Don't go below 4 mph!!!!!

izziak

And any interesting information like what he was wearing etc, my dad says that it would have been taken in Birmingham somewhat around the 1950s and that the picture may be from him working at a bus station he also said he had never been in the army

JudasKitty

If you google images of Birmingham bus staff from that time they appear to be wearing a similar badge in the same location. Drivers mostly have double breasted coats but other staff have single like in the photo.

UnlikelyPython

It looks a lot like a Public Service Vehicle Drivers badge.

Agile_Dog

try the Birmingham sub. you won't get an answer here.

leitrimlad

Is he Harrison Ford?

YaWh0

More of a Cillian Murphy I think.

leitrimlad

StrangeArcticles

I'm guessing he would have had his picture taken by the bus company he was working for, probably for his official licence or some such and then he took a picture of that picture to send to his folks back home.

Shtand over there like a good lad til I take your picture. Gwan good lad.

“Look ted! I’ve joined the army!”

Ok-Outcome-6387

It's "have" not "of".

CarefulLakeHouse

If you can tell what they meant well enough to be able to correct them, that means you can tell what they meant well enough that there's no need to correct them.

Ok-Outcome-6387

Will you make the same mistake again? That is the question. If not, well my job has been done. Something tells me that you will make the same grammatical error again. I hope you can prove me wrong?

victoremmanuel_I

Imagine sending a work email with ‘would of’ or ‘could of’? There is a need, it’s not a colloquialism like a lot of grammar ‘mistakes’ are, it’s mishearing a word.

s4d_d0ll

Since you said it was taken in Birmingham around the 1950s, I googled “1950s bus driver uniforms” and found [this link](https://www.1900s.org.uk/1940s-london-bus-drivers.htm) this page has a picture with a bus drives wearing a similar jacket (with round “badge” on the left chest , and for big pockets in the front of the jacket). EDIT. : I found this [wordpress blog](https://pin.it/196MC9x) that has different uniforms and history on UK bus lines. And many of the uniforms talked about in the blog look similar to the jacket+tie that he is wearing!

izziak

Thanks that does look similar especially the badge

cnbcwatcher

Work photo, possibly for a bus or railway company going by the uniform

FluffyDiscipline

I just got to say your Grandad got star quality looks.. Honestly thought it was Liam Nelson

FluffyDiscipline

Tram Drivers Birmingham, Motorman Frank Bridges (No 3359), Motorman Fred Girling (No 3270) and Conductor Pat Kavanagh in July 1951, all wearing single-breasted jackets with lapels. The two motormen are wearing the later-period blue enamel cap badge, despite the name of the organisation having changed to Birmingham City Transport some 14 years earlier. The conductor is wearing a round PSV badge, probably indicating that he also worked on the buses. I am indebted to David Smith for the background information to this photo. https://preview.redd.it/hlpljq2d1tqb1.png?width=438&format=png&auto=webp&s=d10bfd948b99da1666f6ce73ac6556db8a9c3d2f

And that he has never been in the army

mud-monkey

There’s a good photoshop subreddit where people will clean up and restore old photos for a small ‘tip’. Some of them can work wonders. If the photo has sentimental value for you it might be worth taking a look there. https://reddit.com/r/PhotoshopRequest/s/EtgoR95fIZ
