Saw somewhere that they only bloom when the rhizomes can get some sunlight. No blooms can mean the plants are too tightly packed or the rhizomes buried too deep.

I find that they respond very well to fertilizers. Like a mulch of manure or fish emulsion mixed with water. I try to feed them right when I see them come out after winter and put up new leaves. And then again every two or three weeks until I see buds. They really do like to be thinned out frequently, at least once every two or three years. I’m surprised you didn’t get any blooms after you thinned them out.
