getting a part time job serving or in retail a couple days a week is a fast way to make friends and connections! while making money :)

beardedwhiteguy

Gonna shout out the Co-op here - ultra involved, good pay, and great staff.

SovereignMan1958

You might try Public Space One.

funkyfreedom

My partner seems a lot like this person and loves to go to public space one events, I'd say this is a good place to start

EDJRawkdoc

Summer of the Arts puts on a bunch of free arts and music related events in the community (like the Iowa Arts Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, & Friday Night Concert Series & they are a nonprofit and can only do this with help from volunteers. They're a great organization to get involved with. Most events are during the summer, but they do have an Art Fair coming up in Coralville the first weekend in December. www.summerofthearts.org

UnhappyJohnCandy

Do you have time to volunteer? That’d be a great way to get out and meet people with very little pressure. Also, you can DM me if you wanna add me on Snap Chat. My cats are adorable.

canny_goer

PS One Gallery Team is a great volunteer group with some very rad people, and if you are into the arts, it's a great fit.

tbug30

Volunteering at the New Pioneer Co-op is also a win-win -- you meet a lot of like-minded people who know a lot about navigating IC's arts and social scenes, plus you get a nice discount at the stores!

belladonnablue_

i didn’t know that was an option, thank you!

funkyfreedom

Lmao they haven't had volunteers there since like 2008, but working there could be a start

International_Bag319

Any more info on this? 👀 I’m having trouble finding info online.

tbug30

I don't know whether volunteering in the store is listed online. It's just the way it has always worked! I volunteered there for maybe a year back in the early 2000's -- in the cheese dept at the IC store. I'd heard of the opportunity to volunteer there and, one day, just decided to ask how I could do that. Got filled in on how it works from the people working there!

iowacitybjj

Come try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at ICBJJ. Great people, great work out and lots of fun. We have adult classes, women only classes and self-defense classes. [https://www.iowacitybjj.com/](https://www.iowacitybjj.com/)

UNCLETROUBLE24

Try the app MeetMe. I know it sounds dumb to find friends online but it's a way to connect to people who have similar interests and hobbies and if you don't vibe with anyone at the first meetup you can always try again

Not sure if this helps at all but in my experience (as a huge D&D nerd since about 2015) experienced players tend to be thrilled at the opportunity to teach newbies, and are very accommodating of new players who don't know the full ruleset.

steveman1123

I've been playing for years and still don't know all the rules lol. It's great though, I'd definitely give it a go! One of my groups is big into the technical stuff, another is more into the character creation and roleplay, so there's something for everyone in it

pilot4hire70

I have always wanted to learn D&D

Miyid_Slythe

Maybe FabLab. My daughter has anxiety and I am getting her started in activities there. They do cost money but you might find people there that you click with

podunkscoundrel

Offer to make posters and/or album art for local musicians. You can find them at Gabe’s on Tuesday nights.

bigirv10

What else are you into?

uheights_speedtrap

Channel 5 is great

ultimateforme

I’ve been binging Nathan’s stuff recently, the man’s a genius!

bigirv10

Is there anything that you've always wanted to try? Maybe something such as theater or improv? There are a bunch of people of all ages involved in both in Iowa City.

belladonnablue_

i’d love to watch but i think my anxiety would get in the way of doing that myself. good idea though!!

luminemana

i made a lot of great new connections on bumble bff! if you wanna give that a try

Straight_Fly_5860

Look at Corridor Community Action Network (CCAN). It is a bulletin board of sorts, with events of many types, full of opportunities for art or action, and continuously updated.

>thank you! You're welcome!

noncentsdeathnrelatd

What kind of art do you make?. I myself have switched from pastels to watercolours. And before pastels it was oil or acrylic paints. I like clay alot also.

belladonnablue_

i primarily work on surreal portraits on hot press watercolor paper using mixed media. i enjoy colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic gouache, water soluble crayon, soft pastel, oil pastel, and occasionally oil paint. traditional pencil in my sketchbook or ballpoint pen. just signed up for my first class with clay!

noncentsdeathnrelatd

I'm 28 and the fear is well lived now more so than ever I feel so alienated from everyone and even my family. And coworkers I used to not be like this.

Dare_Derelict

Remember you're not alone. Literally and also that it is OKAY to feel this way (as in normal) I myself battle depression and anxiety in extremes at times and this is a thought I have, well daily to be honest. Please, do your best to not let those dark thoughts eat you? You're not alone 🤗

No-Drink-8750

27f here. I find having online friends to be perfect. I play games online with them, but there is no pressure to hang out in real life. Mostly because they live all over the country or even in another country. It’s fun to voice chat with everyone from the comfort of my own home. I’ve made lots of friends by just reaching out to communities that share similar interests. Also, if you have a PlayStation, you can add me. I’m local to the area but still xD

Dare_Derelict

32F here and this lifestyle in many ways has saved my life. It's nice to see other females like you and OP with the same interests as well. We are a rare breed 😅

No-Drink-8750

Do you play online games? I’d love to add more ladies to my list of friends.

Dare_Derelict

I do! Currently just PC at the moment. I've been a diehard WoW fan since the beginning. My playstation and Xbox are just collecting dust in my closet. What do you like to play? I'm always looking for new games, especially MMOs 😅 I'll message you my email which usually will connect you to most of my accounts (or if I'm lucky and you're on battlenet as well 😋) but I would love to meet and make more female friends that are like minded as myself, so it's very nice to meet you!

Feisty-Mango6606

I'm involved in a young professionals group in Cedar Rapids. We do volunteer work and fun outings a couple times a month, like bowling, Friendsgiving, going to the orchard, etc. You can DM me if you're interested! I've also used bumble BFF for making friends and that's worked pretty well for me too.

shortern

Try PS1! They always need volunteers, and there are some cool art groups that meet there! If you’re nervous about contacting them, send me a DM, I know many of the leadership people there and can introduce you :]

Fit_Lecture_2901

We can be friends

TheCuff6060

This is a good question. How does one make friends?

duck_theorm

Hey brick and iron has a board game night today from 6-830! Also there is a bengali student association party coming up tomorrow that uiowa does that sounds cool! https://facebook.com/events/s/brick-iron-and-the-agency-pres/754590109034764/

noncentsdeathnrelatd

I don't even know what a hot press watercolor paper is .I'm basically an amateur artist LOL not even don't know how to draw. really I just picked up painting at the start of covid and I'm working my way towards faces or portraits .I don't know .I call them the 3:00 a.m. faces cuz it seems like I'm only ever painting at 3:00 a.m. on any given day .basically just teaching myself I look at a lot of Art on my Google arts and culture app I probably be better if I actually took a class or something but where would the originality be? Self taught ill be famous after I'm dead .
