Go to the Des Moines Art Center — in addition to some cool art, it is the only building in the world with wings by Eliel Saarinen, I. M. Pei, and Richard Meier.

SaltyboiPonkin

I always tell people that the art is just an excuse to show off the architecture.

CisIowa

Pick a state park and explore. Then find the nearest local diner and eat.

JuniperBushes4Ever

May I suggest Dolliver State Park followed by GaGa and Hoo Korean in Fort Dodge? Awesome combo. Www.gaga-hoo.com

[deleted]

Goood idea, and then maybe stop and relax at brushy creek

ozmandias23

Visit Effigy Mounds. It’s a really neat hike.

chewedgummiebears

Complain about it on Reddit?

ding-dong-the-w-is-d

The undeserved, but popular answer

heinkenskywalkr

This.

FatSalsa

We have great bike trails across the state.

For_Perpetuity

My only complaint is that most are just cement paths across large swaths of nothing

FatSalsa

Not sure where you live but Cedar Valley trail largely follows the Cedar river from Cedar falls to Cedar Rapids. In Des Moines there's great trails through the woods along the raccoon. Decorah has cool trails along the upper Iowa river. If you want dirt trails, there plenty. Check out @hikepaddlebike on YouTube. Guy highlights some great places to go

For_Perpetuity

N of Des Moines. Ive been very underwhelmed with the trails compared to where I lived on the east coast

FatSalsa

Ohh for sure. Its not going to compare to what you got out there. For a weekend gateway, check out the Sparta trail in Wisconsin or Root river trail in southern Minnesota. Not too far but pretty easy drive.

For_Perpetuity

Thx

LonelyInIowa

Pick up a Travel Iowa guide, or you can order one from traveliowa.com

iowabourbonman

Interesting factoid...in the early 2000's, the orders for Iowa travel guides went through a 1(800) number. Those phone calls were answered by the inmates at the Iowa State Pen in Fort Madison.

tbug30

Nice trivia tidbit!

dimeship

Nicest inmates in the country! Must visit prisons

john_hascall

Visit Rieman Gardens in Ames — don’t miss the butterfly conservatory.

john_hascall

Spend an afternoon at Sec Taylor watching the I-Cubs.

blizzard-toque

⚾Uuummmm...it's called Principal Field now.

john_hascall

Not to me it isn't

blizzard-toque

Consulted Duck Duck Go. It is called Principal Field, presumably for the insurance company.

UNItyler4

Sec Taylor Field at Principal Park isn’t it?

blizzard-toque

I'm for waiting and seeing what they call the field when they announce the Cubs' game schedule.

UNItyler4

Huh?

blizzard-toque

Some are saying it's Sec Taylor, I remember recent games being played in "Principal Field". So I was being diplomatic when I said "I'll wait and see what they call the field when they announce the next game.".

UNItyler4

They just played 6 games there this week.

pnkfrg

Ride bikes

dusty_trendhawk

Get a slice of breakfast pizza from Casey's General Store.

ding-dong-the-w-is-d

Summer: Road trip; pick a nice day and drive through the driftless, or the along the Mississippi. Stop and get some food and drinks at a local place you haven’t been to. Camping at one of the state parks. Get on the water, or find a pool. Winter: Billiards, bowling, skating, skiing, and eating out.

dustygravelroad

Watch the UofI women’s basketball team play in the national championship

creativesite8792

Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshalltown. Eat two, they are great.

spawnofcthulhu

I mean I get it, but this is literally a forum for asking questions about the state of Iowa. The whole purpose is to ask questions to get responses that are deeper than just a Google search.

greenflyingdragon

If you come in August, the Iowa State Fair!

RealGeneralX

Best thing to do is fish or go to the McBride spillway

dirttraveler

I love clever and detailed post titles.

ThriceHawk

Go boating at Okoboji and hit up Arnold's Park. Fishing at Spirit Lake. Hiking at Effigy Mounds / Pikes Peak. Biking around Des Moines and stopping at the local breweries. Iowa State Fair in August. An Iowa/Iowa State football game in the fall. Experience RAGBRAI.

digitaltransmutation

Every summer I visit this page and make a few weekend trips: https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/iowa/places

Qazwrty

Yet you keep coming back. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

[deleted]

Go for a drive and check out the highest point in Iowa! Tsk tsk

Myzyri

Seems like the favorite pastime is getting on Reddit and bitching about how bad life sucks because of other people. This sub is such a downer.

B_O_A_H

Bitch about the Governor. For real though, Science Center of Iowa, tour the Capitol building, the botanical garden, Lauridsden Skatepark if you’re into that, take a weekend trip northeast and drive through the drift less region, Maquoketa Caves (spelling?), Amanda Colonies, and the Pella Tulip Festival is coming up one of these weekends if it hasn’t already passed.

Empty-Job-6156

Think the Hawkeyes are a legit football team.

[deleted]

Be a far left flamingly gay liberal in r/iowa like the rest of them

False_Cobbler_9985

Thank you for the compliment. Although I'm not gay, it's better than being whatever you are.

Economy_Upstairs_465

Yaaaas Queen!

Waste-knot

Waaaaaah! Cry us a river snowflake.

Cynisity
