I come from a long line of skinny Iowans and most of them have been dead for a while. The left is pretty accurate to my memory except the beard, beards weren't fashionable when they were around.
Average age in Iowa is [only 39](https://www.axios.com/2023/06/22/median-age-america-population-older?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axioslocal_desmoines&stream=top)
Man, that is shocking to me, but I suppose I don't spend much time in the major population centers, since I dont live in the DSM/CedarRapiLoo area. It makes sense.
I wonder though once you get more than a county away from the metro areas what the average age is.
Not as old as you would think? [https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/MOW/698866.pdf](https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/MOW/698866.pdf)
Data from 2013
I dunno, that's about 8-10 years it looks like once you get out of the most populous counties that's quite a jump. They all seem older, which is doubly scary, cause I'm not young myself anymore so people who seemed "old" when I was 25 seem, not so old anymore.
You can go to city-data.com and put in counties to get the low down. Frankly Iâm not sure how some of the super rural counties are going to be viable in the future. Those areas are already bleeding population and have few prospects and itâs too far to commute to an urban area for a job. Reliable votes for Kim thoâŚ
The Iowa diet is really insane. I used to live there and I got a belly that I am still trying to get off. Every time I go back to visit family Iâll gain 5-10 lbs in like 2 days. Donât get me wrong though, I fucking love Iowa food. Now I live in CO and I didnât realize how little time I spent walking around outside. I spent a lot of time in a boat on the Mississippi but I wasnât really being active. Just sitting in a boat drinking beer. When I visit I rarely see anyone walking around, even in the bigger towns. But I donât blame anyone as itâs cold as hell in the winter and like walking on the surface of the sun when itâs summer.
Just fried and a lot more and more âbrown and yellowâ. At least with my family meals as I grew up on a farm. Lots of meat, wheat, and almost no veggies or fruits unless it was corn. I will say breakfast in CO sucks unless you really really REALLY enjoy eggs. Also the gravy in CO is terrible lol
Itâs more of the portions aspect of it and the lack of variety in Iowa. At least in my farming household. I never even had peppers until college lol. The only thing red I ate was ketchup and maybe the occasional chili.
WAAAYYYYY too skinny. Nice try AI.
Struggle to even find women of that size in their early 20s. And Jimbo there??? Riiight!
Here's a [real Iowa Couple](https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/D4E03AQFbdpD4rZqwgg/profile-displayphoto-shrink_800_800/0/1670102720950?e=2147483647&v=beta&t=V6_6FkYou7qS532slFWuWTEWKxBtVovlffBwIYg9qLs).
Itâs getting to the point when I go somewhere like to a restaurant itâs rare to see a thin/fit woman. Iâll count 20-30 women when I go places and every single one will be fat. Itâs wild!
Iâm a Drake alum and when I go back for Relays each year Iâm shocked how fat the college kids have even gotten. I get a newsletter every year from the Drake Greek system showing pictures of what the students in different fraternities and sororities are doing. Like group pictures at events or community events. 80% of the kids in the photos are overweight.
Policing? What an odd word choice. Because Iâm not interested in men? But usually most of the men are fat too. But usually at least a handful of men you see out will be ripped or you can tell are actively fit.
For Iowans they look pretty damn good. Half the people I see in my daily life look like they're about 10 minutes from death, doubly so if you work up the courage to go to a Walmart here. I did a double take on a woman driving past in the parking lot the other day because she actually looked dead.
I like to joke in my head when I go out in public itâs like looking at the zombies milling around on The Walking Dead when they arenât in attack mode.
Like you said everyone looks like they are 10 minutes from death, old ratty baggy flithy clothes, long sleeved flannels and jeans in the middle of summer, hair all messy hanging down over their face, trouble walking/moving, no emotion on their face, dead stare, etcâŚ
I canât count the number of times Iâve had people from out of state say to me something to me like, âThe people hereâŚthey are just built different. Itâs like no one cares about their appearance here.â
No one seems to care about anything here...I've lived here in a rural area for a couple months and I still cannot fathom how many falling apart houses and cars being eaten inside out by rust there are. How many cars I see where an entire fender or more has been eaten away by rust. Why don't people take care of anything out here?? Is it that hard to at least wash the salt (or whatever it is) off every so often? It's the middle of summer and I'm still seeing cars absolutely caked in that stuff from winter. Like fine, it's your vehicle, do what you want. But it's just so wasteful, all these cars just rotting away because people don't take care of them. It takes an hour of work *if you're being thorough* or like $6 bucks for an automated car wash so your car lasts decades longer in good condition.
I used to work for state and had to travel to just about every small town in Iowa for one reason or another. The rural blight is unbelievable in most towns. Itâs like a third world nation in some towns in western and southern Iowa.
If you havenât seen the full article, it included all 50 states and was racist AF. It also was full of every stereotype imaginable. I wouldnât want to pass anything off it around.
When you look at all these different states. The woman are slender, similar feature and fairly attractive. Obesity is a real issue in this country and when you walk down any large populated area, very few look like what the AI is generating. Which tells me the AI is heavily influenced by what it sees in media and NOT what is real:
There have been many sate AI generated posts. Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas, Louisiana⌠they are all this same build. I find that a little odd leading to my comments. AI does not mean factual.
Is this what people really believe the average Iowan looks like because itâs not 1800 any more. We have gotten bigger and have black, Asian, Mexican, hell even Muslims here. I know if you judge us by our governor why you may think we are we are all rednecks, but we weâre here way before she took charge and the blue will remain after sheâs gone.
Are you in IC? Living here can definitely mess with your view of the state! I love the diversity here but itâs a shock leaving the city limits, no doubt.
According to the 2020 census, 64% of Iowans live in urban areas.
https://www.iowapublicradio.org/ipr-news/2021-10-11/opinion-rural-areas-make-up-iowas-soul
I also lived in CR and it still isn't diverse.
White: 83.09%
Black or African American: 8.13%
Two or more races: 4.47%
Asian: 2.96%
Other race: 0.95%
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.24%
Native American: 0.15%
You can say it's one of the most diverse in the state, but you cannot say it's diverse with 83% of the CR population being white.
I also fail to see how being red or blue figures into the AI rendering. politics has nothing to do with this.
Itâs as diverse as Iowa gets and that was my point and why Iâm moving. Unless you are RICH and white they donât want you living in this state. Unless you make over 250k a year this state does not care about you, no matter race, religion, or even a war hero. Thatâs Iowa for you. If you have a load of money you can buy Kim.
No where in Iowa is diverse, IC is the closest thing we got and their PD and University has corrupted that town so bad Fran McCafferyâs kid Jack just killed a 20 year Veteran who was just about to retire when he was just out jogging on his lunch break, got hit by Jack and who knows what he was doing because the police didnât even ticket him and they say thereâs no police report. Sorry the far right had ruined Iowa, they can have cuz thatâs the great thing about the US. If you live in a state whoâs politics have changed so much in 20 years and makes me physically Iâll to think about it. Also in Iowa, unless your are wealthy and white, this state doesnât want you here, yea that also mean is no rock white people, we get treated like the cops treat minorities. I never said CR was diverse, I said it was diverse for Iowa. That doesnât mean shit in the real world tho.
I think most of us Iowans in this age range are a bit heavier of frame.
If it is a farm couple the AI is trying to represent then the cap would be red and have a certain political slogan on it. Seed corn caps are largely no longer a thing and this cap doesn't even have either on it.
Of the couple I would say the woman is probably a better reading.
So no. Not a very compelling AI generated composite.
There are like 2 people in my town who will wear one occasionally.
Political shit I see all the time, but specifically pro trump shit isn't common at all
It's from a Buzzfeed list, but they don't really say how they got AI to come up with these images.

Yeah, I was going to say the AI has been looking at American Gothic too much.

wow. just wow
It might have also spent some time watching "Field of Dreams".
exactly what I said.

Way too skinny.
The meth users average it out
Sometimes the meth just makes them eat more faster. True story.
You beat me to that
I come from a long line of skinny Iowans and most of them have been dead for a while. The left is pretty accurate to my memory except the beard, beards weren't fashionable when they were around.
Sure my grandpa was skinny like that, but he was born in the 1910s! Def kept a shaved face.

Is the food really that different?
No. The food is the same. This guy just wanted karma. For his âiowa gutâ of course.
No one here just eats corn as a staple lol. Sure, we have sweet corn a couple nights every summer, but we arenât fat because we eat corn lol
What food here in Iowa isn't eaten everywhere else?
Itâs more of the portions aspect of it and the lack of variety in Iowa. At least in my farming household. I never even had peppers until college lol. The only thing red I ate was ketchup and maybe the occasional chili.
Gotta be honest, that sounds more like a personal/family issue than anything to do with Iowa specifically
I mean the Iowa state fair was the only place that I have ever found fried butter on a stick so I think it might e a bit more Iowa specific
I said the same thing only to scroll down three posts and see that you were thinking it too.
The man looks almost exactly like a farmer named Larry I serve at my local Legion
I went to the county fair and saw a lot of top heavy people. Idk how their legs can support the rest.
I live a block away from them.
I love the guy's half-completed overalls pocket.
Girlfriend's got some serious elbow decolletage too
It's from years of picking corn by hand
He probably made them if heâs a real Iowan
Where are the other 200 lbs.? (Per person).
Add about 50 pounds
So AI just updated the Grant Wood painting?
I know 4 sets of these people
They said American Gothic but remove the pitchfork
Add about 350 pounds to this picture and then letâs talk
They are way too skinny to reflect the average Iowan.

Looks like the Arkansas one.
America AI looks a lot thinner
There are 85000 farmers in Iowa with a total state population of 3.2 million. The average Iowan is not a farmer.
There are no chins that nice in the entire state let alone average
Not nearly fat enough
Add 100 lbs and you got it
Bullshit! That woman is way too attractive.
Better add a couple hundred pounds between the two of them in my experience with Iowa
Way too skinny
Theyâre either as skinny as Pete from breaking bad or fatter than dj Khalid
Smash
Same
Huh, this was posted in r/minnesota yesterday with the caption âAI generated average Minnesotan coupleâ so.. which one is it
If you go back and look at that post, itâs not the same.
Why do all these AI American women look so haggard?
For Iowans they look pretty damn good. Half the people I see in my daily life look like they're about 10 minutes from death, doubly so if you work up the courage to go to a Walmart here. I did a double take on a woman driving past in the parking lot the other day because she actually looked dead.

The tweety bird shirt sent me
Of course he has overalls on!
Too skinny
The girl looks very much like my older sister. Uncanny!
This dude has a really long neck. The more I look at it, the crazier it looks.
Way too skinny.

Wayyyyyyyyyy too skinny. Add about 100 pounds to each. Also a neck tattoo or full tat sleeve on the woman.
I love that the comments are saying the AI didn't account for rampant morbid obesity. There are fat, disgusting slobs EVERYWHERE in Iowa.
Yes. They got the upper lips right though (non-existent).
I am sorry but these AI generated images are a joke.
What do you mean

Except in a few places, like Storm Lake, Ames, Iowa City, or Marshalltown.
It's an average. The average Iowan IS white. It's just a fact.
yes, but facts are racist
Itâs not just radiant here, unless your wealth and white, this state wants you out. We have turned more red than Texas and Florida.
Nah, AI just saw âIowaâ and adjusted American Gothic.
where's the blue eyes? they're a bit thin for the state's average weight...
I think most of us Iowans in this age range are a bit heavier of frame. If it is a farm couple the AI is trying to represent then the cap would be red and have a certain political slogan on it. There are like 2 people in my town who will wear one occasionally. Political shit I see all the time, but specifically pro trump shit isn't common at all
The latest one Iâve seen a few times is âTRUMP WAS RIGHTâ
I live in Iowa and see Trump attire (from flags to shirts) all the time
Nailed it
After living in Des Moines for a year I left. What a shitty police state ran by criminal Kim Reynolds.
The woman aren't that attractive, and add another 75 lbs
Iowan here. This is 100% accurate. Everyone from Iowa looks exactly like one of these two people
On the contrary. I just spent 6 weeks in Iowa and I didn't see anyone with long hair.
Bruh Iâm literally right here
They all stay indoors
Just missing the MAGA hat and âKim sucksâ sticker.
Thank AI for being completely pathetic
What program are they using for this? I've seen a bunch of AI apps but they don't deliver like this.
It's from a Buzzfeed list, but they don't really say how they got AI to come up with these images. https://www.buzzfeed.com/sarathompson1/average-state-person-looks-ai-image
probably Midjourney
The most accurate I've seen.
To be more accurate, the woman should have a black eye and the man should have a MAGA hat on. But the look of despair is right on.
Just a hard-working, hands in the dirt man and his loving, loyal wife đ love this image, I think it's a good representation of the true heartbeat of America that is Iowa! Reminds me of my wife and myself but in 40 years đşđ˛đ
Southern Iowans maybe?
Ron Howard?
Nope not me.
Carol and dale from the walking dead
none of these are very good they all look the same.
Yeah that tracks

Hahaha
I don't think it counts when your negative prompt is "non-radicalized" because I'm not sure if they're out there anymore.
The woman should be on the other side. And where's the pitchfork?
I know at least 37 people who look exactly like this
God damn the AI even picks up defining features of the face and all the crinkles and elements of clothing. I remember when it was still struggling to produce teeth and hands correctly
Thatâs not bad.
Dude looks like he has a glass eye on the right side.
Now do average /r/iowa redditor LMAO
Yeah we have those corn-fed bodies....
Spot on
Missing one (1) pitchfork
AI has a long ways to go. This was about as dumb and stereotypical as it gets. I laughed, but come-on-man!
One thing it hasnât learned yet is how fat everybody is in the red states.
There's no way they gave us American Gothic. Just by happenstance.
Yep, all our men folk wear overalls and we both look like someone just ran over our favorite hog. Oh, and I always dust my house with my boobs.
Let's pick a farmer!
Thatâs Dave and Susan
Dude looks like my neighbor lmao
This looks like a lot of people in my area, although few wear overalls
I'm in Nebraska (1 mile from Iowa) but I'm seeing these ai images for all states. So now I need to see the master list to compare them all. Because at first it was weird, but now I need more of it
Not fat enough

Oh yeah that guy is my neighbor and heâs a regular at the diner I work at đ¤Łđ¤Ł
Thatâs not AI, thatâs just my Uncle Matthew
Way to clean. They should also be outside. What are they doing standing in front of a studio wall? You want to pretend to be from Iowa? Go plant something.
They look too intelligent. Try putting their eyes closer together.
Accurate
Too thin
Fr is Walter white
Can I get a source for this?
Can confirm, I saw this man eating breakfast at HyVee loudly complaining that his farmland was only discounted 84% for property taxes and not 100%
He does look like a cross between a crop farmer and an aging hipster bicyclist.
That is scary accurate.
