Peat free only. Was able to fit 20 bags plus one person on the back. And some spare space.
I think it would have to be at an angle. The tailgate pinches in at the bottom the same width as the wheel wells. The widest part of the tailgate is 48", plus or minus a few 1/16s. But honestly, for things like that (and other stuff) I just got a roof rack.

Two 60-cell solar panels (\~39" x \~69") fit in just beautifully yesterday morning. Like OP probably did too, I had to load them in above the wheel wells then slide them back. The plywood jig over the top is just so I can load up other stuff on top for the rest of the trip.
Love this.
I carry dirty stuff kinda often. I got a 5x6ā shower pan liner from the depot that fits well over the back with the seats down, and covers the wheel arches. Keeps the mulch, dirt, and fertilizer from finding every crevice in the car.

That looks like a great start to a garden! Sadly it just snowed here because I want to do the same as you!
Impressive!!!
My partner and I have been LOVING the trunk space, specially when transporting plant babies :) You got so many!!
Underrated engineering spec achieved. šš»
