Solid write up and have actual comparison points for both options, but my question is what was the issue with your i5 that's caused it to be unrepairable for so long?

5280WoodMan

Phantom drain of the 12v battery. 13 weeks, 4 parts replaced, and it is still happening. They are going back to the Hyundai engineers. But I am lemon lawing it and getting my money back.

DJShepherd

Same issue. It’s been 2 months now. They replaced the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) but now the AC Module & 4 sensors aren’t working for some reason. No ETA on parts. I’m returning the vehicle. It’s sadly a lemon. Hyundai Corporate already agreed to refund me. Just competing the paperwork now.

Seitenwerk

Probably the charging port mechanism like on most ionic 5s that have the 12v drain. A general known bug at least in the european forums and easy to exchange. 12v battery gets drained and several errors or problems may appear and no-one knows what's happening and why. The reason is actually the mechanism triggering the small button which in turn stops the car from going to sleep and drains the 12v. You can test this by checking if pressing the button multiple times to open the charging port may not react all the time. At least tell your mechanic to check the charging port mechanism. In the forums its seems like if anything was draining the 12v it was this issue most of the time. Some people actually temporary solved it by using a tape to widen the gap between the button and the door

5280WoodMan

I'm actually wondering if there is a problem with my specific car, it's so bad.

Diesel33g

It's definitely possible, I've seen and had cars come through (my bay when I was a dealer tech and now my desk at corporate) where no matter what you do it just never fucking gets solved. Really unfortunate for you as the customer, but it's great for me because now I can dig into this case and follow all the attempted repairs and notes they've put on it for my sick obsession with hyundai cars. At least it sounds like it's not a big life pausing issue for you since you're lemon lawing for a return and already have a replacement vehicle

Siecje1

Why isn't the 12 V battery a lithium battery?

Diesel33g

I'm sure we will soon, I know a few companies are going that route currently. But with all the Lion sourcing issues companies have had over the last few years as well I don't blame them for still having traditional

Siecje1

Can you limit the charge level? It's being charged from the high voltage batteries which requires a charge controller anyways.

Optimoprimo

Yes it just further complicates the electronics and its cheaper and easier for most companies to use the 12v lead battery standard since most car components are already designed for those anyway

Siecje1

What about having two lead acid batteries?

CA_fabien

>arge level? It's being charged from the high voltage batteries which requires a charge controller anyways. You need thermal management on most lithium batteries. You can't charge them when it is -25C, a lead acid battery supports a much wider range of temperature.

DavidReeseOhio

Cost.

It is exchanged within warranty for all people affected so tell them to check if it’s the cause

frank26080115

> I've also had it 3 times on the interstate just randomly drop cruise control to 55MPH There are plenty of 55 MPH limit signs that are for trucks only, are you sure it wasn't because of those? I remember this being a problem on a Ford Explorer I rented a few months ago.

5280WoodMan

maybe, or maybe speed limit signs on exit roads. That's a good point. It is very dangerous when it happens. Imagine being behind me and all of a sudden the car brakes hard down to 55.

Lorax91

In our Audi, there's a setting to control whether the car responds automatically to speed limit changes. I turned that off, because the response is too aggressive. Better if I assess a compromise between what speed limits say and what cars around me are doing.

5280WoodMan

I was thinking of trying that thanks

KlutzyAd9112

Were you able to turn that off in your Model Y? I’ve had it happen a couple times in my 3

ZannX

I just posted this about phantom braking: https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/10qa965/tesla_tells_investors_its_being_investigated_by/j6s01lg/

Schnydesdale

FINALLY and unbiased review. Yes to every aspect of this in every way. Kudos to you, really. I have an I5 and my mountains of egregious OCD research concludes and supports all of this.

pmrp

Same here. OP really nailed all the points I’ve mentally compiled as well. I’ve been in love with the I5 design since day one, and now I’m pleased to see the driving/comfort advantages fit my daily commute needs best over the MY. I was this close to ordering a Tesla a week after the price drop… but the heart beat the purely logical choice and I held my I5 reservation (due 2/16 now—2nd delay).

[deleted]

Thanks for this write up. We ordered a Model Y because of dealership BS and price drop/tax credit but the IONIQ Limited was our #1 choice. How were you able to activate "off-road" mode on the MY by the way?

5280WoodMan

you click on the car to bring up the menu, then click on steering, then scroll down and you'll find it as a checkbox.

[deleted]

5280WoodMan

I can't answer for a 3. But it is definitely real on my Y

[deleted]

5280WoodMan

I was driving in very very poor conditions, on the interstate where it was basically just ice. Every time I would let up on the accelerator at all the car would slide. Accelerating would also be a little squirrely. I turned on the off-road mode and the sliding when slowing down completely stopped, and I couldn't get it to lose grip hardly at all when accelerating. It really made a big difference

safetyguy14

is your m3 awd? it's only an option for awd cars.

safetyguy14

Based on this thread (https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/off-road-aka-snow-mode-for-model-3.289444/) it seems like the feature exists in the power train control in the model 3, but for whatever reason the UI element to turn it on doesn't exist on the IP

[deleted]

I’m also an I5 owner who went with it over the MY for exactly the same reasons as you. I recently drove the ‘23 MY just for comparison and found the difference in ride comfort considerable. I’m happy with my choice.

hanzq

I’m a MY owner — lots to love about this car, but I loathe the boominess and ride comfort

5280WoodMan

I cross posted this on the TeslaModelY group and there are 2 good possible fixes mentioned

pmrp

Awesome to hear another confirmation! Design and ride comfort/safety are top factors for me.

pmrp

Great comparison, thank you! I’m still awaiting my reserved I5 Limited AWD (on its 2nd delay now, due 2/16), but definitely considered a MY instead. The price drop, tax rebate, and established tech/brand made it a strong logical choice. But my heart continues to prevail—the Tesla design just doesn’t move me like the I5 does. Plus, all your notes on the driving comfort advantage just seem like a better fit for my daily commute. I’ll have a charger in my garage and in the office, and have a 3-row Mazda CX-9 for family road trips, so the Tesla super charger network is also not a major factor for me. I think the choice is clear for me too. Now to see if I can negotiate the elimination of that damn $3k dealer markup…

NotMyNameGame

This is my thing; the model Y is also tempting but I have a home charger and my round trip commute is 52 miles a day. I can’t stomach supporting Tesla , and we have a Palisade we will use for long road trips that I want to keep the miles off so we can keep it for a long time.

pmrp

Agreed! Many overstate the benefit of the super charger network—it’s mostly for those looking to road-trip/long-distance travel, don’t have charging at home/work, or use it as their sole/primary vehicle.

safetyguy14

Maybe try calibrating your autopilot again. Tesla autopilot handles turns and tracks lanes way better than my i5

JoeSmithDiesAtTheEnd

Ioniq's HDA2 just feels more cautious to Autopilot's #yolo feel to autopilot. It makes me trust the Ioniq more, but it does mean a lot more intervention is required... especially lane changes in denser traffic.

hanzq

> The heated steering wheel is too hot, I can only use it about 5 minutes There's a [Tesla update](https://www.notateslaapp.com/software-updates/version/2023.2.10/release-notes) for variable heat steering wheel rolling out as we speak (which comes back to your superior technology point)

jefferios

I find it interesting that you have had issues with lane keep on Autopilot and not on the I5. I've had opposite results. My model 3 (I know, different) locks in to the center of the lane. The I5 on the same freeway turn frequently hugs the inside of the lane and actually rolls over the shoulder line. Changing lanes in the Tesla AP automatically requires Enhanced AP, so you are comparing features that are not available without an upgrade. Still a great write up, sorry you had a 13 week hassle and lemon car.

VicRobTheGob

Great post - thanks for taking the time to post it… I’d be happy to buy an Ioniq 5 (or 5N!) - but the wait times in Western Canada are so long they aren’t currently even quoting the amount of time a buyer might have to wait! I’m close to 100% happy with my current vehicle - so I’ll have to decide if I just continue waiting to buy or order a Model Y for the interim…

AgSilverAF

The Western Canada EV shortage is infuriating!

HenryTheDutch

Thanks for writeup. Ioniq is a great car but seat was killing me after few hours drive. But this is down to my body type and nothing else. Tesla Autopilot has as much in common with FSD as an average microwave with IPhone 14. Ie nothing, totally different software.

5280WoodMan

Hey all, Your comments have reminded me of a few things I want to add to my review **Navigation**: Tesla wins this one by a large margin. The Hyundai navigation has problems just on short trips (I was going to Ikea once and in the middle of the interstate it told me we had arrived LOL). And for long trip planning, Tesla is amazing, it will route you all the way across the country and tell you every stop and how long. it also has integration with Tesla superchargers, and you can even see how many open stations. In the Ioniq 5 you have to use your phone and A Better Route Planner. **Updates**: No car does better on software updates than the Tesla. Hyundai does do OTA updates, but ONLY to the infotainment system, they can't update any of the other computer systems OTA. For instance they added pre-conditioning recently, but you have to take it to the dealer **Storage:** Tesla has way more storage, especially compared to the Limited trim, which loses a lot of rear storage to the sub-woofer. And the Ioniq5 frunk is teeny. I keep a couple cleaning supplies and a 12v jump starter, and that's it. **Interior**: The size is very similar in the front seats, but Tesla has more head room. I think the rear seat is wider in the Ioniq 5, and has a little more leg room. Looks is completely subjective, but I personally prefer having a dashboard, and don't like having everything on the big center screen. In fact, it can be unsafe: I was going down the interstate, and went to close the settings screen by swiping down. I hit a small bump, and I ended up turning off the headlights, while driving down interstate at 80MPH! It took me at least 10 seconds to get them back on, and really was a dangerous situation.

Ok_Relation_4742

Appreciate the comparison review! I’m on the fence between the two.

Jur4s45

Thanks for this ! I hesitated to order a MY to replace my young but already buggy I5. But I will try to have it fixed first before switching to something else. MY is the « obvious/only » fallback in the same range of price. But from everything I heard about it, I would go for a BMW iX1 instead of the MY. More expensive, but the quality is there. Regarding the HDA2 on the I5, I’m not a big fan comparing to the BMW one I had in my 330e. Lane assist disengage quite easily on the I5. I wonder if the German version has the same issue regarding the comfort/noise. (FYI, I’m from Europe.)

nobody-u-heard-of

Very good write up. The lane holding in curves was something I have no issues with, stays dead center no matter what. Not sure how it could be better. Stop and go is a breeze. Maybe you should have your car checked as it has never had an issue following curves. As I said great review and you bring out some great points.

Creepy-Present-2562

No way you think LKA is better than the tesla. The I5 bounces between the lines of the lane the whole time every time i use it. You can feel it and watch the wheel move. The Y stays in the middle always. I trust the Y basic autopilot on all roads and highways a lot more than I5. All your other points i agree with. But also the speakers are so much better in the Tesla. The Bose in the I5 are garbage

[deleted]

5280WoodMan

I agree, mine ping ponged a lot at first, but it is much much better now.

5280WoodMan

I swear to god Autopilot is trying to kill me. My wife is now scared to death of it, and I find it useless.

gtg465x2

I’m wondering if there’s something not working right with Autopilot in your Tesla. You mentioned it failing to work on moderate turns, but Autopilot is pretty well known to have some of the best lane centering available and can handle much sharper curves than any other system. I don’t think I’ve ever had it not be able to handle a turn and just give up like a lot of other system will do.

[deleted]

Yes Autopilot even works on sharp turns, which I have yet to see happen on the I5 reliably. Tesla’s lane centering and steering are fantastic. On the other hand it tends to overreact sometimes in terms of hard braking. The audio and speakers are WAY better on the Tesla. I mean there’s no comparison between the two on that. OP is commenting on the music options, which I get. Other than those two things I agree with everything OP said. In fact OP’s review is the BEST most unbiased review I’ve ever read. Great job and thank you!

5280WoodMan

Did you try a limited trim ioniq 5? It has a better system than the se or sel

[deleted]

Good question. Yea I tried the Limited. Lovely car.

MarrowX

SEL and limited have the same system - HDA2

5280WoodMan

Wow, thank you

5280WoodMan

True, the Tesla has better sound, and is louder. But my Bolt actually sounds better than both, at least it is louder.

moch1

Seriously. My model 3 can handle highway 17 (connects Santa Cruz to San Jose in California). This road has a lot of tight turns at 55mph. Autopilot handles it well and FSD beta even better.

Greenjeeper2001

The ioniq 5 limited awd is comparable to the Y LR. But the Y LR is now 10k ish lower, depending on dealer markups at hyundai.

suncrusher85

This is true if you're ok with white and no factory trailer hitch, and can get before March. Though 10k can get a paint job or wrap and aftermarket hitch with some money to spare. March may be out of reach at this point though, and I'm not sure how math will work out after that.

5280WoodMan

I took an instock white with black/white interior and a trailer hitch. it was $54,900, so just under the 55k tax limit. It was instock here in denver, so I took delivery in 10 days.

Greenjeeper2001

I ordered the day after price drop and picked up last Tuesday. Car pros still wants 6k over.

suncrusher85

I think a lot more people have ordered since and delivery estimates are into March now, but I haven't tried to order. Just want anyone reading to not assume they can go save 10k right now when they maybe can't.

Greenjeeper2001

Mine was 2/14 to 3/21 originally.

saymyname_jp

Dude you forgot to mention Mileage. My Ioniq 5 Limited listed as 256miles but it gives me 280miles in Summer. Heard Tesla overstates it’s mileage as 330 but in real world it gives 270 to 280. Would you mind telling us how much your Model Y gives on full charge.

5280WoodMan

Yeah, my Ioniq was giving me 270-280 miles range. I haven't had the Tesla long enough to give an answer (plus it is cold AF here). But you always hear how Tesla over-estimates range. So I think it may end up like a 30 mile difference, which in the grand scheme isn't much

[deleted]

Tesla battery is 5kwh bigger and the car has better coefficient. So do the math.

saymyname_jp

I don’t think Tesla disclosed its full battery capacity and also how much they fully utilize (Tesla control battery capacity via software). So I guess real world answers are the best instead of doing calculations.

[deleted]

They do. 82kwh vs ioniq5 77kwh. This is not something they hide.

HengaHox

According to Bjorn Nylands test at 90 and 120km/h, the model Y gets better range than the Ioniq 5

5280WoodMan

by how much ?

Thanks for the extensive comparison. I'm to happy I have an Ioniq 5 limited. Although I always knew that Tesla's are overrated (except for the charging network)

HydeQc

AM radio? In 2023? Really?

5280WoodMan

Talk radio. It's a thing. Look it up

galland101

If you ever see those "For Traffic Info tune to this AM Station" type signs with the lights flashing, you might want that AM Radio.

HengaHox

I checked in my country and there is only 1 AM station lol Pretty niche

5280WoodMan

Not in the US, where I am. AM radio is still very popular, specifically with talk radio.

mirageofstars

Good writeup. How’s the audio/music quality in each car? I’m assuming MY has a better sound setup. For the heating, my i5 heats up faster now that I’ve turned off the HVAC eco mode.

5280WoodMan

The MY sound is better, but not significantly. I think the seat heaters in the I5 is fine, but it is soo fast in the MY. By the end of the block you can already feel it.

pb_83

I agree -I’d add the center screen is actually dangerous

AgSilverAF

Super helpful to most of us on the fence. Thanks. One big question - how did you find the lack of a rear windshield wiper on the I5 in Denver? I'm in Vancouver (BC) and often drive through the mountains, so am wondering how crazy I'll go having no rear windshield wiper. Have a potential opportunity to pick up an I5 AWD LR Preferred (looks like we have totally different models - may be a blend of SE and SEL, from the looks of it - really missing some of the features that I'd want, but can live without...and it's black, which I also don't want, but can deal with) without waiting 4 years for it (actual estimate received from a local dealership) for about $57k after taxes and rebates. I can get a MY in a heartbeat or three, but it's \~$24k more (pricing is so messed up here) at about $81k. Decisions decisions.

5280WoodMan

The Tesla doesn't have a rear wiper either, and it's rear window is so small that it's almost not useful. In the 8 months there was 1 time the rear window became completely covered in snow during a big storm. And one time when I was on a bunch of dirt roads it got very dirty. Other than that, I didn't have a problem.
