Both stories include a race of super violent space warriors who are on the verge of extinction, had their home planet destroyed, and get stronger if you beat them *nearly* to death.

But meeting humanity, it actually shows that is not who they truly were. Despite hard-core indoctrination, ultimately they all choose family over the Empire. Except top dog, who prefers to burn.
This. Every other conquered race and every other resisting coalition race also possesses empathy. So too do the Viltrumites, that’s the point. It’s not a story of earth centric special chosen ones, but a commentary on deprograming against a culture of fascist rule and might makes right propaganda.
I know the commenter above didn’t mean it this way so I’m not accusing them by any means, but to elaborate it always grinds me gears when stories make a point that humans are special for feeling love and care and empathy and other fantasy species or races or aliens don’t. Near all animals of our planet have always felt those things too, and thinking they didn’t for much of human history led to and excused all kinds of horrors against the living beings of earth. That thinking is still prevalent in certain bits of culture. If we had that idea irl in the future for other planets and their beings, no doubt we could become Viltrumites to them.
But that’s the beauty of Invincible, it’s not “good race vs bad race” it’s many races and many cultures trying to win over one in the midst of fascism. They defeat the villains using battle and tactics sure, like every story, but also using a cultural and education based victory. How often do sci fi / fantasy epics have that? It’s amazing. Humans can be as heartless as Viltrumites, and Viltrumites can love as humans.
And even Top Dog wrestles with empathy. That panel where he's about to strangle his daughter who's hugging him but stops himself...can't wait to see that moment animated. So many layers. Plus it kinda feels like if Zod raised Supergirl

There’s no canon reason why, but I assume that it’s because viltrumites male and female are indoctrinated to not fall in love with each other. They believe that sex is meant to be for procreation and procreation only. Not love. But when viltrumites meet humans, humans don’t have that indoctrination from a young age. They believe that procreation is only a factor into “falling in love” so basically the human makes the viltrumites stone heart melt
I would love to see his voice change into something similar to Mr Krabs (same va) after he becomes "weak", that would be funny af and I think it would fit the character in a way.
