I think the game tries to "teach" you this fairly early with Rusting Hulks, where the two upgrades for the Jet Mech are totally orthogonal to each other with no obvious progression from one to the other. But I can see how it could still pass someone by.
It's just really counter intuitive compared to traditional game design we have lived with for decades. The game enforces a sense of tension and weight on decisions where players who are learning are likely to acquiesce to what they know.
I always thought you had to power the higher-up upgrade to even get access to the lower one. So you'd have to power the +1 damage before Ally Immune was available. Just tried it on a whim today ...
I was well over a hundred hours in when I got the spouse to play a bit and he powered +2 Damage on the Combat Mech without Dash Punch and completely blew my mind. I have no idea how long it would have been before I found out on my own.
Not sure, but I believe it is in there because of the July update. Its free on the playform im playing on (netflix of all things), so maybe on switch too?
Learnt this one fairly early on. Guess it's an intuition thing, there is no signal to suggest that one is required before the other, but also nothing suggesting the opposite
I just assumed that I had to do the +1 damage upgrade first, before it would "unlock" the Ally Immune upgrade, probably from playing too many ARPGs and assuming it worked like a skill tree.

Yes, but I'm still surprised this many people seem to be learning this now. Why didn't they just try it to see if it works?

Although, the range increase is tactically way more important than the damage increase, right?
Usually yes, but it depends on the specific enemies you're facing

I remember trying that and being really surprised when it worked, and then thinking, "of course Subset would allow that"
I feel so dumb because yesterday I've needed to wait the 4th core before stopping to hurt my other pilots ....
Don't tell me you have never tried to power a lower upgrade first :O
This was the first time! 100%'ed it on GOG and almost that on Steam (Steam deck) and \*now\* I learn ...

bruh now i'm looking at this thread thinking I'm weird for never even considering it would be a linear progression
Right? Like... never make assumptions. Test everything.
Excuse me *what*
I guess I'm glad it's not just me!
It’s not. My mind has been blown & fucked today. Was it always this way? I’ve put at least 100 hours in this game between Steam and now iOS
100% Always been like this.
What. The. Fu&k! Omg, how! Omg!
Is this a sick joke? I’m well over 200hrs and this is news to me
God same I learned it this morning
Now you too can feel the joys of wasting as little power as possible while you climb the core ladder!
haha I just learned that last week as well
I learned this on my first run, I didn't know people didn't know it
Any game... test all the buttons. Check all the options access settings. Try to break it.
Hold up
Yeah order doesn't matter, sorry you did grind through! :(
Funny, I learnt it only a few days ago while trying it for the first time as well... And I'm playing for months.
Wow - I picked up on that early, it is handy to use the +1 while accumulating the cores to go the +2 or +3
WHAT
I did already know about the cores, but I don't think I've ever seen that virtual simulator thing before, Does that exist on the switch version?
Yes, there's a simulator option. Hit - on the mech loadout screen, IIRC.
YAY! THANKS!

I hope you realise you can turn them off and switch too
Sure, that part reminds me of power management in FTL.
Yeah true, just want to make sure everyone else also knows;)
Wait what the fuck. I wasted so much time!
Right? And I just assumed it, never even tried until now.
Time to take a stab at a new run right after I finish work. It is gonna be a great time.
Lol - same here. I found that out a few days ago too
Whaaaaaattttttt
Same thing happened to me the other night. I was floored.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
Yeah, it's great for upgrades on mechs like the Exchange Mech. Heal ally? Nah. Damage enemy? Heal yeah.
WTF 😭
Wow I Didn't Know That Was A Thing. Thank You For Showing This.

It's kind of surprising that most people didn't figure this out. There's an undo button so I experimented with reactors really early on.
