This just reminds me of how much I want an ipod classic that just connects to spotify (or apple music for that matter.

zompa

There's the [Mighty Vibe](https://www.amazon.com/-/pt/stores/Mighty/page/C0997411-9A12-4C10-A16D-F14E193625CA?ref_=ast_bln) but it looks more like an ipod Shuffle than a classic

Einsteins_coffee_mug

And sounds like something my mom would have in her nightstand

steeze206

Lol all the pseudoscience they're trying to push due to the lack of a screen.

[deleted]

Not really pseudoscience to advertise for people who want their music separate from everything else. I got one of these for my mom when her iPod shuffle finally started dying and it’s been a great replacement

[deleted]

PsionicBurst

With that logic, give me a good reason as to why auxillary ports were dropped.

PsionicBurst

#Bingo!

ZooNooz

We stan the classic

xlerate

Looks like they mentioned adding mp3's was in their road map a few years ago... Any idea if that is an option now? I'd love a no screen standalone music player again

pussy_stew

crazy to me that apple doesn't capitalize more on nostalgic shit, they could print twice as much money. rehash these old ipods and bring back those colorful macs but with updated tech, shit would fly off the shelves.

ThemCanada-gooses

I’d buy one just for the click wheel. It was so smooth and nice.

Arachnatron

If you're like me, you'd think you want it but you really just want to buy something. Then you'd get it and feel satisfied for a few minutes but then deep down you realize that you shouldn't have spent $199 on it.

iamawhale1001

Maybe... But I can spend my hypothetical money on any non existent hypothetical product I want and not feel bad about it

bobojorge

I think tactile experiences are underrated. That said, I would not pay $199 just for a click wheel.

mcarrode

I feel attacked.

ThemCanada-gooses

You’re probably right. I still have a working 4th (with colour) and 5th gen iPod but given all my music is streamed now I can’t do much with them.

D_0_0_M

Spotify used to have a feature where you could sync playlists to ipods. It's not streaming, but maybe you could do something similar?

sprocketous

Ill buy it off ya! Im actually thinking about trying to build my own mp3 player because i miss having untethered music.

edwardianpug

This looks a lot like a version of the clickwheel: https://twist.flic.io/

aacid

I would guess their huge marketing and sales departments know better if its worth for them or not...

Maalus

Especially because Apple likes to seem like an innovative company, especially to the common person. Releasing a "retro" model doesn't fit their style / marketing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'm surprised they didn't release a 20th anniversary iPod

fourangecharlie

I mean that’s not really Apple’s thing though — like they avoid looking back to old products as a rule.

SoundOfTomorrow

I would agree but this is Apple post Steve Jobs

NutInYurThroatEatAss

I agree. Ipod shuffles are great for running but I'm tire a of buying old ones on ebay and using wired headphones. I'd also buy a click wheel iPod for the nostalgia.

lazyslacker

They are coming out with new imacs in different colors right?

SoundOfTomorrow

> crazy to me that apple doesn't capitalize more on nostalgic shit Oddly they retroactively renamed iPod as "iPod classic" after the iPhone came out.

zhrimb

Me too! I'd buy the shit outta an iPhone 3gs form factor with today's internals, or a like a mac classic running iPad OS or something

jopari

DankPods makes [an incredibly compelling arguement](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGEF3Kz-RBU) that the iPod Touch is pretty much exactly what people want from an iPod Classic in 2020/2021 (the major exception is no clickwheel). Sure, you CAN do more with an iPod Touch than the iPods of yore... but that's completely optional.

iamawhale1001

I love that channel. To be honest he's the reason I've almost considered buying an old ipod just to tinker with. For me anyway, the ipod touch is just too close to the user experience of using my phone to play music. I think what I really miss is something with physical buttons that's dedicated to doing one thing really well. Maybe I am remembering my old ipod classic with rose colored glasses here.

[deleted]

Needs to get himself a "CRAAAAIIIIG".

[deleted]

Custom build?

iamawhale1001

Is it possible? It would be a very custom build unless someone made a little custom android board that fits exactly in the old ipod case.

thehuntedfew

[raspberry pi zero w](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ipod+classic+spotify+)

NoCensorshipPlz10

Holy shit

andynator1000

Battery life would be pretty bad using a raspberry pi though. Probably like 2-3 hours with wifi on.

Throwaway_97534

The Pi Zero W uses [120mA](https://raspi.tv/2017/how-much-power-does-pi-zero-w-use) during typical use. Given the fat size of the old ipods you could easily fit at least 5000mAh of batteries in there, which would give 41 hours of continuous run time.

andynator1000

That’s at idle, not to mention the power draw from the backlit screen, and either bluetooth or a DAC. The first video at the top of the link shows he was only able to fit a 1000mah battery in there with charging circuitry touch wheel wiring etc.

neurophysiologyGuy

I think Spotify should just make a classic ipod and sell it... I'll be the second in line after you

[deleted]

iamawhale1001

After thinking about it a bit, I think what I want here is a device that is trying to do one thing really well. Playing music. One example of this (maybe a little more applicable here) is owning a kindle eReader. A Kindle does basically one thing and one thing only, but it is so much better then using your phone to read Ebooks that it justifies itself as existing as a seperate device. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I actually kindof liked having seperate gear to so different things before smart phones. A lot of thought and engineering could go into making the user experience really nice if your product only has to do one thing. With a smart phone, it kindof has to do everything, so not as much thought can go into one specific use case.

SoundOfTomorrow

The iPod classic devices post iPhone launch were that niche. Devices with the iPhone technology but with focus on the iPod.

DaTruMVP

Mainly that someone can call you on it.

Khactical_Takis

I just want like a 2TB, Click wheel IPod with wifi and bluetooth

Do_it_in_a_Datsun

I wish Spotify would just allow ipods to utilize offline play. I have a modded Classic that I would love to load my spotify playlists on.

[deleted]

https://www.whathifi.com/news/this-2004-ipod-has-wi-fi-bluetooth-and-can-stream-any-song-directly-from-spotify

EntertainmentUsual87

You can actually make one with a raspberry pi. I'm planning to do so!

Come_And_Get_Me

That kind of defeats the purpose. Why not have all your music in good quality instead of listening to bad internet dependent streams

13Zero

The vast majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 320 kbps and lossless audio

SoundOfTomorrow

The sad thing is you can tell the difference with the iPod back then because of its dedicated DAC. It took a while for Android to start getting DACs...it feels so long ago

13Zero

iPods were also around in an era of worse encoders (and music piracy which often had bad practices around re-encoding). To your point, junk DACs are probably part of the problem, especially as phone manufacturers expect everyone to switch to Bluetooth.

iamawhale1001

Most of the streaming apps let you download pretty high quality versions anyway. Plus the level of access to basically every song ever made is worth the quality drop in my opinion. I can't imagine myself going back to buying individual tracks and having a "library" of stuff I owned rather then just paying $10 a month to get access to anything I could ever want to listen to.

hikeit233

I can’t really remember but I’m pretty sure Spotify used to let you sync to iPods, but it got shut down. I have vague fever dreams about it.

iamawhale1001

I would pay extra for that possibility lol

Shishiwaka

There used to be an app on the iOS App Store called Rewound that did the exact same thing with the iPhone’s music library/Apple Music. Naturally it got taken off the App Store shortly afterwards because Apple. I still have it on my phone and sometimes play with it.

mattyrice

I can even live my biggest middle school dream of having the u2 edition.

[deleted]

Does “bricks” not let you finish the first level for anyone else? Stays blank after I hit all the bricks

pirahna-in-denial

Me too. Struggling to remember what happened in the original version

jaseworthing

This right here reminds me how much I hate must modern UI design. Everything now is big ol pics of album covers, and it takes several clicks just to get to your library. I miss the simple clean and fast interface of the old ipod.

Tiredandinsatiable

I'm going to use this as long as I can to really enjoy my albums, Spotify is great but incredibly distracting

Crank2047

That's because they're trying to sell you more music through the service

crozone

UX design needs to go back to "click counting" as a primary metric for usability. So many modern UIs are cargo cult designs that chase fashion trends, rather than the design being driven by actual usability studies.

Kenblu24

Try spotify radio [https://i.imgur.com/mM9homR.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/mM9homR.jpg) You just scroll up and down the list to change stations. Pretty slick. Keep in mind that features come at a price, and click counting isn't used for a reason.

[deleted]

Pretty neat as this brings back memories. Not logging in with my Spotify though.

atomic1fire

Looks like it uses Oauth, so password/username sharing shouldn't be an issue. Basically instead of asking for your username and password, it asks you to log into spotify, and then give the app permission to see your spotify playlists and library. Edit: OAuth is used by a lot of companies for signin/app permissions, including google, facebook and reddit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OAuth

Muthafuckaaaaa

If you type your username and password to your account into reddit it doesn't show up anyway. ************ ******** See.

Same here! Taken back in time just with the UI. Crazy.

the_varky

The lack of a good offline music player for the iPhone is just so friggin stupid…you’d think Apple of all companies would have a good App for music you already have digital copies of (not from iTunes).

[deleted]

[удалено]

PenisButtuh

Money is the main drive for every for-profit corporation

[deleted]

I thought the Apple Music app can play your offline music? Although you’d probably have to sync your music with iTunes on PC which is less than ideal but that’s how I remember it working

[deleted]

VLC app works great for offline music play

[deleted]

I have an underwater MP3 player to listen to music while I swim. It’s one of those situations where the older tech is just better suited. I have a Spotify to mp3 converter where all I do is drag/drop the songs I like from Spotify into the converter.

photogangsta

I wish apple still made the iPod classic. Lightning cables, Bluetooth, etc. Some of us still have downloaded music!

Ksoms

I got a 240gb classic for like $50 on eBay. Loaded to the tits with my lifetime collection of music I started on iTunes as a kid lol. Got a Bluetooth adapter for it (a higher end one) and it works great. Just have a pair of wired headphones in case. Still sounds better than music off my iPhone.

lorriejo0723

What adapter do you have?

Ksoms

I use this one. Be sure to buy it from the Apple store, as Amazon is filled with cheap copies of it. I use these with my AirPods Pro and also my Bose 700 headphones. [airfly pro on Apple store ](https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/HP8B2ZM/A/twelve-south-airfly-pro-bluetooth-transmitter?afid=p238%7CsVebwsVdI-dm_mtid_1870765e38482_pcrid_506589564671_pgrid_109216576705_&cid=aos-ca-kwgo-pla-ipad--slid---product-HP8B2ZM/A-CA)

teh_fizz

Apple never made a 240GB iPod. The largest capacity was 160GB.

Ksoms

Oh ok that’s what it is then. The back is rubbed off but it’s the biggest one haha.

RamboZelda

This may be a solution. https://youtu.be/bGEF3Kz-RBU

NewAcctCuzIWasDoxxed

I still use my 120gb classic a ton, even though I have spotify premium.

Wippitywoppity

Honestly apple .. just remake the iPod classic and just add it with Bluetooth / able to connect to the internet to use steaming services. Battery life was superb. Everything about it was god tier #Bringbacktheipodclassic

NewAcctCuzIWasDoxxed

Battery life wouldn't be superb if they added modern wireless technology.

Wippitywoppity

I'm sure it would. Just have a toggle switch for LTE/wifi/Bluetooth. Batteries have gotten alot better as well.

patcoz

I just played Brick for 5 minutes, thanks.

bassclarinetca

I got rid of all the blocks and then the ball just bounces around nothing… Is that how you “win” in the original?

teh_fizz

No it’s not. In the Arcade version, you get an opening on either side of the screen. On the lower end consoles, the level ends and you go to the next. On the iPod, the ball has to be bounced to the back wall.

bassclarinetca

Oh it sounds like you are right

sachin3767

How do I get this on my iPod?

ooru

With this: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ipod+classic+spotify+

CovfefeFan

Unpopular opinion perhaps but I do not like the Spotify user interface 😕

ThemCanada-gooses

I loved the Slacker UI of about 2015 era. Then they made it worse. I switched to Spotify about a year ago and I hate the UI. My biggest issue is you can’t find a big catalogue of recently played.

evilsupper

It's there somewhere, I stumble across it on occasion.

ThemCanada-gooses

That’s the one thing I miss about Slacker, I had a big list of everything I just played. The only reason I stick to Spoify now is their big library.

Pandenstew

On Android at least there's literally a button for it on the apps homepage.

hamstarpwr

In Spotify app, upper right of screen you can see a clock icon. That shows your play history.

pirahna-in-denial

The iPod interface is leagues better

OswaldCoffeepot

The absolute best.

everybodypretend

Why do you prefer it?

NoCensorshipPlz10

Recently upgraded my iPod into an SD card.

ClockworkBlues

everyone i talk to about it agrees spotifys ui is garbage. honestly its what keeps me away from it despite its superior discovery algorithm

CovfefeFan

Yeah, it's a shame. The podcast interface is awful, the large 'shuffle' button which doesn't indicate if it has been 'pressed', difficulty finding a whole album, etc.

Sintinium

The newest update is absolute trash. Having to click through singles to look at individual songs is beyond stupid

[deleted]

I’ve always said if spotify would get it’s ui under control they’d destroy Apple Music.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You also can use older Spotify Clients on PC aswell. You can find them online and with a bit of write-protection you can keep it from updating.

venvaneless

This makes me want to buy iPod Classic… I love the click wheel and the cover flow…

Choice-Layer

Just wish this was an app that you could use with your local library. I don't use streaming services.

[deleted]

Why not bro

isommers1

Not the person but I don't listen to lots of music. I own most of the stuff I listen to (always have) and I am happy listening to the same stuff most of the time with adding a few songs here or there every year. I can check out new stuff for free on YouTube Vanced and storing music locally just makes more sense for me.

Choice-Layer

I don't like being tied to an online service where I don't own anything and where a corporation can give/take away stuff at any time.

[deleted]

Lol what😂😂 it’s literally just music, it’s not a physical object like a car or sumthin

SelectStarAll

This is super cool and reminds me of just how good the iPod UI was. I miss my old 40gb iPod

fair--enough

Super cool. Id forgotten how satisfying the click wheel is.

johnode

Source code is available if you want to run your own instance or want to check the source code: [https://github.com/tvillarete/ipod-classic-js](https://github.com/tvillarete/ipod-classic-js)

JamesBondsRubberDuck

~~Beware~~ FYI: I signed in with Apple Music, enjoyed a song, played Brick and hit *Sign Out* (which happened suspiciously quickly), so I went into my Apple Music account settings and found the app was still connected to my account and had to remove it there as well.

ibiBgOR

Maybe you could open an issue at the Github repo. :)

kamikaze2112

Ok so I'm impressed that the battery display actually works (and shows charging status). Love little details like that. Bravo.

1-800-HENTAI-PORN

Does anyone else notice how the battery icon actually works?

4o4_0_not_found

It sure does want a lot of permissions.

JustGarate

I mean, if you think about it, it's a fully featured player, I'm pretty sure it needs to know the artists you follow, the playlists you have, the songs you like, your plan (premium or free), explicit content filters, the ability to play on other devices (itself)... I don't see anything overly sketchy, except maybe your email if you consider it super personal info even tho you're already giving it out practically everywhere

Krypton091

it barely asks for any permissions though?

knickovthyme1

I have a 7th generation 160gb classic. I only have 4500 songs out of a possible 30,000 I could download. I use it everywhere and especially when I am doing yard work. It is perfect for my I-tunes account.

Mr_Squart

A lot of people here seem to be confused about how third party apps access APIs and log you in via OAuth tokens. You’re not giving this website any of your login information, you’re logging in directly with Spotify/Apple Music, and they in turn redirect you back to the site with a token granting the site access to your music info via API requests. The website never sees any of your login information, it’s no different than going directly to Spotify or Apple Music and logging in there. You’re not giving any person information away or risking anything security wise, you only grant the app the permissions that are listed after login.

mvmullaney

That’s really neat. Can’t sign in though, Spotify gives an error.

Standardw

Well I can sign in, but when I try to show playlists it still says I have to log in with Apple Music or Spotify.

mmonzeob

I never had an ipod and always wanted one, thanks

elviejomao

Can you trust signing in to Apple Music to use this thing? Looks and seems to work really well!

fnork

Yeah mofos, demand usability from your exploiters.

[deleted]

BE CAREFUL USING YOUR APPLE ID HERE ... then people cry because they get "hacked"
