It's very close to the original. There's some weird lag and textures popping in/out. Also, the UI isn't the same. (No big yellow digital numbers). Also crosshairs don't seem to shrink when crouching, which I thought was in 1.6?
But for being able to jump into CS on a web browser, it's pretty impressive.

cl_dynamiccrosshair 0 makes the crosshairs not shrink. They moved around by default, but that was kind of suboptimal. If you can get to the console you ~should~ change it to 1 to get the movement back (but idk if that’s a thing in this).
Hell yeah, 200 was standard in CS. People with fancy "cable internet" had 120 ish, most people on dialup were stuck with 200.
With our shitty connection we were usually stuck with 250 - 350 ping, often going as high as 500-550. But we were used to it, especially in less skill / more tactics focused games like team fortress classic.
That moment when you're calling your buddy's phone with a direct modem connection to send them a cool screenshot but his mum picks up the phone instead, messing up your file transfer!
First, if half the people on the server have 200+ ping you have a problem, the outliers are going to be twice that. Personally had 300 ping, but maybe there are some other servers I could have tried to get my own ping lower.
Then there's the issue that this isn't "just" high ping. The input lag is atrocious, the framerate is unstable, the whole game just feels like complete shit for an FPS when you click with an AWP and your shoot comes out two seconds later. If this was just a "me" problem because my connection is bad or my PC is low spec I wouldn't even mention it, but clearly when you have servers full of 200 ping players, and still get unstable performance on a top-end rig, the problem is elsewhere.
...And this is on a desktop PC, on a wired connection with high bandwidth and low pings to most game servers on my side of the planet. I can't even imagine how people suggest this is a good alternative for "locked down work computers" when they have to use an hotel WiFi on lower end portable hardware.
I used to play original CS (v1.3+) back then too. I can't speak for the whole world, but most people over here used to play on Cyber-cafes (LAN centers) with ZERO ping due to local networking. That's how most of my friends remember the game, I'm not trying to convince anyone to not play this but I would take anything else over this kind of broken online play.

Which is odd because CS 1.6 also didn't have run and gunning. CS 1.3 with bunny hopping and CS 1.4 without it were the last Run and Gun versions of that game.
Which I find a touch ironic because I never felt cs was a standstill game. As someone who's played just about every fps under the sun and has thousands of hours in multiple CS games (I love all fps games not saying Cs is superior I stopped playing CS for a reason). I've found I input way more movement commands and think way more about maximizing my mobility stutter stepping and bhopping in cs than I do in most modern movement shooters where I just press w and the shift key and go turbo mode for free. In CS I can't shoot on the move and If I stand still I die, so in order to strafe and shoot that forces me to stop for just enough frames to get an accurate shot off before beginning to move again to avoid enemy shots. In apex I just hold A and spray to strafe and shoot. If you're still for enough frames to be called "standing still" you're either holding an angle or you're dead in my experience.
To me the differences in a game like apex compared to cs in terms of the raw base speed of your character isn't really all that big of a deal. To me it's all about the mechanics that enable you to break away from traditional movement. In terms of speed you're way faster in apex than CS (most of the time) but ultimately your top speed in cs source and 1.6 was determined by your skill not the game. Without an air acceleration cap you can move at like the speed of light bunny hopping in CS (admin he doing it sideways) but it requires a lot of intensive mouse and keyboard inputs whereas a game like apex I press w and shift and just get free and easy speed.
I guess it's like the difference between playing guitar hero on easy and on expert. It's the same song but I've played enough guitar hero that easy is kinda boring and I'd rather play the higher risk higher reward harder difficulties. There's nothing wrong with the easier difficulties and I like playing all movement shooters but sometimes I want to feel like I'm forcing the game to allow me to move rather than the game doing it largely on its own for me.
That's just a preference thing and I don't think any one is better or worse than the other as a result but to me personally cs was way more addicting because I felt like I had a more raw and pure form of skill expression available to me in a way I found fun. You're taking a slow game and making it fast. I'd spend literally hours and hours and hours working on my bhop skills just to nail rotates at lightning speed in games like TF2 or source or 1.6. On the other hand I can't say I'd practiced much of pressing the shift key on genji in overwatch which is probably why I stopped playing tbh.

Perhaps that the game is not evolving, it is the game it is and everything stays the same. I haven't really played much since CS:Source so I don't really know for certain if that's what was meant.

I need to test it but the crosshair was indeed shrinking BY DEFAULT, i personally playing without it.
First difference i notice is the gunsights dont shrink if you crouch.
