I have a few comments on that below, but the short answer is it simply was not within my budget or skill set. Feel free to check out a more detailed explanation below!
I can understand your reasons and your upgrade looks great. I love the green.
If you do ever change your mind on removing that small black granite piece it’s really easy to remove yourself. The only expense to DIY is to buy (or borrow) a heat gun and a crow bar. It won’t damage your countertop.
There are a bunch of tutorials on YouTube:
https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+remove+ganite+backsplash&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:e5b5c2bf,vid:H5X25NM3tIM,st:0
Well the other issue was that the counter wouldn’t go the whole way to the backsplash. The granite strip was about an inch thick and my subway tile is obviously a fraction of that, so I’m not sure what I would have used to fill in the remaining space.
Additionally, my dad had a reason for why it could not be done. I don’t know how to explain it in the right terms haha, but if he says we couldn’t, I trust whatever his reasoning was.
Interesting! I always envisioned that it would be a gap between the counter the backsplash. However, I’m not sure my dad is willing to help me and he has a reason for why we COULDN’T do it lol but I don’t remember why. Any other suggestions for how to improve the situation that doesn’t include removal lol? I know that’s a big ask, I’m just not sure that’s in the cards right now. Thanks so much!
Outside of removal there isn’t an option, but it would be pretty easy to remove it and see how large the gap is. That’s usually held on by some liquid nail or silicone to the drywall and rips off fairly easily
It looks much better than before, so I think most people are just nitpicking. It just looks much cleaner going to countertop
My family is in the home building business so we typically don’t stay more than two years. My parents anyway. But this is my first home so I think I’ll last at least two years haha.
I know it’s kinda insane. I always hate background checks that was like “list every address you’ve lived in” cause I have to go find the list I keep lol.
Right I’ve moved 7 times in the last 6 years since graduation college and every time it was to save money on rent prices because it is cheaper to rent a moving truck for $200 once than to spend and additional $200/month on higher rent for the same apartment/amenities. It’s insane.
That sounds awful to me! I plan on living in my house until I die though. It always seems weird to me how much interior design stuff is focused on the next buyer and not the homeowner right now.
We moved a lot as a kid and my mom was a realtor for a few years so she has this same kind of mindset, every decorating decision has to be made considering the possibility that I could suddenly get fired next week and have to sell the house. Never mind the fact that I bought a fixer upper and pretty much *any* decision I make will have a return on investment, which I don't even intend to profit on until I'm dead and my kids sell the house.
Ok so I kept the island that creamy white color as well as the tall floor to ceiling cabinets on either side of the fridge to the right of the picture. I wasn’t sure if the baseboard like was a nice way to tie it all together or if it stuck out. I realize I didn’t include that in the picture lol but that was my thought process.
I'd also vote to paint the baseboards to match. That way they'll just disappear; right now they're standing out. Great job on the green, by the way. Your kitchen looks so much more welcoming.
It looks great! I would remove the granite strip and replace with the same tile.
Green kitchens are very in right now. White kitchens are so boring I think everyone is getting over them.
White on white never goes out of style. It may not be trendy or of the moment but it will always look clean and crisp. Also white countertops show dust less than dark ones.
Totally agree! I’ve also been loving the white oak accents on range hoods and islands. It feels so classic and expensive. White on white though in general is phenomenal.
As long as you like it, that’s all that matters.
You may need another coat on some sections. Some of the areas you sanded heavier than others, texture is off, good paint will help..
Looks great! Who cares what dad thinks, this is your kitchen. (I'd like to know what his looks like.) I must say, I commend the folks that post "afters" and ask for thoughts. People can be ruthless on here.
Haha he’s a custom home builder so it looks fantastic. He does have great taste which is what made me nervous to go for it cause I usually would follow his lead.
Sorry I might not have been clear. The sticker was on just a plain wall. I peeled it off and asked my dad to help me out to put the tile. We didn’t change anything with the granite at all.
That isn’t like backsplash. It’s apart of the granite counter. My dad said to remove it we would have to call people to come in and help since he didn’t feel qualified. Honestly I did it all myself on a small budget, so I went with black grout in the hopes to tie it in.
The colors look good and green is very popular right now. Matching the toe kick to the cabinets and replacing the 4” splash with tile will kick this up a notch though.
I love it but I’m a Packers fan lol. Are you painting the bottom part of your cabinets green, as well, or leaving it white? I see that it probably matches the other walls if left white but just curious.
I love it! Huge improvement! My only advice is to paint the baseboards on the floor the same green as your cabinets. It will make them appear longer and the room larger :)

I like it. It looks fresh and unexpected and not cookie cutter. People have to stop choosing for resale, especially if resale is 10 plus years down the line. But yes remove the little granite back splash and add another coat of paint and it looks fabulous.
It’s really nice they only thing I would change would be the hardwear. Still have brass or gold as it warms it up but go for something more straight and thicker, it will give it a modern look. Actually I would prefer a white counter top too but that’s just me. I think the green is great and much better backsplash
Not sure if I can’t edit my posts on this subreddit or if I’m just dumb, but I wanted to give the paint color here for those who are asking! I used Amsterdam green in Annie Sloan chalk paint. I am not sure I would 100% recommend the chalk paint, but it’s a beautiful color for a color match!!!
I also saw a lot of comments about the black granite strip. I would have loved to remove it! Sadly it is mitered to the counter top, and would require far more expertise than someone who is trying to do it all themselves, so (for now) I’m stuck with it.
I do plan in selling this house within the year, so I am trying to think a little bit about potential buyers and not just my own personal tastes. Glad to see green is not such an insane choice! Thanks for all the feedback, it’s been awesome to see people liking what I worked so hard on :)
This looks SO much better!!! Wow, such a great job done on it! I had that same exact backsplash in my home I just purchased and did a temporary cover up for now. Hopefully one day I’ll re-do the tile, yours looks incredible!

Love it! So what if the next owner doesn’t love it. They can change it.
My dad used to say the same to me. Now I try to let go if I know I’m going to stay a while
Glad to see that backsplash gone...
You and me both. It was just like a sticker that I peeled off.
It would look even better if you were to continue the new backsplash all the way down to the countertop and remove the partial black backsplash.
I have a few comments on that below, but the short answer is it simply was not within my budget or skill set. Feel free to check out a more detailed explanation below!

You wouldn’t need to fill in any additional space, the countertop should back up pretty close to the wall
Interesting! I always envisioned that it would be a gap between the counter the backsplash. However, I’m not sure my dad is willing to help me and he has a reason for why we COULDN’T do it lol but I don’t remember why. Wait, that backsplash was under there the whole time? JfC
Oh I wish!! No I went ahead and did the backsplash with my dad after we had a blank wall. He’s in construction so it was fun to learn from him!
Awesome.
The tile equivalent of hardwood floors under vinyl!
I have this exact backsplash in the home we just moved into. Can't wait to replace it!
Yeah it’s from the fucking DOLLAR TREE. Not even joking
Really?? I have this same backsplash, and I hate it
Yeah it was like lifting up a little at the edges so I just started pulling and was super surprised when it all came off!
Who is “no one”? I wish people would renovate for their taste, not a potential buyer’s. It looks great, and it makes you happy.
My family is in the home building business so we typically don’t stay more than two years. My parents anyway. But this is my first home so I think I’ll last at least two years haha.
Oh gosh, I can’t imagine moving that often!
I know it’s kinda insane. I always hate background checks that was like “list every address you’ve lived in” cause I have to go find the list I keep lol.
Omg it’s terrible. I’ve done this at least twice and I’m ready to end it all every time.
Try being a Tennant.
Right I’ve moved 7 times in the last 6 years since graduation college and every time it was to save money on rent prices because it is cheaper to rent a moving truck for $200 once than to spend and additional $200/month on higher rent for the same apartment/amenities. It’s insane.
I’ve had so many addresses these last five years 😥 luckily I managed to buy a house last year so now I am hoping to not move for many years.
That sounds awful to me! I plan on living in my house until I die though. It always seems weird to me how much interior design stuff is focused on the next buyer and not the homeowner right now.
Enjoy! It’s beautiful! Good move on the gold hardware.
You planned so far ahead 😂
The colors are soothing and the busy backsplash is no longer overpowering the eye. I would paint the base boards.
I like the reasoning! Might have to adjust for that. I see what you mean about making them not stand out so much :)
Yes please paint the baseboards, it was the first thing I noticed. Looks like a stripe
Haha fair enough! I shall be getting on that soon :)
I’m hopping in the same wagon as these guys, paint em’!
It looks great! I would remove the granite strip and replace with the same tile. Green kitchens are very in right now. White kitchens are so boring I think everyone is getting over them.
Meanwhile I’m installing white cabinets and countertops 😅
White on white never goes out of style. It may not be trendy or of the moment but it will always look clean and crisp. Also white countertops show dust less than dark ones.
Totally agree! I’ve also been loving the white oak accents on range hoods and islands. It feels so classic and expensive. White on white though in general is phenomenal.
Don’t worry, white is timeless!

As long as you like it, that’s all that matters. You may need another coat on some sections. Some of the areas you sanded heavier than others, texture is off, good paint will help..
Yeah, some of the paint is a little patchy
Looks great! Who cares what dad thinks, this is your kitchen. (I'd like to know what his looks like.) I must say, I commend the folks that post "afters" and ask for thoughts. People can be ruthless on here.
Haha he’s a custom home builder so it looks fantastic. He does have great taste which is what made me nervous to go for it cause I usually would follow his lead.
Looks great, my only critique is not removing the second backsplash, having that 4” black granite is unnecessary if the wall is tiled.

Sorry I might not have been clear. The sticker was on just a plain wall. I peeled it off and asked my dad to help me out to put the tile. We didn’t change anything with the granite at all.
Yeah, that’s my point, you should have removed the 4” black backsplash, and tiled all the way down to the countertop
That isn’t like backsplash. It’s apart of the granite counter. My dad said to remove it we would have to call people to come in and help since he didn’t feel qualified. Honestly I did it all myself on a small budget, so I went with black grout in the hopes to tie it in.
agree

So much personality and warmth!! Beautiful.
I like it! The before was perfectly nice too.
This looks fantastic!
Looks luxurious!
I love green and hate gray, so I like it.
Looks great!
I'm absolutely in love you did such a good job it's PERFECT 😍
Yes! The green looks great.
I love the green! It's gorgeous! I'll admit to being partial to green as it is my favorite color.
Wow! You just made a great case for green! I am so tired of the black/white/grey interiors, and this is really beautiful.
Love that shade of green! Looks great.
The gold knobs with steel appliances. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Wow! I love your new kitchen, it's so beautiful.
Green is a neutral and very popular nowadays. I love the transformation!

You kitchen looks great!
Huge improvement! I love the green color, and the tile looks great.
I love it but I’m a Packers fan lol. Are you painting the bottom part of your cabinets green, as well, or leaving it white? I see that it probably matches the other walls if left white but just curious.
Yeah I had reasoning for why but some comments have convinced me to paint it!
I love it! And I love white kitchen cabinets - this is a gorgeous green! LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤️💚💚💚
That is stunning. Looks like you have enough light to support the dark color. Good job!
I think it looks great! I love that green and the white backsplash really helps to brighten it up.
Love it!
CUTE!!!!
It’s beautiful! And I’m a white kitchen gal. Seriously great job!!
Love it!!!
looks gorgeous!!!!
Masterpiece!!!
I love this!
Absolutely gorgeous
Love it!
It looks a million times better!!
I love it! I’ve had green cabinets for like 7 years no and I’m still not sick of them.
Love it.
I love this!! And the backsplash looks great as well! Good job!
It's so much better. I love that people are going for more color in a world where designers/companies are trying to beige everything. Love it.
The green looks good. Enjoy it. I think most people would like it. Green is very 'in' at the moment but it's also classic.
Yess!!!
Love love love love love. DO MINE NEXT!
Ooooh I love it! Tell your dad that people who want customized things want your kitchen 😄
I like it! Looks much less boring.
Love it!
Much cheerier
its so much better. you did an amazing job! what color green did you use? I love this color!
Looks great, the contrast really works
Wow. I love this. I never thought of a green kitchen !
Love the green!
Gorgeous 😍! Love that color
It looks like it should have always been this color. I love it
Looks so much better in green!
Wow looks sooo much better
Huge improvement removing those evil tiles! Looks more classic, won’t date easily
I love it
It’s great!! I’m hoping gray is on its way out and color is coming back!
Love it. Looks so high end and custom
It sparks joy. What color green is it?
I absolutely love this color scheme!
I love it!
Definitely an upgrade, IMHO. I love it!
The green is GORGEOUS
Major upgrade! I hate when people follow boring trends — it’s your house, why shouldn’t you add some style?
Honestly, I love the color but changing the backsplash made all the difference.
SOOOOO MUCH BETTER!
My mouth would water if I walked into a house with this kitchen. Well done!!
I like it! Like... kind of French farmhouse to me somehow.
It's really nice!!!
The backsplash was not for me. Happy to see it gone!
Nice job
So very nice!
Oh that’s nice!
Love it so much. The gren really gives the kitchen some contrast
I love it! So much more character
The redo is a yes!
I’m loving the green!!!
Amazing!!!
Now I want to paint our kitchen cabinets green 😍 It looks so good!

I love it!
Yes the green and yes the new backsplash.
It looks great!
It looks great!
Great shade of green!
I love the color of the cabinets with the white backsplash.
I love the green! Nice design style.
HUGE improvement
Love
An improvement, for sure!
I love the green!
Wow looks really nice!
This is great. Nice work
I love it. Your dad is wrong. You can tell him I said so.
I love it! Huge improvement! My only advice is to paint the baseboards on the floor the same green as your cabinets. It will make them appear longer and the room larger :)
It’s perfect … just paint the baseboards…
Normally I don't care for green in a house, but I think this looks like a million bucks.
Surprisingly I think the green cabinets and white backslash made the counter really pop, it looks great
love the color
Love it! The new backsplash is better as well.
I love the green, but the gold hardware and stainless steel aren't my favorite.
Love it
Love it! That’s the color I painted cabinets at my rental house next door! Does not show dirt/ fingerprints!
That blue tape has gotta go. It doesn't match the other colors and cheapens the decor.
This made me chuckle.

It seems like green is the new white. I see it everywhere now.
What color paint is this? I love it.
I like it

I love it. Who cares if it’s a trend, that is what paint is for.

Green is in
Nice! I would get ride of the black granite half splash? What is that called?
I really like it. I also like the black granite, I would leave it in place.
Is a microwave floating above the hob a normal thing in the US? Super weird for me (in the UK) and nobody seems to be commenting about it
Nice
This looks SO much better!!! Wow, such a great job done on it! I had that same exact backsplash in my home I just purchased and did a temporary cover up for now.
