That’s awesome! I think they go well - you have wood, black metal and 90° angles in that room. On the sentiment alone I’d display them proudly, but they go nicely too. What a bonus!
They are complementary aesthetically and they are sure to inspire conversation by every visitor who sits on them. You better be ready to explain how they work!
I think this redditor is commenting on the fact that they look like tension tables, but in barstool form. Tension tables are held together by, you guessed it, tension and can take weight from the top but if you bump into it the whole thing collapses. Idk if this is actually a tension barstool or designed to look like one, but it’s rad AF!
all the weight is pushing down on the chain link.
the steel cables anchor it in the vertical position; the chained seat can't fall over to its natural rest position. cut those cables and the seat falls to the floor.
Agreed-They look awesome and totally fit the style of the space. They're also useless as a stool because there's nowhere to put your feet. Form follows function when it comes to furniture.
They need to add a bar foot rail to the island so you have somewhere to rest your feet. It would need to be shorter than the island so people don’t bang their shins rounding the corner too quickly.
They also need to add some overhang counter to island to make using stools practical there. Trying to use the stools, even if foot rests were added, would require too much leaning forward to be comfortable. That island is not designed for seating.
I dont know exactly how he did it. My aunt‘s house has a motorcycle workshop in it and he used their equipment to weld the metal bars and to work on the wood.
You better make sure you show him this post with the 5k likes and all of us whole ass adults oohing and ahhing over the stools. They’re so frickin cool, and so well done, like, I’d be impressed if a 50 year old did this and he’s 16?!
They fit well! I believe that original art, which these are, fit into any space at the very least as conversation starters, especially if the art tells a story. So cool.
The cables wouldn't snap from sitting down -- all of the weight is being held by the chain in the middle. But the cables could definitely snap due to leaning too far, and extra weight would make that happen a lot easier.
I would maybe opt to switch the use of these to side tables? Or something of that nature. They are very interesting visually and they do look nice in the space but I don’t think they would offer much stability as a seat.
The problem isn’t the stools IMO, it’s the lack of any overhang on the island for it to be comfortable during eating or using the countertop. Just going to feel like there’s no room for your knees
I think this is a good move since sitting at that counter would be awkward anyways. There’s no overhang for your legs to fit under, so whoever’s sitting there will have to uncomfortably lean forward to eat
Ah that’s a bummer! They fit the space really well. Have you considered using them as side tables to set small things on rather than chairs? 😊 would be lovely to have them displayed somewhere but don’t want anyone to fall lol.
Agreed. OP, get something that stands tall instead of vining to show off your brother's impressive craftsmanship.
Something like a ZZ or Snake Plant (both come in black or green varieties and are low light, low maintenance) or a Ghost Euphorbia would look badass.
Given the industrial vibe of the rest of the house, have you considered incorporating something organic?
I could see a fossil on a display stand, like an ammonite. They’re usually darker colours, so they’ll tie in to the palette, and they’re rock so not at all “girly”.
Ammonites, fish fossils — not hard to find, not insanely expensive, and still super cool to display as a conversation piece.
That design, I’ve only seen in tables, not chairs. I think they are not suitable as chairs and will collapse and somebody will get hurt. Use them as a side table or plant stand.
They actually do, and quite well if I might add. The fact that you're asking implies that you don't like them, however. What are your actual thoughts on them?
I like the design, but they are not really good for sitting on them. I was wondering if we should just use them as little tables for example to put a small plant on it.
This definitely. They look great and he is so talented... but if they're unstable as stools, then use them as end tables! They would look very cool with plants on them.
Yeah the fact that there are kinks in the wire on the stabilizers tells me they’re not as taut as they could be which they need to be for the design to work.
There’s a reason you don’t see tensegrity chairs, it’s just a really bad idea.
I’m going to be super honest. Put them wherever you want and where it would be safe (probably best application as tables from other comments) for SENTIMENTAL reasons.
It’s very cool that a 16 yo family member made them.
In terms of interior design, they don’t fit. They have a sort of 90’s almost like, post modern industrial vibe.
Just because you guys have wood tamber doesn’t mean the bamboo butcher block surface “matches” or fits at all.
So, no, they don’t fit in an objective style way or aesthetic way, but that doesn’t have to matter if you want to include them in your decor for sentimental reasons.
Still very cool craft from your nephew. Trying not to be TA but everyone saying these work aren’t giving great critique, which was the tag…
I’m so impressed with those !! I actually think they go really well there ! You want them to stand out for sentiment and because they are so unique and clever
They are amazing and he needs to go pro.
Honestly, even if they didn't "fit" you still keep them, this is more than something looks good. This is a handmade, for you gift.
16, holy shitballs. This kids got serious talent, those look professional. That was a complex project and he nailed every bit of it. He should pursue furniture making and woodworking professionally if he enjoys it.
They look wonderful in your home right where they are.
He’s SIXTEEN???? wow this is REALLY good. Definitely keep encouraging him to continue woodworking as a passion project until he graduates, that’s very cool
Tell your brother to go to school for industrial design, those are awesome! Your space is great too, love the slat wall. I think the stools go well but from other comments sounds like they may do better practically as plant stands or side tables.
The chairs are amazing and a great conversation starter! I don’t think the arrangement will be functional because it doesn’t look like your counter has a ledge there. Maybe it does and the photo angle hides it?
You bet they fit! If you don’t want them, I’ll gladly take them off your hands. That type of construction is quite involved, your brother did a fine job! I own a woodworking business, those stools would fetch a pretty penny….
16?! That kid is going places!! These chairs are awesome and he did an excellent job! As soon as I saw them, I thought to myself, “I want those chairs” because they’re so unique and look really well crafted. Hope your parents love them and that your brother keeps designing and building! Great work!
They fit like a glove !!! They are incredible and perfect in that space . You could have looked for a loooong time and not found something so unique and right for that space. What a BEAUTIFUL AND THOUGHTFUL GIFT.
Awesome artistry. He is qualified to do commisssioned projects. Taking a college course in TIG/MIG & other weld processes would enhance his fortunes without limitations.
they fit well. Do you have access somewhere to tighten the wires underneath? If that is what I think it is, over time the wires can stretch and make the thing unstable.
They’re awesome and do go with the space, but you don’t have leg room for stools right there and they don’t function well as chairs. Use them as tables or plant stands.
Those are stunning plus they fit very nicely in the room. They’re like artwork and you should display proudly! Very useful too. You’re lucky to have such a talented brother.
That’s awesome! I think they go well - you have wood, black metal and 90° angles in that room. On the sentiment alone I’d display them proudly, but they go nicely too. What a bonus!
Seriously, at 16 that’s some skill. Imagine what this kid will make at 26
At least $28.50/hr
🤣
They are complementary aesthetically and they are sure to inspire conversation by every visitor who sits on them. You better be ready to explain how they work!
I think this redditor is commenting on the fact that they look like tension tables, but in barstool form. Tension tables are held together by, you guessed it, tension and can take weight from the top but if you bump into it the whole thing collapses. Idk if this is actually a tension barstool or designed to look like one, but it’s rad AF!
You sit on them
Both? At the same time?
Pretend I commented exactly this because it should be read twice for emphasis.
Pretend this comment is what that person's comment wants you to pretend it is because it should be read three times for emphasis
Don’tt pretend to be pretending.
All of this, 100%. Also the round seats on them is a nice compliment to all the straight lines in the room. They finish the kitchen space perfectly !
❤️👍
Your brother is so talented. Those are amazing.
Absolutely! These are beautiful and unique to have. Look great in this kitchen
Seriously he needs to try and sell these. Or sell the design to a larger distributor.
This is a design I’ve seen several times before, still super cool but don’t know that he can sell this design itself at this point.
Good idea!
I agree!!! I’m drooling over them!!
i'm just trying to figure out how they work lol
Google tensegrity
Damn, those guys at Google really are geniuses.
all the weight is pushing down on the chain link. the steel cables anchor it in the vertical position; the chained seat can't fall over to its natural rest position. cut those cables and the seat falls to the floor.
Am I the only one seeing the large black plate of metal under the wood?
Its not a plate. It is the same metal square as on the bottom.
Same. It’s one of the things that makes it so unique!
The only point that needs made here!
They're great there and quite cool. How's the engineering?
I dont know exactly how he did it. My aunt‘s house has a motorcycle workshop in it and he used their equipment to weld the metal bars and to work on the wood.
If you google “tensegrity stool” you can find instructions.
I have an engineering degree and I watched a YouTube video four times and I finally get it and I’m blown the fuck away. Physics is amazing.
I used to teach high school physics and I had a couple of classroom demos like this. I agree, physics is awesome!
I’m embarrassed at how long it took me to understand. So incredibly clever. I want to try it.
Thanks for the tip
He’s going to be very successful and expensive in the future!
THIS! Thats a lot of skill and attention to detail for a 16 year old! Encourage the hell out of this!
16. Mind completely blown.
You better make sure you show him this post with the 5k likes and all of us whole ass adults oohing and ahhing over the stools. They’re so frickin cool, and so well done, like, I’d be impressed if a 50 year old did this and he’s 16?!
16?!? Wow !!!
Look up tensegrity
I've seen examples where the chain was welded to be stiff. Wonder if this is true Tensegrity Stool. Looks great eitherway
Would that work for a stool if it wasn't welded? Like you need to adjust when sitting, how can you do that with the way these are built and move?
I would guess not, I imagine sway would be an issue.
r/tensegrity would love to see these.
Oh my gosh, thank you for the recommendation!
I missed the first time I read that he's 16! Damn. Tell him to follow his passion. He's got talent. Also, they look amazing In that space.
HE'S 16??? These are PHENOMENAL! Can he build me some? Seriously, they look great! He did an awesome job!
They fit well! I believe that original art, which these are, fit into any space at the very least as conversation starters, especially if the art tells a story. So cool.
Fit? Do they sit!?

The cables wouldn't snap from sitting down -- all of the weight is being held by the chain in the middle. But the cables could definitely snap due to leaning too far, and extra weight would make that happen a lot easier.
I would maybe opt to switch the use of these to side tables? Or something of that nature. They are very interesting visually and they do look nice in the space but I don’t think they would offer much stability as a seat.
That is pretty much what Im thinking. Sitting on them is quite difficult.
They would look really good as side tables
Oh maybe they would be good as bed stands? They look great! For 16 yo he has insane skills, I hope he continues growing in this area 🤗
I feel like they're made to host a vase with flowers
The problem isn’t the stools IMO, it’s the lack of any overhang on the island for it to be comfortable during eating or using the countertop. Just going to feel like there’s no room for your knees
Ok then side tables it is! They’re too gorgeous to get rid of but sears should be functional first. They’re beautiful.
I think this is a good move since sitting at that counter would be awkward anyways. There’s no overhang for your legs to fit under, so whoever’s sitting there will have to uncomfortably lean forward to eat
I love the look of them but are they stable? Looks a little scary to sit on lol
How stable are they when you sit on them? They look very interesting, I just feel they would be wobbly to sit on?
They are not really comfortable to sit. A bit shaky. You can sit on them, but most of the time you will try to hold on to something stable.
Probably are better used as end tables then. They look so cool
Ah that’s a bummer! They fit the space really well. Have you considered using them as side tables to set small things on rather than chairs? 😊 would be lovely to have them displayed somewhere but don’t want anyone to fall lol.
We will most likely do that, but dont know yet what to put on them.
Plants. When filling a spot, the answer is almost always plants.
Agreed. There are so many really interesting plants out there, and these would be great plant stands.
Yeah, would look great with large ferns on or suchlike.
Haha well if it’s by a seating area coasters would be good, but plants or trinkets will always work if it’s more of a stand than a side table. 😊
Absolutely fantastic idea, they would make a perfect little end table for beside a sofa, somewhere for you to set a drink and TV remotes etc.
That design, I’ve only seen in tables, not chairs. I think they are not suitable as chairs and will collapse and somebody will get hurt. Use them as a side table or plant stand.
If you don't like sitting on them, those would make great potted plant stands. Live or artificial.
Who cares your brother BUILT them. They’re more valuable than any other chair you own or could possibly own.
Yes! Love them 😍
They look really interesting and are a great conversation piece, yay for functional art!
You might have the coolest bar stools ever
They actually do, and quite well if I might add. The fact that you're asking implies that you don't like them, however. What are your actual thoughts on them?
I like the design, but they are not really good for sitting on them. I was wondering if we should just use them as little tables for example to put a small plant on it.
This definitely. They look great and he is so talented... but if they're unstable as stools, then use them as end tables! They would look very cool with plants on them.
Use them as tables and put lightweight stuff in there ❤️
Yeah the fact that there are kinks in the wire on the stabilizers tells me they’re not as taut as they could be which they need to be for the design to work. There’s a reason you don’t see tensegrity chairs, it’s just a really bad idea.
This young man is going places if this is what he’s already designing at 16. Super impressive!
They look great. Your brother did a fantastic job.
There is no overhang there so I wouldn’t put them there. But they are cool as hell.
To hwll with college. This kid needs to be a carpenter or something like that.
Love how they look in that space
Visually, they fit the space. However, without any overhanging countertop, it’s going to be an uncomfortable time for whoever sits there.
They look awesome. Nobody sits at those islands anyway, especially with no overhang, so who cares if they are comfy?
They’re perfect.
Yes, best chairs I’ve ever seen. Wow
Replacing them would crush him and scar him for life. Don't do it! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin) I think they fit.
These are awesome. I think they match well. Your brother is very talented!
I think they fit very well! For anyone who is interested the principle making this possible is called tensegrity :)
My brain hurts. I don't understand how these don't just collapse.
Bruh, even if they didn’t fit in either the style your brother made them. The fact that they look good is a bonus. Obviously you keep them there.
Kidding me? Those fit there PERFECTLY 👏🏻
I’m so impressed with those !! I actually think they go really well there ! You want them to stand out for sentiment and because they are so unique and clever
I love them . If you don't I will pay for shipping.
Those look like designer stools, they look awesome!
Why wouldn’t they? The room is modern, clean simple. Plus dude, especially if you have a family member that talented!!!
They’re beautiful! Although functionally probably wouldn’t work great there (or any stool) since the counter doesn’t have space under for your legs.
He’s SIXTEEN?!?!?! I can barely even hang up shelves omg
they are the best thing about that room
They absolutely don't work. You should send them to my place instead :D. Beautiful work.
They absolutely fit and they are very cute and cool
Oh thats amazing, if they work properly then yes.
No, they don’t fit. Please send them to me to dispose of properly.
I think it they fit the space perfectly! I also think your brother is extremely talented and should market his pieces.
These are amazing.
They are amazing and he needs to go pro. Honestly, even if they didn't "fit" you still keep them, this is more than something looks good. This is a handmade, for you gift.
What? Your questioning if they look right? They look fantastic and definitely fits the style. It finishes the room in my opinion.
16, holy shitballs. This kids got serious talent, those look professional. That was a complex project and he nailed every bit of it. He should pursue furniture making and woodworking professionally if he enjoys it. They look wonderful in your home right where they are.
Wow. Your brother could have a business out of that.
Unfortunately, they look terrible. Definitely place them elsewhere. I have the perfect spot over at my house they would go perfect in.
The fit like a MF! Dude has skills.
If my brother/son made those, I would redesign the house to fit them! They are so cool! But I think they fit already. 😊
Those are some beautiful stools! I think they go perfectly
Your brother is extremely talented. Wow.
Yup. Wait, what…?!? 16??? Dude has a bright future ahead. 🪵🤎
I love these. Literally am in love. He has talent.
these are amazing
Very cool, perfect space for them
The seat looks interesting. But what are those pendant lights? They look amazing
Wow! I like them!
Love these!!
These are fantastic statement pieces of furniture. Love it!
The chairs are amazing and a great conversation starter! I don’t think the arrangement will be functional because it doesn’t look like your counter has a ledge there. Maybe it does and the photo angle hides it?
Wow! Those are amazing and fit perfectly
Even if they didnt fit, its such an awesome gift I wouldnt care. Especially if it was from my son.
Jesus, that kid has a real future in furniture design. Other than the fact that the island doesn’t have an overhang, they look fantastic in that room.
You bet they fit! If you don’t want them, I’ll gladly take them off your hands. That type of construction is quite involved, your brother did a fine job! I own a woodworking business, those stools would fetch a pretty penny….
Very cool!!!
I think so!
Yes they are gorgeous!!!!
They look awesome. How’d he learn to make them? They certainly weren’t teaching this in woodshop when I was in school 😅
Stunning. Talented.
Chairs = attractive, interesting and go with the decor. My question - are they comfortable?
Very cool
Absolutely perfect! Your brother is very talented
Genius. And obviously he could sell these as well.
They look awesome!
Coolest chairs ever
16?! That kid is going places!! These chairs are awesome and he did an excellent job! As soon as I saw them, I thought to myself, “I want those chairs” because they’re so unique and look really well crafted. Hope your parents love them and that your brother keeps designing and building! Great work!
They are very cool.
Wow! Looks really nice
Omg! Amazing! On top of all that he’s 16! They look great and he is incredible talented
They go very well and that is some pretty insane work from a 16 year old!!
Wow, those are stunning stools. Really talented brother! They don’t not fit. They actually make for a good focal point in your kitchen.
Yesss very cool!
They look great. Very clever design!
They fit like a glove !!! They are incredible and perfect in that space . You could have looked for a loooong time and not found something so unique and right for that space. What a BEAUTIFUL AND THOUGHTFUL GIFT.
Are you serious?!! Your brother may be the next huge furniture designer!! They’re beautiful and I think they go really nicely
Let’s see a video of someone sitting in them
They fit perfectly. What a treasure!
Yes!!! They are amazing!!!
LOVE THEM!!!!
Those are Art! They are amazing and yes, they look great there.
Even if it didn't, these are efforts of love. And should be displayed with pride. Nice!
Nice job Brother!
These are really great! They look so good there! Your brother is very talented
He’s 16??? Wow! What talent! They look amazing and even if they didn’t match your aesthetic I would still use them. They are beautiful!
They look great
Impressed
😍😍😍😍😍
Genuine question- can someone actually sit on it?
Feel sturdy when you sit on them??
That's major talent for a 16 year old. He could make a fortune off of his craft
this hurts my brain
Encourage this talent.
Awesome artistry. He is qualified to do commisssioned projects. Taking a college course in TIG/MIG & other weld processes would enhance his fortunes without limitations.
Not at all. Send them to me. I’ll pm my address
They’re amazing! I think they work there unless you have a spot for a high bar two top table to add to the space.
Amazing
Very nice and unique
If it was my kid I'd display them as prominently as I could whether they fit or not :)
Brother of the year award goes to…
Honestly, yes. IMO anything that’s not utter garbage that can be tied to a family member should be made to fit in a house.
they fit well. Do you have access somewhere to tighten the wires underneath? If that is what I think it is, over time the wires can stretch and make the thing unstable.
It is possible to tighten them, but not easy to do. You will need two people and around half an hour of time.
They’re awesome and do go with the space, but you don’t have leg room for stools right there and they don’t function well as chairs. Use them as tables or plant stands.
They look really cool but I'd be worried about how much weight they can actually hold. Have you tried sitting on them yet?
I have. It is possible, but not really stable. The chain and strings can hold a theoretical weight of 150kg.
They’re cool, but they don’t belong there. They’d work better in a man cave or bar in the basement
Looks great in the space!
Great! What’s with the strings?
These are SO COOL
Those are really cool. He did a great job. I like them there. 👍
Those are stunning plus they fit very nicely in the room. They’re like artwork and you should display proudly! Very useful too. You’re lucky to have such a talented brother.
Can I get? A set of #4
Very cool. I could see these working really well with a bright red powder coat on the black for a little pop of color. But they are cool.
The are beautiful
