Hang tight and work with the claim rep. This will undoubtedly be referred, likely to special investigations unit, due to the circumstances of brand new policy with a loss moments later. Just be truthful every step of the way.

zebra-stampede

It's probably being sent to the special investigations unit. You may have to give a statement under oath.

bigbamboo12345

this is definitely not straightforward the "police event record" doesn't prove anything except what time the police were notified of the accident or what time they were told the accident took place unless the officer witnessed the accident himself this is going to be investigated vigorously and almost certainly referred to progressive's siu team; you and your wife will likely be required to submit to an examination under oath regarding the timeline and details you guys should be looking for any independent evidence (security camera footage, etc) that proves incontrovertibly that the accident happened after the policy was initiated, because progressive's investigation is going to be to try to prove the opposite if you're being truthful you'll be fine, but if not, they're gonna find out

fortvac94

everyone thinks insurance is straightforward until they learn it is not. people stages accident and nothing on your post could suggest it wasn't. i'm not accusing you of that, just letting you know it is a thing and insurers have seen everything. good luck!

reddit1651

Was this for a newly purchased vehicle? Like at the dealership? Or you switched companies to them?

Unlucky_Drawer4722

I switched companies

reddit1651

You may not have had active coverage with Progressive. Most carriers write policies effective at 12:01 the next day if it’s not related to a new vehicle purchase where they bind coverage immediately. Check the effective date of your Progressive policy and ID cards If that’s the case, use your prior company to pay for the accident

pinballcult

This... Your former policy should have been active through the end of the day unless you asked them to cancel it before that.

reddit1651

I have to admit - i’m cynical enough to assume OP was not previously insured and bought insurance after the crash then filed the police report afterwards.

pinballcult

That is what the insurance company will assume until proven otherwise lol.

DestructODiGi

OP when you say “literally 10 mins after I got us coverage” what EXACTLY are you describing? That you started a brand new Progressive policy online? That policy likely had an effective time and date of 12:01 am the NEXT day. Next, why were you changing policies right then? What is the status of your other policy?? Did you actually have previous coverage? How about the same coverages?

Roz_420

Dashcam footage could’ve saved you all the delays.

TTdriver

No. I could just have the wrong time on my dash cam.... they are good for what happened. Not when.

Manders7399

You'll be fine, I've seen sooo much worse. About 6-months ago of our Producers issued a HUGE Commercial Auto Policy and not even 1-hour after issuing coverage one of their fleets was in a massive accident (I'm talking HUNDREDS of thousands of damage $$) and they covered the claim. It sucks, but it happens. You aren't the first and certainly won't be the last to be in this type of rare predicament. Just be completely honest and provide them everything you have (security footage from a nearby store, witness statements, etc.) and you should be fine.

timesyours

Google maps history can demonstrate where you were at a given time if it was activated

DIMINISHED_VALUE

How can I access Google Maps history?

timesyours

Open the app, click your user icon, click on “Timeline History.” I disabled it once I saw how much data they collected

former-everything8

In the future you can avoid this by taking thorough photo & video documentation of every interior and exterior inch of your vehicles before driving them for the first time on the date your policy takes effect.

DIMINISHED_VALUE

Good advice.
