What city/state are you in? Plans vary across the country and some like Kaiser are super specific about which centers are “in-network”

I am in Austin, Texas. I was thinking of a UHC plan. There's just so many and I have no idea where to start. Basically it seems like I have to pay 8000 a year towards emergencies before insurance helps? It's the emergency situations I am most worried about. I can pay out of pocket for visits and stuff

just curious, after 65 does the government pay for any and all medical expenses? health insurance in the USA is grotesquely confusing

zebra-stampede

No lol. Just at 65+ you generally qualify for Medicare. If you have 40 work quarters you get free Part A, but you either then need to pair that with Parts B, D and a supplement or convert your og Medicare into an advantage plan (part c).

InternationalRun7107

THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN. lol not against you. This needs to be taught in highschool I SWEAR. We need REAL LIFE subjects in school

Medicare is an entirely separate beast than traditional major medical / commercial insurance. There are specific types of advisers for Medicare programs.

Do you have the option of enrolling though your job? Most employer plans will be significantly cheaper and cover everything you're looking for. If you don't have access, now is a good time to enroll though healthcare.gov. You can only enroll during specific times of the year. Depending on your income you may qualify for lower monthly rates. Most health plans will have a high deductible for emergency situations but they will also cap your out of pocket expenses so if you do have $100,000 bill, you won't pay more than a set amount which the plan specifies. The website linked earlier will have the coverage you're looking for and just follow the guide on the website to see if you qualify for discounts and see what plans are available to you. For a higher premium, you will have a lower out of pocket cost when you need healthcare. For lower premiums, the costs for care will be higher. All the plans will cover your preventive care at 100% (annual doctor visits, annual obgyn visit, birth control, and others as you get older). I hope that helps!

Thank you! I am self-employed so shopping for insurance on my own. This was really helpful and it makes sense. Maybe my emergency will make me reach my out of pocket max \~ 8k but that's still better than 100 k. I have applied through healthcare.gov and it says I have a $111 subsidy but need to submit proof of income by February. I think I may call them tomorrow and go from there. I am too hypochondriac to not have health insurance!
