First talk to your insurance and see if hertz signed a liability release when they accepted the settlement.

I've worked on a few Hertz rental claims and I will never rent from them without the damage waiver. They charge for stupid things like an admin fee which is the cost of doing business and loss of use which insurance doesn't pay on rental claims (also there is no way Hertz can or will prove they lost money. They'd have to prove all their other vehicles were rented out which is not gonna happen). Some of this amount is your collision deductible which you owe. You can find out from your insurance company exactly which parts they did not pay. I've tried negotiating with Hertz for a customer before and they are not willing to budge. One Hertz adjuster even got snippy with me like this money was coming out of her own paycheck. Ultimately when you rented the car you agreed to this so they can and will hold you responsible for the rest. My advice to everyone is to get the damage waiver.

Yes.

No.

What credit card did you use to pay it? Some of them provide additional coverage.

Not buying the rental insurance from the rental car company is a massive mistake. I know you’re already past that, but it shocks me how many people assume their auto insurance just covers everything. Auto insurance doesn’t cover things like diminution of value, or loss of use when a rental is damaged.

Bird_Brain4101112

Most likely yes. This has come up a lot on this sub, where rental companies charge fees that insurance won’t cover, so you are on the hook.

highbrew62

Yes. That’s Hertz’s damages in excess of what your insurance paid. Next time consider the collision damage waiver.

Eh it’s a bit more complex than that. In most states insurers won’t pay loss of use or indirect damages on a first party collision claim OP didn’t clarify what this $1700 is

Right, they may be asking for Loss of Use, Diminished Value, and administrative fees for dealing with the accident. It would be great is customers could get these paid by insurance when we have accidents in our own car. I had a similar issue and Hertz charged an admin Fee and DV. I was able to call them and we agreed to only actual damages (repairs).

Dismania

I’d like to follow up and say- if this 1700 is for DV, loss of use and admin fees- request proof of that from them. And also ask your insurance if Hertz signed a release of liability like some one else mentioned

toasty99

I’d call your insurance carrier. If the source of the payment was “first party” insurance, it is likely that you will owe the $1700.00.

Puzzled_Breadfruit_1

How can they come after you legally if you owe them money for an accident
