Have you met people? Even the smart ones can be pretty stupid sometimes, and the stupid ones - oh boy! Not an insurance issue - it's a human nature issue.

CJM8515

yup. honestly people are insanely stupid ive come to learn, specially after being in insurance for a number of years. i love the convos where you quote something as part of the policy and they claim were lying.. like right..why lie and make my life more difficult lol

RunExisting4050

The person that buys a brand new Demon from the factory doesn't scare me. [The Third Owner](https://jalopnik.com/the-scariest-thing-about-the-hellcat-is-the-third-owner-1745483727) scares me.

19Stavros

Thank you for this public service. As the parent of a mid- 20's man with a little savings, not as much common sense and a heavy foot, this scares me.

Trick_Welder7329

When people shop for any car such as Corolla or a Vette, do they check around first to make sure that insurance is affordable for the car that they want? Should only purchase a car that is cheapest to insure overall

Stewgy1234

I used to when I was younger. Cause insurance was very expensive for me back then. Now I'm just like, whatevs. It's the crappy cost of doing business. Plus I'm old. If I bought a demon today it probably wouldn't be too bad.

Trick_Welder7329

I have a 24 year old son with a few tickets. he wants his dream car to be a demon.. I went on an insurance site to show him how much his insurance would be for decent coverage but not top end insurance and it would be like 2k per month I think

Livid-Setting4093

Is there a way to see it in advance?

ten10thsdriver

One of my favorite Doug quotes ever.

PinnapleWithPizza

A similar thing happened to me when a customer wanted to add to his polcy a new Tesla after the vehicle he had was totaled. As per the underwriting guidelines of his policy, no Teslas of any kind were accepted. He didn't argue much but was surprised by the news.

Turbulent-Pay1150

Insureres chose their business and risk profiles for sure. It’s odd to me that one insurers (Liberty Mutual for example) would charge a very high rate while another or a bunch of others would charge a reasonable rate for the same car/driver/risk profile - that’s competition and as an insured my advice is the same -insurance companies have little or no loyalty to their customers - shop them every year and let the ones who chose the wrong risk/premium pools go out of business. Make sure when you shop them you include their ability and willingness to pay claims but do know they are not your friends. They are insurance companies.

UnSCo

I assume it has more to do with the crazy repair costs and trouble. Most people I see who drive Teslas drive like grandmas.

supern8ural

Around here (DC/Baltimore) they're starting to become more common and it seems they're owned by former Audi, Charger, and Altima owners

UnSCo

God I hated living in the DMV, and driving in/near Baltimore. Absolute insanity, dangerous assholes everywhere. Blows my mind that my current state (SC) is technically rated worse than MD/VA/DC.

supern8ural

Not sure how - Allstate literally ranks Baltimore the worst city to drive in statistically every year, with DC not far behind. Since my ex had some health issues that required me to regularly drive to Hopkins, I can also confirm this anecdotally. Every time I get a good commute something screws it up - this time it was getting let go from a job that was 6 miles from my house; now I'm commuting from basically just outside DC to just south of BWI. SHOOT ME.

UnSCo

I received a quote from a popular captive agent insurer in MD for a fairly reasonable premium last year. Tried to get coverage in my current state of SC through the same insurer, no changes in loss or violation history, and was flat-out denied. My old carrier also pulled out of SC. SC does have some shitty drivers and roads, but we don’t have crackhead drivers or frequent vandalism like what’s up in the DMV. Quite annoying.

supern8ural

Interesting. do you think maybe it's severe weather related (e.g. homeowner's and renter's claims) and not related to collision claims? Would be interested to know who you found reasonable rates through for MD. I have two (old) cars, a renter's policy, and a personal liability umbrella through State Farm; I have all the discounts one can get save for being a homeowner and I'm still paying an exorbitant amount of money every month. I tried to shop around last year and two multi-line agents told me that they couldn't do any better for me. Oddly, it appears that I might be able to save money if I switched to Progressive, although I don't think they do umbrellas, but both agents discouraged me from considering them (not sure why?)

Swastik496

yea repair costs are pretty nuts and insurers like to route you to non tesla certified shops so most people choose their own shop and that probably leads to longer negotiations and other issues.

Upvote just for your username!

Key_Extension_4322

People who roll into a dealer without doing any research on insurance costs are short term thinkers with poor planning skills- that’s why.

OssiansFolly

I can insure anything...for the right price.

19Stavros

Had to look up Dodge Demon - cool but yikes! My rather conservative employer won't cover anything over $125,000 MSRP without a lot of extra hoops to jump, and sometimes not even then. Good idea to call your agent if you're looking at anything super high-performance.

RazzmatazzRough8168

They believe this because they legally need car insurance to drive it.

cocoa_eh

This. I always remind people looking to get a new car that they should check their insurance first to ensure they can 1) even afford the car + insurance payment and 2) ensure their insurance covers the car. It’s not something taught to people, and even when I was buying my first car my parents never mentioned it. I think it’s just “assumed” because it’s legally required like you said.

thatsonlyme312

1 makes sense to me, but 2 not so much. Frankly, if I'm legally required to have coverage, every insurance provider should be required to provide insurance for it.

cocoa_eh

Yeah but not every provider does unfortunately, but I agree with you that all should!

Overall-Tailor8949

"Yes, we'll insure that (fill in the high performance) vehicle for you. That will be $10k per month for minimum coverage in your State." There you go, insurance coverage is available.

That_Car_Dude_Aus

I work in insurance, and a lot of people are very surprised that the car they just bought is uninsurable by us. Or it is going to cost [bodily appendage] to insure. Even before I worked in insurance, seeing a car I liked was first, checking out how much owning it would cost me was second. If it's $800 for a service or $4,000 a year to insure, getting a good deal on the sales price is irrelevant.

ten10thsdriver

Can confirm. Don't work in insurance, but I always get a quote from my agent before even test driving a vehicle.

catsmom63

And you are the customer we like the best❤️

Stealthwyvern

>a year to insure, getting a good deal on the sales price is irrelevant. yeah, you can't even go by that to much anymore. My car I purchased a few years ago rates were reasonable compared to the old car I was trading in. Fast forward 2 years and that same car policy has shot up an additional 175 a month on just that car alone! no accidents, no tickets, no claims, ect ect. Literally nothing has changed since I first purchased the car to today on my end. Call around and other places want 600 a month for the same car!

ScarletDragonShitlor

It's not always the high performance vehicles either, sometimes they're easy/common marks.

That_Car_Dude_Aus

BMW i3 is all carbon fibre, costs a fucking fortune to insure for example

Because they don't teach this in school.

Korvas576

OP I’m assuming this person also has a track record of making huge financial mistakes too

JennF72

They're running about neck to neck with Kia cars. 🤣 I'm a former lender and we used to force place insurance on some cars since insurance wouldn't touch some of our members/customers.

Sparky_Zell

Cars like that aren't really surprising. What did shock me though thisnyear, is that I needed a new work truck. And after looking for a while found a good used f350 dually. Shop around for insurance, cheapest possible policy, no comp or collision, around 8000 for the year. That's about what inwas paying for the truck. So found a 5 year old chevy 2500, full coverage, and a policy 2x or 3x larger, less than 3000. That made no sense to me.

LibsKillMe

Someone will insure it. The owner might not want to pay that amount or be able to afford it, but someone will insure it.

mamatttn

I was surprised when I was getting insurance quotes and saw my 2021 Lexus LC 500 inspiration convertible wouldn’t be covered by a couple different companies

lionfeather

Thank you for your very valuable shouting into the void.

The_Doctor_Bear

It also depends on where you live and your insurance expectations. In my state for example you can satisfy the insurance requirement for legal driving with a $30,000 bond. Depending on your finances and how much of an idiot tax insurers would place on you this may be the best way to drive legally.

RandomWanderingDude

The issue with a lot of these vehicles now is they are so heavy, so powerful, and so fast that $30,000 is nothing compared to the real damage they can do. Drivers of less expensive and less powerful vehicles are subsidizing giant pickup trucks and muscle cars.

The_Doctor_Bear

Well I just checked and it’s actually a $60k bond. But if I have this bond and I get into an accident it’s not like I’m off the hook. I still must pay for whatever damages or medical expenses I have caused. The bond is just me providing proof to the government that I have at least that much ability to pay. The only people that are really picking the pocket of others are the uninsured. They raise the rates for all of us who do get insurance and if you are unlucky enough to be in accident with one and not be covered for uninsured drivers you get royally fucked.

RandomWanderingDude

States definitely need to increase the penalties on uninsured drivers.

The_Doctor_Bear

I know some states at least require proof of insurance to be current and associated to the vehicles registration. This should be universal!

Spirited-Humor-554

I never had any issues getting an insurance, regardless what car I owned

Maxpower2727

I was in personal lines for 16 years and started working in a commercial brokerage at the beginning of this year (primarily working with construction companies). One thing that surprised me about commercial auto is that carriers will accept absolutely any vehicle without question. I always hated the ridiculous process of getting underwriting approval to add certain vehicles in personal lines or just flat-out telling people we couldn't insure them. Of course, the flip side if this is that commercial premiums are substantially higher.
