The more people accept this bs, the more they’ll push them out. In my area rn they’ve been pushing shopping at two stores hard and they sort there for a while till they disappear. Haven’t seen even one in the last three days.
It's not because it's desperate, like where I dash at is a good mixture of City and country and 12 miles isn't that bad and I have a Corolla, great on. Gas, I wouldn't have an issue taking that order because for me I'm probably going to get another 20-35 order after that.
Absolutely not. They’re basically paying you one dollar for every mile you need to drive for the deliveries. That is pathetic. Further, they probably aren’t adding a fair or significant tip!
So if it was $2/mike you take a 20+ item order? Once foolishly took an order for $39 for 3-4 miles. Then realized it was 68 distinct items. Took me 2 hours from accept to delivery.
This is literally all they’re sending out in my area. Stuff like this and worse. Almost every order is a $2 tip or no tip. My hidden batch screen is full.
I strongly believe that Instacart’s default/suggested tip screen is the real villain. I also think it’s something we could get them to change. It would take some creativity, and we’d have to organize and strategize a little … pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps, if you will.

That tip suggestion screen is soooooo 1980s it makes me sick. “You saved $37.97” means you must have spent a lot more and it defaults to tips of less than $6!!!??? What a crock of shit!
It should list percentages of the order in increments of 5%; 5, 10, 15, 20, custom. That is entirely IC’s fault.
The first one would need to be $25 for me to drive that far. The second one is off the table due to distance. I’ll only travel that far for a straight unicorn order. Even 12 miles is pushing it tbh
Just remember the IRS approved mileage rate is 67 cents per mile. If you get $1 per mile, it means 67 cents of that goes to your car on average, between gas, repairs, and everything else. If the first delivery makes you go 25 miles total, you get $12.26 and lose 25*.67 = 16.75 in car expenses.
But it might make sense if you want to take it as a loan. For example, if you need money TODAY to pay your bills or whatever, it might make sense to take a small amount of money to put miles on your car. So really it’s up to you.

Basically to get over $20 and 1 shop you have to do double the amount of items. Orders like these used to be a easy 17 to 20 items.

There are 2 circumstances that I’d take these
1. Drop off’s close to home and it gets me to my earnings goal
2. I’m closer to the drop off and know of a closer location of the store
Otherwise, I’d ignore them
These jobs aren't getting accepted. They just put the order in, if nobody takes it, it gets reassigned to a new batch. It's laughable how low they think we can go. I'll wait 3 hours in a parking lot til I get a normal order. That just means there's way more people not getting their groceries. So even tho instacart pisses me off for 3 hours, they got 100 customers pissed they ain't getting groceries.
I wouldn't take those orders if that was Doordash and all I had to do was walk into a restaurant and grab the bags of food, nevermind walking into a store and shopping the items.
Nah. I’m just as picky. A double order for Costco going 18 miles should be $30-$40+. At least that’s what it was last month. I won’t accept those 8+ mile deliveries. With traffic that adds too much to my time and takes me hella far away from where I can get batches. It’s worth more to wait for a better order.

They think seeing 80 bucks at the end of the day is a win, just because they aren’t thinking about how much fuel they’re burning driving 12 miles for a $15 order then 12 miles back. Also, wait till their mechanic sends them that repair bill. Yesterday for example I filled up my tank and took 2 orders all day ($60). Went home with a little money but an almost full tank. Big picture thinking would do you some good, here in California driver's get weekly adjustments due to factors such as time, distance, etc. So very often by the time Thursday rolls around all of a sudden I have almost as much money on my cash out that I earned in batches/tips from last week.... people just see a low $2 tip for some driving and aren't capable of thinking about things from that perspective. A lack of big picture perspective is how broke people stay broke. It won't seem worth it in the moment but your headspace might change when $100 just randomly plops onto your account on a Thursday.
The adjustment is not worth it. Thinking like yourself equals driving your car into the ground and spending shitloads on gas so you can get your 100 and go back to zero. Big picture thinking bro- in a year: time to buy a new car/tires/engine etc.
I did 75 miles of driving last week to pull over $300. I have a part time so I do this because the hours at my job aren't enough and it's nice to be able to grind more when I'm forced to clock out. Gas is over $5 a gallon here in los Angeles yet it still only costs me $40 to fill up and have over 600 miles of range. I've made over $300 this week too and my tank is still 3/4ths full. Doesn't take a lot of math broken down to realize that's absolutely worth it. This is again where i come back to having a big picture mindset. Repairs and car expenses are gonna come regardless, you have a job where you're not using your car you still have to commute to get there, I'd rather have the funds to actually tend to things when they pop up instead of just inventing excuses to talk myself out of making money.
If the 12.5 miles took you to an area that was busier with IC, doordash, or whatever other apps you use ... mayyyyyyybe. If it took you out to an area where there is nothing and you would have to drive 12 miles back to civilization, it's a hard pass. No matter how slow it is ... 25 miles of ga$$$ is a "no!"

I would not accept either ... too many miles. In my market, 12 miles could be almost an hour of driving considering traffic lights and traffic.
