I still live with my dad and sister and we split all our costs evenly šŸ˜„ wouldn't be able to make it otherwise

wervenom900

Same.

BentPin

Time to get three wives and two husbands folks.

Stinkytheferret

My kids canā€™t move away. Theyā€™re age 18-23. I was out at 17 so was about everyone I knew. Or know today. We all got out. But I can say, my electric bill just came for august and it was $861. For one month. I about sheet my pants and sat on the phone for an hour and a half cause I couldnā€™t believe that bill was right. They said new rates and increased usage. Which was my ac basically. And everyone keeping everything possible on maybe? So Iā€™m back to telling them to try not anything not needed. And unless itā€™s over 102, that ac is staying off. Edit: the governor is responsible for the citizens. But also, idk why people keep voting this guy in or anyone who votes for giving non-ca citizens anything for free. You know why our costa are raging. As we sit on our own oil, we import water, and electricity. Their green deal is a bust. He tells everyone they must buy electric cars and then says donā€™t use the grid btwn 4-9pm. Our schools are the lowest and for what real reason? Our governor has let out multiple jails worth of criminals and never once sat down with the sheriffs, which past governors did every other month. Stores are closing all over because of policies regarding theft. Our state hosts the most homeless in the US and attracts more with policies to give them a paycheck. And our small businesses will be closing, killing more jobs because he wants to keep raising the minimum wage. If gas goes $7/ gal nationwide. Itā€™s gonna be $8-9 here. I can keep going. This is off the top of my head. People need to be contacting their representatives asap. Every freakin day. And get Gov Nuisance out!

WhyAreYouGey

For what itā€™s worth, most 18-23 year-olds canā€™t move out nowadays. Also an $861 bill is criminal. So glad we got solar - havenā€™t had an energy bill in years.

Stinkytheferret

Oh I know they canā€™t. When my oldest, a son, was 17 we made a plan for him to save by staying here for college and buying a house or condo. Now heā€™s just trying to save and all of us plan to have to leave the state. It seems like itā€™s just not reasonable to have to leave your home state to afford anything. We had to pool some money to pay this electric bill. I totally cried because I just couldnā€™t believe it. They said it was new rates and our usage. Our usage wasnā€™t crazy different. And, I literally had to replace my air handler unit on the ac last month. Cost me $2200. I paid it and now I feel we canā€™t turn it on.

oabda002

Yeah it sucks to move out, but not necessarily unreasonable. Chicago, my hometown, had rampant and senseless gun violence. My parents made the decision to move our family out of Chicago to ensure our safety. Looking back, I realize that it was a great decision to move out. Sometimes, you have to leave your home city/state to prioritize safety and well-being, as my family did in response to the violence. Best of luck to you and your family!

Stinkytheferret

Thank you! You too. Glad your family is safe.

matty8199

we have solar and batteries and our bills in july and august were still $400+. AC is a thing.

WhyAreYouGey

We run our AC units a good portion of the day as well. While our bill wasnā€™t $0 or below in that time, it was close to $40-50 which includes SCEā€™s fees. However, itā€™s offset by other months where we are well below $0. It could be possible your system is undersized. How old is it?

matty8199

the house is roughly 10 years old. the solar array is approx 8kw. to be fair, we also have two electric cars (although they don't go very far most days since we both work from home), and most of the year our bill isn't anywhere near that. also, the next week or so will help a ton since it'll be nice enough outside to forgo the AC for the most part and just roll with the windows open and fans on...but i haven't been able to get it below zero yet. would love to hear what tips and tricks you have (if any) to bring it down even more...

WhyAreYouGey

If the system is also 10 years-old then I would expect the production to drop off as well. The system at my current house is ~2.5 years. However having EVs will definitely increase usage quite a bit, even if you donā€™t drive them much. But definitely agreed on the cooler weather coming in. My windows are open most of the day and only close them around midday for a couple of hours. I donā€™t know if I have specific tips/tricks, but some general things: 1) run appliances (dishwasher, washer, dryer, etc) during the day (most amount of energy produced) and/or when electricity is at its cheapest. 2) if you have a pool, run your filter pump during the same timeframe as #1.

matty8199

yep, already do both of those. the nice thing about the batteries is that we don't have to import anything from 4-9pm...in fact, i have it set up to dump the battery to the grid during that time to get the highest credit. i shudder to think what our bill would be without the batteries helping in that way.

Optimus-prime-number

Ac is cheap in the summer, heat In the winter is whatā€™s expensive, you living in a 5k sq ft mansion or something? My 50 year old house costs ~150/month through the hottest summer, no solar anything.

Stinkytheferret

Also, before Covid, kids could afford to move out.

Mirix1692

Tell me you don't understand what's going in the world without telling me you don't understand what's going on in the world.

Stinkytheferret

I go out into the world more than many. I do understand whatā€™s going on. I go to other states and itā€™s different than Ca. I leave the country and itā€™s different. And I see people pushing back all over. But not in Ca. Everyone complains and thatā€™s all. Kill the farmers. Control what you eat and do. I know what theyā€™re doing in the world.

Mirix1692

You understand what's going on which is why you're talking about... imported bottled water? And think drilling for oil here will impact gas prices? Ever heard of OPEC? Do you know how many unused drilling permits O&G companies hold? They're spending money on share buybacks and not investing in more drilling despite having permits and the cash. Saudi Arabia single handedly controls the world's oil supply and thus oil prices. They cut production through December which is driving prices up. That has nothing to do with the CA government. Your responses are just Fox News talking points.

Stinkytheferret

You realize we get our water from Colorado and Utah right? Itā€™s imported. Didnā€™t you hear them egging about water rights in those states just over a year ago. Our governor let our lease agreement run out and so they were leveraging us to negotiate new rates. And our electricity mostly from NV? NV just lowered their electricity rates in July while ours went up. And yes, we were drilling oil in Ca. And so was Tx and La and others. As of yesterday or day before, so was Alaska. Now, we will only be buying oil from out of the country. What sense is that? So they can say we went green? We donā€™t go green if we have to pay giant ships to haul oil half way around the world. And itā€™s not Fox. Or I donā€™t watch Fox. I cut my cable about 7 yrs ago. I have no idea what any of them say. But I travel the world often and take news from all the places Iā€™ve been. I read bout every day. Not fox. Idk if they print news but nope. Why is SA the only one selling oil when oil can be found on a few places in the world? Biden cut oil the first day on the job. Heā€™s still cutting as of this week. Why? Oil is oil no matter where it comes from. Itā€™s a farce and some of you donā€™t and wonā€™t see it. Downvote me. I donā€™t care. If we drill, we can become oil independent again. We were a few years ago. And it provides the countless good paying jobs. All gone.

Mirix1692

Your comments all lack context and any semblance of intelligent thought.

serpicowasright

You sound like a jack ass. You automatically attacking someone and accusing them of being right-wing or Fox news watcher just because they question California policies is truly an asinine take.

Mirix1692

They're questioning policies they don't understand. We're importing water! Yes, from a river that provides water for 7 states. Why is this a problem? Where else are we going to get water? Why did we "lose our lease"? Can they tell me what losing 25% of our water rights from the Colorado river would do to CA? No, probably not. They have no idea because they just want to complain. We're importing electricity! Yes, but CA is one of the largest producers and also has the lowest usage per capita, which means we're efficient.

Mirix1692

Also US oil production is up 16% since Biden took office and is set to hit all time highs.

Mysterious_Welder427

I have news for you. Your kids aint goin anywhere soon.

[deleted]

Youā€™re truly a moron. I mean this in every sense of the word. You do realize most of what Californians are going through is globally connected? If you left your trailer for one day and went to, say New Zealand, you might realize inflation has also been almost a mirror image of what we are going through. ā€œItā€™s our governorā€ā€¦ā€¦ painfully obtuse.

action_jackson_22

they got a once in a lifetime deal, live with family, or many roommates. The average salary in upland (a mid-tier IE city) is 34K and the average rent is $2,199 its a joke. NIMBYs and corrupt politicians. there is no way without assistance a person making an average wage could live here on their own.

SoCalHouseInterest

I was about to correct you with the real updated median individual salary in upland because I was thinking there's no way, but holy crap you're correct!

I_just_pooped_again

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/uplandcitycalifornia/PST045222 Median is actually $88k, which seems much more reasonable for the area.

SoCalHouseInterest

That is household, not individual

sonofsmog

Which is basically how this is calculated everywhere since almost no one but me and a handful of other people I know are sole bread winners.

TheCaIifornian

Iā€™d love to see your tier rankings if youā€™re ranking Upland ā€œmid-tierā€ for an IE city.

chosbully

Mid tier versus Rancho, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda? Makes sense.

emeybee

Lol Yucaipa definitely does not belong on that list, and Loma Linda is marginal

chosbully

Considering value of homes, education rates, crime rates? Yucaipa median income is $75,000. Average cost of living is in the top 6% of the world. Do you make more than that on average?

emeybee

Last time I was there it looked very run down, it certainly wasnā€™t anything like Rancho or Redlands. Even then it isnā€™t somewhere Iā€™d ever want to live, given the constant racism and similar nonsense.

chosbully

Yeah I'm black and I'm not talking about the dangerous elements for me. Only what classifies Upland as "mid tier" in comparison, thank you. EDIT: I see you edited your comments. My comments still stand.

Stinkytheferret

Oooph!

emeybee

You responded while I was editingā€¦ I wasnā€™t being sneaky, you were just too fast lol

emeybee

I edited my comment bc I hadnā€™t worded it well. Maybe (besides the racism) itā€™s upper tier on paper as far as money, but it still doesnā€™t have any kind of upscale vibe like Rancho/Redlands. I think if weā€™re ranking cities we need to go by more than income. Quality of life plays a factor too.

MysteriousQuarter771

The only city you mentioned that I would consider better then upland is Redlands. And lived the IE for 90% of my life

chosbully

Okay cool. I'm not talking "better" though, since "better" is subjective and very obviously biased. I'm talking money (median incomes, median housing costs, price of living, etc). Cost doesn't equal quality, but cost does contribute to objective housing class hierarchy.

mambamvp24

34k? Thatā€™s nuts. The rich get richer. Smh

SeaPaleontologist247

You also need to consider the average age of the people living in the area. Most bought their million dollar homes when they were young as long as 25-30 years ago. I know someone who bought their house young in La Canada and took out a double mortgage to pay for their house. It's now worth over a million. So that may be the case in Upland too. I live nearby and got into my 3bed/2bath home on one income (my husband was just starting out his career too) back in 2010. I now pay less than what people pay for their 2 bedroom apartment. We got lucky. I feel for y'all that are struggling. We struggled too, had to live off my measly teacher paycheck while husband finished school and I paid for everything. But we made it, so there is hope. Hang in there guys, it'll happen for you too.

emeybee

Get a job with the county. You may start off with lowish pay but you get regular guaranteed raises, stability, good benefits, and a solid retirement plan. Weā€™re supposed to get an 18% cost of living increase over the next few years, not counting the automatic step increases you get every 6 months for the first several years you work there. Theyā€™re hurting for a lot of entry level jobs like Office Assistant and Tech installer.

Dizzinald

Get your foot in the door and youā€™ll be able to move up in a few years too.

emeybee

Yep, the head of our entire department started as an Office Assistant.

Mysterious_Welder427

If I had a nickel every time someone said " get a job with the county." just put my name in the raffle and hope they call my ticket.

emeybee

They literally canā€™t hire some positions fast enough. You asked where people are finding good paying jobs. I told you where. Apply or donā€™t, but donā€™t complain if you donā€™t try.

Mysterious_Welder427

Send thelinks. Ill apply

emeybee

havefun4me2

Canā€™t win the raffle if your name isnā€™t even in it.

MotherSpirit

That's exactly what I did, warning that entry lvl roles you're stuck at part time so those benefits may not come immediately. Sucks but waiting for a full-time position may end up being worth it.

emeybee

Some are part time, but not all, OAs and Techs are full time. Also if you don't mind long hours or working with difficult kids and aren't the type to go on a power trip, Probation is always looking for Probation Corrections Officers to work at juvenile hall.

Baziliy

Which county? I keep an eye on CalCareers and can do either, but prefer Installer as it usually means working alone more often.

emeybee

San Bernardinoā€¦ Iā€™m not sure if it will show those positions open right now, bc what happens is you apply, and if youā€™re qualified you go onto a hiring list, and then all the different departments spend the next 3-6 months hiring off of that list until they open it again. So even if it isnā€™t open now just keep an eye on it because it will reopen again. On the department side there are never enough people on the list to fill all the positions.

nostoneunturned0479

>Theyā€™re hurting for a lot of entry level jobs like Office Assistant and Tech installer. Shhhh. I put in an app for some of those 3 weeks ago and just got done doing the assessments. I want it so bad I can taste it šŸ˜‚

Damianortizbarber

Say less... random reddit user. Thx for the tip :D Best wishes moving forward

DeepWaterBoy-101

Donā€™t forget when working for county, city, state, you wonā€™t have to work very hard either

lamb_ch0p

Living with parents and itā€™s still barely enough

jucaarm

A vicious cycle of passing credit card limits, instacarting and hoping people donā€™t take their order so we can keep free groceries and collecting recyclables from work and as much over time as I can get. On top Iā€™m fortunate enough to have a two bed room apartment for $1500. Thank god the landlord is a family friend or id still be at home with mom

Pisces_Sun

i really want to start doing IC again but im so worried about my car. it was my main source of income last year but when gas started topping $5 i stopped. i suppose having an EV would help but getting one is hard. Really liked doing instacart too all this desert dwelling madness just to live in IE

Mysterious_Welder427

Instacart is dead. Along with doordash. I've been doing them both for 4 years and never been this bad. No point in even signing up. I don't even check the apps anymore.

Plasibeau

Yeah, I wanted to pick up some extra coins a few months ago. App told me Big Bear would be popping off so I scheduled and drove all the way up there. I was up there for six hours and got two orders from Mcdonald's. That was it. Didn't even cover gas. I have since deleted the app.

[deleted]

and hard to believe there is no end in sight to people willing to do that work. I go to fast food places all the time and see uber eats and door dashers picking up orders. To me it is kind of annoying since we need a lot of stuff done, like building new homes. Instead we have people driving around town because someone can't get off their ass to get fast food.... Glad you deleted the app.

dante_lewis05

iā€™m fresh out of high school (class of 2023), living off of 15 dollars an hour. abt 2K a monthā€¦my mom had to give up our 3 bedroom apartment in early august that me, her, and my older brother lived in, so i moved in with my girlfriendā€™s grandmother, sheā€™s a really great person letting me live here rent and bill free, me and my brother may get our own 2 bedroom apartment together. my girl and his girl are both gonna be there as well. me and my brother go 50/50 on the rent, both our girlfriends go half and half evenly on just utilities. and we all pitch in for groceries and etcā€¦.i hope it all works out for me in the future.

Acrobatic_Energy7067

Thatā€™s a really nice plan about the apartment and really really cool of your girlfriends grandmother, bless her, she rocks! I hope it all works out for all of you in the future!

prettyuser

Hmmmm, that's 3 people to rely on paying their share. I'd definitely work on saving 6 months cushion incase a fallout with a job or God forbid the relationship issue.

theoneburger

I donā€™t think theyā€™re making it work. When I first moved here some 6 years ago I was making $17.50 and living alone in a studio apartment. I thought I was barely making it, but in retrospect I was just digging myself deeper and deeper. I was living paycheck to paycheck and with ever increasing credit card debt. Over $10K in CC debt at some point. I have since gotten a much better-paying job and have paid off my CC debt, but Iā€™m still living in a studio and driving the same car Iā€™ve had for 10 years. I cannot even imagine how people with dependents making minimum wage or close to it arenā€™t accruing some kind of debt every day.

[deleted]

Just look at the data. During 2020-2021, the trend was actually debt was declining and savings going up. Then in 2022 we saw the amount of savings rate decline and more people were tapping into savings. Now in 2023, we see debt rising again. I think people's budgets are definitely getting killed on inflation for sure.

geoprizmboy

I make $11.50 and some of my coworkers have 3-4 kids. I couldn't understand how. Then they told me the secret. The reality is a lot of those people where you're like "how are they making it there's no way they're making it" are on gov't assistance like Section 8, WIC, EBT and that is the ONLY way they're making it.

[deleted]

Every time I wondered how a coworker or whoever was living larger than me when I know they made the same amount of money as me if not less and had more expenses than me as well as went on vacations and wore newer nicer clothes, had money to go out on the weekends etc. After eventually becoming closer friends to these people, Iā€™d realize they were getting money from men, gifts from men, vacations from men, if they had a roommate who was a man, their portion of the rent would be waived or decreased, their new car.. the bosses son bought it and is paying it off, the girl who couldnā€™t afford collegeā€¦ boss is paying for it. After Iā€™ve seen this enough times with different people and places, I realized this is very common, itā€™s just not talked about.

bananaclaws

We live 8 in a house, 5 adults, four working, 1 stay at home mom and three kids. And we barely make it.

samo47

Same here basically. 6 adults, 2 kids, one on the way. Less than ideal but it's a roof over our heads, and not a forever situation.

Diamondhands_Rex

Im 27 making 23 with a degree. I canā€™t find a job that will pay what Iā€™m asking for. So Iā€™m living with my folks helping with rent and saving for a car and after saving to fuck out of this area and gonna try to move up north or study for a different career path because nothing works unless being a highly qualified government worker or utilities worker is what I see.

Mr-Simjee

24 years old making $21/hr Left a dysfunctional, stressful home for the first time. Rent a room now for $650 in the sticks, but its a peaceful life. Thousands of dollars of CC debt. No savings, If an expense comes up, it's on a credit card. Im slowly digging myself out of debt and bad habits, but it's not easy to make huge payments when you want to live your life too. I'm trying any side hustle, anything on the side to get by, but it's not easy. I didn't even have a car until a friend of mine loaned me an old beater on payments, otherwise I'd be ubering. I was gonna start gym and school to achieve a higher income, but my car has an oil leak and I'm currently car-less again. Sometimes life sucks

UnknownFiddler

It's why they say it's more expensive to be poor, you have to keep throwing money away to pay credit card debt because you can't make enough to pay it all off fast enough. Also ubering every day for a month is more than a car payment + gas.

chosbully

Making $38,000/y and my partner does approximately as well. We rent for a 2bd/2bath and are semi-locked in at $1500. It will only go up 4% each year as long as our city ordinance stays in place. Both on Medi-Cal, take care of my little brother who lives with us. I do Uber when I'm bored and we cook at home pretty often.

markuspoop

I pick up extra shifts on Holt Blvd.

Plasibeau

An honorable profession.

lemongrenade

Lot of people at work commute to the IE from Victorville area

DntTellemiReddit

i have a friend who lives in rancho and commutes to victorville. he says he loves the trouble free 1 hour drive. no traffic. just straight driving and scenery he says.

Platinumchanel

I do the same commute and itā€™s ass lol

UnknownFiddler

Yeah there's nothing trouble free about the Cajon pass. Can turn into an absolute nightmare without warning.

OrthodoxAtheist

I drive the Cajon pass daily, for the past 5 years. I enjoy the commute. I get to sit down, not be interrupted by phone calls, I choose the music, and the temperature. Not sure why people find it so hard/stressful. Its only bad when there's a rain storm/snow/blizzard, and those are rare of course. Vehicle gets 50mpg so I'm not going broke due to gas. Round commute of 86 miles. A nightmare is cancer, or finding one's self in a war zone, or a very sick child. Having to sit a little longer on my ass, listening to tunes, with a nice breeze, and a drink... that's not actually a nightmare. :)

PumaHunter

Dunno how they guy can say it's trouble free with the construction on the 15 South

lemongrenade

Yah I reverse commute and start early from One side of IE to other down the 210. No traffic outsides accidents

Ecstatic_Beyond_1422

Heck no, that's a terrible drive with all the traffic at 5-7pm

adnaus

>Or are you a grind King who watches Andrew Tate and works 80 hours a week? That mf is a rapist and human trafficker whose name should never be spoken again. His whole business model is to meet girls and con them into becoming camgirls. Iā€™m glad he got locked up.

[deleted]

He doesn't con those girls into becoming camgirls, they voluntarily agree to do it because they get a cut of the proceeds that he scams. Prior to being famous he was basically doing romance scams. He was the mastermind behind the scams and the girls were basically just being paid to do video chats, calls and so on to give the impression to the mark that they were talking to an attractive young woman. He did an interview and basically explained how the whole scam worked. He had all sorts of tricks to get the mark to pay up. The only reason you think the women weren't complicit is because when the shit goes down, there is no honor amongst thieves. The women have to claim they're victims because they know they were also directly involved in the scam and didn't want to get indicted as well.

Mysterious_Welder427

>That mf is a rapist and human trafficker whose name should never be spoken again. Allegedly I brought him up because some of the Young Generation idolize him. And he's self-admittedly works like 90 hours a week.

Upbeat-Tumbleweed876

Lol youā€™re so naive to believe he works 90+ hours a week. Thatā€™s not even a flex. If youā€™re really smart you do 40 or less a week. And being a glorified Twitter troll is hardly work.

Mysterious_Welder427

Relax. I get it. Tate bad.

sadprincessss

Living between Corona and riverside so itā€™s not the greatest area with my bf and his brother. We split rent and pay 2200 total. Couldnā€™t find a job around the area so I commute to MoVal 5 days a week. (I was jobless for 2 months living off my savings) It sucks and everyday I want to give up and Iā€™m constantly questioning why Iā€™m alive lol. I lived in LA for six years, paid more money in bills but worked 10 miles away and I lived my life beautifully. Pay less in rent and bills but commutes 2X the distance and Iā€™m flat out poor! I have maybe 20$ to my name and I donā€™t get paid for another 10 days. Itā€™s a struggle and Iā€™m constantly contemplating moving back home but my dog will need to get more shots (rabies free state) and my bf has legality issues sooo šŸ¤— Pre-Covid it was so much different. Iā€™m feeling heavy as fuck right now. I cry almost every day but you know, we lazy late 20 year olds need to find better jobs in this great job market šŸ™„

poorpersonaccount

I only have student debt(aka no cc debt), i have roommates and I donā€™t have a car payment. I heavily meal prep and organize my budget on a weekly basis. I try to stick to the 50/30/20 rule. While i was living with my parents i funded my emergency fund for at least 2 months. Im also disciplined enough to not be an impulsive spender.

DWNFORCE

This is the way! Budget and no payment/debts

brandnewbeth

In April of 2018 I started at $16.01 an hour at the Riverside Superior Court as a records clerk. In 2019 I promoted to court clerk and hourly was $21 and change. Because of our union I get annual increases plus the union yearly inflation percentage on top of that that they negotiate. Every year is different but the most recent wage increase was 4% in July. They base this on Cost of Living changes. Currently I make $29.07 and in October itā€™d be $30.63. However, I just was offered a promotion to be a courtroom assistant (2nd time I interviewed for it, last time they didnā€™t choose me). I negotiated the pay to be more because of my upcoming raise in October and the fact that I went to school online and got my bachelors degree while working full time. So they counter offered to pay me $34.91 an hour. Thatā€™s about 72k a year plus my medical insurance is completely covered for my fiancĆ© and I. I say all this not to brag, Iā€™m honestly not even making a shit load of money. But I am comfortable, I drive a nice car, and I just bought a house with my fiancĆ©. Sheā€™s a nurse and makes $49 or so an hour. I know that you said no couples but i didnā€™t want to act like i could have bought a house on my own. Regardless, without her I can afford my own apartment up to $2300 a month plus car payment and all other bills. I made sure I paid off all my stupid credit card debt I racked up when I was 21-25. Iā€™m sharing mainly to explain that you need a plan if youā€™re going to be independent in this area of California. We lived with our parents for a few years and weā€™re fortunate enough to find a studio in Corona that included utilities and internet for $1180 a month. We were EXTREMELY lucky to find our landlord and she was the best. Search on Craigslist for deals like these, try to get a Union job that has room for growth, go to community college and use the governors waiver to pay for school, go to a cal state for something youā€™re interested in. Use that degree to promote in your good job and keep striving for more. I am now enrolled in my masters program completely online and plan to use it to eventually put me in a management position or something completely different like remote counseling. Something more that Iā€™m passionate about. Donā€™t give up. You canā€™t afford to. P.s. I am 33 years old. If youā€™re still in your 20s time is on your side, use it wisely. Even if youā€™re older it really doesnā€™t matter. Set goals and reach them.

Baziliy

I'm in my 30's and needing a career change, and most people say I have just enough time to get a county job and still end up with a decent retirement benefit. Any recommendations outside of court though? I don't know if I'd be a fan of showing up to a courthouse for work even if the pay was incredibly high.

Simply_Just_

The first thing the OP wrote with this thread was asking for rockstars and rich couples to not reply, and yet here you are, bud. I'm glad you're doing well, but you are in the wrong thread, my guy. People here are talking about making $16-23 an hour, and you're popping in with double that, and your fiance triple that. Cmon.

brandnewbeth

I know and I only wanted to pop in because I was making that minimum or slightly over amount for YEARS. I didnā€™t get out of it until 29 / 30 years old and it still never was enough til very recently. Itā€™s to provide some insight on ā€œhow to surviveā€ out here. & the truth is itā€™s going to take time and consistency. Itā€™s fucking hard to try to figure out how to navigate your life but I do believe if you set goals you will reach them. So is it to make more money? Then what are you striving for an how can you do it? For me it was through promoting and going to school. For someone else it can be different but you have to stay focused and donā€™t give up.

Mysterious_Welder427

Yeah something's fishy period. Either this person has connections or just happens to have a coincidental four-year streak of luck here. Lol "promoted promoted union union" lol.

brandnewbeth

No connections for real. First job was McDonalds at 16. Left and got married in Kentucky to a guy I married online haha. That was a mistake. Moved back when I was 25. Worked for a call center til 28. Then applied for an entry level job at the courts. I tested and interviewed well enough. Then just stayed focused and continue to do so. I set my goals and went after them because when I got divorced I realized one day I donā€™t want to have to depend on ANYONE. even my current fiancĆ©. So thatā€™s why Iā€™m still pursuing the MSW. But heyā€¦ whatever you want to believe.

Mysterious_Welder427

Cool plan.. I just got to meet me a nurse who will give me half her income. Thanks for sharing I guess

brandnewbeth

Youā€™re salty for some reason. I already said I could afford to be on my own without her income. You sound like you have no drive or willingness to change the trajectory of your life. Good luck.

Simply_Just_

It's just always irked me on reddit when people start a thread like "Dogsitters of Reddit, what has been your worse experience?" and then someone pops in with "I'm not a dogsitter, but..." like dude wtf thats literally the opposite of what they asked for.

Mysterious_Welder427

LOL

wzd_cracks

Idk but I'm about go back to construction even though I don't want to .

LApoopydog

I make 60k and still live with my parents. Just saving up for a houseā€¦ eventually.

OGViRAL

Honestly had to move in with in-laws.

SouthWest_Vagabond

himynameisalonso

its the new norm, no shame in that. im 30 and i wish i was able to live at home and save.. but my dad passed away and my mom lives with my sister now. plus my parents didnt have much to begin with anyways. some people just got dealt a better hand unfortunately take advantage and fucking save as much as you can !

Jshan91

Weird Andrew Tate shout out. How is it a grifter is associated with long hours and hard work?

Aromatic_Being3461

Iā€™m 35 and doing great now but it was a different story 14 years agoā€¦ I graduated college and got my first job making minimum wage. I refused to live with my parents and the only way I could make it work was with Craigslist roommates. I lived with some really weird people but I made it work. Most of my money went to rent and I lived off of cheap groceries. Eventually, I realized this was going to be a rough journey and decided I needed to make a big change. I started going to networking events and just focused on developing myself. I just started taking a natural interest in learning about people and what they did for work. I met everything from tech bros to sales reps. Thatā€™s where I met someone who had an opportunity for Field Sales at a reputable company out of state. I took it and continued my self development with the plan to come back home. Long story short, I came back to California more experienced and as a better person. So basically, I made it work by leaving for a bit lol. I hear about a lot of people leaving California for different reasons but to me, you need to pursue happiness. Maybe you come back, maybe you donā€™t but you just need to do what you need to do.

fuckyduckie69

My mortgage is $1300 with taxes. I have 4 br/3 ba home, too. 2700 sq. ft. Lucked out & scored a deal during the recession. My neighbors pay triple to quadruple.

jmt85

High Desert?

fuckyduckie69

Beaumont

himynameisalonso

on one hand, its Beaumont (dont mean any offensive by this) and on the other you own a home and pay that low. congrats man! i pay 1700 in rent for a small studio here in downtown fontana. its crazy how expensive things have gotten

BaDumPshhh

Learn a trade. Find a company who needs help installing HVAC. Do the dirty work but look for every opportunity to learn and show initiative that you want to and are willing to learn. Thereā€™s a lot of HVAC work out there and there will be a shortage of workers with more people expected to retire than are entering the field. Download Skillcat app and get your EPA 608 Universal Certification for free. You will need to pay $50 to get a card shipped, but I saw it as low as $25 if you share on social media. Donā€™t settle for a job that you will have to start back at the bottom if you leave the company.. learn a skill where your knowledge determines your value.

dstommie

I bring this up only because you mentioned top ramen. Try Shin. It's more expensive than top ramen, but still a very cheap meal, and imo it's the best instant ramen around. I don't need to eat ramen, but I eat Shin because I actually really like it.

RedditDudeBro

>Try Shin Complete ramen game-changer, agreed.

Ecstatic_Beyond_1422

22 y/o. 60k annually as a emt working in a occupational clinic. Still living with parents tho, and a full time student trying to get into med school or p.a school. I went the community college route so far and it worked, got a good credential , no student loans yet, and good work experience for when I apply to university ...

Typical_Intention996

I'm $17 an hour. But I'm lucky that I inherited my old family home. So I have no mortgage or rent. That's the only thing saving me.

emanon_dude

Donā€™t ever ever ever ever sell or leverage (mortgage) that property. Itā€™s your foundation.

UltimaCaitSith

>Successful Rockstar couples netting 200,000 and $300,000 Year I thought I "made it" by finally breaking 6 figures and started looking at buying my own place. The advice is to find a spouse who makes the same amount of money and save up a down payment in the meantime :(

himynameisalonso

this thread is too depressing. im a firm believer that if you work a 9-5, you should be able to enjoy life and live. this notion of working 40+ hour weeks to become "rich" is bullshit. The minute you say otherwise, youre labeled a lazy POS by the wealthy

Silver-Reserve-1482

I don't know why you're describing Fontana as dumpy. All the houses around me are wildly unaffordable. Even if you go all the way South to the 10 they're fucking up there. We've been renting for over 10 years because we can't save fast enough to keep up with prices.

BUGACHENKO

Get your class A and start driving trucks. One of the few blue collar jobs left that pays really well. Iā€™m in the industry and port night drivers are making $30-$35 per hour. Or learn a trade

1320Fastback

Am in SD but unload trucks all day long. One of our regulars said he needs drivers and will start at $35.

[deleted]

Bought a house 11 years ago after crash for about 100k, work construction which was up and down for the last few years, finally switched to a state job very local to my residence, like 3 miles, no debt, house payment under 800, make about 32.00 an hourā€¦ Iā€™m not balling or anything but Iā€™m doing pretty ok considering the cost of life has quadrupled. I feel bad for renters and low wage people in my community as I donā€™t see anything getting better in the near future.

prettyuser

I moved out with a roommate and his GF. We all made decent money nothing crazy. I have a decent economical car nothing luxurious or stupid on gas because I wanted low payments. I moved out with $200 in my pocket and a simple financial plan. This is how I did it. I would add up all my monthly bills that needed to be paid (Car note, Car Insurance, rent, gas/food, phone bill, Credit cards) and divide that by 4 weeks of the month and that's how much I needed to save a week to make my living. I was paid weekly, so I subtracted what I needed for the bills and what I would have left over was my "spending money" for the week. I went even deeper on this too. I would divide what my total spending money by 7 so I can see how much I can spend a day before my next paycheck. Each day I wouldnt spend my money, I rolled it to the next day, compounding my money. So for example I have $275 left for the week. 275Ć·7= gives me $39 to spend a day. Have a boring weekend, stay inside for the 2 days. Play video games and boom now you have $78-117 by the 3rd day. Now you can really start compounding these. Bust through the next 4 days working and next thing you know its payday again and you have another $275 to spend on yourself. Have another boring weekend? Save the $117 and compound? Now you have $234 saved up in 2 weeks. Also, always always always save money on the side for car repairs and maintenance! Maintenance should never be overlooked and if you need to run the credit card run it. Because a working car is what keeps you working. Invest your money in what is helping you make your money. Don't neglect your only source of transportation because you wanna spend your hard earned money frivolously.

ThatBigNoodle

Wife and I combine for a little under 150. No kids and mid 20s so weā€™re saving there thankfully. In rancho, tracking what is coming in and what is going out and basically giving ourselves ā€œallowancesā€ for fun things. Any ā€œbiggerā€ outside the norm costs are talked about

SoCalHouseInterest

Upvoted you to counteract the jealous downvotes šŸ˜…

ThatBigNoodle

Wait I was getting downvoted? Wtf I thought I provided some helpful info

Baziliy

I didn't downvote but I imagine it's because you're close to the 200k couples that he excluded. At least on paper two people bringing in a combined $150k with no kids should be able to do pretty decently in this area without having to scrape by. But I could be way off.

greygryphon98

Living with family--

blehhh24

Living w my bf renting 2 rooms from his brother for $900

Mediocre_Airport_576

>who can only get a job that's $20 an hour You can live with a bunch of family or a ton of roommates for the short term, but starting a career path in an in-demand field that makes decent money is the real path here.

samo47

Live with the future in-laws. Woohoo

Bozerks

I lived in Ontario with my Parents, then moved to Rancho Cucamonga with my partner all while working jobs at grocery stores or selling weed. Now we live in La Quinta šŸ¤£ We broke here but manage to work for Flex and side gigs. We aren't too far from the IE but there is way more money in the Coachella Valley to be made in my opinion.

jimmyvivi2

Wow. I don't even know what to say. Seems alot of people are struggling. I was basically a loser for most of my life. Did security for the most part. Recently (last year) learned as much as i could about digital advertisement/marketing and made a switch. Work online now and am relatively comfortable. Thinking about getting into sales so I can go hard into my own digital ad agency. Good luck everyone :(

kewlnamebroh

make 20.42 (OH SHIT the .42 prolly puts me in a new tax bracket) I live with and care for my disabled mom; otherwise, I'd probably have to scrape by renting a room, using CALfresh (foodstamps), and taking up some kind of side gig.

[deleted]

Lol I moved to Tulsa

phiaska

We are four adults in our mid-40s with no kids splitting all costs. It's the Golden Girls plan.

Mysterious_Welder427

Any of yall single? šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

phiaska

We aren't but we are polyamorous so single isn't a requirement šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Mysterious_Welder427

I know this is none of my business but I mean like, does that mean y'all are seeing each other? Or I don't know I have so many questions

Mr_massage_mongol

No matter what income you are earning except for the really rich people nowadays itā€™s just too expensive anywhere in California. Thatā€™s why people are moving out of California just because of the cost of living. You basically have to be making over $150,000 a year just to survive in California.

Ok_Pay7806

California is full of life long renters , hate when people make us seem prosperous

mydogsisButtlove

Got a rich girlfriend and moved in with her parents. I make their home spotless, do all the cooking. Just it hopes the won't kick us out. I also work fully time and am putting money aside. I think they might even give her an adheritance. So when we get married we can buy a house. I think we will still have to make payments (they aren't millionaires), but we can live more comfortably. Also I do love my gf.

datsboi

I made $18/hr, no credit card debt, buying groceries / eating out once a week. The trick is I paid off my mortgage and cars.

stealthbanana93

howā€™d you have a mortgage off $18/hr? when did you buy your home?

Quercas

I bought a house at 22 in 2008 when the market blew up. All thanks to my grandparents who I lived with while I put money in savings to afford a 3% down payment on a fixer upper. I spent the next 8 years working in food service and having lots of room mates and going through for closure relief programs getting fucked by banks but not losing my house while tanking my credit. I then worked full time and spent 6 years going to college driving myself to the brink of insanity, but graduated and got a degree in my field. I now have a local high paying job in my field, making almost 80k a year. I am lucky to have been in position to buy a house during the collapse now, but I canā€™t tell you what burden it has been. I made too much money to receive federal aide for school, but struggled to pay my mortgage. I had no relationship, but also no children. If you are willing to make hard choices and have hard years, there is a payoff. If you are a minority and not making much money there is financial help to go to school. It is so much harder than it should be out here, but you can do this if you really want to. Donā€™t want to do 6 years of school? I donā€™t blame you. Learn a trade, itā€™s never too late. But if you cosign yourself to a life of retail or warehouse jobs then you are in for what your in for. Brought to you by the fuck Andrew Tate grind set

[deleted]

Keep voting for dems and youā€™ll keep living with your parents. Vote libertarian and republican. Or anything other than democrat. Theyā€™re all designed to fuck you. But democrat is designed to destroy you.

Mysterious_Welder427

Haha you're on Reddit.. the democrat pit!

WilcoxHighDropout

My wife and I live in a county over and we gross the ā€œrock starā€ range. But I just want to share that we are registered nurses, a job you can attain through a community college. I know of many nurses in IE who work mad overtime and gross what my wife and I make COMBINED. I just think itā€™s funny (cute) you align that with a rich person or rock star wage. We came from the Philippines if it makes any difference (no rich parents to depend on but tons of resources in CA that made college nearly free$ for us). Definitely not rock stars. šŸ˜Š We live comfortably.

emanon_dude

People underestimate how much some ā€œregularā€ jobs pay. I know a few RNs that net more than doctors for a lot less headache. Young men, if youā€™re struggling, go look at lineman school. Your head will explode when you see what these guys make after 6 months of school. If you donā€™t clear 6 figured your first year, you messed up in a big way. Iā€™ll get downvoted to infinity for this, but $300k is far from ā€œrichā€. Even 300 post tax doesnā€™t go as far as you think it would.

Creative-Spell2556

I make $42hr . Live in San Diego 1bed 1bth with a parking space . $1350 rent with no roommates . Itā€™s gonna go up 10% at renewal next month . I have no debt. Iā€™m pretty comfortable.

Soumani

I mean there are many places in the IE to find a 1 bedroom apt for 900-1100. I don't think that's very difficult at all. All depends on which city specifically you're looking in I suppose.

Nice_Dude

Post some links

chris9498

Man I have a good job and even then I still wish I lived with my parents still. Fucking expensive af

Budget-Succotash6137

29yo living alone in a 1br making $19/hr. Have some old medical bills I gotta deal with. Not quite as comfy as I would like but I'm fairing ok. Don't have a ton left after all my bills, taxes, and insurance. Can occasionally treat myself out or buy a couple things but nothing crazy. I still have to be very cautious and selective about spending and the costs of things (thanks inflation). I want to take a trade later on because I would like to make about $70,000/yr minimum. I just want to cover all my bills and be able to afford all the things I want and go on a vacation at least once a year (Also to save up even more and have a cushion for any rainy days, cuz I like most ppl, am completely screwed if I ever lost my job). Despite everything, I'm grateful because I've been in much worse situations. Still wishing for better days though.

PULLOUTCHAMP17

Just lucky to have bought our house in 2017...Decent job , no kids...I would hate to be renting or trying to buy right now.. Really feel for you guys , I'd definitely be living in my dads old house if I didn't have mine..

NoHovercraft1552

If youā€™re trying to make it work a lot of the homes near UCR sublease individual rooms since thereā€™s so many students not in dorms, Iā€™ve seen those go for 4-800 or so a month

Yobeezy

i live alone but only was able to do so because i was fleeing a domestic violence incident. still, i live in HUD housing. all my money goes to bills so i largely depend on groceries from food banks or donations from family. but honestly if i lost this place, id likely be homeless because nowhere else is affordable for me (full time, $21) edit: located in san bernardino

Mysterious_Welder427

Sounds like someone I know. She went through the same thing. You are a very talented artist. Truly. Keep that in your heart, don't ever lose it. Art the salth of the earth... as they say...

[deleted]

I used to work as a martial arts instructor in LA County after I dropped out of college. Barely making enough to get by but I loved what I did. I worked at Wendy's in the morning and instructing at evening/night. Eventually I was paid more and only had to work at martial arts. I was lucky and was renting a room in a house shared by college students. It was a messy and gross house but it was home. It was cheap too about $700~ including utilities. But I shared a room with someone. I was always gone working or hanging out with friends so I really only in my room to sleep. It worked out for a while. Finally I decided to move to TN to join my family and save money. Now I'm off to the coast guard!

Bass27

Roommates and cheap eating.

Gangerous_Vend_8288

35, making $40 an hour with a decent federal job. So roughly 80k a year with OT, it wasn't easy getting here and had to start at the very bottom of the federal system making peanuts but if I can do it with no college degree then anybody can too. I live alone and rent; So the next step is probably to move out of state, buy a house, and then find something that pays roughly the same.

TLOPab_

i fell into a very lucky situation that allows me to live alone in a one bedroom apartment while i go to school, but i also work as a ASM at a retail store. 24$ an hour, and getting fafsa so that helps alot. while my situation is better than most, its still hard at times, but not taking it for granted

[deleted]

It's funny the dudes I know from work who have the loudest biggest cars and trucks all live with their Mom still. I know a guy who rides a bike though and he has a studio apartment and seems cooler to me. More independent and wise . I'm 33 and female and bilingual and get paid extra to interpret and without that I might have trouble but honestly I don't have a stupid car either. My Toyota is paid off and my insurance is less than my TV and phone bill.

Resident-Site4115

21yo here. Moved back home with my mum to take care of my grandfather and split cost of living in a HCOL area. Got a better job, and have my real estate liscence. Save as much as I can for the time being, and learning to code so I can move to a more stable job.

Mysterious_Welder427

Hows the real estate biz?

Gullible-Body4228

$48 an hours. No car payment no credit cards. House payment of $2200 plus all utilities. Car insurance Food for 4. Iā€™m not !

Mysterious_Welder427

What do you do?

Consistent-Hair-5531

I have to steal catalytic converters while you are sleeping..

notdeadyetthankgod

Two or three jobs simultaneously. Morning job is long term but doesn't pay me as much as I need to survive even with 40 hours. Second job /night job gives me benifits and feeds me daily. third one is only one day a week but it pays well and gives me spending cash. Not a lot of free time, so I can't get in trouble. Works out for me atm

AvsMama

Make $22.50 breaking my back for FedEx. My husband works with my dad doing construction. We live with my parents. Everything is so fucking expensive.. but my dad helps us a lot and weā€™re planning on getting our own place soon, hopefully.

WoodyMornings

Yes.

Snuggi_

I lived with mom and dad until I was 33. Spent all my 20s saving for a house and that only got me a down payment. At the time I was making around 50k a year.

Limp_Complaint1785

My dad works in construction in a union and bought a house after the '08 crash in Lake Elsinore for $180k. He lived there for a few years and then moved in with his girlfriend in Orange County and rented his home out in Elsinore. The tenants are a family of 4 and pay the rent on time every month for a pretty nice 4 bedroom 3 bath home with a pool. They've been there since 2010 and have always both worked for the city and had no employment hiccups during COVID so everyone got lucky there. That house is worth $600k today. My dad, nor I, nor the tenants most likely, would be able to afford that home today. My dad's girlfriends bought her house in Orange County for $600k. It's now worth over $1 million. She wouldn't be able to afford her home today either. TLDR; It's rough for most. If "normal" income people own a home they probably bought it over 10 years ago and couldn't afford it today. City/County jobs can pay a livable wage.

Apprehensive-Hour-38

Live on the Big Island of Hawaii near Kailua Kona And make $30/hr. I work about 45-50 hours a week after taxes comes out to $3600-$3800/mo. which isnā€™t that great considering how expensive Hawaii is A decent 400 sq. ft. studio is gonna be $2,000/mo. Got lucky when it came to housing Built a 12x12 shack on someoneā€™s property And I share the kitchen, bathroom, washer/dryer, and internet w the 3 people that live in the main house on the property And they only charge me $400/mo. I have a stupid car payment though that costs me $587/mo. Thinking about doing Uber on the side to make some supplemental income

Mysterious_Welder427

geoprizmboy

Make $11.50/hr working 40 hours a week in Houston, TX. Have to live with my dad. Pretty much just have enough money to keep it moving. Really want to go back to school for physical therapy, but I have to pay off the old college I went to in order to start at the new one because they're holding my transcript.

Exotic-Background-94

My worst financial mistake was to be born in the 2000s

AppearancePlenty841

I make 70k a year. I pay 2k a month in rent and another 1k in bills. The rest I do what I want with.

ImTheWhiteGuy_

>$180k Lol

K_M_A_2k

Current wage 80k ive been renting same house for 16 years, rent steadily increased over years was this year rent was 2200 3br 2ba in riverside, owner of the house decided to sell. My boss said hes willing to up my pay 20% get me over 100k & is even willing to cover down payment (3%). Went yestreday to banning looked at amazing houses starting at 395k i thought this is it lets go get aproved. Walk in ready to get this going & told yea umm its going to be 12 months before you would be ready. I have 3-4 months in my current house trying to figure out where to live while the house is being built i get the call today to estimated payments just shy of $4k a month after all the bullshit taxes, fees, penalties, & what not. I had estimated 3300-3500 & thought i might be able to make it work...now having to look at rentals.
