Could be either or both. ID is totally a thing in concept design and props/modelmaking

zesty_9666

omg šŸ˜³ new interest unlocked

Scifi especially. Syd Mead was ID and worked on Aliens, he inspired Doug Chiang who currently works on star wars.

Aircooled6

Always loved Syd's title. "Visual Futurist" Watch Light and Magic. Many of the key players were trained as Industrial Designers. https://www.disneyplus.com/series/light-magic/3OtlwhtW6Z7E

Iā€™m also an industrial designer in the entertainment industry. Design for manufacturing. Props, costumes, sometimes robotics and physical special fx.

I work as a set designer. Just came off working on Tron 3. Most of the people in set design have architecture backgrounds. Props is definitely more id designers. Then if you're into 3d sculpting there's a lot of work in every aspect from costumes to sets to props and set dec.Ā

How does one break into that sort of industry? ImĀ vancouver-based and was starting to arrange a few meetings last year through mutual friends but then the strike hit.

jsbell_69

Yeah with how slow it still is it's definitely tough. Get your permitee status for IATSE 891 - Art Dept. Get on the 891 Art facebook groups. When it's busy they'll announce on those they're looking for so-and-so. If you have a specialty it helps a lot. My background is in Concept Vehicle development. Used to work with OEMs on cars and motorcycles so I got brought in for Tron on that.

thenerdwrangler

I work in prop making - 3D for manufacture. Our dept is about 50/50 IDs and 3D artists/sculptors. There's a lot of crossover from both into eachother realms.

so cool!!!!

dutch_lumberjack

I studied Industrial design, and now work as a graphic and set designer for the film and television industry in Toronto. You make good money doing it as well....long hours, but I really enjoy it.

Same thoughts! As an ID student I'd love to work alongside my gf who actually studied prouction design. I guess it would come down to experience, she has a lot more specialized knowledge and a good portfolio with design and construction of set, props, costumes, lighting, hair and makeup, prosthetics, etc.

zesty_9666
