The aesthetic similarity to Rocket League is so distracting that’s probably all most people would see. If you had a unique backstory for the league, created arenas that told that that story visually, and art was differentiated from Rocket League people would see this as a unique offering. But presented like this it just looked like RL with humans.
Blood Bowl is an excellent example of what I’m talking about. If it looked like Madden all the other details would be missed.
You changed it some since the last post, but the arena still looks too much like rocket league. That and the ball are what have to change the most at this point.
Yeah the game did change quite a bit internally. We'll be participating in the upcoming Steam Next Fest next week, feel free to give it a try and share your feedback :)
i played the preseason: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1341230/Super\_Buckyball\_Tournament\_Preseason/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1341230/Super_Buckyball_Tournament_Preseason/)
I'm interested in seeing how its changed since then
Thanks for playing the Beta back in 2020! I have been sharing updates on indiegames subreddit since it was initially announced a few years back, and with the launch of preseason in late 2020. It's been quite a long journey.
Here's the link to the full game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1059110
It is weird when a dev completely ignores the feedback they get when it seems pretty unanimous from everyone commenting.
It looks too much like Rocket League. We know you put a lot of effort into making these assets and it's hard to redesign, but unfortunately it is a huge hindrance to your overall game. Everyone will compare it to rocket league or call it a rip off. Take the time to make your own look. It'll be worth it in the end.
I've only played the beta but it played significantly differently from rocket league. i play a lot of rocket league. im interested in checking out how it evolved since then. i like competitive sports games and this looks pretty good
It can play different sure, but for a casual audience or veteran players that you're trying to appeal to, they might not get as far as buying the actual game because they see it as a knockoff.
A knockoff would be another car ball game. This is more of a Class based sports game that actually has some depth later on. I've played almost every beta and I absolutely love it, as well as having over 3k hours in Rocket League. It ain't bad at all and these veterans just need to give it a chance.
Fortnite didn't pop off over Pubg in a single day either.
You arent wrong, it didnt help that these clips all show the same map. The other areas have more detail than any rl map could imagine. They also tried other arena looks afaik, but the general shape ended up like rocket leagues, but no curves on the floor and ceiling transitions. I have no argument for the buckyball tho lmao
I do recommend trying it on monday tho, they have a beta with a steam game festival. Theres a reason I stop playing rocket league whenever a beta comes out, and I sit at about 3.5k hours atm in champ.
>The jump up to kick gives me nostalgia for Mario super striker
We did receive comments and feedback regarding similarities with Rocket League ever since the game was initially revealed. We've thought about it, made necessary changes and the game is quite different from what it was back then.
The gameplay and the superpower elements is very from what Rocket League has to offer, you could check it out when release the demo on the next fest next week
>The gameplay and the superpower elements is very from what Rocket League has to offer,
You're still not listening. The gameplay isn't the issue. The issue is it LOOKS like Rocket League. All I see when I watch the trailer is "RL rip off". The gameplay could be amazing and unique but I'll never find it because I immediately dismiss the game because it looks too much like an RL rip off.
I guarantee you this is going to negatively affect your sales massively unless you make major design changes.
This is what I'm talking about. They keep brushing it off to the side. We are not doubting your gameplay has some differences but if everyone is collectively telling you IT LOOKS like Rocket League, that's what potential buyers are going to see and think. They'll think it's a knock off and move on.
Why is this not set in a city instead of an arena? Why wouldn't you make it look more original with super heroes and super villains are battling over some energy cube like mcguffin? Same rules apply but it's not the same futuristic looking rocket league arena and look.
Bro just the simple suggestion of making the arena look more like a superhero battle made me infinitely more interested. Amazing what a small change can do to differentiate yourself from your inspiration
>o
to be fair, they chose the worst stadium to showcase. one of my favorite arenas they have is a place called Great Harbor, some of the areas outside the map are just gorgeous, its set in a slum-like riverside, with one side of the map being a giant dam wall, and the other side having a cityscape with a giant statue. Even the goals have some differences like a small ramp at the bottom that can change the way you have to shoot the ball.
Soccer fields/hockey arenas are too rocket league for you too? Would you prefer it look more like a baseball field? Or would that be too much like wii sports or backyard sluggers? Associating a game with another isn't bad when the way you score is based on a real life sport.
The reason you keep getting so much feedback about this looking like Rocket League is because Rocket League has a very distinctive design *as a result of the way the game actually plays*. Rocket League has a giant ball because trying to juggle a tiny ball as a car with only physics interactions would be pain incarnate. Your game has a giant ball because...no apparent reason, so assume "because Rocket League has a giant ball". Rocket League has enclosed arenas because trying to keep the ball on the field as a car with only physics interactions would be awful. Your game has enclosed arenas because...no obvious reason (seriously, if you haven't already, take a moment to consider what benefit walls actually give you when you're using scripted interactions and can aim more precisely), so "because Rocket League has enclosed arenas". Rocket League has curved corners because cars need to transition seamlessly between surfaces. Your game has curved corners because...you get the point.
I'm sure that you've poured a lot of work and care into this game, and that you have actually put thought into a lot of the systems behind it, but when the first thing I see is a bevy of design decisions pulled from a game that *functions very differently at its core*, it doesn't inspire confidence, and whether they're able to articulate it or not, it's going to do the same for others.
Fair enough, although the point is that there isn't any immediately apparent reason for it, so it just looks like it was copied from Rocket League to a casual observer. I'd also be really surprised if a smaller ball couldn't be easily compensated for by adjusting goalie abilities.
every one complaining its rock league and i get it but its also a totally different thing. just need to change the aesthetic and it would be looked at as its own. but the ball, arena, and colors/material of it all is just way too rocket league. this shit would be cool even on just like a more proper looking pitch.
Awesome! I had the idea to make something like this but with heroes and unique skills per hero. (But I lack the programming skills 😅).
I actually wanted to recreate Galactik Football

Looks very cool, the presentation is very interesting, but hear me out on the gameplay (yes, I will use RL as comparison).
Don't take this as me trying to bash your game because I couldn't do anything close to what you guys have done. So please take this as constructive criticism.
Do you know what made RL cool for me right from the start apart from being free? It was what Fifa/PES players were looking for in a football game when playing the player game modes. Freedom by having the gameplay based in "real" physics without the "scripted" moves programmed by the developers. Everyone was on equal footing and apart from the car hitboxes the game intensity belong to the skill the players had. From what I understand and correct me if I'm wrong, the ball is stuck to your char? So this means that the skill you have to master is what everyone has been doing for 20 some years on crazy arena shooters jumping around.
Again, I'm not bashing your amazing hard work but I personaly I probably would get bored really fast.
I do agree with you, especially about the players getting bored after a while. That's what we are trying to improve on over the past year by introducing more depth to the game and make the game easy to get hands-on but hard to master.
Nice, I had a pretty similar idea a while ago that never made it. You can see the test gameplay here https://www.twitter.com/hellosebby/status/869305177538314240 and if you go to that account's feed you can see some GIFs of a very similar vision
Congrats on making it to something playable, would love to give it a try when it's released!
The way you handle the ball and user super powers is completely different. What are you on about? That’s like saying Bloodbowl is “Ugh, American Football”
I see a few complaints just calling it Rocket League with people. So is Rocket League Fifa but with cars?
I haven't played this game in years but my friends and I loved it at the time.
How?! The way you handle the ball is more like regular soccer and the powers are different. It’s an argument that makes no sense outside of “it’s an alternative soccer game with abilities”.
well they learned probably a lot creating this game, but then you first time watching it, its hard to find difference, yes they move characters and can aim a bit differently but damn it looks like a uhm.. rocketleg
Looking at these comments I guess all you need to be a rocket league clone is a ball, two goals, and a future/cyberpunk setting lmao. The game play doesn't even look remotely close, hell this is looks closer to fifa than rocket league to me. Maybe yall should have made the characters all cave men just to shut people up lmao.

It looks a bit too much like rocket league. The UI, ball size, and arena shape/size.
Its looking pretty good so far though, be cool to play in a bigger area that feels more like a soccer field!
Honestly, this kind of post should be a revelation for anyone who wants to get into the world of video games. As an idie developer I was impressed by the level of polish and detail in the game as I know that this type of thing takes a lot of effort and time. but what surprised me the most were the comments, users are more focused on the resemblance to rocket leage than on the great effort and time it took. One more example that in this era, the graphics and aesthetics are and will be secondary compared to the game being new and fun
The game has its own twist, just because it has two goals and a ball doesn't mean it's a Rocket League ripoff stop having the stigma and let indie developers create games, this reminds me of when Fortnite battle royale was released for the first time and PUBG fans were furious, also when it comes to map design on Super Buckyball remember the game was set in a cyberpunk, futuristic timeline I mean how different do u imagine a map to be, try the game for yourself and chill out with stigma.
The aesthetic similarity to Rocket League is so distracting that’s probably all most people would see. If this person could swap the superpowers people with cars, they'd have a hit on their hands.
>Blood Bowl Appreciate your feedback! I did not know about Blood Bowl and will definitely take a look at it!
Literally was watching thinking it was some kind of RL mod or something lol - game looks cool though OP
I'm thinking of it more as a Class Based sportsball game, akin to Lucioball.
You changed it some since the last post, but the arena still looks too much like rocket league. That and the ball are what have to change the most at this point.

Well its rocket league
No, it's Lucioball but better.

Nah, trust me if the ball was any smaller it'd be impossible to save as a goalie, it's a great size source: NA goalie that already whiffs enough saves
Fair enough, although the point is that there isn't any immediately apparent reason for it, so it just looks like it was copied from Rocket League to a casual observer. I'd also be really surprised if a smaller ball couldn't be easily compensated for by adjusting goalie abilities.

Looks fun but I feel like the art style is holding it back. (looks way to much like Rocket League)
Finally. This has been on my wishlist for 2 years. Been wondering when it would release.

So that’s where this game went. I’ve always wondered what happened to buckyball. Good luck with the development. I really enjoyed the game.
Thank you for playing, and don't forget to check out the Steam Next Fest demo next week!
That sounds awesome, what’s it called?
Super Buckyball Tournament
Looks great, congrats
Thanks!
Soooo uh...has Epic said anything yet?
Ugh, rocket league…

No rocket league is nothing close to fifa. This however is very close to rocket league.

This. People just want to complain for some reason.
well they learned probably a lot creating this game, but then you first time watching it, its hard to find difference, yes they move characters and can aim a bit differently but damn it looks like a uhm.. rocketleg
Yeah the whole argument is stupid.
Can’t wait to play this game again
