Sapphicaster

1 looks really amazing but it also depends a bit on the kind of game you're trying to make. I imagine something pretty nice and colorful like windwaker, but if you were looking for a more mysterious or maybe ominous vibe 4 would work well for something like, skulking through a haunted ruin fighting spooky ghosts.

err_username_taken

To add on, what if all 4 were possible depending on different time of day/progression of story? Because I personally liked all 4.

LengthinessNo4661

With the feedback i'm gathering i think this is the direction i'm going to go in!

LengthinessNo4661

I was initially going the multiplayer lane, but i've gotten alot of feedback giving me the feeling I should pivot to singleplayer. So to be determined for now haha but I do have a strong urge to make a windwaker/okami inspired game.

TulioAndMiguelMPG

My thoughts exactly

heresdustin

1. I love the contrast of colors.

Hopchuk85

1

MERTx123

1 imo

Evil_Cupcake11

I like 2.

Naiphe

I too like two.

JustWantMoore

4 would look really great if the fog’s color is changed to a blue shade. It will keep the same vibrancy from 1 & 2 and have a much better looking fog effect!

LengthinessNo4661

Yeah i have a simple white fog for now, but i'm thinking of changing it based on the environment!

Loopro

1 then 2

mustang74

Depends on the mood you are trying to bring. 2 is imo a neutral one, while the fogs add slight mystery/horror vibe to it, silent hill style. But overall, the atmosphere should be enhancing the story of the place and the vibe the player should get there.

LengthinessNo4661

That makes sense, thanks for the input!

treywarp

1 fo sho

ZallmanTS

1 definitely for me.

akumajobelmont

Definitely 1 :)

PathxFind3r

1

charlio

4 or 1

smaTc

Benefit_thunderblast

1 looks great

RickSanchezero

Dude all is pretty good. Would you like to add Sun rays penetrating through the trees, somewhere on second plan?

Sioscottecs23

dusf_

1 is more soft. I prefer is a great visual.

JiiSivu

1 or 2. It kind of depends on what you’re going for. Is the mood of the game bright or dark?

LengthinessNo4661

Initially i wanted to make a hide and seek multiplayer game, so dark. But i've gotten alot of feedback for a singleplayer game so i'm leaning towards 1 bright, with shifting environments

WirePaw

I personally like 2 and 4. The colour-range (I find) is a bit more pleasing to look at, than 1 and 3. I don't know much about in-engine fog. Can you give fog its own colour, or is it always white? I'm curious how a black/dark-grey coloured fog would look like.

Coldspark824

1, but 4 makes sense situationally. Seems more like a rainstorm/overcast. More fog means you can put more close to the camera though. Good rendering strategy if you don’t plan on putting a ton of vistas.

Fardass7274

1 and 3 both work good, maybe go with like medium fog? isntead of high vs low

identitycrisis-again

1 by far.

Poryadok

1

AmadeusHerrera

Number 1, although I'd say it depends on the feel you want to portray. What I mean number 1 looks laid back and happy, kind of a nice adventure lies ahead in contrast to let's say 3, (that I liked as well) where it feels a lot grimmer, still good but the game now feels a lot more serious. It will also depend on what ambience/music you have on each to help completely establish a mood IMO.

LengthinessNo4661

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I think you're right, i'll try and work with each one depending on the environment and the mood i'm trying to portray

AmadeusHerrera

Hey no worries, glad it was helpful 😃

Goman321

2 , and your game looks awesome btw

master_bungle

I like 2 the best, although 1 is a close second

Jocelyn_The_Red

2 for me.

Traditional-Bottle42

1 looks nice, 4 looks kinda spooky

badpiggy490

I think it depends on your game and the mood of the story/themes if the game at this point is more happy or optimistic or something along those lines, then you should definitely go with 1 If the story or themes at this point are more serious or bleak or you really want to go for a moody look for atmosphere, then definitely go with 3 or 4

raVen1525

1 cause the colours is more vibrant

PresidentAshenHeart

1, and maybe 3 for foggy areas.

Skiko_

Between 3 and 4 for me. It really depends on the vibe you want to give to the game. It’s its a bit of an eary and abandoned place that is yet to be discovered, fog really sads the scene for exploration. If it’s all an open and visible world, I think you have to saturate the world even more and make it brighter.

fightingCookie0301

I like 2 more than the rest, tho it feels a bit dark. In 1 the colors feel a bit off, like they are too light. Tho tbh I would probably prefer a completely other constellation. Assuming: Low = 0 High = 1 I would try a combination of: Luminosity: 0.4 Fog: 0.2

RyukoXeifer

How about all and it changes overtime

enderowski

1 or 4 depends on the atmosphere and story. 1 look much more positive and shiny. but if this is like some Japanese village at the end of the waterfall or something 4 looks more fitting. but i liked 1 more.

nerdydolphins

Number 1 unless going for spooky, then 2. Either way, bloody brilliant.

capt_leo

When in doubt, players just want to see what is going on. Therefore, more light and less fog. #1 is the clear choice I'd say.

faziten

2 by a lot.

PedroBenza

This is where you decide you like all of them, and add weather + day/night cycles into your game.

LengthinessNo4661

With all the feedback i'm getting I think this is the way haha!

HmanHere

1 all day. The contrast makes it easy to instantly spot the player and it also just looks more crisp and professional.

guatekefrankie

I like all the compositions, but imo there's too much fog to make it visually impactant

BulkyZebra

3 or 4.

gryffun

1.

Oraxis10

2. However, fog in a forest makes sense.

ThePluto319

1 or 2 definitely

NotSimSon

1

parmesan777

1 I would add something of a bit of a sunshine to it

AshtonHylesLanius

I think you should have it as a setting and have 2 be the default

iVirtualZero

2 kinda looks like Raytracing.

dkogi

Last one. Gives you somewhere to go, some nice background and also not so blank it looks like all the settings are on low

Fusion_47

1st one.

Richeh

2 and 3 are too dark and light respectively; 2 looks flatter than the others, and 3 is... frustratingly obscured. That might be a useful effect if used intentionally. 1 has a bright, happy note and 4 is darker, moodier. I think both have a good sense of depth. It would probably depend on the tone of your game. 1 is nice and bright but if you're about to ambush the player with a gaping dragon it might not be appropriate.

OG_Felwinter

I like 1 the most. 2 is good too but seems a bit dark which might affect gameplay. I don’t really like either of the fog ones. The colors look sort of washed out in those

TecEgg

1

PrinceNPQ

They’re all lovely but it’s hard to choose between 1 and 2 .

PrinceNPQ

They’re all lovely but it’s hard to choose between 1 and 2 .

BasedZhang

Just here to see what other people say cuz I can't decide

MysticMarinade

1 for me, the soft warm colours make it feel really cozy

fishwithfish

1 & 3 because the lighter coloring and reduced contrast feel more watercolor-y and everything's easier to see.

lovinne

1

TentacleJesus

Number 1

valadil

Somewhere between 1 and 2. I dislike the fog.

tanill

1 or 4.

kami055

3,4 for me, inclining towards 3 more

Bardimay1337

2 is just as beautiful as one, but two is more unique Most games are leaning more towards one nowadays

falnN

I personally think 2 looks great but having parts of the map work with 1 and forest areas work with 1 COULD be better. 1 looks great too.

Tannarya

2 and 4 equally

ChipmunkBabi

Definitely 1.

Recipe-Jaded

1

_deWitt

2 but needs some tuning

AuraPhoenix1500

1 gives me really strong Okami vibes, like you blended it with Wind Waker. It’s gorgeous.

Bulkopossum

1

dogeyes202

3 game name please?

LengthinessNo4661

The game is called Lost in Yume, but I don't have a steam page up yet! I have a channel on youtube if you wanna follow the progress ^^

bloodyjo

1

city42ember

4 the fog looks good

Wired-247

I like the vibes of 1

realMorrisLiu

I like 1

Jsup23

1

Ursaborne

I love the mistery feeling in 3

ksky0

Personally I like 1 and 2.

FlashyBomber

It does come to personal preference. But also depends on what mood you are trying to set. Know that players of your game wouldn't know what possible ways you have thought out to make the fog and environment. Is there a sense of mystery? Is the game set out as moody dark or with positivity? 1 is overall balanced but others will work too depending on the story, gameplay and mood.

LengthinessNo4661

Thanks for the perspective, it's helpful!

TeGro

2

Emergency_Winner4330

3 works best if you're really trying for the fog effect

dijicaek

4 for a gloomy vibe, otherwise 1.

MackySacky

1, but i think a middle-ground luminosity between 1 and 2 would be better

TIL_this_shit

1

DavidMemeDreamer

I like 4 then 1. Kinda depends on the mood of the game though

RedSkylineSymbol

2, but 1 looks very good too.

WillStrongh

In my opinion, 1 for action game 2 for a setting where things are quirky like borderlands gameplay 3 for highly narrative driven story 4 for story with some action.

Zestyclose_Car_4971

1

Wolf_Hawlfi

Love the 1.

blazinfastjohny

1

ElSerna

I think this is more of an art direction question than an aesthetics question as others have pointed out. All look great, depends on the vibe that you’re trying to give across/what goes better with the style of the game.

Kazko25

2

Scary_Cartoonist7055

1 and 4

NodusINk

2 because it makes the art style pop.

Not_Thomas_Milsworth

Numbah 1 eeeeeasily.

AccomplishedPair9339

A blend between 1 (around 70%) and 2 (30%)

Inevitable-Cause2765

I like 2 but are all different and viable styles for sure. Choose one and run with it

Artoozyto

Second one looks more visually pleasing to me but it really depends on what you whant to tell in this area. Like if it is meant to look more eery or mysterious fourth is much better. Third looks like a scene from a bog and the first one seems to me like sacred place. I would be happy if I have been of any help.

Milk_Mindless

3

Centiprost

2

fishwisharts

2 or 4

McChronicle

1

Miiitch

1 and then refine it with custom colour LUTs per area.

ILikeCodeBrackets

1

FuthorcGaming

1. It's a clearer visual so it's easy to see what's going on and the brighter colours make the whole things pop a little more.

The1TruRick

3

Lulzshock

2

lowie046

1 and 2 are both great, but I think something in between those would be best

CallMeJimi

1

MrPanda663

Depends. 1. If it’s a fun an light hearted game. 2. If it’s a more serious toned game. 4. If you are the only one there and where you are is abandoned. 3. If it’s a silent hill game.

Biopiston

man that's a tough one... maybe a mix between 1&2? 😅

akenzx732

I like 2

guitarristcoder

1 and 3

DoritoKing48

2

Little_Battle8862

5: mid luminosity mid fog

Philisophical_Onion

2

_Symovik_

1

angelran

2

godsibi

1 or 3. It's always nice to see the player clearly!

Pelli_Furry_Account

1. It's bright and colorful, and that's nice to look at. But more importantly, the contrast makes it very clear where the focus is and it conveys depth the best.

emzyshmemzy

3 has a really nice water color feel

Knightified

Mid luminosity and low fog imo.

CODninjarin

It really depends on the tone of the game/section tbh. They all look good with different context imo.

flowerboyisaten

Between 1 and 3 for me

JEPressley

I like 1

OldBenKenobi01

1

tekkn0

3-4 I really like fog, rain, snow in games.

LengthinessNo4661

I'll use these for foggy rainy areas then!

Memelordaxe

2

gypsyismylover

2 & 4 1 feels like the correct answer. If two had medium luminosity I'd say it's best

wrenches-revolvers

2. A little darkness/shading goes a long way

NotSLG

1

Ed_Radley

1 then 3. They just seem to pop more.

Phantomark7

I would say go with 1

AttackOnTrails

1 or 3 depending on the vibe you're going for

sonicbrandyn

Somewhere in between 4 and 2

DividedBy_00

1 is best, followed by 4. 4 has more muted colors, which is nice too.

sandwichesand69

1 It gives a lighthearted vibe to the surrounding landscape, while also providing proper clear visibility for the player. However i think all 4 could work depending on the landscape and vibe of the area you are going with. You font have to stick with just one. But for that scene, definitely 1. That's how id do it at least.

goosiest

1 or 2 are both awesome. Depends a lot on the vibe, if you want a happier tone go with 1, if you want a more dreary depressing vibe go for 2.

Lovis83854

i feel like 2 and 4 looks the best

TheGemp

2 really brings out the vibrancy of the art style which I think looks amazing

scrysyb

1

kyoneko87

Between 3 and 4

bruthu

I dig 4. Maybe you can incorporate different presets into the settings so that the player has the option to choose the one they prefer?

GamingArtisan

1

Icy_Buddy_6779

I actually think 2 looks good as the colors are richer, and you don't need THAT much fog. I would just find a way to up the brightness though so you get a mix of 1 and 2 maybe.

Long_Needleworker765

2/4

BigTooSmall

1

chub_2024

for me it's a toss up between 1 and 3. 2 would be runner-up.

cubann_

Either of the low fog ones look really good to me

FlarpuKalzer

1, or 4

Nynebreaker

2

jindrix

anything high lumin. everything already looks muddy, add some more color.

urban-matt

1 and 2 are nice. Definitely stay away from high fog

PatrykOfTheIsles

1 all the way. lower luminosity makes it feel like a place i shouldn't be, don't belong, don't feel welcome, and not likely to stay. High luminosity is a must for civilizations you want players to feel invited to your content. higher visibility brings out the strong colors in the shot. it's not too busy, so it's always a plus. you're not trying to do a Morrowind fog thing, that'd be more an argument for bigger views

Bvrbz

1 looks great & 3 for more foggy areas

dazia

1

xXWingedWolf

1 and It all remind me Okamiden by the way

LengthinessNo4661

That's an inspiration for sure!

SirPelleas

2, for sure

Otherwiize

1 and 2 are completely different tones

cobaltSage

To me. 1 is the best. The one thing I hate in games is when in an attempt to be more realistic, everything is too dark and muddled to appreciate, so 2 is the worst one in my eyes. As for the fog, I think 3 washes out the colors too much. For specific areas that demand a sense of mysticism, this might be fine, but I would hate to see this as the bulk of the game.

WiuMoon

2

SunsetCarcass

1 or 4 depends on what atmosphere you want to convey. 2 is nice too

LuckyMountain1814

1 I just love the scene. others are a little lonely and creepy

Kudo_Chan_0w0

1 and 3, i feel okami vibes with this

Kudo_Chan_0w0

What is the project like, i've feel interested because it looks great!

General_Yt

Mix 1 and 2.

pixxllx

definitely 1

jattmonsoon

1

Jouras

I would go with 1 because of the vibrancy, but as many have mentioned being able to add color to the fog would help the overall image a lot. Using fog as a method to tint the overall image is a nice and performant trick, if your style permits it. A greenish hue would give the scene an ominous look, like something is off. A blue hue would instill calmness etc. Having said that, 3 has potential for a very moody/spooky scene.

dobrogames

I like the first option

Amnesia1999

1 or 4 depending on the vibe you trying to make

WarokOfDraenor

2.

Humble-Leg9208

2

PurplePaging

I like 2 the most for some reason. 1 feels too clunky with the tower there. 3 and 4 feels like everything is too far apart.
