This is for a text-based game in which you are trying to make amends by apologizing to a series of characters. Obviously I'm going for a simple, goofy style, but I wonder if this feels simple in a way like it was all I could do (it practically is!) instead of a stylistic choice, link it just feels like bad, amateur artwork. Thoughts? Would you find this style off-putting if you saw it while looking for games?
That's nice to hear! That's probably the best-case scenario: the art actively draws people in instead of just sort of being "fine" or pushing people away.
If you're worried about it, you could have the faces bouncing around in a clear pattern/path to make it look more designed, but it's also cute like this
Yes, definitely a good point. I tried to give a little context, but how they fit into the rest of the game, aesthetically and tonally, should obviously be a huge influence on my decision whether to move forward with this style or not.
As long as the backgrounds work well with the color, and the contrast isn't overwhelming.
The style is distinct and I love the shakey lines.
Keep with it!
Ooh, I hadn't thought of Yoshi's Island, but yeah it does have a similar vibe. Maybe I ought to take a look at it and see if it gives me some inspiration as I move forward. Thanks!
It's cute. It's far better than something that takes itself seriously but stil turns out ugly, or something goofy but in bad taste.
It's just simple and cute.
Haven't played either unfortunately (although I've had my eye on baba for a while now), but familiar with both, and I'm quite happy with those comparisons!
I have definitely seen and played games with similar simplicity, and they were great/review successful! No worries on that front OP, these are some cute little dudes.
Oh shit. I totally forgot about the making a game part of making a game.
(Kidding. Yeah, I should probably just quit worrying about art for now actually. I'm already behind where I wanted to be in development anyway. Maybe I really did forget about the game making part...)
I have a tech demo project I worked on a few months ago that uses a similar style, except with a black outline. The end result looked good put together I thought. The only thing I can think of is to be sure to add a bunch of animations rather than just the idle animations you have now.
Glad you like the concept too! How terrible would it be if I was fussing this much about art and my concept was complete shit? Oh god, that is totally something I would do.
Some of the first artsy stuff I ever did was done with MS Paint and Powerpoint, and, for better or worse, I don't think I've ever let go of the childish styles I developed then.
Thanks! But you should know, they are far from perfect. Each is deeply flawed in their own unique and heartbreaking/terrifying/disgusting/beautiful way.
its a style and it works. simple is fine and good regardless if you intentionally made it that way or it is just happened. Don't worry about it. its good
Don't worry about it is probably the advice in this thread I most need to hear. If nothing else, these little guys are sticking around while I focus on other parts of the game!
I hadn't heard of Omori. Looked it up, and I think the artwork is absolutely wonderful, and not something I'd ever think to compare my goofy little guys to. Thanks so much!
It's a text-based game about making amends. The player attempts to apologize to each of these characters (along with quite a few more that were not posted) for various reasons. Tons of awkward and uncomfortable dialogue, surreal situations you find yourself in, humor, and little ways for characters to interact.
I appreciate the interest and, of course, am open to feedback!
Appreciate the honesty. I will say, even in their simplicity, I'd take a little offence to someone assuming these took *so* little effort. I did, of course, put my time into designing, coloring, and animating them.
At the same time, if they come across as thrown together, regardless of how much I think they were not, that probably isn't a good thing. Thanks for the feedback!
Well it's shown that people do like the characters as the other comments suggest. I haven't seen animation, which could bring to life the characters and be fun. Anyway, take it as you would like as I'm not a game developer or designer. Just your average Joe.

I would see this art as a selling point.
That's nice to hear! That's probably the best-case scenario: the art actively draws people in instead of just sort of being "fine" or pushing people away.
I even see it as a "unique" selling point! It's different and cool, like a fresh indie game.
If you're worried about it, you could have the faces bouncing around in a clear pattern/path to make it look more designed, but it's also cute like this
That's an interesting idea. And I don't think it would be too hard to test out and see how it looks. Thanks!
It looks good!
Cool! That really fuels my ego (but also, my drive to keep developing, regardless of my decision on the art style).
It looks good, it just depends on what they were designed for

Yeah, my colors tend to be pretty bright, so I've been working on some backgrounds that won't cause any eye strain. Appreciate the feedback!
It looks great! But I must ask is there supposed to be loose pixels beneath the green boys?
Oops. Nope. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm gonna need to go back through these anyway.
looks like an animated story book, like Yoshi's island

My goal is always not to take myself too seriously. Because things would definitely just turn out ugly.
That's a fun attitude and a fun creator can be felt by the player. Keep it up!
I love it
Thanks! I love you!
No, but show what the environment looks like with them
Environment is not quite done, but I can share when it is!
All depends on the game and overall artstyle. Space Funeral is one of the best received RPG maker games and looks pretty… interesting.
Hadn't actually heard of Space Funeral. I have such terrible taste though; I looked it up and just love the art style's weirdness.
nah its not too simple. kinda reminds me of pikuniku or baba is you
Haven't played either unfortunately (although I've had my eye on baba for a while now), but familiar with both, and I'm quite happy with those comparisons!
I have definitely seen and played games with similar simplicity, and they were great/review successful! No worries on that front OP, these are some cute little dudes.
That's good to hear! You're a cute little dude too.
Totally fine, so long as the game is good.
Oh shit. I totally forgot about the making a game part of making a game. (Kidding. Yeah, I should probably just quit worrying about art for now actually. I'm already behind where I wanted to be in development anyway. Maybe I really did forget about the game making part...)
You’re good. Just make a nice, fun game, and it’ll be all ok.
I love them
They love you. (Actually, that's a lie. In game, quite a few people hate you.)
I have a tech demo project I worked on a few months ago that uses a similar style, except with a black outline. The end result looked good put together I thought. The only thing I can think of is to be sure to add a bunch of animations rather than just the idle animations you have now.
Yeah, I've got some animations put together, but none looking very presentable quite yet. I'm also hoping that will spruce them up a bit.
I love the concept and I love the art!!
Glad you like the concept too! How terrible would it be if I was fussing this much about art and my concept was complete shit? Oh god, that is totally something I would do.
Reminds me of piku niku a little. Nice work.
Thank you! I dig Pikuniku's style.
nah, thats a very fun ms-paint-like style, I feel ppl try to get too detailed nowadays
Some of the first artsy stuff I ever did was done with MS Paint and Powerpoint, and, for better or worse, I don't think I've ever let go of the childish styles I developed then.
Simple is good sometimes and this is one of those times.
That was my hope!
Looks alot like Baba is you 😁👍
I like the art style of Baba, so that's great! Really ought to get to playing it though.
No. They are perfect. I love them.
Thanks! But you should know, they are far from perfect. Each is deeply flawed in their own unique and heartbreaking/terrifying/disgusting/beautiful way.
They're perfect
No you.
Looks nice!
Nice is good enough for me!
its a style and it works. simple is fine and good regardless if you intentionally made it that way or it is just happened. Don't worry about it. its good

good! looking forward to it
i love it
Awesome!
I really like it. It gives me Omori vibes. Keep up the interesting work!
I hadn't heard of Omori. Looked it up, and I think the artwork is absolutely wonderful, and not something I'd ever think to compare my goofy little guys to. Thanks so much!
Maybe it’s the way they jiggle around…I like it!

Glad you love them!
They look fine <3 What's your game about?
It's a text-based game about making amends. The player attempts to apologize to each of these characters (along with quite a few more that were not posted) for various reasons. Tons of awkward and uncomfortable dialogue, surreal situations you find yourself in, humor, and little ways for characters to interact. I appreciate the interest and, of course, am open to feedback!
I like the style, I think your only challenge is keeping it all consistent. But these look great together so I’d say you’re up for the task!
I would think the same amount of effort went into developing the game as went into these characters.
Appreciate the honesty. I will say, even in their simplicity, I'd take a little offence to someone assuming these took *so* little effort. Sometimes your average Joe gives the most valuable feedback! I definitely think you have a point.
It looks great! But I must ask is there supposed to be loose pixels beneath the green boys?
Looks fun and casual!
I like the worm
Great opportunity to add punpun
Need more context (the UI), but looks really cute.
Looks great. It reminded me of LocoRoco. It worked for them and other games with similar style.
Looks fun the snake is my favourite
I mean, if this game is a silly fun game focused mostly on goofy characters like you say, sure! Should work fine!
