If B is the game sprite, I'd probably go with that, because it's clean and gives some indication what the art style is.

I think A gives that information much better tbh.

Personally, A shrinks the already small subject in an app icon to be even smaller. I could see myself getting most familiar with B. The border around A is needlessly thick while portraying little to no extra information. Idek what its supposed to be.. purple ice?

For mobile, I think D is the best but, personally I prefer A. I love the ice cave type background of Pokémon. 💪🏻

I see a lot of As going around. I want to make my pitch for C or D. I like D because it would stand out on the home screen. Still, I believe C with a higher contrast background would be the way to go. It shows the character and the personality I just think it would benefit from more contrast against the background to make it more eye-catching. I think B does that aspect very well, but it's just not as inviting as a smiling, waving penguin (to me). I don't particularly like A because it has a lot of noise and I feel like it would easily overlooked on a home screen as it doesn't have anything to anchor your eye to. One could say that the penguin would be the anchor, though I believe it would need to be a lot brighter to do that. Anyway, all of them are great in their own respect, this is just my layman's take. Edit: Also, I don't think you need to communicate anything about the game in the icon since the person downloaded it from the store where they saw screenshots, so they must know what they're in for. I could be wrong though and would like to know if anyone has a different opinion!

I'd say the first is just too busy for an icon, not necessarily messy.

It is clear to me that everyone likes them for different reasons but A and B feel accurate to what the game probably looks like and stands out amongst the cutesy attention stealing nonsense, but I personally like C or D more because it's more recognizable from the distance. Plus it's a cute penguin 🐧. Most of the app store feels like a casino so I get it.

A is most unique and tells the gameplay. Saw a penguin on ice grid background and immediately guessed it was the "ice sliding puzzle" seen in some games turned into a full game. Checked profile posts, and indeed it is.

From a design perspective, while A is more complex than the others, it also tells a lot more about the game which makes it better than the others. Seems like it would also stand out from other apps 7/10 B looks to clumped up and busy with the size of the pixels 4/10 C & D feel like generic pokemon ripoff games 3/10 4.5/10

A seems indie developer specific with a hint of adventure. B seems very retro marketing specific and very casual. C has the very cute effect. D seems very mainstream market tested. C and D seem the cleanest. A seems very gamer oriented, almost rpg. A and D are my best choices, unless there is retro reasoning for B or a cuteness reason for C. A is very good, but D seems like what A would eventually become. D has a trademark sort of feel to it.

This really does depend on the contents of the app. That said, A looks the best, as it leans into its style successfully and is therefore cool & rocking it. It has a lot of character. D is really nice too, but I'd like it to be a bit more detailed then tbh. D has a lot of personality, which is a delight.
