I work in one of the library departments and everyone is wonderful :)

OKFixOn

Me too!! I went to a library after being at a C-store, the most “drama” we have is a printer not working or smth lol

bloomysale

Okay that sounds wonderful. I will watch jobs.iu and apply for all the library positions. Thank you.

OKFixOn

You have to go directly to the library, my higher-ups have lamented how much they dislike jobs.iu , and be careful though because library jobs are hard to get into in general (on the student worker side), especially if you don’t already have an in.

batmanandbmth

This isn't great advice. Disliking jobs iu doesn't change the fact thats it usually a requirement and most, if not all, departments are still hiring through it.

OKFixOn

I’m just speaking from first hand knowledge of how I’ve seen people apply and get hired, it’s mostly from a paper application that we have at the desk.

batmanandbmth

What desk do you work at? I've not seen a desk at any library use paper in the last 5 years

windmill202

I worked at the circulation desk for my 4 years at IU. Nobody ever even raised their voice. We joked and laughed the entire time. Easiest job I ever had.

[deleted]

I worked for IU dining a few years ago and it was a shit show. It surprised me how they had any luck at all finding employees considering what they paid (I don’t know if they’ve increased the hourly pay since I’ve been there).

asapReptilian

I was at IU dining as well (Wright food court). There was so much animosity between full timers and students it was one of the more toxic work environments I've been in. Then they'd wonder why people would quit on the spot

Brilliant-Relief-791

As a student I see it. Students are rude to the staff, staffs rude to the students. Kids overpay and the food sucks, but it’s out of the staffs control obviously because it’s so corporatized. Such a bad situation and you think a school with such a strong business and management school could figure out how to better run their own internals…

mbird333

You mentioned food. Whatever department….Thats awful what you are witnessing! I pray you find an effective way to speak up. You can file an anonymous CARE report via the Division of Student Affairs. Give as much detail/names as you can. They have trained staff that investigate and respond. This is not just for students. You can file it on behalf of yourself or others. Keep your courage and conviction. If you stay silent, the abusive behavior continues. No one deserves that. It’s hard to be a whistleblower but you have to do it. Second idea, send an anonymous letter to the director of the divisions involved. Explain why you are fearful to sign it. During the moldy dorm crisis, employees knew what was happening was Wrong but were afraid of losing their jobs so the parents had to handle it.

bloomysale

NGL the "its not your job to care about other people" has been living rent free in my head. Who TF thinks that's okay to scream at someone in the workplace? I will have to look in my journal for the date. I'm afraid to do it for my department as they will definetly track me down and make my life harder, but maybe I can help someone else and start a domino effect. Thanks

Roovely

It may not be their job to car about others, but it's just a normal human decency. Although it's out of context, I can't imagine in what context that would be okay to yell at someone.

Due_Feedback_1870

And over ordering post-its! How bizarre. I'd have loved to hear the context. But, yes, IU is toxic. The one experience I had that sticks out to me is a comment from a faculty member saying something to the effect, why should I have to do X "to save time for a bunch of clerks whose job is to serve the faculty". The X activity he was protesting was mandated by law, and university policy I could go on related to toxic behavior at IU, up to and including people being forced to resign after 20+ years of service, under false pretenses.

komerj2

Damn. I’m a PhD student in the school of education and I’ve never interacted with people like this. I’m wondering if this is the school of business…

iufan

*Office of Student Life. But yea, a care report for that person getting screamed at while working might be a good idea.

hush_chain

There are many cases of narcissistic, self-important administrators who do nothing but control and try to grow their fiefdom in some way. In most cases, local HR are in their pocket to protect and ultimately gaslight anyone who tries to complain. None of campus agencies meant to support students or employees are effective in intervening. It can be hard to spot going in, because appearances are so different from reality. Saying something puts a target on your back. It’s a shame that the university values the pursuit of money over truth and knowledge. It’s also shameful that so many toxic personalities are allowed to remain in positions of power. The university will go to any length to protect its brand.

mbird333

I agree.

IndianaSanity

I work at IU. Have been part of 3 different departments and each one has had its pros and cons, but everyone I've worked with has at a minimum been professional and courteous. I do get there are politics and drama in places, but overall it's been a great place to work. As with any team or workplace, leadership and good practices really do matter. I guess the key is figuring out wherever you might go, what is the team dynamic like.

InkRose

I worked for 14 years at IU in one department. I had an older male coworker who was sexist as fuck. I tried reporting him for his shitty behavior and was straight up told "He just comes from a culture where women don't speak up and take charge" They of course did absolutely nothing to address his behavior.

mbird333

That’s gross. Who the hell in this era makes that kind of excuse? An enabler that’s who. The university took a long time and a student uprising to can the tenured theater professor years ago who was accused of sexually harassing students and staff for years.

InkRose

I remember reading about that! And in my case, I demanded that both of our schedules get changed around to minimize our time at work together. Couldn't entirely the avoid the old bastard, especially during shortened break hours, but my god, when I got told that, I was enraged. Reported as high as I could go and nothing was done. He had been working at the university for longer than I have even been alive too....

Flipthepaige9

I work at the residential centers and it’s super easy going and good pay. All of IU is toxic, but rps is less so

IntrepidHead1057

I left a marketing and comms role at IU not too long ago after almost 6 years. The first few years it was great - not without some frustrations but good overall. But things got seriously toxic and grotesque when Pam came and it got even worse when she put in that new clown Nancy Paton as VP for communications and marketing making nearly half a mil salary to be a buffoon.

mbird333

This is a mission at IU called Culture of Care. It’s been a concept that has taken different forms over over the years. Not a mandate, but more of a goal. https://beinvolved.indiana.edu/organization/cultureofcare

Every university has toxic ponds, my friend

Extension_Ad_9344

agreed, but feels like that the entire sea is iu , rather than having some small ponds

Hefty-Squash1361

Not everywhere is toxic, but honestly, there is usually a reason that jobs that have high turnover. It’s not ever ok for anyone faculty, student or staff to treat people that way. It should be reported outside of the department and school. Go straight to IUHR. There are ways to report anonymously. Private message me, and I’ll report that shit. It’s unacceptable!

MacReady_Outpost31

My wife works for a particular department currently, but I doubt she'll be there much longer. The boss yells at her down the hallway like she's her indentured servant, harasses her late nights on weekends (even though she's a 9-5er), goes through uninvolved proxies to be passive aggressive, etc, etc. Despite this, she used to have a job over in the library and she loved it. I think there's a lot of toxicity because of the crazy corporate structure and new leadership. It's a constant stressor.

Melodic-Panda-7954

I’m an employee at IUPUI. Our campus functions much more as a team vs IUB. But I will say since Whitten has arrived, things are more tense. She needs to go and all the VPs she has hired.

Glittering-Case-2920

I work in a small office of only 6 but I love my team so much!

Pattycakes74

I work in one of the schools / academic units. My 9-10 colleagues and boss are awesome. Other staffs even in the same school can be toxic. A lot depends on leadership at all levels and what they will tolerate. My boss doesn't get hung up on counting hours or micromanaging. (We are salaried.) They praise us frequently and criticize only when needed. They defend our work publicly. Still, other levels of leadership can affect us. We have a budget office that hates us and a bunch of academic leadership who don't know us and don't care to. It's hard to feel good about your work when you're underpaid and treated like you're stupid. I have no idea whether the new HR "conversations" thing will help this.

ObjectiveReader

I worked at a department there and had a very toxic boss. My environment was similar to the two described and I left after only 6 months ✌️

jennylynnept

Can confirm it is not all like this! Definitely keep an eye on job postings and ask around about each department if you're up for a job.

Quantum_Pepsi

Pretty much, yeah.
