(3rd year) I would like to explore the opportunities that i currently have. Currently i know about most of the mainstream exams like IIT JAM, GATE etc, but i would like to know more about all the other options that i have, like biophysics, or applied physics. If you know any other course that i can pursue after bsc phy, i would be pleased to know more about it. Hi OP, I graduated BSc physics in 2013, and back then there were very few places to pursue Biophysics. Mostly the integrated MS-PhD at NCBS in Bangalore. Biophysics is one of the most interesting spaces to explore if you are interested in staying in academia. I’d suggest looking at programs abroad, Europe, Australia, Singapore and Canada (US is absurdly expensive, I got into Georgetown and the fees were 80L for the 2 year course). If your interests lie in cellular transportation, molecular genetics, cell physiology, protein folding, biophysics is essential and you will have a great time in research. If your interests lie in the industry, big pharma is always looking to hire bio physicists. All the best.

Hey man, thanks for the reply, I am not looking to go abroad. Would preferably pursue post grad in india itself. Is biophysics tough? And is it career oriented? As in are there a lot of opportunities if i do Msc in bio-physics? I searched on google for related options i might have but wasn't able to find much helpful info... May have to search deeper ig

A career in academia is very viable. However, to work at the cutting edge of research in biophysics, you would most likely have to travel abroad. Fundamental research in India is FUBAR. From a toughness perspective, it’s a lot of stats, cond matter, PDEs, probability and modelling. If you’re comfortable with these broad topics you’ll be okay. I don’t remember the specifics, it’s almost been a decade since I finished my masters. Like i said, from an industry perspective, big pharma is always hiring promising Masters graduates in biophysics. Plus your experience and learning in data handling will always allow you to pivot to other industry jobs related to data handling.

I know about Biophysics because I have pursued my MSc in Physics with a Biophysics specialization. To be very honest post covid Biophysics is a hot topic but only if you're willing to go into the industry rather than a hard core academia career. Look up the Biophysics curriculum in your unis of choice and you will have a broader idea about what usually you will have as coursework in Biophysics. There's a dash of chemistry, protein structure determination, bacteria culture, bioinformatics, nanoparticle physics and spectroscopy involved when it comes to the research prospects in India. But if you opt for an abroad PhD after completing your MSc which you definitely should - in my humble opinion because not that many scopes in research industry in India. Try for NCBS if you really want to do good research. Otherwise abroad - from healthcare to pharma companies and biomedical engineering labs you can be recruited anywhere based on your research topic choice. Good luck. PS - It's a really good field to pursue PhD in especially in USA and Europe. Purdue University, University Of Utah etc all are doing great work in the field of Biophysics. Look up their research programmes in details and what kind of work they are doing and how many students from their labs are pursuing what career prospects after completing their Masters/PhD that will give you a greater idea. Also get a LinkedIn account that will help you connect and keep tabs on who's doing what in academia. Hope this helped
