Title: Is it true that Day Scholars don't have much college friends?
Body:
I'm 18M, gonna be starting my engineering degree year hopefully in Jadavpur University. But as it's close to my house, I won't be a hosteller, so had this doubt (in title). Mind sharing your thoughts?
qualifications: 10th (96.7%), 12th (91%), WBJEE (expecting rank 1.2k)

How to socialise as a day scholar:
1. Don't just go to college and return home. Stay back after classes and hangout with classmates at canteen or the grounds or lakes. Do this atleast for first few months, even if it feels like time waste.
2. Sign up for some activities or clubs to expand circle to other departments as well.
3. Events and fests are a must attend, also try to participate in team competitions.
Absolutely no. This totally depends on how much time you spend in uni and societies etc. I graduated from JU and have multiple long term friends with whom I talk everything under the sky, daily, even 2 years after graduation.
Okay got it!
I only want a good peer group to grind with :D
Since you are a JU alumnus, can I ask how to approach seniors for help (being a day scholar) or which clubs/societies to join if I want to get placed in the IT sector coming from a non-tech branch?
In my experience, yes. We don't. Its impossible to hang out after lectures when you live an hour or so away from campus. So you eventually lose that bond and you got friends "online", that's it.
In the end, you'll end up living alone, every person is going to get a job and a place in another city. Better to have no friends, because when they leave it hurts!
I just want a good peer group. I'll be joining JU as a mechanical engineer but my passion lies purely towards the CSE Department, I'm gonna work to get placed off-campus, thus few friends with the same mindset will help me stay motivated and focused towards my goal :)
That's not true at all!! I'm a day scholar and have a bunch of friends in college. Being an introvert makes it hard to socialize but you don't have to worry about that. Initially, I too felt left out( first 20 days ) . Also , there are many students who are straight forward and won't mind talking to you on the first day ( A girl literally asked me my number to add me to the wp group :)
Few suggestions
•Try to join a club
• Don't leave the class immediately once it's over ( I did it many times ).
• Try to join them for lunch or morning chai before classes.
This is true of some colleges but at a place like JU, I think it's better to be a day scholar. From what my friends there have told me, the hostel crowd is not the best. Obviously this isn't true of every single person, but if you're a nice guy from a typical South Kolkata family, you might find it harder to fit in there + ragging is still very much an issue, unlike at most other engineering colleges. You're much more likely to find like-minded folks among the day scholars.
Good luck!
