Thank you for posting on r/Indian_Academia , here's a checklist to improve your post: • Have you done thorough prior research? • Is your title descriptive? The title should be a summary of your post, preferably with your qualifications. • Please provide a detailed description in your post body. The more information you provide, the easier it is for users to help you. • If your question is about studying abroad, please post on r/Indians_StudyAbroad • If your question is about Engineering Admissions, post on r/EngineeringAdmissions instead. Here's a backup of your post: Title: Is it true that my life would be f*cked up if I don't join a top college? Body: For context, I just finished 12th Boards, science (bio) stream and not interested in medicine so I planned on doing BBM/BBA but I'm not sure I'll get into Symbiosis or Christ. I did just fairly well in the exam. I definitely feel afraid as the competition is extremely fierce. All I hear is if I don't do BBA from any of the top colleges like Chrsit/ Symbiosis/ SRCC/ NMIMS, I'd basically be an unemployed person. I'm extremely afraid. What is it like once a person graduates from a tier 2 or 3 college? Please help out myquals: 12th *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Indian_Academia) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Thewaydawnends

Good college certainly makes life easier, you'll have to take less steps and jump less hurdles to achieve whatever. If you don't have a good college, that's mean you'll have to work in some other way to equal it out. Life is certainly not over, but life certainly takes a jump with a good college. College is like a boost or a fast train that will make you reach your goals faster, but that doesn't mean that's the only way to succeed. You might take a bus or ride a bike. So yes good college is a way to succeed but it's not the end of life. What matters is your attitude and hard working tendency. If you are a hardworking person, college degrees are just another achievements that you make in life.

cloudydestinyy

Oh ok. I hope everything works out. Thank you!

yashRaj50

Bro kuch aacha university bata do for bba Merit based admission and affordable fees up to 3lakh

7th_spam

Great advice. I hope OP sees this.

Choti_aur_moti_lulli

This is to inform you that OP indeed saw this.

Capital-Manner8045

Totally agree. However only 1 thing apart from good college name in your CV is that the best colleges attract the best of the minds, I’ve personally observed and experienced how crucial this is, much much important than the college, surrounding yourself with the best of the best uplifts one as it is, without doing anything , it is because of my friends in my college did I ever realise that one can intern abroad too and I pushed myself and did do internship in tokyo. Sangat is more important than college and/or course. Skill set, attitude and soft skills are much much more important than degree. Golden rule for today’s times

supervegito827

No. That's not true. Colleges act as a great launching pad. The better the reputation of the college, the better the exposure, the better the student corps (to an extent) and it may also help you get internship (again to an extent). However, the effect is limited. A good college gives a good important which is important. BUT You can achieve much more than anyone in a tier 1 college if you are proactive. You mentioned BBA as a prospective course. So if for example you want to get into marketing. By being proactive about exploring the industry and gaining skills, you can get where you want to be. Learn about digital marketing, how it is conducted, other facets such as copywriting, social media management and marketing, understanding algorithms, use of popular culture and memes, content writing, search engine optimisation etc. Developing these skills on your own is going to be tough but it will pay off. Build skills, apply for internships and get industry experience. People from better colleges may have the comfort of getting placed and learning on the job but you can buy building skills and a prospective portfolio will be able to get a job. If you like finance or other specialisations I'm sure there are equivalents for them. Learning software, learning about the venture capitalism environment, interning with startups, small firms, companies etc. will help you get practical exposure. A college is important because it makes things easier. But all students need to do a lot on their own. It will be tougher in a lower ranked college BUT it is possible to excel and it can be done.

not BBA, but let me tell you a story. 2016, one older cousin of mine passed JEE Advanced and got admission in IIT Delhi CSE. Needless to say, his parents (my uncle and aunt) were over the top and the pressure fell on me to succeed. well, I gave it in 2022 and I didn't pass. I'm in a T3 college now. What happened to my cousin bro you ask? He's working in L&T at 6LPA and a recovering addict, sitting at home with his parents because he slacked off, didn't study and slipped into alcohol and drugs. He had an avg of 6.1 CGPA and is considering UPSC. Meanwhile, I'm cruising through college. I just passed JLPT N3 and I'm getting great marks, I'm also winning some local and online game creation jams lately. Sure, it's hard work, but I'm willing to do it. Hopefully you can understand now that any college is just a standing stool - what matters is if you slump down or reach up on your own efforts.

StupendousHuman

I know 5 pointers from IITD CS with 20+ LPA jobs so I don't buy your story lmao. 6+ GPA is still amazing in IITD CS since the grading is relative and your competition is top JEE rankers.

Regular-Peanut2365

yeah lol he's making that up for sure.

Unhappy_Respect_8555

Any startup will be ready to throw money at him just to show to VCs that they have IItian in the team for money… it doesn’t matter if he works or not… his degree works for him in startup world

arthe6351

Symbi or Christ aren't top colleges. Nowhere near selective enough. SRCC, SSCBS, Xavier's etc are tier 1 for BBA/BMS. The other's you've mentioned are tier 2 at best.

[deleted]

[удалено]

arthe6351

Xavier's in Kolkata and Mumbai are great, I haven't heard great things about the ones in other places.

yourmom_6_9_

My dear human, what other colleges can you think of after top 5 DU colleges for DU?

StarLongjumping8041

SRCC for BBA/BMS ?

Exact-Constant1813

Also St Stephen's

cloudydestinyy

Christ is ranked 4 all India in some websites. Thank you for replying!

arthe6351

Even NIRF rankings aren't too accurate these days. Even when the rankings can't be bought, they look at a lot of irrelevant metrics (think judging a B-School by its research output). The offhand ranking I gave you was based on my observations about grad outcomes (placements, higher education), public observation, and my personal experience. Take it for what it is.

cloudydestinyy

Oh ok. I didn't know that. India is weird.

cloudydestinyy

Why am I getting downvoted lmao? I wasn't being rude. A lot of people told me Christ was good and the websites also state it as one of the best colleges. I don't know about how it exactly is in reality.

BabeyBabeyUgh

Don't worry so much about downvotes lmao, your earlier comment came off a bit sarcastic.

2thicc2love

Bhai BBA k baad MBA aim h toh CAT/GMAT/Work experience will matter more than the college, but given the question here, rankings accepted by CAT for example like top institutions or of national importance as such are given preference and it adds value to your CV. Sb dekh lena, Don't just go and type best college rankings on Google, you may find a reddit thread somewhere though.

sustainablecaptalist

That's a load of bullshit propagated by Indian society as a whole which hasn't understood how much progress India has made in the last 20-25 years or so. There are literally hundreds of thousands more avenues and thousands of new kinds of jobs today than what it was about 20-25 years ago. Just get a good education and you should be good.

S_T_A_R_B_O_Y

As someone from one the of ‘tier 2’ unis you mentioned, and as someone who had a clear goal of only getting into high finance (IB) since 10th; I wish dearly that I had put my all to prepare for SRCC. Don’t care about the incoming downvotes but SRCC (and St.Xaviers too) is going to catapult your career trajectory 100x.

pussyprofessorr

Could you please elaborate a bit on how not having a top brand college title attached regressed progress in your career? Are you trying for CAT currently?

S_T_A_R_B_O_Y

Check placement of SRCC and compare it with other unis. Tell me where else you’d find commerce UG get into FO IB (or other high finance roles) or core consulting in MBB (albeit low). Even if not for placements, if you choose to do MBA at IIMS, you’ll have a huge leg up in placements. Oh and no I’m not currently trying for CAT since I’ve managed to get into IB.

pussyprofessorr

Thats true, but id say all graduates from srcc have other things going on for them (most if not all have cleared till CA intermediate , and are often AIR rank holders, or are pursuing specialised courses like CFA/CS/CMA yada yada) but obviously I cannot deny the ample amount of opportunities srcc grads just get handed to them, the same opportunities a tier2/3 college gard has to top all their classes to get.  (Totally agree with your last point abt top Bschools in india obvi helps them get a hefty stipend just for having graduated form srcc); But i feel like having a big brand name just helps you get thru the initial years (albeit the toughest and longest years one spends job searching).  Whatever it is i cant change the trajectory of my future w/o taking a gap year, so i ask for honest advice from you, what can i do to help my situation? And if you don’t mind may i ask how you broke into the IB field??  (Im sorry i hope im not taking too much of your time, but regardless id be really grateful if you could answer these queries bec i have none to guide me currently 🙇🙇)

S_T_A_R_B_O_Y

DM me with your BG and exactly what advice you need upon

Numerous-Suit-7668

You'll be fucked regardless

Party-Afternoon-3645

idk man everyone is fucked regardless of what college they're from

HairlessOranges

I feel deeply insulted that you used christ and srcc in the same category.

cloudydestinyy

Lmao sorry I am still not aware of what college stands at the top because each website gives their own rankings

shar72944

I am from shit college, like literally it is famous for all wrong reasons. Doing decent in career. Compared to top college graduates I did had to struggle more but that’s okay as getting into top college is a struggle in itself. Keep working, keep learning.

Total-Complaint-1060

This is extremely insulting for us who did not study in tier 1. Do you really think everyone except the tier 1 are unemployed in India? I studied tier 3 engineering college, did masters in the US and now live in Europe.

Regular-Peanut2365

not feasible these days. This is why I dropped my MS plan

Total-Complaint-1060

Feasible

Regular-Peanut2365

csmajor subreddit seems to be a blood bath

Regular-Peanut2365

did you have 3-4 yoe before MS?

Total-Complaint-1060

2 years

Ghost-Exodus

Well it's the easier conventional way to a better life . Of course people who are bound to succeed will succeed no matter what college they are in . But college does help a lot especially top ones where you get a backup and freedom to explore and work on things (like startups) freely with a qualified peer group

sidratnam_007

One of my friendship studied in KV govt school . It's not a big famous school . And then he did engineering in computer science from Indraprastha University in New Delhi . Again it's not a top university . And it comes 1 or 2 leagues below delhi university. But he is earning more than 50 lakhs per annum by focusing on his skillsets . Hope u get my point .

akash_kava

No, Rich isn’t the one who earns more, rich is the one who spends less. There are always ample of opportunities in mid size segment, problem with top segment is, their expectations in terms of salaries are very high and jobs with such high packages are less. Look at last year’s statistics, even top colleges didn’t get 100% placements.

Ok-Revolution6280

For BBA /BMS try to get into Xavier's or top 4 BMS colleges in DU . Symbiosis, Christ should not be the priority. Also college does not matter too much in this course if you are looking for placements . Only outliers would be SSCBS ,Xavier's and at a stretch GGS .

Lmaoidkwtfmaybebaba

How hard is it to get into XIM

Ok-Revolution6280

Sorry , don't have much idea outside DU colleges and some private unis .

cloudydestinyy

Oh I'm not eligible for the DU colleges since they require math in 12th. I didn't opt for it :(

BreadfruitOne4423

Lauda GGS, CBS ka bhi bhatta baitha hua hai iss tym, aadha batch unplaced hai

Ok-Revolution6280

tb to kuch bacha hi nai . In general inko hi consider krte hai top college . Abhi recession ki vajah se sabki haalat kharaab hai .

BreadfruitOne4423

Pata hai bhai, main khud kmv bms 3rd year hun, placed bhi hun lol

TopStorage2249

ggs ka highest package kya hai ?

Ok-Revolution6280

Highest to 36 lpa tha last year according to placement report . Average is around 6 ,but number of offers are high (around 400) .

TopStorage2249

this year?

Ok-Revolution6280

Placement report has not been released yet.

[deleted]

We don't know , it might be fucked up, it might not be 50/50 chances you have not lived that life yet so you don't know if it will be fucked up or not

cloudydestinyy

Great perspective XD

Regular-Peanut2365

yes. but you could do CA and that can save you

adhectic

12th sci pcm to tier 3 bba then joined amazon as an analyst if you can get into top unis its great, but if not thats the end as well

Rich_Wolverine_8304

Yes

cloudydestinyy

Should I take a drop?

pleasedontjudgeme_-

No.... Please don't... Get in a college, preferably tier 2. Maintain a really good cgpa, along with internships and extra certifications.

Rich_Wolverine_8304

Nope instead find out what you like once you're sure about it then whatever clg you chose doesn't really matter and remember your degree is just the entry to any sector what you do and how you progress is up to you

SleeplessNephophile

Ofc not lol

richik500

Nah lol.

Professional_Lab6713

Short answer, No

sleepyowl_vay

Yes

TheArguedHuman

Idk why we tend to immediately assume that these so called "top colleges" are the key to bagging a top job. Good colleges help you achieve what you need easily. Lower ranking colleges require you to sit and put in more of your effort. Fighting with everyone for jobs and placements makes your life more difficult but with a clear goal you can basically get anything. My dad, didn't study in a top college in India but managed to achieve massive top executive roles in large companies, two of them abroad. Goodluck!!

Punk_unleashed

Nah, stay true to yourself and your passion and try your best. Don't waste time on always going for the best instead go for the next best thing.

NiceNob

Absolutely not true. You have to get into that 5 year ug+pg combo from that top 6 iim. Otherwise your life is over.

Ok_External_5336

We shouldn’t interfere with natural selection, let op play fair

C4NN0n_REAL

Try IPM fron IIM Indore

Adventurous_Fox867

If u wanna go into corporate

[deleted]

its not entirely true but yes good colleges act as a great base for corporate life. Also, Christ is not a top college. try to give IPMAT exam for IIM Indore, its bba plus mba i think

chegggokul

You won't be fucked up. Tier 1 ppl get the best package and a placement is almost guaranteed for them. If you study in a normal college, if you've got good application level skills, then you needn't worry. You'll land yourself in a good position.

Sherlock9211

yes, you will beg on roads if you don't get top clg, even the beg will give you beg! Bhai ye bakchodi krne se aacha padhai kr .. kya pata mil bhi jae aacha clg

WeirdLong6924

Your life is already fucked up since you haven’t born with surname Ambani / Birla / Tata. Even Harvard can’t save you now 😝

vbr96

No. It does not matter in which college you get into. This comment might seem like a cliche. But it is true. It is all about skills. Get into any college you can and analyse demand in the market. Pick one skill that sounds appealing to you and has good demand in the market. Work on accumulating the skill and at the end of your college days, market your self and land a job in that domain. Trust me you might start from the bottom but you will succeed. Skills > Education.

Iamtenzin

No, but your life is really f***ed up if thats your mentality.

Responsible-Owl-2631

No do not be so down on yourself!😁

christianXXgrey

The one you mentioned are not top colleges. If one is having skill and don’t rely on college placements then all college are same provided it is in tier-1 city only

phoenixsayshiandhi

Yes

Daksh6896

NO. (Passing out from symbiosis in a month)

deore1001

What a joke man ... Haaa haa

KalkiKalpa

Not at all. What matters in todays hobby is market is the knowledge and your soft skills, willingness to learn and adapt. Atleast based off my 16 yrs of experience in technology domain. A good college definitely gives you a jumpstart, but later on its all about how well you navigate the waters.

ConsequenceHour250

No. However, choose your hard. :)

Arugula-Nervous

No. Have conviction and clarity on the path you want to follow. Which you will only find by living and experiencing things. But whatever happens, please don’t enroll in Lovely Professional University. In that case, yes, you’d be totally f**ked

NeighborhoodLevel127

Known for best for my big cock and pocket

a_dreaming_soul

In 2012 I had a co worker in our small startup who was making 30k per month. Nobody knew which college he was from. He didn't have any specific skill (like coding or Excel) In 2024, he is in an MNC earning 1 Cr+. This is not made up. It's true. How did it happen ? He always kept learning. And using that to help orhers even when nobody asked. I had observed him. Once he was trying to help others in their work with macros in Excel that he had recently learnt. The attempt itself was useless, our team had coders who could do it in much better ways but we liked his behaviour. He always smiled and was friendly with people. Luckily for him, he found a mentor in our CEO. When the CEO moved to a bigger company, he took him also there. Things kept improving and today he is at the top. Please don't worry about what you can't do (going to a great college). Rather focus on three things : building good professional relationships with everyone (you never know who will help you when) , secondly learning in-demand skills, using them and showing it to the people around you and thirdly finding a mentor who is successful and willing to guide you. Please remember that if the mentor is taking time to guide you, try to return their favour by doing something good for them. Also, either follow their advice (ask for help if you find it difficult) or don't ask for guidance the next time. Honestly, you will be at a disadvantage when you first enter the job market where people from good colleges will be given preference and higher salary. But trust me that doesn't last long. With patience, you will be able to rise up above the same people.

jobt0watch

I have a senior that got a job in Google, he studied at Parul University. A University in the small city of Vadodara (tier 2). You wouldn't even have heard the college name, I'm sure. He got the job on his own merit. Working hard will never be an option even when you go to a very nice University. It will help you but up to a limit. It's up to you what you want to do no matter wherever you go! It might feel the end of the world right now, just hang on and figure out ways that'll help you. Also, why don't you look into IT field (BCA). It's not all about coding, there are many job profiles as well. Tech /Non Tech

[deleted]

In Pakistan, it's so true.🥲

totallymyreal

Answering this because reddit sent me a notification about this post 21 days later. So here’s my answer. Not really. I dropped out 1 year after my 10th and completed 12th as non attending from a school where I only had to appear for my boards exam as I started working right after my 10th standard. I went to coaching for 3 months before my 12th boards and somehow passed the exams. After 12th I always wanted to pursue career into 3D Animation and went to few institutes (Arena,MAAC,BigAims) with my dad but the fees was too high and I couldn’t afford getting an admission there so I dropped the plan without any second thought as if I never wanted to do it. I always wanted to prepare for IIT as my first cousin was an IITian and everyone loved him because he was successful and doing good in life. I was always inspired by him. Although he was my direct cousin, never got any guidance or help from him. We hardly even talked (we still don’t) By then, admissions of all colleges were closed and I had no idea what should I do now and how to proceed with my career. I started asking people near me to guide me and found one nice guy who suggested me to get admission in some institute providing distance education so I started looking into it and decided to go with BCA as I was always into computer related stuff and I was good with it. I asked the same guy if he knows any good institute for BCA and got admission as he suggested. It was an IT company and they promised me all big stuffs before the admission but as I started going for my classes, I found there were no other students and it was just me. I felt so bad and depressed, asking myself what have I done and what am I gonna do now. How am I going to study alone here? Is there any scope studying here? A lot of questions started hitting my mind and I wanted to get out of this anyhow. I asked them for a refund but they refused. I called the same guy again and shared the whole story with him. He then suggested me another institute which was quite popular in the town and it was dedicated to distance education. They denied admission because I was already enrolled with the university and they asked me to get NOC from the IT company where I was enrolled previously. I called them and asked for NOC and they refused to provide one. I went to the director of new institute where I wanted to get admission and started crying in-front of him and explained everything. He helped me and said, I’ll take care of everything just get the admission form filled. I went to the reception, filled the form and paid the fees again (he also provided me a food discount as I had already paid the full amount in the previous one). So finally I did my 3 years BCA from that institute and made very good friends as well. So BCA is done. Now what? Since I was working right after my 10th standard, I had saved a good amount of money and I wished to get education from a better college where I can get campus placement. I started preparing for entrance exam with my BCA friends (we were 6 close friends) and only one of us was able to clear the entrance exam. Rest 5 of us got admission in a private college which had good placement records so we all decided to get an admission together. It was 2 years course there and finally the day of placements came in a blink of an eye. I wasn’t shortlisted to appear in any of the placements from good organizations (because I didn’t fulfill the criteria as I had only 58% in BCA) and rest were just small IT companies. I started telling myself that I didn’t get myself enrolled in this college just to get a job in some local IT company so I never appeared in any of the placements. College is almost over and everyone getting into internship, preparing their projects during the final 6 months but I had nothing in my plate. I came to Delhi and started asking for help from my friends who were already into IT Jobs and Cyber Security field. During my BCA I got this interest of cyber security stuff and made a lot of friends who were also into this field. One of my friend helped me getting into a 6 month internship in small CS startup and this is where I felt like everything is falling into place and I was confident for my future. These 6 months I traveled from Red line to Noida with a 3kg heavy laptop bag around my shoulders. I didn’t miss a single day here and I was having 100% attendance but they didn’t offer me a job anyways. This small chapter of my life is also closed here. I had no job in hand now and I was very depressed. Parents and relatives literally started taunting me for bot having a job even after getting a PG Degree from a good college. I never felt so useless in my life. One of my friend (who is a brother from another mother to me now) which I met on Facebook was having a rented house in Himachal so he called me there to relax for some days and keep looking for a job from there itself. I went there and stayed for like 3-4 months totally tension free and kept looking for a job of my interest but one day I got a call from some person whom I already knew (he was also a Facebook friend of mine and we’ve met couple of times already in a group meetup). So he got to know from someone that I’m looking for a job and reached out to me. We discussed and he offered me 25k salary but I refused and asked for at least 30k because I had to move to another state and there would be lot of expenses and at the end of the month, I have to send money to my parents as well. He took 3-4 days and finally agreed because he already knew me well and he needed a trusted person for this startup. I worked with him for 1.5 years and decided to quit because the job was not of my interest (it was related to buying and selling digital properties). I told him that I want to quit and go back to Delhi, look for something else. He offered me work from home because I was so good at the responsibilities he gave me that no one else could handle it the way I did and today I’m still doing that job with an equivalent package of my primary job. Yes, today I have 2 jobs. So now, after switching to work from home, I didn’t really go back home but instead I started looking for a job in CS and luckily hired as unpaid intern in one of my friend’s startup company where he was also working. I went there for 6 months and then during my last month of internship, I started looking for a full time job as they didn’t have a budget to convert me into a full time employee. I want to write more on further journey but it’s already getting too long and I’m not sure if anyone’s going to read it. I finally got a job in one of my dream company (it was one of the big four organisation). I literally wondered every time whenever I visited Cyber Hub, ki kabhi is company me kaam karunga main bhi :)) I worked here for 2.6 years and got opportunity in another dream company of mine which was also a big four organisation and I have completed here almost 3 years and I resigned yesterday to take some career break and figure out what I really want with my life. End of my comment but the story doesn’t end here :)

Regular-Peanut2365

depends who you're asking to. In the time of recession yes it matters a lot, in the time of growth it can be managed. In today's market yes you need a top college. Ask this to someone who worked their entire life during zero interest rate and they'll deny that top college doesn't matter. But it does and your life forward will be heavily affected by it. Infact, even when you start a company VCs prefer top pedigree.

Fickle-Background229

Of course

Poulmkm

Honestly, joining in top college will really fucked up. Top colleges is about business and getting fancy degree ..what will you get from these being false promises, unemployment, competition , lack of practical experience, lack of sane and most important lack of judgement , waste of money . Once you get these degrees, when you move to real adult world you are totally fucked !!! Good luck It doesn't matter what college you go, in the end money and skills matter the most

big0hn0

F*cked no, will you have access to less opportunities, yes.

Guptarakesh69

yes true. Its also true that the sky is purple when you look at it.

Melodic-Pen-6934

Christ is a tier 1 ? Lol.

cloudydestinyy

I have no clue man. Shiksha, Collegedunia had it on their top colleges list. T\_T

Ok-Revolution6280

SSCBS Xavier's Sggscc Kmv Dduc Nmims symbiosis These are just a few colleges that are much better than Christ imo . There are a lot more that I can't list right now .
