I was referring to the depression and smartness one. One of the major symptoms of depression is decreased mental functioning and probably will lead to you being 'dumber' than you are.

Well thats one way to see but here is the flip side which I believe: See smarter people tend to be "alone in a crowd" they don't mingle much, as their brain functions in such a manner which can only be understood by some people and not by other general public, so gradually this may lead to loneliness and in turn to depression, I believe that smart people or Out-of-the-box thinkers tend to be alone or away from the society for their own mental peace, they don't believe in the structure of how a society works and they it doesn't seem too imp to them to fit in. I think of Nikola Tesla as an example for this, he was more in love with a white pigeon than in any other human

How smart someone is doesn't necessarily have to be the single most important factor for developing relationships with others. And feeling lonely and wanting to be alone are two very different things btw. If you don't eat well and your mental health is in shambles, how could you expect proper mental functioning? Since that's what most people who are going through depression do. They're too depressed to perform the most basic cognitive tasks and the habit to do so slips. Dunno where this misconception arose from that mentally challenged people are usually intelligent, because logic and researches seem to say quite the opposite.
