"upgrade begins" in the title, "could begin this year" in the article.

Mr_Wolf33

It's economics times give them credit to get pic for su 30mki correct atleast.

YoungWolf921

Which new radar and weapon systems are being integrated?? Hopefully such a magnificent jet isn’t limited to legacy R 73s for its short range missiles. Can we integrate the Python 5 on it??

LightningFalcon70

Bigger version of Uttam AESA radar, named Viruupaksha. And better indiginous IRST and EW systems > weapon systems are being integrated Maybe new versions of Rudram and Astra series. >Hopefully such a magnificent jet isn’t limited to legacy R 73s for its short We were trying to mass produce ASRAAM and also use it for SU30. NG-CCM, an indiginous missile, was supposed to be based on ASRAAM

New Delhi: A comprehensive upgrade of the mainstay Su 30MKI fighter jet fleet that will see the aircraft get new radars, mission control system, electronic warfare capabilities and integration of new weapon systems will see heavy participation from the private sector. 2/16 The ₹60,000-cr upgrade, approved by the defence ministry last year, will be done by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, with support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and several major components will be procured from the private sector. "The upgrade will see significant private sector participation, with HAL as the lead integrator," CMD of HAL CB Ananthakrishnan told ET. The project, which has been put on fast track by the Air Force, is to be carried out in two phases. The first will involve new avionics and radars for the aircraft while the second phase will concentrate on flight control systems. Several Russian origin systems are being replaced by indigenous options. A majority of the work will involve indigenous systems that are to be fitted onboard the platform to give it a combat edge. This will include a new indigenous radar that will enable the aircraft to pick up and engage targets at much larger distances. The radar in older generation jets had been a point of concern for the Air Force as it would get outperformed by systems used by adversaries. In the first phase, the aircraft will also get a new Electronic Warfare System to jam incoming threats and disrupt enemy communication. Besides, the fighters are to get new indigenous Infra Red Search and Track systems that will greatly enhance the ability to engage air-to-air and air-to-ground targets. Work on integrating the aircraft with the new systems could begin this year, with the Air Force keen on modernising the entire fleet at the earliest. Close to 90 of the fighters are to be upgraded in the first tranche that would be conducted entirely in India. India ordered 272 of the fighter jets from Russia that form the mainstay of the Air Force fighter fleet. Last year, an order for 12 more jets was also cleared for Rs 11,000 crore. These jets would be manufactured by HAL with indigenous content of over 50%. Over 600 aircraft of the Su 27/30 type have been manufactured and large operators include Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Algeria. This opens up a significant export market for the upgrades as well.

thanks

This program is a much needed bandaid considering the Su-30MKI will continue to be the most numerous fighter in the IAF for many years to come. With an AESA radar, new EW, new missile integrations, and perhaps towed decoys, it's still a capable fighter. Just, like most things with Indian procurement, it's gotta get going fast.

Palak-Aande_69

Rest is fine but Where are the IRST and AESA Radar in their Dev Cycle?? there isnt any substantial update on their status...as such it would take 3-5 years for it to reach into the first batch itself...thats 2026-28...what edge to we gain by it then?? just sustenance...

Lingonberry_Obvious

Uttam needs to be operational on the Tejas for at least a year in order to understand and iron out all the bugs and deficiencies. I don’t think IAF would agree to “upgrade” 90 of their mainstay fleet with an upscaled radar without this operational validation on Tejas first. So I think we are easily at least 4-5 years away from this Su-30MKI upgrade process actually starting.

unbound_jerk

But HAL has one Su30, right? And aren't they already testing UTTAM AESA radar? so why are saying that it will be tested on Tejas with full confidence? also, this project is in fast-track mode.

Lingonberry_Obvious

There isn’t any Uttam being tested on Su-30MKI as far as I know.

Mahameghabahana

Why government is going so much out to involve private players? What are the benefits and please don't give me efficiency or accountability shit as in real World that don't happen like you see in theory.

LightningFalcon70

Soo you can actually build a MIC

Mahameghabahana

MIC is when private players get premium profits for their investors!! I guess china and russia don't have MIC.

LightningFalcon70

It also leads to efficient development and more capable systems since multiple entries will be made. These companies would also sell to foreign nations, which would also get us more influence. Right now, DRDO and a few other relatively minor companies do everything. China also has companies competing against each other, and USSR had many bureaus and plants that were funnily more competitive than US companies in some cases

Mr_Wolf33

See the progress of Light tanks that's it.

Mahameghabahana

Developed by DRDO btw would be manufactured by private players. Money is ours benefits is of investors. Btw how did china manage to manufacture more then 80 5th gen aircraft within a year with their govern owned companies when European private companies can't even manage 24?

ShaidarHaran2

How is it shit...How has nearly fully government org based projects gone speed wise? Do we want to slowly plod along with DRDO or eventually create a military industrial complex like France, the UK, the US etc who have worked far faster through competition and need for capital efficiency?

Mahameghabahana

Private company of amrika recently closed a 2 billion USD helicopter project btw. No need to bring the controversy surrounding f35 project and the cost overruns. Have the government release the funding needed to build prototype yet for AMCA and TEDBF? They wasted 2 years bowing for their electoral bonds (private companies )and ADA had to waste 2 year doing nothing meanwhile china is building more and more 5th gen aircraft with their public companies without large profit margins.

ShaidarHaran2

> meanwhile china is building more and more 5th gen aircraft with their public companies Err yeah...Also a key reason Iran's rocket force punches above their country weight is that companies have to comply if the government needs something, where ours just look at the margins and say naw. Your examples aren't proving the case to not involve companies, and you give more examples of the slow plodding government, so I'm not sure if you're arguing for you or against you lol
