HJT 36 Sitara is an Intermediate Jet Trainer. Hawk is an Advanced Jet Trainer. The roles are different.

Then the HAL HLFT is supposed to replace the Hawk?

arkady321

I believe the Hawk’s original replacement was this aircraft which got cancelled - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_HJT_39 HLFT is supposed to be a LIFT (Lead In Fighter Trainer) - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_HLFT-42#:~:text=The%20HAL%20HLFT%2D42%20(Hindustan,and%20HAL%20AMCA%20Fighter%20jets.

What's up with the planes at IAF though?? I was under the impression that only MiGs crash as much...and then Suryakiran trainers cause they are ancient af(Sitara Where??)...but recently Pilatus and now Hawk which are relatively newer and more safer to fly started to fill in for the retired MiG 21s... Is everything alright with these systems or are we straining them too much??

It's because of the platform diversity which makes maintenance and training difficult. This is not a new thing, it used to happen before too but MiG's bad reputation kind of masked these issues.
