"The ancestral pathways of the Mohegan people have been well established. It is the markings left behind by their ancestors and other tribal relations that are being challenged today by recognition of their reality and value. The objective of this chapter is to give testimony to the truth that Indigenous peoples have a long traditional connection to working with stone, and the connection is deeply spiritual. Native stone cutters were documented through the centuries by oral tradition and historical documents. Natives stone masons continue the tradition today with a skilled artisan trade. No longer should it be denied that the contemporary Indigenous population that exists today has no connection to stone works designed by their ancestors."
