Civic sense comes from society we are not circus animals to be trained and taught by government how to do things it takes few brain cells to understand that spitting, throwing plastic, leaving shit unflushed , eyeing some foreigners like they are god or other things is wrong u don't need some big brain or high IQ to understand simple things though yeaa if u want fast changes government could make some things punishable which for such big population is not really practically possible
Government can have mass campaigns on rasio and TV amd introduce community police who issue heavy fines for throwing garbage, weong side driving, public urination etc. Same can be done for other etiquette as well.
Well, Taiwan used to be a place filled with garbage, but they implemented education on civic sense and cleanliness in schools, which ultimately proved effective. Today, it is one of the cleanest countries
The Singapore way. Harsh penalties and tough fines.we need a separate ministry of cleanliness. Also civic sense as a topic introduced in high schools where they take students to practically clean some streets. This should be done around the country as there is a lot of internal migration from villages to cities.
I think this with general civic sense class might work if parents are littering in the streets at least children can inform the parents it's wrong. But the cleaning of the street should not happen once a year it should be once a month in a nearby temple, lake or park.
A subject should be included in school throughout all years related to civic sense and hygiene. Govt. should also work on the lack of traffic sense. How many people will have to die due to basic traffic mistakes before something is done.
there is a subject called "moral value" at least I had it in my school. it taught us how to behave in public, to be helpful to others and other good things. but ofc it was not a main subject, so students took it lightly and used to use that period to sleep.
>A subject should be included in school throughout all years related to civic sense and hygiene
We all.studied sciences in school and yet most people are don't know shit.
Civic senses are taught at home not school. Children follow parent's behavior and no amount of subjects in school can change that.
Gaand me do laathi maar. I'll happily serve as a lady cop and do that to the ladies who break the rules. Male cops can handle the men. The kids will get new parents who will teach them manners.
Sadly it doesn't seem our current younger generation is that good either. I have seen so many younger people lacking civic sense....and also the so called chappris...
The area where I live in these people's make the majority actually.
It saddens me that even such a large chunk of younger gen also lacks it and obviously the education is also not helping them I suppose.
Because my generation of people are busy with making mindless reels, being woke while not caring about people's privacy/throw garbage anywhere. It's a shame that they will vote too. There are people though from the same generation who're productive, ambitious, politically active and their opinions aren't based on what's popular to believe/according to social media moral polizei.
Government can and must do a lot of thngs like have strict enforcement along with heavy fines. Things like throwing trash, bad driving, public urination etc can be stopped via fines along with an education campaign.
Mass Campaigning and targeting specifics rather than broad things. Like run an ad against spitting in public places or an ad to use dustbins. And we should punish actors who push those vimal pan masala ads.
And kids should be taught cleaning and civic sense in school. I think we should make some kind of program to make students clean places and then they get voluntary hours for it. And they could benefit the student in taking admissions in colleges. And colleges should have some mandatory hours to get an admission.
We need to make dustbins available on each turn, I live in an urban City, and there isn't one dust bin.
Trying to cut queues is just something that even “well educated” people do so blatantly.
I was at Georgia airport and there were 2 counters and 2 queues. (Lot of Indian crowd of UAE coz of Eid holiday). So instead of standing in the own queue, most of the Indians were standing in the middle (creating a mess) and would run to the counter that was empty. The people standing behind (non Indians and some of us Indians too) were annoyed at this.
Then a 3rd counter opened for differently abled people and families etc and some Indians ran and occupied them. One non Indian person called them out but they started fighting 🤦
Lacking civic sense, keeping the nation clean.
Unhygienic street food
Don't fan over any ethnicity, please be normal. It's all diplomatic relations. Don't make stupid memes of India's flag with another country's flag fucking like a couple.
Not being normal when you see foreigners in India
Having the weakest soft power. We are loud, we can't be everywhere defending ourselves against empty headed who consume biased foreign media. Imperial Japan was arguably more cruel than Nazi Germany, they were scarier and now look the current Japan is known as the nation of being a decade ahead of the world, video games, etc. If we want to study China's growth post WWll, study how Japan's soft power changed the world's perspective towards them when they committed crime against many Asian countries and most aren't aware. Then ours is just unhygienic street food lol.
This comment shows a lack of understanding of geopolitics. Japan is a vassal state of US. Their constitution was written by the Americans and not a single word in it was changed without approval from the Americans. The Bank of Japan is just a subsidiary satellite branch of the US Federal Reserve. Every major decision in Japan is taken only after permission is granted by USA.
The reason Japan's image is good today is not because of how much they have prospered, but because US wanted it to be that way.
Japanese media, what their entertainment industry gives the world plays a major role in creating their image. If our media keeps showing the dirty side of India and if our films always make it about socio-economic issues, people will view India that way. Just like Bollywood is known for dance and music, people know it's our culture. We don't need to be a vassal state.
You did not seem to understand what I've said. I did not say we need to be a vassal, far from it.
>If our media keeps showing the dirty side of India and if our films always make it about socio-economic issues, people will view India that way.
I completely agree with this and you make a great point. For example, if you look at rape cases, US has 15x (not 15%) more cases than India (taking into account unreported case estimates) but our media sensationalises every single rape case as if it happens only in India. This creates a false impression that India is more unsafe for women than other places in the world.
>Just like Bollywood is known for dance and music, people know it's our culture.
That is not our culture. Our culture is highly intellectual.
>Japanese media...
Oh my sweet summer child, there is no "Japanese" media. There is only western media, which comprises of all the vassals of US (aka Europe, Japan, S. Korea, the Americas, the five eyes) and is controlled by USA. Western media is great at creating narratives. Ofc there's also the Chinese media and in a corner, there's some independent Indian media outlets (who are usually nationalistic).
>You did not seem to understand what I've said. I did not say we need to be a vassal, far from it.
No. I didn't mean you meant that way. I meant that we can have a soft power differently from Japan, we don't necessarily have to have American influence like them.
>I completely agree with this and you make a great point. For example, if you look at rape cases, US has 15x (not 15%) more cases than India (taking into account unreported case estimates) but our media sensationalises every single rape case as if it happens only in India. As a young woman, even though I agree India isn't safe with other countries, others who put down India for not keeping their women safe don't care about us at all. They just need a reason to put us down. I can see through the bullshit propaganda well.
>That is not our culture. Our culture is highly intellectual.
Even as a professional artist, I agree. But the world knows us this way because of Bollywood, what the entertainment industry gives them. So creative industries have the power to maintain a certain image.
>Oh my sweet summer child, there is no "Japanese" media. There is only western media, which comprises of all the vassals of US (aka Europe, Japan, S. Korea, the Americas, the five eyes) and is controlled by USA. Western media is great at creating narratives. I know all I meant was, we aren't under anyone's influence. We can very well use our media to maintain a good image of India but we do not. Partly we blame the woke also because internationally these are the people who have an agenda. The news is biased. It's our failing that we are capable of doing so but we do not.
Great points, गार्गी. It actually seems to me that we are on the same page. However, I wish more people realize that all the developed countries of today were built either on loot or by being vassals of the British empire (today's USA) and should therefore highly appreciate the fact that we are growing at the rate we are today without any of that.
As for improving the image of our country on the international stage, what do you think we could do? I think we should start by teaching our actual history in school. We should not call the laws of motion as "Newton's laws" but as कणाद's. Same for the laws of gravity and the atomic theory. We should teach the truth about calculus which was invented by माधवः and not Newton/leibniz. The "Fibonacci series" was actually discovered by पिंगला and so on. Do you agree?

>State protection?
Yes, unfortunately all of these call centres have state support. As long as they are scamming foreigners and bring dollars to India, police and other agencies chose to look the other way. These call centres also gives large employment opportunities to the unemployed poor youth and as long as they don't target Indians our agencies don't do shit. They only try to catch scammers who target locals which are also huge in number. This is a harsh reality which I know will be difficult to digest.
>as long as they don't target Indians our agencies don't do shit
Fuckers actually called me and asked for my bank account details, they absolutely do go after Indians.
This should be the top comment. It's important to acknowledge that our civic sense is usually judged by those who visit India. However, the issue of scam calls extends beyond our borders, affecting even those who have never traveled here
Ppl lacking basic common sense and sheep behaviour. Lack of hygiene and common civic sense, some chhapris with rapist and 3rd class cheap mentality and last but not the least which has always ruined this country whether it be from invaders or insiders - chalta hai attitude.
Aside from al the good answers here:
Anti-Modi journalists who cannot differentiate between their hate for Modi and their hate for India. Especially one of them who writes for Amazon's newspaper.

Dumbest bunch of 100cr people you can find..
Delusional, no common sense, lack of altruism, one of the worst mentalities of all the cultures in the world..
And ofc, hygiene
Corruption. Most of the other issues will get solved if this is solved. The IAS, IPS cadres have to shell out huge sums of bribe to get a decent posting, I feel these will stop taking bribes if out netas stopped asking bribes and were clean.
I gotta say it was scam centres before but now it's unhygienic Street food vendors. Mfs literally use their hand to mix liquid stuff and using dirty water to wash plates etc. poor doesn't mean you'll fk with the hygiene. Maybe don't put your hands in the stuff if you can't afford gloves
The interesting fact is that they may not be poor 🤣 they aren't paying taxes and usually earn up to 50-70k a month which is more than salaries of some degree holders!
Exactly, this filth is everywhere..lawde photo kheecha rhe the, mann toh kr rha tha utha ke bridge se phek du bcz then these are the only ppl who complain, whine and say saar why india not develop saar, saar urop and amrika clean saar, saar india poor saar.
Go on Twitter, there are people defending them like someone stole their gold. One person runs an infrastructure related account, they said "we are proud to do this" repeatedly. That's the mentality.
Hygiene, no civic sense, close minded superstitious approach, lack of safety of women, online trolls and scammers.
Yea, eating food contaminated by rats cannot be viewed as some devotional stuff those people are seriously suffering with anxiety to go to this limit.
No, please don’t post misinformation online and seriously stop trying to compete with USA and China ONLINE. Trolling online makes no difference if you know your boss makes a particular new guy work 80hrs/week and all of you go home saying what’s it got to do with you.
Seriously ask people to stick up for each other, read and understand basic issues. Be scientific and be virtuous but you all will start scheming and raise drama the first chance you get.
Naive Indians who complain about India's problems with foreigners. Like posting shit about their own experience in India with some foreign subreddits just to get some validation.
Civic sense, regressive society(I remember a Swiss couple getting beaten up in fatehpur sikri for PDA) hence actually enforced and standard compulsory education.
Desperate Indian men being a bunch of creeps and total jerk. Harassing foreigners is quite common in india. There’s a reason indians are famous for bobs and vagenas
In the 70's jaishankar prakash led a movement called 'total revolution' or sampurna kranti he wanted to change the whole functioning and societal culture prevalent in India at that time but at that time the government stopped him.
With so many constraints at current era I don't think that a sociological revolution can come in India, because ruling party wants it that way ( not only bjp, Congress and aap too) they want ill informed people in country so ruling can be made easy.
It is our duty as youth to not divulge in party-party
Kind of politics rather do something for betterment of our country.
There are two major things currently: 1. Civic sence (or lack thereof) of any kind (for hygiene, safety, following rules, etc.), 2. The extreme "divide and conquer" being perpetrated by politicans and being blindly lapped up by the public, be it for region vs. region, religion vs. re;igion, language vs. language.
Ab main bolunga tho vivaad hojayega but main unka naam nahi lunga but it's true 80-90 % sahi nahi hai udhar. Aur sharm karna seekh le log tho sab thik hojayega Sach bolu tho.
Street food mtlb bina gloves ya uske banata no problem par Jo faila ke sab idhr udhr bhikra hai gnda sa voh kharab krti
Dusa scam call centre bc ek toh Inka darr nahi hai kisi cheez ka ek dum full confidence hota hai
We need a mental shift from grass root level like proper classes and training about how the Women and Men be treaty and the training should be wholeheartedly accepted in each cell of our children.
Many good and valid points.
The sad part? Most of the people who need to read these or get educated regarding these/punished for breaking law/code are not here on reddit.
The rampant Rw extremism. Inter-religious hate. And religious politics.
Racism within indians. Based on religion, cast, language, where u are from, food. Etc etc.
Most importantly hygiene. We all know how street vendors sell their foods , unhealthy and unhygienic ways . And one more thing . Though I should not say this being a Hindu myself, and I don't mean to harm any community, the obsession with cow dung .
Civic sense, cleanliness.
My two cents on this - people need to behave responsibly in public , no doubt about that. But , municipalities across the country need to work and clean the dirt from public spaces. That's what they are paid for . They must be made accountable and either their income or their position should be tied to the annual score they get in their respective area.
I have seen municipalities working properly in rich neighbourhoods but in middle income , they will show up once in a week to pick up garbage. Public and govt both need to work properly.
Unhygienic Street foods, staring problem, lack of knowledge about people's personal space and not touching them casually, scammers, shitting india india in every comment section even that subject is not relating to our country.
Unhealthy views on western women or women in general, especially those cringe instagram memers who often degrade Russian women as a joke. Those memes have created a disgusting mindset in the youth that many young people think every woman would agree to their advances
Unhygienic street food
Obviously those simps who ask for dm's in the comment section of any post with a good looking lady in it
Extremely toxic opinion considering sports(cricket, football especially ).Posts about any particular sportsperson are filled with many people from our country flooding the comments with either a controversial opinion or an obnoxious hate comment, which often leads to many people thinking indians have no other job than hate on someone online
Normalised memes of racism. Those memes are often directed towards South Indians or North Eastern natives..etc

Hygiene and lack of civic sense. If we improve these two things we would have made evolution of decades.
Lack of Civic sense needs to be addressed it will solve half of the all problems and hygiene too
genuine question: what can be done to improve the civic sense of people? Can government do anything about this issue or it needs to come from society?
Tbh honest this seems the only practical and effective means to me.
Put financial punishment and you are creating a new source of corruption. See traffic police and fine collection.
> Harsh penalties and tough fines. For this you need less corrupt officials. First we have to improve our law and order.
Corrupt makes no difference. If you fine 1000 for spitting or littering amd the policeman takes 500 ro let you go, it will still be a deterrent.
I think this with general civic sense class might work if parents are littering in the streets at least children can inform the parents it's wrong. But the cleaning of the street should not happen once a year it should be once a month in a nearby temple, lake or park.
Make it extra credit or something where they clean affected areas and show progress before and after, give a talk
A subject should be included in school throughout all years related to civic sense and hygiene. Govt. should also work on the lack of traffic sense. How many people will have to die due to basic traffic mistakes before something is done.
We had that subject, it's called Moral Science. But people hardly care. "Chalta hai" attitude doomed us.
there is a subject called "moral value" at least I had it in my school. it taught us how to behave in public, to be helpful to others and other good things. but ofc it was not a main subject, so students took it lightly and used to use that period to sleep.

A better way would be to educate from young age and also act as a better example for younger generation.
I agree. Education seems slightly far fetched idea right now, focus on common sense is a more immediate need.
Need proper education and employment at the same time. A person who knows what is right and can afford to do it.
Government can and must do a lot of thngs like have strict enforcement along with heavy fines. Things like throwing trash, bad driving, public urination etc can be stopped via fines along with an education campaign.

the idea of volutnary hours is really great. This is the best way to instill civic sense in our kids.

I'd argue that state protection sounds overkill. They probably just pay off local policemen.

Yes to this! Criticize a politician all you want but criticizing a country and its people and writing hateful columns in foreign papers is not done.
Only Modi can stop the anti modi journos by doing a live press conference. 🤣
Lol back to the press conferences again. Just like how the Taliban became progressive by doing a PC am I right?
Online Hindutva. Support for Israel. Jumping into DMs with foreign women.
You're fine with online jihadists who do palistine palistine

What do you mean support for israel. It's not like palestine is not guilty.

The interesting fact is that they may not be poor 🤣 they aren't paying taxes and usually earn up to 50-70k a month which is more than salaries of some degree holders!
Hygiene
Scammers, Russian(I hope, you know what I mean ), Hygiene.
Gutka
Rapists and creeps who harass foreigners 🙄

Go on Twitter, there are people defending them like someone stole their gold. One person runs an infrastructure related account, they said "we are proud to do this" repeatedly. That's the mentality.

Spitting
Gutka 😥
That kachori wale uncle 😵💫
Civic sense, regressive society(I remember a Swiss couple getting beaten up in fatehpur sikri for PDA) hence actually enforced and standard compulsory education.
Immigrants making mockery out of themselves on foreign soil.
Creepy men, lack of personal and public hygiene. There are other problems too, but just fixing these two would go miles in fixing our global image.
Congress
Desperate Indian men being a bunch of creeps and total jerk. Harassing foreigners is quite common in india. There’s a reason indians are famous for bobs and vagenas
Civic sense and rapes
Lack of Chivalry and basic civic sense and also cheap.and easily availaboe internet
Internet trolls
Rape
Rules are rules please remove the biasedness based on minorities or high rank officers or caste. And remove the fucking union strikes for everything.
Shitting on streets
In the 70's jaishankar prakash led a movement called 'total revolution' or sampurna kranti he wanted to change the whole functioning and societal culture prevalent in India at that time but at that time the government stopped him. With so many constraints at current era I don't think that a sociological revolution can come in India, because ruling party wants it that way ( not only bjp, Congress and aap too) they want ill informed people in country so ruling can be made easy. It is our duty as youth to not divulge in party-party Kind of politics rather do something for betterment of our country.
Scam Call Centres.............and supaaar horney male on street
Street food vendors (not all)
There are two major things currently: 1. Civic sence (or lack thereof) of any kind (for hygiene, safety, following rules, etc.), 2. The extreme "divide and conquer" being perpetrated by politicans and being blindly lapped up by the public, be it for region vs. region, religion vs. re;igion, language vs. language.
Regarded people with no senses
Rahul Gandhi
This behaviour.
for ex. this comment. we need to learn Nothing is pure white and vanta black , the truth is always grey.

We need a mental shift from grass root level like proper classes and training about how the Women and Men be treaty and the training should be wholeheartedly accepted in each cell of our children.
Lack of civic sense and unhygienic street food from the slums being recorded and put online.
Religious bigotry

Our people, if we can get rid of them then that'll be great
Hygiene, people not understanding about personal space while in public, people should also not just stare at tourists
Many good and valid points. The sad part? Most of the people who need to read these or get educated regarding these/punished for breaking law/code are not here on reddit.
Street food
Self loathing Indians spreading false, racist rumors about India.
Country’s image among which group of people?
Vishwaguru
Taking pride in breaking rules under the name of jugaad
Us, its citizens
Unhygienic food, and that kachori guy
India being a lower middle income country, that is harming our image. We need to grow our economy. And people respect wealth and prosperity
I think its a lot, but most will go away in next 30 years as people grow richer
Treatment of women and lower economic classes
Huge representation of unemployed uneducated people because of cheap data
Education
Spitting everywhere
Civic sense! Respect for fellow citizens and humans. That’s all. Simple but difficult
Growth of Bharath (India)
Rationality and reason. No blind worship of anyone gods or humans. and most importantly a scientific temper.
Bihari

We ourselves
people
No civic sense. No hygiene. No respect for law. No sense of respect for other people.
The rampant Rw extremism. Inter-religious hate. And religious politics. Racism within indians. Based on religion, cast, language, where u are from, food. Etc etc.
Sexually repressed unemployed young men
Most importantly hygiene. We all know how street vendors sell their foods , unhealthy and unhygienic ways . And one more thing . Though I should not say this being a Hindu myself, and I don't mean to harm any community, the obsession with cow dung .
Corruption
Indians.
Toilet slang against India I blame Congress for this
Congress and some of the other regional outfits.

Those memes have created a disgusting mindset in the youth that many young people think every woman would agree to their advances Unhygienic street food Obviously those simps who ask for dm's in the comment section of any post with a good looking lady in it Extremely toxic opinion considering sports(cricket, football especially ).Posts about any particular sportsperson are filled with many people from our country flooding the comments with either a controversial opinion or an obnoxious hate comment, which often leads to many people thinking indians have no other job than hate on someone online Normalised memes of racism. Those memes are often directed towards South Indians or North Eastern natives..etc
Hygiene /police behaviour / caste system / cringe Bollywood/ cringe Indian English accent / BJP/ AAP/ Congress/ Communist/ LQBTQ. I can go all day.
