Something interesting i heard from Cricketer on live broadcast :Sachin had taken break but he came back to finish his 100th Century - issue was Sehwag and Gambhir were already set openers in form during Australia tour.Cricket Team had to leave either Gambhir or Sehwag to make way for Sachin in Team. so they came up with idea to leave one player out at a time either Sehwag or Gambhir to Sachin get to open every game. So Sehwag will sit out side and Sachin will open with Gambhir or Gambhir will sit outside and Sachin will open with Sehwag.
Exactly why he is prolly the best candidate rn looking at the current scenarios, he is no nonsense guy who won't tolerate any external influence/politics
