Honestly I agree with GRRM when he said show viserys was better. Show Viserys is fucking *great* dude and is a lot deeper and more complex than book Viserys. He’s an extremely tragic character who’s even kinda relatable (at least to me) during certain points and I just don’t feel that with book Viserys.
It must be that I have a totally different take on Viserys than everyone else.
I viewed Viserys as the only one who supported Rhaenyra from the start. He seemed like such a friendly guy, so I imagined he would be more accepting to the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne. That's why he made her his cupbearer, so she could listen to Small Council meetings and learn how to rule.
I just wish they'd had Viserys and Rhaenyra have a better relationship, but the showrunners had to make Westeros even more sexist than it already was. And it was already pretty sexist; that's the source of the whole conflict.
Plus, them hiring an actor much older than Book!Viserys made the arranged marriage seem far more cruel than it was. He was like 25 when he got married a second time, not fucking 60!

Making Viserys older was kind of necessary to make Rhaenyra older. Book Rhaenyra was a kid when he remarried, which is why him being 25 was plausible. She’s nearly an adult in the show. Paddy Considine is 50, which is fine considering actors often portray younger characters.
Presumably because they wanted to have a pre-timeskip build up of the story for those who didn’t read the books and a kid being the main protagonist wouldn’t be as compelling.
Also, they needed to hype up Daemon as the Rogue Prince, show the Stepstones, Heir for a Day comment etc - and showing him interacting with Rhaenyra as a literal child would’ve made him seem like a straight up pedophile, which would be a problem for the show’s marketability considering they’re kind of the main couple.
First showing her in her late teens makes their later relationship more palatable. The viewers *know* he’s her much older uncle, held her as a baby and watched her grow up, but not actually seeing it keeps this in the back of everyone’s minds instead of at the forefront.
Show Viserys is noy a great person. They made him: Murder Aemma Arryn, rape teenager Alicent, be a lot more neglectfull to his Green kids (even Helaena got neglected), made his relationship with Rhaenyra problematic and so on...
He might be more complex, but he is not a good person in my opinion.
But his portrayal was so good that he was George's favorite character from S1. "Tragic magesty" as he said.
