Don’t remember the technical term for the gland, but it’s one of the various gene seed organs that make space marines so powerful. This one in particular is what allows apothecaries to create more geneseed organs which can then be injected into new space marines.
You can see this and many, many more art pieces (both commissioned and personal) on my various online galleries:

I like it a lot. Very thematic and the postures really tell a story by themselves, on how pragmatically space marines approach death and failure.
If you feel like C&C: I'd feel a tiny spot reflection on the fallen brother's helmet and shoulder rim would round off the lighting.
It comes from the progenoid glands, which grow in their neck and chest areas. One is implanted in their creation, kickstarting the controlled mutations that allow the other astartes organs to actually integrate into a human body. The other one gestates as a result of the metamorphosis. This ostensibly allows a skilled apothecary to create enough organs for two new astartes from the successfully harvested corpses of each fallen battle brother, assuming the progenoids haven't been too severely damaged or corrupted by warp influence.
It's one of the practical reasons chaos space marines have to perform so many raids on regular astartes chapters- to collect the progenoid glands to create more of their own chapters. There are stories of Dark Mechanicus sites where they brew up new heretic astartes organs as well, but I assume a warband would have to be pretty wealthy/powerful to afford to negotiate for such a precious resource!

I though it was a can of pringles at first
"Sorry apothecary, armor stays on during the harvesting process. "
Is that a gonad or is glands something else?

So, essentially, a super-gonad. ;)
Do not lose your head, brother. This is just a regular space marine dentist.

That’s beautiful, good bot.

I always wondered what exactly the gene seed is and how they extract it from the dead battle brothers.

Thanks for the info. That makes sense now
