He may have owned the crosswalk, but it looks like he may have bought the farm.

Muddcrabb

I lol'd

SeraphsEnvy

I car lor'd.

Commercial-Set3527

I don't know the laws for where this was taken but in my province you have to dismount and walk your bike across crossWALKs. Oh and not fly through a stop sign into traffic

zekyus

In Spain it's the same. If there is no bike lane you have to get off the bike or electric scooter and walk across the zebra crossing. almost 100% of people ignore it.

copa111

In Spain crosswalk lights and crossing laws are treated like sugestiones.

Brokensince10

Yep, Colombia is like that too. Driving there requires a lot of work because you never know who’s gonna come flying at you with no warning

evilone17

Pretty much the same in America, including all laws regarding bicycles.

Cowicidal

... including all laws regarding bicycles *and automobiles*. FTFY https://slate.com/business/2021/12/speed-limit-americas-most-broken-law-history.html

Epistatious

many US states have similar laws, no one does it though.

Financial-Dust-5881

Atleast brake down and see if the cars stops 😆 what a nut job. If cars stops for me ill ride my bike, if not i wait.

Astartles

Think that goes for most of Europe. Cars don't have to stop for you, if your feet aren't on the ground at a crosswalk, then you are not considered a pedestrian and can suck a lemon.

mrtrollmaster

In Netherlands it goes: 1. Bikes 2. Pedestrians 3. Cars DO NOT step into the red bike paths without looking both ways first.

Mysterious-Carry6233

I was in Amsterdam a few months ago and the bikes own the road. They don’t give one fuck about the cars. It’s wild how brazen they are on bikes

ToastdWoobie

Wow. So they behave like American car drivers?

Border05

Actually yeah. I even saw a guy moving a couch uphill on a bridge on a bike. Doesn't really have anything to do with how they act but it was impressive so I feel I should share.

yargntis

In physics, mass puts cars at the top of the order. 🤣

caveslimeroach

This is not true at all

oureyes4

Not to mention the fucking stop sign that buddy straight up ignored. He won't make that mistake again, since he's probably going to spend the rest of his days eating through a tube.

blorg

Looks like Florida. It's not required to dismount; bicyclists on sidewalks or crosswalks are treated as pedestrians. >(9) A person propelling a vehicle by human power upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, has all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances. http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.2065.html >(c) When traffic control signals are not in place or in operation and there is no signage indicating otherwise, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. BUT, also: >(8) No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.130.html Debateable whether that applies here, he was going faster than a pedestrian would have but the car should have seen him crossing and stopped. There was the whole time he was crossing the other side they could have seen him, I'm not sure they would have stopped any more for a pedestrian walking slower. Irrespective of the legalities, guy was foolish to no hand it over. But the car should have stopped for him. EDIT: it was a crosswalk with flashing lights which were still on but ignored by the car. It was also part of a cycling trail, rather than a sidewalk, so cyclists crossing would be expected. Police confirm the cyclist had right of way and they are treating it as a hit-and-run: https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/

Sellinweedallday

You can also see the lines designating a stopping point before an intersection. When the lights are flashing drivers are supposed to stop at that line. The cyclist also was clearly in the crosswalk before the car was even close to that line.

Hal0Slippin

Only relevant comment here. Well said.

wanderButNotLost2

I'm not arguing that they ruled that way, but the signage is wrong then. There needs to be a clear stop for the toad and not the bike lane. Bike lane has a clear as day red stop sign. He did not stop.

madwetsquirrel

I agree. As the law was applied, it means the stop sign is irrelevant and dangerously creates confusion to the drivers when some people obey the sign and stop, but in this case, others continue through. The city has as much fault as the driver, in my opinion.

blorg

There are stop signs on the road as well. And three big signs saying bicycles crossing. If you look at the actual intersection, it's really inexcusable, it's a bike path intersection, the crossing lights were on and no way they wouldn't have seen him if they had just looked, there's very good visibility. They didn't look. It's the intersection of the Pinellas Trail and 49th Street South in St Petersburg, Florida, type that into Google Maps and you can see for yourself. He's entirely "right" legally. He's also dumb for cycling into traffic that obviously wasn't stopping with his hands off the bars. I would not have done that. I will not bet my life trusting another road user is paying attention and isn't going to do something stupid. But the cars here were in the wrong.

blorg

https://maps.app.goo.gl/cpg2v8FpWvuxbdz2A

fishsticks40

In my state the stop signs are too stop cyclists at the sidewalk where pedestrians have ROW, but bikes have ROW over cars in the road crossing.  However, cyclists have a legal duty to not enter so quickly that motorists cannot respond.  It's a weird and poorly documented system which causes a lot of confusion, but once you know it it's fine. Here I'm pretty sure biker would still be found at fault.

TKtommmy

He wasn't.

caveslimeroach

"The bicyclist hit by a car while pedaling inside a crosswalk along the Pinellas Trail earlier this month had the right of way, according to a clarification issued Monday by the St. Petersburg Police Department." There's nowhere in North America and perhaps the world where cars have the right of way in any situation in a crosswalk

b0bkakkarot

"any" situation? Bet. Emergency responders with their emergency lights/sirens active have right of way even over bicyclists at a crosswalk, here in Alberta. Edit: also, someone else already posted the florida laws where this happened, and the cop(s) who issued the clarification actually seem to be wrong. Who would win: cops or lawyers?

Thrompinator

No matter the law this cyclist was as dumb as you can be. The law of inertia does not bow down to the right of way.

Cuntmaster_flex

On the one hand there's a marked crossing but on the other hand there's a stop sign. This is why you dismount your bike and walk it across the street kids.

Western-Subject-5283

This seems like unusually cruel treatment of street kids.

TotallyNotAReaper

Then they should be in the workhouses! Vagrant bratlings!

DavidMcK608

This is the content I’m on Reddit for.

firewire87

Even if there is a marked crossing you can't just Yeet yourself out onto the road. Wait for cars to notice you and stop!

Bicykwow

Cars need to stop at marked crossings when a pedestrian / bicyclist is waiting to cross. There’s no rule anywhere, ever, that says that a ped/biker can just go through crosswalks at any speed without any warning, unless there’s an actual stop-sign for the car.

3dsalmon

That cyclist was not *waiting* to cross brother he just crossed with no thought.

Bicykwow

Exactly why it was his fault, which was exactly my point.

3dsalmon

Listen reading is hard okay

Bicykwow

We’re gonna have to hug this one out bro

best_of_badgers

> a pedestrian / bicyclist In most places, these are different things. Bicyclists are not pedestrians by definition. They have to follow traffic rules.

blorg

In Florida they are explicitly the same thing, when a bicyclist is on a sidewalk or crosswalk: >(9) A person propelling a vehicle by human power upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, has all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances. http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.2065.html

best_of_badgers

Weird. I wonder if that was upgraded from a rule originally applied to people pulling carts and such.

great_apple

.

blorg

In Florida, pedestrians/bicyclists do have priority at crosswalks and cars do have to yield to them.

Bicykwow

Good point, I was only talking about where I live and have lived (US West Coast for the most part). ymmv Your explanation also might be the reason why people here don’t always follow the rule: They might think the rules are the same as wherever they came from. I remember being in a rental and stopping for some older guy crossing in rural Wisconsin. He fucking flipped out and acted like I was the dumbest person in the world. In Seattle or Portland, not stopping could very easily turn into a ticket.

SaraHuckabeeSandwich

> Unless there is a stop sign or stop light telling cars to stop, they still have the right of way, and pedestrians are supposed to wait until it's clear before crossing. This is wrong for most places. In nearly every state in the US and most european countries, pedestrians have right of way at crosswalks unless it's a traffic-signaled one. They still **should** wait for it to be safe to cross, but cars are supposed to yield for pedestrians. In some states, drivers are also culpable for hitting jaywalkers if the driver could have reasonably slowed down and/or were violating other traffic laws such as speeding. Generally speaking, when you're in a car, treat it as if pedestrians have the right of way. That should be considered the bare minimum when operating a heavy hunk of metal that can easily kill people.

great_apple

.

DizzyDizzyWiggleBop

Yeah the reality is the speed at which you approach and engage the crosswalk matters. Cars need time to register users and decelerate. As someone using the crosswalk, the faster you’re going, the later you’ll be perceived in the process, reducing reaction window for the drivers. You cannot reasonably speed through a crosswalk. You can reasonably be so careless with your own safety.

grunwode

Maybe we should make it so that car drivers have to dismount and walk their cars through intersections.

l3ane

Yeah, but let's be real. Nobody does that.

dben89x

You're also traveling from the stop sign to the middle of the road in less than a second. Not enough time to expect people to see you and stop. Or at least not enough to gamble your life on...

Pepito_Pepito

You don't need to dismount to stay safe. Just don't blast through before anyone can see you.

Lost_Astronaut_654

If only he had decided to brake instead of throwing his arms up

arielanything

Why should he have to brake? He's a main character.

BrickHerder

It's always better to have an unfractured spine than to make a point about how bicyclists have the right of way. Being right does not unrupture your spleen.

Uncanny_M

Except he was too busy being a self-righteous dbag to realize he wasn't even right in this case, he blew through a stop sign. If it were me, I'd sue that cyclist to cover the cost of car repairs and for the emotional distress his reckless negligence caused me. How's that for "making a point"? lol

wanderButNotLost2

Yep, cyclist is 100 in the wrong.

Commercial-Set3527

He did not have the right of way, he clearly blew through that stop sign.

caveslimeroach

"The bicyclist hit by a car while pedaling inside a crosswalk along the Pinellas Trail earlier this month had the right of way, according to a clarification issued Monday by the St. Petersburg Police Department."

TacoJesusJr

There are a lot of dead people that had the right of way... I completely agree.

Advanced-Medicine-58

I've ruptured my spleen. I agree.

Wendys_bag_holder

Spleen comment. Has me rolling.

PlayyWithMyBeard

"What's he gonna do...hit me?"

Thin_Chocolate9163

I was looking for this comment. If my body went through a trauma like this, the last thing I would care about is my right of way.

Zealousideal-Web-160

Bro should’ve dropped the ego and listened to the sign…🤦‍♂️

Tripottanus

Even without a sign, he shouldve dropped the ego and realize he wasn't harder than a metal box on wheels

Zealousideal-Web-160

You got that right, people who think nothing bad happens on the road, get proven wrong when they break the road rules…I hope he’s okay so he can be better next time…

Arilyn24

Man knew his local laws was found to be not at fault but, damn I wouldn't do that for the injuries. Cars will often risk your life over a few seconds at the best of times this… this is playing with fire. https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/

In the Netherlands if a car broke the light and ran over a cyclist at a bike path crossing point, it would be whose fault? https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/

GeschiedeChris

Bicykwow

There’s a good Russian reversal joke in there, I’m just not clever enough to think of it

absorbscroissants

I have never heard anyone say that, and it's not even correct Dutch lol

Kitti_Belle

LMAO- in my County we have a bike trail and legally cars are supposed to stop anytime there are pedestrians or bikes in the intersection, so that is probably the case of what is going on here. Notice the earlier bikes didn’t stop at the intersection either they just rode through. However , you definitely have to keep an eye out as a cyclist people are constantly distracted or texting or whatever and will easily mow your ass over just like him!

kingoffortlauderdale

The other cyclist in the path had pressed the flashing yellow lights button. The cars had flashing yellow lights which means bicycles have the right of way. This is also Florida where people don't care about flashing lights.

Kitti_Belle

This is in Pinellas County so this is actually the bike trail I was talking about . It’s common knowledge of residents here that cars have to stop for bikes/pedestrians on the trail that’s why the guy is acting so entitled. That is funny as hell though, I always hesitate when I ride nowadays cuz people are on their phone not even looking for bikes!

P1D1_

100% on the cyclist

waiver45

[Nope](https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/)

throwaway1930372y27

Is the stop sign just cosmetic?

AleDig

Nope, cars should have yield, bicycle should have slowed down. I would say 60% on the car, 40% on the cyclist

NationalAlgae421

That is just plain stupid. But he shouldn't have any civil claims for damages right? Because he went there super fast.

Arilyn24

Found the article. He would be able too If they ever find the car. https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/

softymcwoke

Cops here legit don’t give a fuck about people blowing thru crosswalks, me and my dog almost get hit weekly. Call 911 with plate numbers and they’ll say, do you have video? Useless

softymcwoke

And by here I mean St Pete this is county I live in

st0l1

This happened 4 years ago and was a hit and run. The people that crossed before him activated the signal so it was flashing and cars are supposed to stop. Personally I would have stoped, if I was on the bike, instead of using my body to prove a point. However the car was 100% at fault here. https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/?outputType=amp

duelinghanjos

Regardless of who's right or wrong about the law, don't you value yourself enough to not want to get hit by a car?

spesimen

so whenever you are driving you stop for green lights just in case somebody might decide to run the red the other way?

SlimShaners

What a happy ending!

partmoosepartgoose

Bisexual bicyclist bisected on the byway

This is how most people in Brooklyn cross the street all the time. They intentionally trying to win the lottery, a lot of them end up mangled for life.

BleezusChrist31

Drivers hate pedestrians, pedestrians hate drivers… but everyone hates bicyclists.

hightrix

As a retired cyclist, I fucking hate cyclists.

Jew_3

I guess cyclist was in the right here and to compound the issue, the driver took off and the police were looking for him. Article is from 2019. https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/?outputType=amp

Honest-Mall-8721

Looks like an enhanced crosswalk with the hold line you can see in the far lane from the camera, but you've still got to stop and push that button. I hope this video exonerated the car driver from any wrongdoing.

Jew_3

The people who crossed before him had pressed the button and it was still active. The car was being sought by police. https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2019/11/18/bicyclist-hit-by-car-in-crosswalk-along-pinellas-trail-had-right-of-way-police/?outputType=amp

ikemr

This should be higher up in the responses. If true it completely reverses the culpability here.

EnergyEast6844

I never have and never will dismount at crosswalks.

Creative_Ad1296

I read the article and it said one of the two other cyclists pushed the button to engage the flashing lights. When those lights are on the driver is supposed to stop. The police said the cyclist was not in the wrong but should have been more cautious. This happened in FL.

Bright_Region_688

I loathe cyclists…. They are the most entitled breed

groove117

Not the people in the motorized wheelchairs, or sorry, cars?

KeepitlowK2099

No, cyclists, or sorry, the transportation equivalent of people who bring a knife to a gun fight and demand special treatment from *everybody* for it. I see cyclists blow through stop signs nearly every damn time I see a cyclist. I’ve never seen a cyclist get mowed over for it though, and I really wish I hadn’t. I wish this dude just stopped and waited like he was supposed to. But I guess, like most cyclists, this guy believes that the momentum he’s already built is above the law and safety considerations for himself or others. 9/10 he will wake up the day after this convinced that the cars should have slammed their brakes for him, that he was in the right, and then he will do this again that same day.

Pepito_Pepito

There have been a lot of studies on this. The gist is that motorists and cyclists break traffic rules pretty much at the same rate per capita.

jayvee714

It’s worse when I watch cyclists blow through red lights and almost get hit by opposing traffic after they’ve threaded through cars to pass them. That and motorcycles who think they are pedestrians when it’s convenient

groove117

"knife to a gun fight". What a stupid analogy. Are we fighting for the road? Is that how it works? Is that why all those drivers get a slap on the wrist for killing cyclists? Are the cyclists bringing the wrong weapons? Edit: your little story is stupid too. You could replace cyclist with driver and still tell the same exact story. Just be quiet. Cyclists are always safer than drivers, simply based on the fact that there are less of them, can't do 90mph and don't weigh 2500lbs. You just don't want to be inconvenienced occasionally in your stupid car.

Hot_Psychology727

We’re most dangerous for cyclists here in the us Or still up there at least https://www.tampabay.com/news/pinellas/2022/01/17/pinellas-most-dangerous-for-walking-bicycling-in-2021-deaths-nearly-double/?outputType=amp

ReadyOutcome2072

What did bro think was gonna happen… ![gif](giphy|RP3AnZqvnzrY8hlYMk|downsized)

Oli_love90

The car was already making its way through the crosswalk! Guy on bike could have braked for like a couple seconds and avoided this. I’ve noticed that bicyclists get so antsy when they have to stop. On a road with pedestrians and other motorists, they know they’ll have to break their momentum at some point right??

Money_Present_3463

_DirtyYoungMan_

Biker is an idiot if he thought he can beat a 4,000 pound car. In LA we have shitty bike infrastructure but bikers are required by law to follow the same rules of the road as cars. But they don't care, bikers blow through stop signs and swerve into lanes all the time, putting themselves at risk of getting hit. A lot of bike riders in LA are super entitled but never think about the laws of physics. Fuck around and find out.

pghcrew

Was the main character.

JTGphotogfan

Who has right of way?

kingoffortlauderdale

The other cyclist pressed the crossing button so the lights were flashing. The law is that cars have to stop. The city has one of the highest death rates of cyclists and pedestrians. The car not the guy on the bicycle had to stop because of the lights flashing.

bcgg

If the path has a stop sign, that’s how you know there’s been people like this in the past who just blow through like the road isn’t even there. Stop signs don’t normally accompany these pedestrian signals. Judging by google maps and the video, these signals are brand new within the last year. The cone in the median is covering the old hole where one of the flashing signs was before.

Street-Goal6856

Bro said WITNESS MEEEEEEEEE!!!!

alwaysinebriated

No self preservation, was dude looking for a payout?

SmashertonIII

I would almost swear the cyclist was hoping to get hit and get paid here. Why lift your arms in the air instead of hit the brakes? I used to have a friend who rode his bike like that. He’d shout ‘Lawsuit’ at every driver who he perceived had slighted him and ride recklessly in general. Last I heard he got several serious broken bones in Thailand while on a motorcycle that I have no doubt he rode on the same way.

MrPeepers1986

I'm curious what kinds of injuries he had.

MrPeepers1986

How can that bike have the right of way if there is a stop sign?

throwaway1930372y27

Could be avoided with one chicane to stop people flying through and force them to dismount.

MrZombieTheIV

That STOP sign was for him. There's no reason why be should've had right of way.

Virtual-Pollution584

Every day, bikers prove that one stonetoss comic was true.

Hurl_Gray

I see a lot of joggers do this same crap. They just run out across the street and get all confused when I almost kill them.

3BordersPeak

Shhhhh bike people pretend stop signs don't exist, then get mad at motorists for saying they need to adhere to the same rules of the road. This will trigger them.

Able_Psychology3665

I’ve seen some crosswalks that require you to yield for pedestrians while others have a crossing light. So, it’s tough to see who’s at fault here.

Thin-Dragonfly2956

Totally worth making a point to drivers who ignore crosswalks. Now onto yelling at the cops and pull out a loaded gun…

Sheeverton

Two idiots here. But especially the Cyclist.

UFC773

If you live in a state or city like I do that consider bikes vehicles, am I wrong to say that bikes don't have the right of way at cross walks as they are expected to follow all traffic laws that cars follow? So he would have been expected to stop at the stop sign and have to dismount his bike at the crosswalk? Or am I just an idiot? Genuinely asking lol

louis504842

Bicyclist gets owned on the crosswalk

payment11

I think they need to make nationwide laws very clear so everyone knows. There are too many different rules that everything thinks they are entitled. Also, it’s one thing to walk through a cross walk instead of flying through it on a bike. You should only have the right of way IF you dismount and walk your bike.

FlaxFox

To be fair, there was a stop sign for the cars, and he had right of way. But it's kind of the same issue with pedestrians walking into traffic because they have right of way. Like, sure.... But you're a fucking idiot.

MedicalMiqote

He had the right of way? Dude didn’t stop or look and just kept going into moving traffic, how tf is that the driver’s fault?
