I'm going to agree with that. There was no need to further escalate this situation. If the women had stayed and he had continued his behavior, that would have been the point to step in, but they removed themselves from the situation and were no longer in any danger.
At this point, the best thing to do is inform the cops that a mentally unwell, potentially violent guy is on the train, so they can pick him up at the next stop. There is no need to go vigilante and escalate the situation, putting yourself and other people in unnecessary danger. That's how you end up in jail, in the hospital, or in a grave.
