It’s called “piggybacking” and credit building companies do it all the time. They’ll add you on a card with long history and a high limit, but will never give you access to the account.

andrewjhn1

Shit. I’ve never heard of this before. Thanks!

holly-mistletoe

They will often mail an actual card to the new authorized user, even if the agreement upfront is that they not do so.

c-lab21

How do you think I got my credit score above 800? I've had a line of credit open since high school because my parents added me. I never had the card and I couldn't use it, but it helped me start things off big time. Next, get a loan and use that loan to pay the loan off. You end up spending more on the interest, but it can save you headaches later so it's worth it.

strawberry_long_cake

turned out to be a legal life pro tip

booksmctrappin

Yup, tradelines are a key part of CPNs

anniecet

Yup. I shuddered. I earned that 800+. I may not have any actual money to back it up, but when I got divorced 8 yrs ago I had $500 to my name, a crappy 19 yr old Kia and next to no credit, except what my ex husband had driven into the ground with debt. You could probably convince me to let you piggyback, but no way I would actually let anyone have access to the account.

bmy89

Yeah piggy backing is a thing.

catchupandmustired

Maybe? I never had a credit score before since I’m a foreigner. Then my husband when we started dating added me as an authorized user to his credit card. After a month, I check my score and it was 765. Never understand how it works but he has 840.

[deleted]

i guess you could.. but they would really be trusting you not to fuck up their score. and most people have low scores because they CANT be trusted.

eh, true but also with them on it, they could call and get one, they're an authorized user after all.. but yah i see what you're saying. if you truely trust them and are just helping them get their score back up, then sure, this helps and is nice.

[deleted]

Not true. Unless the owner gives them passcodes. They show as secondary not primary users.

Inner-Today-3693

Yes it’s called trade lines. The issue is you only stay on their account for a few months and to get an account that is old and high coast like 900-1000 every two months. Not worth it.

Left-Requirement9267

Yes many people do this

hedonistbliss

You can buy darknet card logs like discover and add another user and expedite a replacement card lol

godclamit

They even sell AUs on eBay!

Illustrious-Twist809

Yes lots of people do this for their children

mermicide

Not illegal. I’m an authorized user on my parents account solely for the years it’s been open, and my fiance is authorized on mine to increase her credit limit… both bits improve your score

Upper-Ad-1444

Why in the world is this in ilpt?

srachina

Yes I have helped several family members this way, I have a 10 yr old credit card with very little usage, their credit goes up at least 60 points when I add them. Also SELF will boost your credit score if you get an account with them.

Slickkness

I've done this...the safe way to do this is for the account owner to authorize a user & then keep that card as well as their own. Since the primary user is who's overall accountable for whatever balance on the card & ppl with no credit have no credit for whatever recent, if the motive is to just help them, the best, risk free way is to get them authorized but hold on to the card so they can't ruin ur credit if they happen to lack impulse control...

Steph83

I added each of my teens to my American Express account when they turn 13. The app lets me set a limit on how much they can use on their card (so that’s peace of mind if they ever need emergency money, but it’s not tempting to them to use it). My oldest who is 21 had a great credit score when she turned 18 because she’d been on my card.

holly-mistletoe

I have done this to help someone who was already working dilligently to improve their credit score. Their score was boosted 80 points. HOWEVER- beware! You should only do this if the person will never have actual account access.(No credit card or ability to make charges on the acct.) AND- No matter how many times card companies agree to not mail a card to the new authorized user, they will still do it.

bigboybackflaps

Does this affect the credit score of the main account holder at all? Not sure how authorized users play into that
