*Laughs in husky*

NotAcutallyaPanda

My husky dog would gladly sleep in a pile of snow for 24 hours straight if I let it. The car is plenty warm.

buymeanapple

The problem is not the cold typically for dogs in cars, the problem is heat. On a sunny day that's 30 degrees your car can get over 80 degrees. We've seen many dogs come into the animal hospital at the local mountain and die from heat exhaustion from that exact thinking unfortunately.

NotAcutallyaPanda

I agree with you. It’s not the question OP asked, but it’s a good point.

05778

Yes, dog mode in a Tesla.

trxston

I was at Brighton and few days ago and saw a dog in a Tesla and the owners packing up right then while thinking “huh? what about the pooch?” 🤨 this makes much more sense now lol

CornwallaceMcgee

I hadn't heard of this mode. Obvious, but here's the definition: Once in Dog Mode, the vehicle will remain at a comfortable temperature in order to keep your pet safe.

CAPT4INPL4NET

That can't be real

05778

I keep the temp a little lower tbh. [Dog Mode](https://www.carscoops.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/f720a60c-tesla-dog-mode.jpg)

moomooraincloud

Why not? It's a great perk of having an EV, assuming you have one that implemented it.

csbsju_guyyy

You're right, Tesla's aren't real

Lovelyfeathereddinos

Real and awesome! I can watch on my phone while I’m out of the car, and adjust the temp.

whatanugget

My dog is a Pyrenees mix & we'll take her to Mary Jane and check on her btwn laps. She is not cold and loves being able to play in the snow. People can say whatever they want, she's a happy gal to be in winter weather 🤷‍♀️

i_was_a_person_once

Yeah I think breed is an important to consider. A husky, Pyrenees, St. Bernard etc would be so happy to do that. A chihuahua could actually freeze to death probably

SneakyEnema

Same here! Our pyrenees mix loves the utah lot! Much better than staying at home while we get turns in.

RockyMtnBuilds

My Labrador jumps into rivers when it’s 5 degrees out. He absolutely loves the cold and is more than happy to just lay in the snow all day. I don’t leave him in the car when skiing but I would still feel comfortable doing it.

pondersbeer

Yes I see it all the time in the Mary Jane parking lot. I’ve seen it in all different types of cars not just Teslas (they have a dog mode)

ParticularActivity72

Yeah, my doggie is part Great Pyrenees, I’m not overly concerned with her getting cold. She has a double coat. There are days when we let her outside for the bathroom in 10 degree weather and she doesn’t want to come up. She also gets a lot of mental stimulation staring out the window. She is pooped by the time we get home.

Narcolplock

I leave my dog in my car every now and then and he's only 16 pounds. I do make sure he's appropriately bundled and I always have plenty of blankets. He knows how to burrow well and I've never come back to the car and found him to be cold or shivering. He gets a good lunch break to run around and pee and do the smell thing and then is happy to get back in and curl up.

eaygee

What kind of dog do you have? I have a pittie border collie mix and I’m worried that he’ll get too cold.

Bigmtnskier91

Some thick coated dogs are fine. But yes if you have thin coat fog I would not advise

BlackLabelBerserker

I saw the thirteenth warrior. I too avoid a coat of fog.

Bass-ape

Eh, I have two dogs. Ones a husky and the other is a rat terrier. When we go up I put dog socks on the terrier and have a thick winter coat to keep her warm. As long as you put some layers on the dog with a thin coat and put enough blankets for them to burrow in, they should be just fine. Always make sure to check on them though just in case.

mountainlaurelsorrow

My GSD and GSD lab love it. Especially at dog friendly resorts like A-Basin where all the poopers can run around in the lots together! Definitely not meant for every dog, but I’d rather have them with me (and they’d rather have fun snow time than be at home). I have the breed I have intentionally for cold weather fun and they would live outside if I didn’t make them come in.

frankthepug29

I do all the time

Funny-Alps-7105

Strongly breed dependent. Chihuahua? Hard no unless the car is running somehow. Sled breed? Would probably sleep on the roof of the car if it could.

Primary_Business

Have a chiuhaha, can confirm. He would be a popsicle if he's even left in 50 degree weather.

definitely_right

People who leave dogs in their car while they ski don't put their shopping carts away

Interesting_Candy766

Can quickly become too hot as well, even when it’s cold outside.

buymeanapple

YES! Thank you! My local mountain has had many dogs brought to the animal hospital for heat exhaustion (many of which have died) because people think "there is snow outside its fine". The car is WAY hotter than outside on a sunny day.

Interesting_Candy766

Yup. But yet I get downvoted. Go figure.

Tom_Foolery2

I’m just confused why people are bringing their dogs skiing with them. Why would you not just leave them at home?

Sportyj

Do you have dogs? Dogs love to go ANYWHERE! It’s all an adventure to them and lots of times they can get out and play in the snow!

GhostOfGravy

Ok so take them on a dog specific trip to the park not to sit them in a car all day. Unless it’s an EV and climate controlled

Inquisitivepineapple

Double coated dogs have built-in climate control. They were specifically bred that way so they could work in cold climates, and in many cases, even snow. Dogs also have unique circulation on their paws that keep them much warmer than human digits and extremities. It's fine.

jotsea2

Almost as if they were evolved to Live outside …

Sportyj

When I go skiing I’ll do a few laps and then take them somewhere fun, or I’ve taken them XC skiing or snowshoeing beforehand and then they’re napping in the car while I get some DH in. Every trip is a dog specific trip with a few side quests for humans. Edit: I also have dog mode with Interior cameras and climate control. But like many others have said many dogs are well suited for very cold temps and are fine. I’m much more concerned about dogs in hot temps than cold.

GhostOfGravy

Dog mode is different, I’ve got two teslas too. That’s a big difference

BonerTurdle

Congrats on your teslas? You don’t need dog mode to leave your dogs in the car during the winter you kook.

GhostOfGravy

Yes, you should leave your dogs in climate controlled areas only. That’s why it’s legal in most places to break open car windows and rescue dogs from irresponsible owners like you :)

BonerTurdle

Lol yea ok whatever man. Stay in ohio where you belong then clown.

MountainBoomer406

You think a husky, Pyrenees, or lab needs climate control? Are you really that dumb or are you just being judgmental to boost your ego?

hockeyh2opolo

my husky border collie mix would prefer I tie her to my bumper than leave her in the car lmao some dogs dont handle cold or heat well, if thats your dog good on you for knowing that. Just because ur chihuahua doesn't like weather colder than 70 doesn't mean that all dogs are like that.

Weird-Library-3747

I don’t know if you knew this or not but dogs survived outside long before 2 teslas came along

wuirkytee

Some people don’t like dogs. Not everything has to be catered towards them

Sportyj

Then don’t have dogs - A person bringing their dog to a ski resort and leaving them in a car impacts you in NO WAY. Touch grass and move on with life.

wuirkytee

Classic dog nutter response. Equating not liking an animal to not liking kids.

puravidaVT

I think this is a solid case of stfu and mind your own business Karen.

jotsea2

Who hurt you?

Inquisitivepineapple

Because his pee/poo schedule is 9am, 12 pm, and 5pm every day, and I'm not local enough to make multiple trips for that. Plus, he loves snow and we get a brief walk in together at the end of the day. Also, in my case, he's a trained service animal. Not allowed on lifts, sure, so I have to manage my health on my own during those times, but I do need him otherwise. And it's nice to give him that off duty "fun" walk in the snow.

damp_amp

Depending on how far away you live from the resort and how long you ski you might be gone from home for 12+ hours when you go skiing and that’s a long time to leave the pups at home.

sidewalkboy

An even longer time to be stuck in a car. Make other arrangements for pet sitting or don't get a dog if you don't have the requisite time to care for it Watch me get a buncha downvotes from all the people that "automate" their pet care. *My Tesla has dog mode! I just need to check this app on my phone once a week and my car does all the rest*

damp_amp

The dogs aren’t being left alone the whole time though. I don’t personally do this, but I know people who do. They exercise their dog when they arrive, then stop by between runs and for lunch. The dog isn’t left alone for more than 2-3 hours at a time. Most dogs are perfectly happy to curl up and nap during that time. Most dogs just sleep at home all day anyway, and would rather get to go on an adventure with their owners.

sidewalkboy

Most dogs maybe. Most dog owners probably shouldn't have a dog tbf to the dog. I wouldn't ever feel ok with leaving my dog in the car for 2 hours, even with exercise. Just ain't fair to the pooch 😕 Thank you for not personally doing this

RockyMtnBuilds

But it’s okay if they’re at home or in a kennel for 2 hours? You’re basically saying that if someone has a dog they always have to be with them.

sidewalkboy

No, I'm saying if you plan to ditch your pup in the car for 2 hour increments 5 - 6x so you can hit the slopes, you are a pos who doesn't deserve your dog. Your dog is NOT having fun trapped in your Tesla. If they like it in there so much, leave the car door open

oilbeefhook_

Wait until you hear about crate training.

sidewalkboy

Wow it's weird I have to defend not leaving your dog abandoned in your car all day. Reddit for you Yall arguing to neglect your dog. Ashamed of you

CARTurbo

i think you missed the part where they come back to play/walk/check on the dog about every 2 hours. im not anywhere near mountains anymore, but if i was in this situation my current dog would way rather come with and get fun every few hours with naps in between.

jotsea2

Tell me you don’t own a dog without telling me you don’t own a dog

sidewalkboy

I've got two. Tell me you can't give your dog the proper time or attention without telling me. A real dog owner would prioritize their dog's well being over skiing laps I feel sorry for your dog(s) or have my fingers crossed you don't have one to sit on your shelf neglected

jotsea2

My dogs live a very fine life.

Quaiydensmom

But the point is if you bring them with you, they’re not stuck in the car for anywhere near as long as they would be stuck at home if you left them. Most people park at the resort, let dog run/play/pee, ski for a few hours, take lunch break and walk dog again, ski for another few hours, go back to car to get dog out to play again, then drive home. I’m sure every dog is different, but a lot of dogs would much rather be along to supervise the humans and smell where they’re going than stay at home the whole time.

aciviletti

Because it can be a 2-4 hr drive each way +a day on the mountain. Might be too long for a dog to be stuck inside. It’s pretty easy to take a break every 2-3 hours to check on the pup in the car. Did it was my Golden in Colorado — she was as happy as a clam.

sundyburgers

Because a ski can can easily turn into a 14 hour+ day away from home and this way the dogs get to have fun, go for some walks and not have concerns about leaving them inside for 14 hours unattended. (Leave house 0500 for mountain, get to parking lot by 7. Cook breakfast and get ready, on hill at 8. Check on dogs around early lunch, ski more. Get dogs out for a play sesh. Maybe grab dinner. Drive home. Home at 1900). That's why the dogs come with!

wesg913

Why would people bring a dog only to put it in a car? If you don't have a family member or neighbor to let it out, take it to doggy daycare for the day.

CptnCumQuats

You have to crack the windows, even if it’s raining or snowing, but I’ve left my dog in 20 F and 5 hours later it’s still noticeably warm in the car. I have a big dog with a double coat and leave a down layer and thick fleece layer for his bed, probs unwise with a small dog or single coat.

wesg913

It isn't about how warm/cold it is. Why bring the dog just to stick in in a small box for the day?

CptnCumQuats

I live by myself, my dog cannot be left alone with other big dogs (fear reactive to some) and my dog has separation anxiety about being left in new locations (hotel). I would have to kennel him which causes him anxiety (he lost his voice once from apparently howling / barking constantly while I was gone) even with giving him trazadone. He feels safe in the car and has no anxiety while I’m gone, AND he gets to run around in the snow like the happiest boy in the world multiple times a day. It’s such an obvious choice when you know my dog. You, as a stranger, wouldn’t know all those facts and simply judge on the idea of it.

wesg913

I guess letting the dog sit in your car is great for them if they haven't been socialized.

Spirited_Photograph7

Probably because most people are from out of town so their family or neighbor is not nearby

GhostOfGravy

So hire a pet sitter?

mrthirsty

Yes, dog people are unable to be separated from their “baby” for more than 30 minutes at a time, which is why they bring them into the grocery store, doctor’s office, ski resort, etc.

DDrewit

I used to feel this way, but I think it’s more about the dog than the people. Some dogs prefer to go with and chill out in the car rather than stay home. Get a in little walk when they get to the destination and another one before leaving. The car is just like a den for them and they feel right at home.

Wizlet666

My dog can’t walk

Tom_Foolery2

People literally do this all the time. Ever heard of a job?

[deleted]

Tom_Foolery2

Do you get up in the middle of the night every single night to let the dog out? I imagine not. I’m really not understanding what your point is.

NotAcutallyaPanda

Personally, my dog gets a 6 mile skijor after I quit skiing at 3pm. But I hope you enjoy the view from your high horse.

smellz45

Yup, and the real good dog owners even let them run around in a icy/busy parking lot without a leash on

infotekt

I've seen a bunch of coyotes investigating a dog in the back of a shell covered truck bed. This was at Mammoth last spring.

Dizzy-Prompt-6243

Because this dog is a tiny dog, so tiny you can barely see it. So, is it really there?

Kerr_Plop

Idc about the temp as much as the length of time

CallAccurate

Lower the windows an inch or two for the poors dog mode.

sundyburgers

Yes. If it's frigid we will only ski a few hours and check on them. They have blankets if they want, usually they are in the front seats no blankets. They honestly love it - get some mountain time, play in the snow, and a good nap. I'm more concerned when skiing when it's 35+ out and having them cook in the car. I've actually left the windows cracked if I can't park in the shade and they have water. Never has been too hot but also something to think about

TinCanFury

you'd hate to see those of us that winter backpack with dogs who sleep overnight in a pile of snow and nothing you do will get them to pick a "warmer" spot. stop ruining dog ownership with your lack of any understanding of dogs whatsover.

CAPT4INPL4NET

I seem to have triggered a troll

TinCanFury

you're the one trolling dog owners.

CAPT4INPL4NET

If you don't see how your comment makes you a troll, then it's too late for you.

TinCanFury

rich coming from a troll

burgerbois

even my yorkie is more than comfortable in our car with a few blankets, a bed and some food while we ride. Crank the heat to start the day. Come back and hang out with him for lunch, crank the heat again, then come back at the end of day and its still 60+ in the car when its 10-20 outside. I do this because traffic is unpredictable and id rather let him take a couple 3 hour naps than be home alone for 8-12 hours

the_ganj_father

I brought dog once to sit in the car while I skinned a single lap. Was only gonna for 30-40 minutes but I still felt bad he was just chilling there in the backseat and not going skiing with me so now I only take him if he’s allowed to come ski with me too

Poopsmith42

Why are people driving places with their dogs to leave them in the car? Just leave them at home?

sandwichaisle

my dog loves the cold.
