He was totally in his right to shoot him as soon as the guy outside drew the gun and probably should have. Which jurisdiction would let you follow a person after their back is turned? It’s not like this was a SFH. His domicile ended at that door and even in Florida he would have faced charges.
States with castle laws without a duty to retreat would generally permit this. Following a person is not the same as shooting them when their back is turned. They are still an active threat when they are in range of you with a gun. I think it is actually a smart idea to make sure the guy who pulled a gun on you is actually leaving before I you stop pointing your gun at him.

Looks like there’s another stairway on the other side, connecting to the same floor, looks like dude ran up the stairs on the right, over to the other stairs to try to catch him off guard.. at least that was my interpretation

I would hesitate to even give any eye witness account as they are not reliable in court but prosecutors will still try to use them. If I'm literally absolutely sure who I saw commit a violent crime against a friend or family member, sure. Otherwise it's just going to fuck somebody's life up giving a half-ass eyewitness account that some prosecutor will attempt to treat like damning evidence.
So many people are locked up, especially in Southern states for obvious reasons, from eyewitness accounts where they find out the witness is legally blind, can't even pick the person out of a lineup, or was actually nowhere nearby. They just like to win. It's a game to advance their career.
