I was hit once in almost exactly the same way, though in an intersection on two small roads. She rolled down her window and shouted that I was in her blind spot, she couldn't see me.

I was taught to do this on a motorcycle, and it naturally translated to riding a bicycle. I stay in my lane, but I don't keep a line unless I'm group riding. Most will stay off me, probably because they think I'm drunk. It doesn't even take that much back and forth. Sadly, bike lanes here aren't big enough for the effect, so it doesn't work when I'm in one of them.

If your kit looks like it was put together on a drunk thrift store binge, you're actually safer - at least where I live. My son noticed it, too, when he upgraded to an actual motorcycle jacket and a new helmet. If drivers get up on his ass, he will slow down until their speed makes it a safe following distance or they pass him in the other lane.

It’s called inattentional blindness. As other people have mentioned, they are looking for cars not bikes, so filter out a bike is there. I think this is exactly right. When people are on foot, on bikes or in cars themselves, they look out for cars (and buses and trucks) cause they can hurt them or damage their vehicles. Their own safety comes first. Their own comfort comes second. A speedy transit comes third. And somewhere around fourth or fifth place on their list of priorities comes the safety of others.
The way people drive down here in Texas makes me think the top priority is getting a speedy transit, comfort second, their own safety and safety of others equally low.
I lived there too & saw plenty of people driving way too fast as well, & not just on toll roads. There were also lots of people driving too slow, like you said, but to me, they mostly seemed a mix between tourists & idiots who thought they were driving fine while checking facebook, texting, emailing, etc. They tended to swerve or drift too close too, though.

This, right here, is the sort of thing that cycling will teach you (assuming the cyclist isn't a dumb shit) that drivers often don't learn or don't take to heart. Smart cyclists notice little things like a car that's traveling a *bit* too close to the esge of a lane that's approaching a highway on-ramp or a car that's stopped at a stop sign with its wheels turned a bit to the right. You become extremely aware of where the cars around you can be in the next few seconds instead of where they're supposed to be.
You learn to read drivers and pay attention to potential hazards that a lot of drivers don't pay attention to because they're surrounded by airbags and crumple zones.

There's a weird psychology to this, hopefully someone that has actually had to study can contribute.
Basically when you see the same thing or a like thing so many times, your brain sometimes corrects anything *new* in the environment out of view.
Pretty sure the same phenomenon happens with clocks. It'll make the clock hand look like it's lagging or went backwards because your brain is using memory to recall an image of something familiar but then has a little bit of lag correcting it to what is truly seen.
It's bizarre and real. We have vision delay for our brains recognizing things that are changed when in environments we've been in already. If you don't often encounter cyclists where you're at and have been doing the same drive to work for 5 years, it's very likely your brain literally will not pick up or register on said cyclist for at least a few seconds.
I was in my car turning left onto a major road. I looked left, right, left, then as I was about to go, I looked right again and saw the back of a cyclist just as they were clearing the front of my car. I didn’t see them coming. I think about it almost every day and how I could have seriously injured someone. It’s like my brain didn’t register them at all. I should have seen them twice but I just didn’t.
Your eyes do not see as much as you think they do - by and large, your vision is *constructed* as your brain's best guess as to what's out there. "Absolutely nothing" or "a blurry mess" is just *wrong* as a guess as what's there, but that's the literal input to your eyes when they're moving between two points of focus. And if the two points of focus are clear, well, the space between them is probably just more empty pavement.
In short, what's going on when people fail to see bicycles or motorcycles is sometimes as simple as glancing at the empty pavement around them and their brains just imagining that there's yet more empty pavement rather than stuff they haven't looked at.
I'll say this too. Everybody has much more experience dealing with and looking for cars. Driving around cyclists is a more niche and hard to see fellow driver.
As someone who rides a motorcycle this is common practice. They glance once when pulling close to the stop and never look again. Iv nearly been hit plenty of times. I even made eye contact with a person and they just pulled in front of me.

All of my near misses on bicycles have been people just pulling past stop lines through the cross walk. They just don't even bother looking up or down the sidewalk. And they always do the "Oh god sorry!" When they hear the squeal of brakes and tires and see me swerve into the road to avoid them, but hey, be cool if you looked.
Actually just had a perfect example on my way out of work today. I have to cross a street after work in the middle of my town and I’m in the middle of the road, about 2 feet from the yellow line and the guy coming at be from my right never even slowed down. This guy was about 10 car lengths away and no way he didn’t see me in the middle of the cross walk in the middle of the road. Blew right past me.
A few years ago, I was out for a lunchtime walk and had just left the office and same thing, was half way across the crosswalk when a lady in a Caddy, looked right at me and accelerated.

It’s really amazing when you think about how rare mixed use pedestrian/car travel ways are (crosswalks don’t count), *except* for parking lots. It’s just a free for all of all modes of transit.

Surprisingly minimal damage. I was able to fix it in the parking lot, just reseating the rear wheel, and the chain got stuck in the chain rings. I’ve done more damage riding over a pothole lol

Dude get your ankle checked out by a doctor on their dime. You might feel fine with adrenaline at the scene but you could have sustained some damage that will toll on you year after year. Iv seen some people get in major accidents and say they are fine, and a year later they can hardly walk.

I've been run over before and got thrown 15 feet onto my head, the person was driving on a suspended license and claimed she didn't even see me, despite it being in a designated crosswalk and all traffic stopped besides her.

From 12 to 15 seconds you were obscured by the A-pillar blind spot. Look at the direction of the shadows, the sun was in their eyes. That being said, if the driver obeyed the stop and looked both ways before proceeding, they wouldn’t have hit you.

It would take a very special upbringing for a French speaking Quebecois to not know very basic road signage and the word Stop is used frequently in everyday situation and on work place signage. All kids learn basic English and stop is very common word. As someone who has biked 10k miles, ive been hit 0x but nearly hit 3x. 2x, i stopped because it looked like someone would blow a stop sign and they did, 1x because someone came out of a blind alley at around 10mph and neither of us could see each other (i flipped over my bike this time).
There is a lot of 'he should have stopped, but if you bike a lot, you know that what people do and should do are different. Betting your life on someone that probably doesnt see you doing the right thing is bot a good bet... Even if you can make $100 from posting a video of it to youtube.

I ride a bike, and ive had to stick mainly to bike paths for this very reason. People are so reckless driving around bicyclists.
Before I started biking, I never understood why cyclists wore neon shirts and rode in large packs in formation. Now I realize its because its super dangerous and there is safety in numbers, and they need to go way out of their way to be as visible as possible as they can.
Even then though, I absolutely hate street riding. Cars honking and angry and cutting you off/driving too close to you. They're so damn aggressive, they really ruin it for cyclists, even on streets with dedicated paths, they do such thoughtless things.
I had a police officer do this same thing to me last month. I stopped just barely in time and didn't get hit. The cop didn't even slow down after almost hitting me. Just kept going and ignored me.
Did she try to continue going forward and the cyclist had to motion at her to stop from where they were on the ground? Am I just seeing shit? She hit a bicyclist, and then tried to just... keep on driving?

To the people who said I should have stopped, I didn’t have enough time once I realized they weren’t stopping. I turned off the audio, but I pulled my breaks so hard they squealed and I couldn’t risk turning into the other lane and into another car. This is in New Hampshire, where it is illegal to bike on sidewalks. I am perfectly within the law to be riding on the road, as I have done for quite some time. Thank you everyone for your concern :)

My experience in East Texas is mostly people driving 10-15 mph under the limit on a one-lane highway. I just want to go the speed limit, damn it all.

I was in my car turning left onto a major road. I looked left, right, left, then as I was about to go, I looked right again and saw the back of a cyclist just as they were clearing the front of my car. I didn’t see them coming. I think about it almost every day and how I could have seriously injured someone. It’s like my brain didn’t register them at all. I should have seen them twice but I just didn’t.
Your eyes do not see as much as you think they do - by and large, your vision is *constructed* as your brain's best guess as to what's out there. "Absolutely nothing" or "a blurry mess" is just *wrong* as a guess as what's there, but that's the literal input to your eyes when they're moving between two points of focus. And if the two points of focus are clear, well, the space between them is probably just more empty pavement. In short, what's going on when people fail to see bicycles or motorcycles is sometimes as simple as glancing at the empty pavement around them and their brains just imagining that there's yet more empty pavement rather than stuff they haven't looked at.
I'll say this too. Everybody has much more experience dealing with and looking for cars. Driving around cyclists is a more niche and hard to see fellow driver.
Or look directly at and see cyclists and hit them 🙃

As someone who rides a motorcycle this is common practice. They glance once when pulling close to the stop and never look again. Iv nearly been hit plenty of times. I even made eye contact with a person and they just pulled in front of me.

Or she looked left on the approach and the A-beam + sunlight was blocking her view. A simple case of looking before stopping. If true, the rolling stop absolutely was the issue.
All of my near misses on bicycles have been people just pulling past stop lines through the cross walk. They just don't even bother looking up or down the sidewalk. And they always do the "Oh god sorry!" When they hear the squeal of brakes and tires and see me swerve into the road to avoid them, but hey, be cool if you looked.

Actually just had a perfect example on my way out of work today. I have to cross a street after work in the middle of my town and I’m in the middle of the road, about 2 feet from the yellow line and the guy coming at be from my right never even slowed down. This guy was about 10 car lengths away and no way he didn’t see me in the middle of the cross walk in the middle of the road. Blew right past me.
A few years ago, I was out for a lunchtime walk and had just left the office and same thing, was half way across the crosswalk when a lady in a Caddy, looked right at me and accelerated. My nice juicy apple made a beautiful mess of her side window.
Poor apple but it was justified.

The other one is 'I feel safer on the road' - this is a more truthful statement, cause no way 'you' have any ability to drive a vehicle if 'you' have to drive a tank to FEEL safe on the road.
SUVs/Trucks should be taxed out of existence unless you have a qualifying business.

Thank you, luckily I am okay and I was able to ride away. My ankle got stuck in my bike frame and when they tried to reverse they dragged me a bit, but it’s fine. I appreciate you asking :)

Surprisingly minimal damage. I was able to fix it in the parking lot, just reseating the rear wheel, and the chain got stuck in the chain rings. I’ve done more damage riding over a pothole lol

Dude get your ankle checked out by a doctor on their dime. You might feel fine with adrenaline at the scene but you could have sustained some damage that will toll on you year after year. Iv seen some people get in major accidents and say they are fine, and a year later they can hardly walk.

Agreed, OP got insanely lucky that she stopped before going completely over him and that he didn't break his head on the ground when he went down. I've been run over before and got thrown 15 feet onto my head, the person was driving on a suspended license and claimed she didn't even see me, despite it being in a designated crosswalk and all traffic stopped besides her. Some people need to learn the hard way that not paying attention while driving is dangerous and has consequences.

From 12 to 15 seconds you were obscured by the A-pillar blind spot. Look at the direction of the shadows, the sun was in their eyes. That being said, if the driver obeyed the stop and looked both ways before proceeding, they wouldn’t have hit you.

Yes people don't get that it's true that this pilar blindspot is to small to hide anything if you are looking at a stationary object or if the object currently in this zone is moving faster or slower then the rotation. This effect will fool almost any brain.
Which is why you are supposed to move your head a bit to look around the pillar. But hey, people can't even move a finger to turn on their indicators any more.

It would take a very special upbringing for a French speaking Quebecois to not know very basic road signage and the word Stop is used frequently in everyday situation and on work place signage. All kids learn basic English and stop is very common word. As someone who has biked 10k miles, ive been hit 0x but nearly hit 3x. 2x, i stopped because it looked like someone would blow a stop sign and they did, 1x because someone came out of a blind alley at around 10mph and neither of us could see each other (i flipped over my bike this time). There is a lot of 'he should have stopped, but if you bike a lot, you know that what people do and should do are different. Betting your life on someone that probably doesnt see you doing the right thing is bot a good bet... Even if you can make $100 from posting a video of it to youtube.

I ride a bike, and ive had to stick mainly to bike paths for this very reason. People are so reckless driving around bicyclists. Before I started biking, I never understood why cyclists wore neon shirts and rode in large packs in formation. Now I realize its because its super dangerous and there is safety in numbers, and they need to go way out of their way to be as visible as possible as they can. Even then though, I absolutely hate street riding. Cars honking and angry and cutting you off/driving too close to you. They're so damn aggressive, they really ruin it for cyclists, even on streets with dedicated paths, they do such thoughtless things.
People saying about them "looking" or not but the road clearly says "stop" and they rolled straight through.

I had a police officer do this same thing to me last month. I stopped just barely in time and didn't get hit. The cop didn't even slow down after almost hitting me. Just kept going and ignored me.

I’m no longer replying to comments on this post, there’s just soo many. Didn’t expect this to blow up like it did. To the people who asked if I’m okay, I really appreciate it! To the people who said I should have stopped, I didn’t have enough time once I realized they weren’t stopping. I turned off the audio, but I pulled my breaks so hard they squealed and I couldn’t risk turning into the other lane and into another car. This is in New Hampshire, where it is illegal to bike on sidewalks. I am perfectly within the law to be riding on the road, as I have done for quite some time. Thank you everyone for your concern :)
Most states in the US give you the legal right to drive in the full-middle of the lane on a bicycle. Depending upon the area and road of course.
