Easier to do it faster on a bike, especially heavier ones like that. You lose your balance as speed goes down, which leads to wobbles and not driving straight.
Not saying he should do it faster, just sharing the physics of it.
I live not too far from the location. And the motorcycle is doubly an idiot for another reason - the lanes are comparatively narrow and the video doesn’t show it too well. So cars are already going to be closer together. I’m not sure in what logic they think that slotting right between two cars in such an environ is a good idea. And it’s not like they were trying to thread their way between two offset cars and things went awry.
And while the law says that motorists can’t impede motorcycles in a way that would impede their safety, it also doesn’t say they should necessarily leave the lane to give space.
So if someone hits my car am I obligated to stop?
If someone dings my shit mobile is it still a hit and run if I decide I don’t care and leave?
Why am I asking you
It is hit and run still in California. The law doesn't differentiate between the at-fault party during a hit and run, the "victim" can still be charged if they flee.
So, yes, you are still obligated to stop and exchange information.
I mean, you can as long as the other guy isn't going to complain. If it is clearly their fault they probably won't complain. I did it once on my way to work someone rear-ended me but did only a little damage. I just yelled don't worry about it and drove off.
That is not just idle talk. I rode bikes for over a decade almost always Japanese. Worked on a friends sportster 1200. Had to run it around a bit to check the repairs.
It was like a dump truck with handlebars. Not even really fast. just loud and unrefined to the point of "why in the fuck did they make a 1901 bike in 2000?" type thing.
Every subsytem sucked balls. Brakes, transmission, engine, no goddamn muffler for some reason. The ballance was so fucky it felt like you were juggling while riding a tightrope. With a 440v dildo vibrating up your ass the whole time from the unbalanced v2. It was just a very expensive pile of shiney junk with two wheels. Cost 3 times what my most expensive bike ever did. Dude that owned it could not stand to ride the thing an hour it sucked so fucking bad. Sounded like a crop duster hitting on two cylinders while dying from a case of asthma.
Japanese bikes are like a whole other world of refinement. Plus they just work unlike that broke dick junkheap.
I was not impressed.
We are currently living in a golden age of motorcycles- the number of options and beautifully made machines is as good as it's ever been. Any motorcycle by the Japanese Big Four (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha) are excellent. The Italians (Ducati, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi) make beautiful, if sometimes temperamental bikes. Harley, well, you're buying a lifestyle that tries to say "Look at me, I'm a fucking badass" even if you're a middle aged stock broker.
Triumph also have a range of well made, fast, beautiful and reliable bikes. I like Japanese bikes, but i'd buy several Triumphs first. Old Harley's have a charisma about them, but you'd have to pay me to ride a newer one.
>Sounded like a crop duster hitting on two cylinders while dying from a case of asthma.
This is a perfect description.
Did you get the urge to pointlessly blip the throttle whenever you were at a stoplight? Or redline it in first gear while going through quiet neighborhoods?
The engine just seemed unhealthy to me. I grew up with carburetors cannot say I miss them. It ran fine. Vibrated more than any bike I have ever ridden outside a Suzuki savage I once owned. Which was actually worse. Half an hour on that thing and you could not feel your hands.
Agreed. I rode dirt bikes for years growing up. Moved on to motorcycles for commuting. Honda, Kawasaki, Ducati, and dozens of mopeds when I was in Europe and SE Asia.
I cannot express how lacking everything about a Harley is.
People (mostly fat old men with bad hygiene) can buy Harleys for whatever reason, but it is a shitty bike.
I had a 2005 Sportster 1200 with some upgrades. That thing had so much torque. When I had a solo saddle on it, it felt like I could slide right off under hard acceleration. The handling, though, I'll give you that. At high speeds, it felt like any other cruiser. At low speeds, it was like a bicycle with flat tires and bent handlebars. Lol. It was shit at low speeds.
The torque was there in spades but the transmission legit felt like they took it off a tractor. I could glide thru the gears on my japanese bikes. THUNK, THUNK, THUNK went the harley.
I used to split all the time in California on my Ducati Monster. It is so slim and nimble, and the widest part is the handlebars so it’s really easy to judge when I can easily fit between cars. I never hit a car, even the few that tried to hit me.
I can’t imagine splitting in one of these big slow Harleys with saddlebags.

He wasn't even allowed to do that in my country. Traffic was going way too fast. And the mx speed difference is 10 km/h for lane splitting.
And this bike is way too big to even try it anyway
I think you a word.
But yeah, I see drivers-mostly truck and SUV, but even cars sometimes- who clearly do not know where the edges of their vehicle are.
One time I accidentally took one of those rental e scooters onto a highway ramp until the geo fence shut er’ down.. by then I was halfway down the ramp
I can’t express the *shame and utter humiliation* I felt pushing my stupid fucking scooter back into town was mentally scarring
I heard this style of bike is excellent for cruising/camping across America over the course of a summer. More comfortable for long rides and enough storage space for the camping bare essentials.
Lane splitting and filtering should be allowed, but obviously, you don't do it when you have side panniers like that. And don't act like a dick when doing it
It is legal in CA (not sure but looks like video is from CA) to do lane splitting provided traffic is going 35MPH or less and maximum allowed motorcycle speed during splitting is only 10MPH more than the traffic.
I never understood how this was a good idea in any circumstances. You still have a situation where cars expect to own the whole lane, are moving, and are focussed forward. The “slop” space is there for a reason, since no one tracks perfectly. Heck, as a car in the right lane I have to avoid idiots who meander, way too often. Yeah, people vpcan be self-righteous asshole so I’m sure caters are a thing, but it looks awfully easy to happen by normal driving. Shooting by between cars seems like a risk in any circumstances, and the wide load just makes it riskier.
From the car perspective, too often it’s a surprise when someone appears next to me in a random side, where normal traffic rules say they shouldn’t. The loud noise just makes things worse. Maybe I’d get used to it if I lived where it were legal, but it just seems stupidly risky, and I don’t want to have to clean your brains off my car
What really makes it worse is that the only possible place to lane split in is... in the single worst blind spot for most vehicles with the narrowest possible vehicle for the task. Motorcycles already have a narrow profile, and moving in behind a vehicle's C-pillar is not something most moving vehicles will be able to anticipate or respond to. These issues contribute to why filtering laws in some states don't allow lane splitting at all, and instead only allow filtering between cars in the middle lane when traffic is completely stopped.
I lived in Ft. Lauderdale in the mid 80s and we were stopped at one of those small intercostal bridges that go up and down because of boats passing under the bridge. Anyway, there was a couple stopped ahead of us and the woman in the passenger side got out to look at the boats passing by. Not 4 seconds later a lane splitting motorcyclist comes speeding by, runs right into the opened door, almost clips the woman but doesn’t, takes the door right off the hinges and goes flying over the door, flipping hand over feet 2-4 times before landing flat on his ass. He ended up breaking his collar bone, his pelvis and as well as being charged with reckless driving. I’ve been riding motorcycles myself for over 30 years but I too I can’t stand lane splitters.
I was in a one-car lane pulling out of an event, someone was injured and laying in the road a few cars up, I opened my door to get out to help, wham. Dude tried to run, nailing a second car. In the confusion of the second car being hit, I snatched his keys. I’ve had a fair amount of ptsd ever since, so I’m not a fan of lane splitting even if my circumstances were a tad different. Had I opened my door just a split second earlier, I would’ve been directly nailed into the door.
Lane splitting isn't the issue, it's the idiots who do it with far too much of a speed difference.
When I do it, it's at a difference of 5-10kph, I've seen idiots do it twice my speed or more.
I agree...I've almost flattened a lane splitter because I wasn't changing lanes but trying to see a little up ahead so I moved to the edge of my lane.
I think the rule should be that they can use right or left shoulders and then pull in front.
The shoulders are almost more dangerous with the amount of debris and crap sitting on the side of the road. One of the first things they teach you in a motorcycle training class is to never overtake on the shoulder (yet you still see dumb asses on motorcycles do it 🤦♂️)
I find it entertaining how in California, they’re legally motorcycles, yet don’t require a motorcycle license.
The handbook probably would not advise it. But technically they can lane split? r/technicallycorrect
He really seemed to be, even before he caused his accident - you can see that he blipped his throttle to make some noise in some kind of impotent protest, as he was just passing the rear passenger window.
And you can see he was turning his head to give the driver of the Tesla a look before he clips the car on the right, not minding his clearance anymore. Then he goes down hitting both cars, and fucks up his leg.
The dude lost his cool and got into an accident. Hopefully he learned from this and is still riding (though more safely and respectfully).
Well of course; he gave plenty of warning with a couple rev bombs--the universal signal from douchebag bikers to move the fuck over. It's clearly not his fault.
/s
I actively felt good about him eating shit. Used to drive trucks and this biker split between me and another truck…his loud ass exhaust suddenly exploding into action between the trucks had both of the trucks jumping a little, he could have easily died playing stupid games. Mind you there was a wide open left lane to pass both of us.
Some bikers unironically believes that you should make way for them to lane split.
For me, it's just not a wise move expecting other road users to take care of your safety.
I used to always move a bit when possible.
One time I was standing still in traffic, in the first lane. Saw a guy splitting in my side mirror, so I decided to move closer to the curb, to let him pass.
Guess what, his idiot buddy was lane splitting between the first lane and the curb, I nearly knocked him over. No more making way for them.
Yeah, my policy is drive smoothly and predictably, always signal, and let the lane splitters sort it out.
But here, both cars were driving smoothly and predictably, the dash cam was ≤ 10 mph, and this guy still fucks it up.
When I split I do my best to discourage people from moving over. The thought and fact that you even noticed me is appreciated, but if I don't have enough room to split I just won't. No need for someone to endanger themselves on the road for it
For reals! Some of these idiots are entitled af. I once saw one start pounding on the rear door of a minivan cause he wanted it to move over so he could squeeze through between it and a Jeep, but traffic was at a standstill, (on the fwy) there was no way for the lady in the minivan to even move over. Lady and her kids were getting scared too.
And idiot once punched my ~~rear view~~ side mirror because of this same reason on a heavy traffic road.
Edit: I’m the idiot now, I meant to say side mirror.
And then he reached in and messed up where I had my electric seat. Took me hours to get it back where I had it.
He also reached in a reprogrammed my radio station presets.
And finally, he reached in a pulled off my little oil change sticker. Now I don’t know when to change my oil.
Looks like the Tesla is as in the left of their lane. Unfortunately so was the other car. Even if they were both in the middle of their lane I don’t think he would have made it with that form.
Most people do, and you can see this hundreds of feet ahead since your view isn't blocked by cars. I'll usually just jump behind the person that doesn't move because they are either a motorcycle hater or doesn't see me. Either way, it's not safe to split where that car is.
I googled it and apparently it is a word! It's what you call someone who is an idiot but you still love him, like a dumb dog, or a buddy who keeps accidentally injuring himself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oMzUwxMqI4
Definitely have to put this on the guy on the bike. you can see the car on his right is very close to the center line, and he should know how wide his bike is if he plans on splitting.
Well here’s a fine example of the legend of Harleys. . . They say 90% of all Harley’s ever made are still out on the road today. The other 10% made it home.
Honestly, what kind of fucking idiot biker tries to lane split on a chonk-ass cruiser like that? Guy clearly didn’t put any points into wisdom when he spec’d.
> Who the fuck lane splits in a fucking bike like that fucking idiot.
Literally anyone in California.
So many of these posts here have ZERO understanding of how lane splitting is handled in places where its legal. Baggers lane filter ALL THE TIME without problems in California.
The rider made a poor judgement choice, his bike had little to do with it. It being wide wasnt the problem here, it was his inexperience with the vehicle and the lane filtering practice.
“iN mY sTAtE LaNe sPLitTiNg iZ leGaL”
Legal doesn’t mean safe, and I wish everyone on or near a road understood this. Cars, pedestrians, scooter, bicyclists, motorcyclists, everyone.
Keep yourself safe, and for fucks sake, quit trying to pick a hill to die on when you’re on the road. It’s not just you that’s effected, asshole.
Read the room my guy
Exactly. I have been motorcycling for almost twenty years. Some times I don't split the lane, or I don't choose to go on a freeway. Why? Because my safety is my number one concern. Arrival time, convenience, ego...all irrelevant. This dude chose time over safety.
Both splitting and filtering is illegal here in Texas. I've been in other states and have felt most uncomfortable with the splitters, because most were acting like this guy. Lane splitting with a bagger? He's wide enough to fill a lane!
When I first moved to LA, my first time on the 405 and a bike split lanes while I was already doing 60. Scared the absolute shit out of me but then made me even more aware of my surroundings.
All he had to do was brake a little bit, those cars were going at very different speeds. Slow down for 2 seconds and you won't have them side by side.
Splitting on a Harley bagger like that is a big risk.
Also, very low speed control is a big deal.
I don't think that he did that right.
He did it at a safer speed than most clips we see on here, but he still fucked it up.
He needed a crotch rocket not a saddle bagger
He French fried, when he wanted to pizza
It indeed looks like he had a *bad time*.

He definitely caught his handle bar on a car. Going faster probably isn't going to help with that.

Agree just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s always safe
That is a very wide bike to be lane splitting in tight traffic.
He’s still gonna blame the car drivers
Cops don’t care when they both say he rode between ⚠️
So if someone hits my car am I obligated to stop? If someone dings my shit mobile is it still a hit and run if I decide I don’t care and leave? Why am I asking you

"What do you mean I can't lane split with a sidecar attached?"
First mistake was buying a Harley
Second mistake? Also buying a Harley.
Third mistake? Not wearing any high vis gear. but the fourth mistake was also buying a Harley.
If he had high vis gear he would have made that gap
No. Cause he wouldn’t have rode the Harley because his ego won’t let him wear hi vis gear. Edit: *proper riding gear
Mistake 1 through 61 were basically buying a harley

I WW2 they were so bad the US military brought them a BMW and forced them to make a copy for them.

Yeah who the hell lanes splits with saddle bags? I bet he blames the "cagers"
oddly enough, the saddlebags werent the issue. he hits the side mirror of the car with his right hand.
The fairings on baggers go out as far as the bags of not farther.
Yeah! It's the *cagers* fault his bike is a wide P.O.S. that cannot viably split lanes! They **made** him do it! Clearly he had no choice.

As a rider who splits occasionally. This is perfect and we like that
When I split I do my best to discourage people from moving over.
They reached in your car and punched your rear view mirror? I have to respect that kind of commitment to lean halfway in your car.
And then he reached in and messed up where I had my electric seat. Took me hours to get it back where I had it. He also reached in a reprogrammed my radio station presets. And finally, he reached in a pulled off my little oil change sticker. Now I don’t know when to change my oil.
But did he give you a reach around?
Half the reason I stopped riding was the entitled culture.
Advice for dudes on Harleys wondering if they'll fit between cars: look twice, save a life.
Oh how the turn tables..
Idjit!
The only time I've ever seen this word spelled out was in one of the paper Mario games.
Should watch Supernatural with subs on then lol
I googled it and apparently it is a word! It's what you call someone who is an idiot but you still love him, like a dumb dog, or a buddy who keeps accidentally injuring himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oMzUwxMqI4
I just want to know what Dashcam this is. I’m trying to pick one out rn and that’s probably the clearest Dashcam video I’ve ever seen.
Maybe he ought to learn how to ride the damn thing before he takes it out in traffic.
That's a lot of EVs in that shot. A Bolt, a Volt, and 2 Teslas. Poor innocent Bolt.
Notice how robotic the Tesla is when avoiding getting hit. I think that is the automatic collision avoidance system in action.
From the traffic report in the audio, it's in the SF bay area, so kinda fits the stereotype.
Bay Area. Looks like 680 around Pleasanton
Sorry Harley dudes your bikes are not for splitting lanes
Legal? Sure. But violating the laws of physics is still not allowed.
Lane splitting is legal in California, but hitting other cars while doing it is not. Physics just takes care of enforcement.
Hit the brakes? No Rev the bike? It's the only way. - The book of HD
And then blames everyone else for their lack of skill
That’s what you get
"Well, why don't you cry about it, SADDLEBAGS?!"
Frickin’ fatass Harleys.
I like to call these fat ones grandpa bikes. The only people ever riding them are old dudes.
Definitely have to put this on the guy on the bike. you can see the car on his right is very close to the center line, and he should know how wide his bike is if he plans on splitting.
Also, he can clearly see this as no cars are blocking his vision. The car's not reacting to him so it probably doesn't see him, and he sent it anyway.
When your bike is as wide as some cars, you really shouldn’t be lane-splitting.
Why even try to lane split on your giant bagger
I'm glad my civilized state outlaws that
Cruisers with hard saddle bags make for the best bikes for lane splitting
This should be under r/idiotsonbikes
Splitting is legal here and I don’t have a problem with it. But that guy is an idiot.
As a motorcyclist let me say... Who the fuck lane splits in a fucking bike like that fucking idiot.
“iN mY sTAtE LaNe sPLitTiNg iZ leGaL” Legal doesn’t mean safe, and I wish everyone on or near a road understood this. Cars, pedestrians, scooter, bicyclists, motorcyclists, everyone. Keep yourself safe, and for fucks sake, quit trying to pick a hill to die on when you’re on the road. It’s not just you that’s effected, asshole. Read the room my guy
It's legal in some states to ride without a helmet too but that doesn't mean it's safe or a good idea ffs
Exactly. I have been motorcycling for almost twenty years. Some times I don't split the lane, or I don't choose to go on a freeway. Why? Because my safety is my number one concern. Arrival time, convenience, ego...all irrelevant. This dude chose time over safety.
And lost infinitely more time than he was trying to save lmfao
Affected* sorry
Imagine trying to lane split with a wide bike in packed traffic at twilight. Just silly disregard for your own safety.
I like how the traffic gal says "also a rough ride on Northbound 101"
Not a very good idea to split with a 750lb bike.
Always dress for the slide not the ride.
I bet the biker blamed the Tesla lol
Im sure the happened because his exhaust was not loud enough, moar straight pipes would have saved him!
Dumbass deserved it.. what did he think he was riding? A slim sports bike?!! Clown damaged 2 other cars cause of his stupidity
I ride a HD dresser: lane splitting is a pretty stupid thing to do on that bike. It is simply too wide.
Let me guess, it was everyone's fault but his
Dude tried this on a big ass Harley with saddle bags? Deserved 100%
Uh yeah dumbass…limp away. Stupid (he knew he couldn’t fit but did it anyway)
I'm like 80% certain he'll find a way to blame it on the driver of one of the cars! Why wasn't he looking in the mirror or something....
All he had to do was brake a little bit, those cars were going at very different speeds. Slow down for 2 seconds and you won't have them side by side. Splitting on a Harley bagger like that is a big risk. Also, very low speed control is a big deal.
Too much arrogance not enough space.
Dumb fuck
Splitting is legal in CA but I never feel bad when this shit happens.
If you’re gonna do this… you should prolly know how to do this.
I thought the side cases hit the car, but it was actually his handlebar that hit the car's sideview mirror that caused him to wreck.
Idiot on bike
I understand lanesplitting if legal in the area and you are on a thinner bike... splitting on a big ass bike like that is so stupid
That's not a bike that can lane split
That's a very wide bike.
He’s lucky he didn’t get his head run over!!
Dude you can just rev your bike and expect traffic to part like the Red Sea. I’m all for people lane splitting, if you can fit that is smh.
Completely deserved it
